Tell Fortunes Like a Hedgehog! The Official Amy Rose Fortune Deck Gets New Pre-Order Details

Back in February, we reported that an official Amy Rose Fortune Card Deck was on the way. Pre-orders are now available at AmazonBarnes & Noble, and other Simon & Schuster distributed bookstores. The deck is currently listed at $27.99 with a November 21 release date (a bit out from the original Barnes & Noble listing of $24.99 and October 10).

The set includes 78 fully illustrated cards, including the Major and Minor Arcana (or however they’re interpreted in Sonic’s world), and a 128 page guidebook. Though on all storefronts, there’s a large “Art Not Final” label, the cards shown include “Statue Savior” (the Tidal Tempest angel statue), “The Master” (Emerald), and “Chao’s Fruit” (self explanatory). The cover also shows card designs with Silver’s glove and Knuckles’ fist. The colorful card backs feature iconography from the series like rings, gems, flowers, bumpers, and checkerboard patterns, while the face’s yellow and dark-red border emphasize whether the card is drawn right-side-up or upside-down.

With the series taking a hard (hammer) swing back towards Amy’s old Fortune Teller lore, this design for Amy’s deck has already appeared in the IDW comic series, Sonic Origins’ animated cutscenes, and possibly even in an upcoming Sonic Frontiers update. Whether you see this as a functional novelty, a series of cute art prints, or even a cosplay accessory, this is an interesting choice for one of the series’ first major adaptations of in-world object to physical merch.

Amy Rose Starring In Her Very Own 30th Anniversary One-Shot Comic

It’s really happening: Classic Amy is getting her own one-shot comic from IDW in celebration of her 30th anniversary. This will be in keeping with the Classic Sonic and Tails 30th anniversay one-shots, which have practically made these Classic Sonic comics an annual tradition.

The comic will be written by Ian Flynn, with art by Aaron Hammerstrom and Reggie Graham. The issue will release in September for $5.99. Check out the full solicit with the plot summary below:

Cool, sweet, and pink! All words that describe our absolute favorite hedgehog. That’s right, step aside, Sonic, and have no fear, because Amy Rose is here!

Ian Flynn, Aaron Hammerstrom, and Reggie Graham are back for another Classic Sonic special! And this time, Amy’s doing the saving!

After Metal Sonic interrupts her picnic, Amy uses her Fortune Cards as a guide to free her friends and stop Doctor Eggman. Can she save the day and still get back in time for tea?!

The comic has three covers, with Cover A done by Aarom Hammerstrom, Cover B being done by Mauro Fonseca, and the retail incentive cover being done by Jennifer Hernandez. Check them out below:

Sonic Origins Plus DLC Officially Out

The Sonic Origins Plus DLC has officially rolled out on all platforms as of midnight EST. Playstation, Xbox, and Switch players can all play it, and Steam users can…well, buy it, at least, for a slight mark-up.

Unfortunately, as of this writing, the Sonic Origins 2.0 patch with all the fixes and DLC content has yet to become available on Steam, meaning Steam players are locked out of the DLC even if they buy it. This will hopefully resolve soon, but anyone on Steam hoping to play the game at midnight will need to hold off.

Steam users are also currently being charged a dollar more for for the DLC, for some reason. We have reached out to SEGA for comment.

Found Sonic Origins Plus Footage Shows What Happens When Amy Has All Chaos Emeralds

(Spoiler Warning, but hopefully you know what you’re getting into if you saw the article title).

One point of the fanbase’s longstanding curiosity with Sonic Origins Plus and its addition of Amy Rose has been “Will she have a super form?” It appears we may have an answer. A video posted to YouTube channel “Sekaimen” feature all four character’s Super and Hyper transformations, including the previously unseen Amy transformations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx4mQrn8M8A (embed prevented, region blocked)

While you (like me) may be skeptical of the footage this early given the strange nature of the channel itself, we took a good look at the sprites compared to other official sources, and they do line up. Much like most other Super forms, Amy gains enhanced speed, though she does not appear to have a unique sprite to her form (much like Tails or Knuckles). Her Hyper form doesn’t seem to visually change her, nor does this video show off any additional abilities (if there are any).

SEGA has kept a tight wrap on Amy footage up until yesterday’s Sonic Official Stream, but with the DLC releasing next week, this might be our first external peek at what she can do. Those hoping Amy’s Super inclusion would buck a visual trend set across the 16-bit styled games may be left wanting, but her consistency here and her inclusion in Superstars has cemented her as an important character to the Classic Sonic series.

Classic Amy’s Modern Skin Revealed

The Sonic Superstars website has been updated with an image of classic Amy’s modern Amy skin, which will be given away to anyone who subscribes to the website’s newsletter by January 31, 2024.

It doesn’t completely change Amy’s look, only altering her clothes while leaving her classic spikes intact. Check it out below. You can subscribe to the newsletter here. You can only sign up for one platform per email, and Steam does not appear to be selectable right now.

Sonic Superstars Level Select Screen Suggests Time Attack Mode, Amy-Exclusive Act

The past few days have been filled with Sonic Superstars news, and we aren’t done yet! The video game journalist group Easy Allies was talking about the game on their Twitch stream while utilizing footage posted earlier today by IGN Japan. Towards the end of their discussion, and where the IGN Japan footage cut out, the footage they were showing instead transitioned to a level select screen.

This level select screen mostly just shows some unnamed zones and acts, but it contains two very interesting details. First, it lists a “time attack” option off to the side, meaning that this game likely has a time attack feature. What’s even more interesting than that, however, is one of the levels it lists: an act of Zone 5 meant specifically for Amy Rose.

What this appears to suggest is that this game will have acts meant for specific characters! Of course, this isn’t a confirmation, and could very well be a cut feature or something meant for DLC, but this has some curious implications nevertheless.

Check out a screenshot of the level select screen below:

Get Crafty With This Official Amy Rose Pixel Art Reference Sheet

If you ever wanted to have the chance to create something Amy Rose-y in pixel-perfect proportions, then SEGA Japan has you covered. The company released a reference sheet of the Sonic series heroine, for fans to get crafty ahead of the release of Sonic Origins Plus.

As you can see, the sprite reference features Classic Amy Rose’s new standing pose and running animation, as seen in trailers for the upcoming compilation pack. A new addition to the Sonic Origins collection, Amy Rose is an extra playable character that can be used in Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Photos courtesy SEGA Japan Official Twitter Channel.

SEGA’s official Japanese social media channels shared a link to the Downloads page where you can find the PDF reference sheet, along with the above photo to show what you can do with it. The company also appears to task fans with an Iron-on Beads art challenge over the coming Japanese ‘Golden Week’ national holiday.

You can visit the downloads page here, there are other characters available to get creative with too, from Sonic to Tails and Knuckles.

Headcannon Working on Sonic Origins Plus DLC Sprites, Enhancements

In a tweet that went up a few hours ago, Headcannon confirmed that they have contributed to the upcoming new content for Sonic Origins Plus, including Amy Rose’s new sprites and Knuckles’ campaign in Sonic CD.

Headcannon specifically calls out the work of team members Andy A-Start and DashPadSPD for design and data management in the expansion. In addition to the character updates, Headcannon also supplied additional enhancements which were not specified. Closing out the thread, the team thanks SEGA for their openness to the developer’s feedback and suggestions, and they appreciate the level of trust SEGA put in them.

Headcannon was responsible for bringing Sonic 3 & Knuckles to the Retro Engine in Sonic Origins’ initial digital release. While our staff has had very positive experiences with collection, some members of the community and members of Headcannon itself have expressed dissatisfaction with its technical shortcomings.

Sonic Origins Plus Revealed: Playable Amy, Emulated Game Gear Games, New Box Art Shown

Well that didn’t take long.

Sonic Origins Plus, which has been the subject of two increasingly revealing leaks, has finally been officially announced. This new, expanded version of Sonic Origins will include playable Amy, add Knuckles to Sonic CD, add emulated versions of Sonic’s 12 Game Gear titles to the museum, and will also include all previously released Digital Deluxe content. It’ll release on June 23, in time for Sonic’s 32nd anniversary, and Sonic Origin’s own 1 year anniversary.

Sonic Origins Plus will release both physically and digitally for $39.99, with the physical edition including reversible box art and a 20 page art book. Current Sonic Origins owners can have all the new DLC for $9.99.

This announcement came via a trailer, which you can watch below:

Here’s a quick look at the physical packing, reversible box art and artbook from the trailer:

RUMOR: Sonic Origins Plus Coming in June, Will Include Game Gear Games & Playable Amy

So, Sonic Origins Plus’s announcement is probably coming pretty soon. A rating for the game released last month, and now ComicBook.com appears to have accidentally posted an article announcing the game early. Said article has now been deleted, but remnants of it can still be found via the site’s search engine and through Google caching. The article confirmed the following:

 • Sonic Origins Plus will release digitally and physically for $39.99 on June 23, owners of the original game can get the DLC for $9.99
 • All 12 Sonic Game Gear games will be include and playable via the museum.
 • Amy Rose will be playable across all the 16-bit games.
 • Knuckles will be playable in Sonic CD
 • All Digital Deluxe content will be included
 • Physical Editions will include 20-page artbook & new reversible cover art.

CB isn’t always the most reliable site, especially when it comes to rumors, but what makes this notable is the nature of the article. That it was posted as matter-of-fact news, that it was deleted, all make this notable…as a rumor. Since this isn’t coming directly from SEGA, and we have no way of confirming this ourselves, we’ve labeled it as a rumor, will be reporting it as such, and we encourage our readers to treat it that way.

An announcement is probably imminent…or maybe this was written up to fo up in a week, or a month. We’ll know soon enough!

TSS Comic Review: Sonic The Hedgehog #58

Story by Ian Flynn

Art by Thomas Rothlisberger

SYNOPSIS

With Sonic #57, the Urban Warfare went underway. Sonic returned to Eggperial city where he recently defeated Surge and brought along Tangle, Whisper, and the new team leader, Lanolin. Tangle decided to name the team “Diamond Cutters” to honor Whisper’s old team which the wolf is NOT happy with. The group soon finds out that Eggman’s city is growing rapidly on its own by using up all the resources below the ground. The issue ends with Sonic barely escaping a portal that sucks up the rest of the team. He realizes that this adventure is too much even for him.

In Sonic #58, backup has arrived!  Tails, Amy, Blaze, and Silver quickly show up to help Sonic look for his missing teammates while the rest of the Diamond Cutters are trapped in what appears to be another dimension, but in the same location. They can see and hear Sonic and their friends, but they can’t interact with them or the environment. During this time, we get some emotional moments with Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin. Meanwhile, we get some fun action moments with Sonic and his crew.

REVIEW

Sonic #58 is one of my favorite issues in months! We get some emotional moments followed up with great action. Let’s start off with Lanolin. My biggest issue is her being made a team leader while being brand new. In issue #57, she gave off this over-serious, “Sally Acorn” vibe without really earning it. Here, we get her backstory and she admits that she’s new and inexperienced. While I still don’t like the idea of a brand new character who just stepped out of the background given a leadership position, showing her flaws does help me like her character more.

Meanwhile Whisper finally confronts Tangle about the “Diamond Cutter” team name. The team she lost. Tangle thought it would be a good way to honor Whisper’s former teammates. She knew how close they were to Whisper and hoped the same for herself so they wouldn’t drift apart again. She apologizes to Whisper with the most adorable and comical sobbing I’ve ever seen. Wrapping her tail around her face to hide her tears as she breaks down crying. Whisper thinks back to how others have been doing nothing but helping her as of late (both physically and emotionally) while she’s been keeping her distance. She realizes that constantly keeping her friends away isn’t helping anyone. It looks like Whisper is no longer acting as a lone wolf. It’s a huge moment for her character.

With that emotional moment out of the way, we get some fun action with Sonic and his friends. In the midst of taking down an Egg Hammer bot, Amy, with some telekinesis assistance (try saying that three times fast) from Silver, smash the robot with its own massive hammer. It’s one of the best Amy Rose moments I’ve seen in quite some time. Silver is absolutely floored as he confesses Amy did most of the heavy lifting. Even Sonic tells her she’s awesome. We also get some continuity with the previous annual as Blaze mentions she’s still on vacation and Silver is glad to be useful (although you’d think they’d get more use from a guy who has telekinesis and can fly). Both teams decide to head to the central control hub, just before a huge explosion happens and we are introduced to our third group, Team Dark. Looks like we’ll be seeing some antihero shenanigans in the next issue.

This issue had everything. Action, humor, and a lot of heart. This is the best work I’ve seen out of Ian Flynn in a while, giving us a more text-heavy issue than we’ve had in ages. It felt twice as long to read as most issues and I mean that in the best way. The art by Thomas Rothlisberger is both cartoony and expressive. Allowing the more emotional moments to go through while still having a great pace for humor and action. Tangle’s tearful apology was both sweet and hilarious. I’ve never seen a character sobbing drawn in such a humorous manner.

My main critiques of the issue are the same as the last one. We still don’t get a good showing of the city expanding. It would be nice to get some distance shots to help show its progression. Even some walls suddenly springing up around Sonic and his friends would help show off the environment better. Also, if the city is hollowed out from the earth below it, how is it not falling in on itself since it should be a massive sinkhole? Everything needs a foundation. But those are minor nitpicks of an otherwise solid arc so far. Can’t wait for the next two issues!

First Images of Wave 10 of Jakks Pacific 4” Toys Released, including Vector & Ray

The next wave of Jakks Pacific’s 4” figures come out next month, and we’ve finally got some images!

This wave has some of Sonic’s less popular friends. Amongst the modern characters, we’ve got Amy Rose and Vector the Crocodile, and for the classic characters we have yet another Classic Sonic, and…Ray the Flying Squirrel!

Merch for both Vector and Ray tend to be quite rare. I’m fairly certain this is the first time Ray has ever gotten an action figure, while this is only Vector’s second action figure ever.

More Sonic X-Treme Material Released by Lead Artist

In August, we reported the discovery of several models in the portfolio of Sonic X-Treme lead designer Ross Harris, including the previously unknown inclusion of Amy Rose.

Harris has now released some videos on his own channel showing off several of the assets that were seen in the portfolio in action, as well as other concept videos done in Sonic X-Treme’s development. Aside from showing off Sonic animations and Amy run cycles, there’s an early Tails model, several Badniks, logo animations and mock-ups showing off how platforms and pipes would work.

Most notably, Harris himself confirmed that a lot of this work is from the early stages of Sonic X-Treme as opposed to later on (which is when the development trouble really affected a lot of these ideas). It’s really interesting to see what the game might have looked like before the more famous period of the game’s history.

Knuckles, Amy Rose and the Chaotix Confirmed for Sonic Forces

A lot of different news on Sonic Forces has been dropping these past 24 hours, and now word from Game Informer is that Knuckles, Amy Rose and the Chaotix can be heard communicating to Sonic on the chaos going on near them via radio. This likely puts them as NPC characters rather than playable, but they are in the game in some form. Still, “Forces” usually implies armies of some sort, so it’s possible the game has characters set in groups, but that’s just a theory.

ScrewAttack Pits Amy Rose vs Ramona Flowers in the Latest Death Battle

What do Goku and Superman, Mario and Sonic, and Link and Cloud all have in common? They’re all subjects of similar calibre and prestige with comparable histories and skill sets, prompting never-ending debates online arguing over who would win over the other in a fight. That is where ScrewAttack comes in with their Death Battle series to put these debates to rest, analyzing two contenders’ weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win in these titular fights.

This isn’t the first time Death Battle hosts Wiz and Boomstick brought in a Sonic character, as Sonic, Tails, and Shadow among others have appeared in previous episodes. Today’s instalment, however, pits Amy Rose and her Piko Piko Hammer against the hammer-wielding valkyrie of Scott Pilgrim’s dreams, Ramona Flowers. Place your bets, because IT’S TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLEEEEEEE… below!

Sonic List: The Top Official/Semi-Official Sonic Pairings (Valentine’s Special)

SX16

I hate you Google Image. I put two Sonic characters in your search bar and you provide me with these horrifying images of Sonic couples. The safe search, it does nothing! Why are they inflated?! Why are they centaurs?! Why are those things a fetish?! GAAAAAH!

Anyway, it’s Valentine’s day, love (or some other foul stench) is in the air and it’s the perfect time to talk about everyone’s favorite Sonic relationships. While I’m sure there are many of you who like to ship their own fictional Sonic couples be it straight, gay or “call the police”, I wanted to focus on the ones that have been made official or even semi-official through the games, comics or cartoons be they full blown couples or just one-sided love interests. I’m not much of a shipper myself, but I wanted to look at them from a writer’s perspective to see what works about them. So in no particular order, here’s my list of what I personally think are the best couples in the Sonic Universe.

Sonic Lost World TGS Trailer Includes Amy, New Cutscenes

A brand new TGS 2013 trailer for Sonic Lost World has been released on the game’s Japanese website, and it features a whole cavalcade of new things to see. There’s what appears to be a gorgeous CG intro scene of Sonic and Tails chasing something in the Tornado on their way to Lost Hex, as well as our first (brief!) glimpse of Amy in an in-game cutscene. We also see interactions between the Deadly Six, and Eggman preparing to fire some sort of gun. For people hoping for a deeper and slightly darker story compared to Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations… it looks like you may be in luck!

There’s also plenty of new gameplay footage to see too, including a good look at all of the levels revealed so far – especially recently-revealed ones like Tropical Coast – and a more detailed demonstration of how the Wisps will work in both the Wii U and 3DS versions, showing how the GamePad in particular will bring new ways to control Sonic’s alien-powered abilities.

The Japanese site for Sonic Lost World also includes a few new pieces of art, included below. Thanks to SSMB member Woun for finding all of these new goodies!

With so much new stuff to see, that means there’s lots to discuss! Let us know what you think of the TGS trailer in the comments!

Valentine’s Day Special: Sonic’s Worst Girlfriends

Penders and Flynn (and Bollers and Sega) could write a bad romance.

In Sonic’s long history of cartoons, comics and games, he’s had quite a few ladies. Hell, in the comics he’s had enough women to make Captain Kirk envious. However, many of these relationships did not work out so well or were just a horrible HORRIBLE idea in the first place. Sometimes, love stinks. Read on to find out who made the list.  Also, when you have to us Google image search to find images of Sonic’s old GF’s for an article, PLEASE USE SAFE SEARCH!! I learned the hard way.

Knuckles & Amy Confirmed For Sonic Colours DS

In an interview with Video Games Daily, Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka has confirmed rumours dating back to E3 in June, which claimed Knuckles the Echidna and Amy Rose will be appearing in the DS version of Sonic Colours. Iizuka reveals that both characters will feature in the game’s story mode, but like Tails, they will not be playable.

The DS version introduces the other characters like Knuckles and Amy as kind of the guest characters. They don’t have any direct influence on the gameplay but they act as the narrative to the background of the story, so if you play the DS version you get a better understanding of the story for Sonic Colours.

Iizuka also gives us some insight into how Sonic Team implements fan feedback from previous Sonic games into upcoming titles:

The team always looks at feedback immediately after we release a game and they are always looking to the pros and cons of the feedback and try to address those through the next game developed. They don’t really take it fully because they have their own thoughts but they do look at feedback and try to input as much as possible.

That feedback is actually the story of how Sonic Colours came to be. The players had always wanted a pure Sonic action game. They always wanted to play as Sonic and they always wanted the high-speed action stages. That is how we started the project for Sonic Colours — that was the most important feedback to look into. With Sonic Colours we wanted the stage to start with high-speed Sonic action and end with high-speed Sonic action. We didn’t want to break it up by introducing other characters or other kinds of action so the feedback has really influenced this game.

New characters for Sega Superstars Tennis

Amy and Dr. Eggman’s “Shadow the Hedgehog” art is being used for their character icons, how lazy.

The mag reveals Ulala changes costume from her orange suit to a white suit and Sonic changes to Super Sonic during a match which makes both characters turn the ball sparkly. Sega had no comments on this right now. Continue reading New characters for Sega Superstars Tennis

Amy Rose Will Appear in Sonic Adventure 2

Finally, that burning question has been well and truly answered. In an interview with IGN Insider, Sonic Adventure 2 director Takashi Iizuka confirmed that Sonic’s pink admirer, Amy Rose, will indeed play a part in the game’s story. But unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint) she will not be playable. It’d be interesting to see how she makes an impact on the plot when the game’s released.
