New Images of Sonic Frontiers Surface from Japanese Nintendo Direct

In the September 13th, 2022 Nintendo Direct, Sonic Frontiers (seemingly the Switch version) made an 8-second appearance… but only in the Japanese version for some reason. I’ve taken the liberty of cropping and uploading the clip by itself onto YouTube for your easy viewing pleasure above.

Also, it was never shared here, but Nintendo actually uploaded some screenshots of the Switch version on their various eShop pages earlier (such as on the NA page). I’ve placed them below:

We also have a comparison between the Switch version (on the left) and the higher-end version (on the right):

How are you finding the Switch version to be turning out so far? Let us know if the comments below.

AoSTH Coming to Blu-ray Courtesy of Discotek in Feb 2022

Looks like Sonic’s most looney cartoon, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, is finally coming to Blu-ray! Discotek a couple of years back also brought Sonic X to blu-ray as well. Like Sonic X before it, AoSTH will also indeed in standard definition.

Sonic Frontiers trademarked by Sega

Well well, looks like we’re ever closer to the official reveal of the new Sonic game Sega teased earlier this year if this trademark is anything to go by.

Indeed, Sega has trademarked Sonic Frontiers both in English and Japanese back on October 22nd (you’re getting slow, fandom!), and this has happened a few times before. In the past, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World for example had their trademarks registered and “leaked” not long before each were announced back in the day.

Long-Lost High Quality ‘Sonic and the Secret Rings’ Gameplay Videos From 2006 Re-Discovered

E3 2006 was a crazy-exciting time for Sonic for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest was the blue blur’s first run on Nintendo’s Wii console. Sonic and the Secret Rings was an interesting new style of platformer, and so there was a lot of interest in its reveal. Now, we’ve managed to find some long-lost videos of the game’s first-ever gameplay from E3 2006 – check them out!

Remember the Zeebo? A small console produced by longtime SEGA partner Tectoy released for the Brasilian market over a decade ago, the smartphone-in-a-box was originally planned to have a number of Dreamcast ports launch with the device, including Sonic Adventure. But the blue blur never ended up appearing on the console, and recently we found out why.

GameFly also lists a ‘Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz – HD Double Pack’ for Switch (Update)

Update @ 9:33PM EST 08/26/2020: Canadian retailer Video Games Plus has also put up the listing, alongside a HQ box which you can see above. They also put up a listing for the Sonic Mania + Team Sonic Racing Double Pack as well, now with similar bilingual packaging.

###

The double packs just doubled up! Following the earlier finding of a Sonic Mania + Team Sonic Racing Double Pack for Switch, this time retailer GameFly has put up the same listing, but also added a Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz – HD Double Pack for Switch as well. Sadly there is no accompanying box art this time, but the other pack’s box art will give you an idea of what to expect.

While the Sonic Mania + Team Sonic Racing pack is dated for October 26th, 2020 on Amazon for $39.99 USD, there’s no firm date yet for the Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD pack. However GameFly lists both for a placeholder October 31st, 2020 date. Perhaps both will release on the same day, possibly also for $39.99 USD?

Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration coming to Ninjala for Switch

If you’ve been following things, you may remember that this was leaked via a datamining of the game Ninjala for Nintendo Switch (these things tend to happen) where references to the Sonic franchise were found. Anyway, Ninjala makers GungHo finally revealed the existence of the collaboration with our fav blue Hedgehog. Only, that’s all for now! We’ll have to wait and see what the collaboration will actually be about. When that time comes, we’ll let you know!

Ninjala for those who don’t know is a free-to-play competitive action game that’s out right now worldwide exclusively on Nintendo Switch (from the director of Dissidia Final Fantasy on PSP, I am not kidding). So if you have a Switch, you can try it out now (find your regional store page on the official site) and see if it’s your thing, and it’ll hopefully give you an idea on what to expect from this collaboration.

So this just popped up. It’s been reported that Amazon.com now lists a double pack of Sonic Mania (the vanilla version it appears) and Team Sonic Racing for Switch. Also it’s not clear if this is yet another of those “put two boxes in a cardboard sleeve” type of releases that Sega do occasionally, as opposed to cramming both games into one cartridge/disc.

Sega Ages Sonic 2 (Switch) releasing on Feb 20th in the west

It’s finally coming out, and bizarrely before a Japanese release date has been revealed. Sega just revealed that both Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sega Ages Puyo Puyo Tsu are coming to both NA and EU on Feb 20th. Sega also opened up the western page for the game as seen here.

Yukio Kusumoto talks about the origins of Sonic Mania Adventures

Comicbook recently sat down with Yukio Kusumoto, producer of the Sonic Mania Adventures and Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive animated shorts. The interview, amongst a treasure trove of other facts, summarized how Sonic Mania came to be.

  • The idea came about after the Sonic Boom TV show wrapped up.
  • The team wanted to create a short-form companion piece for a game.
  • Sonic Mania had recently released and the physical release was up-coming, so the short-form content was made for that.
  • Mentions that there are 6 episodes of Sonic Mania Adventures “so far” and that its been a great success.
  • Sonic Mania is a game all about nostalgia and they wanted to find a creator who’s all about Sonic. It wasn’t hard to find a fit for the project and eventually they found Tyson Hesse, who’s worked on some Sega projects on and off and was a storyboard artist at the time.
  • They wanted to replicate the original world of Sonic, and realize it in the style of a 90’s Saturday morning cartoon. They decided to go with traditional hand-drawn animation.
  • They wanted a style close to the game, but is also original and not too polished with a “for the fans, by the fans” feel.
  • They worked for months designing the characters and worked closely with Takashi Iizuka, the head of product development.

[EDIT: Tyson Hesse also chimed in on the story via Twitter, also crediting Sonic Social Manager Aaron Webber for his part in the realisation of Sonic Mania Adventures:

He isn’t mentioned here, but the story of Mania Adventures can’t be told without mentioning Aaron Webber, tbh. Without his championing internally for the value of it there wouldn’t have been animation for Sonic social at all.”

Thanks to Aaron and the many unsung heroes of Sonic Mania and beyond! – AT]

(Update) Two new Tokyo 2020 games announced as Mario & Sonic for Switch and Arcade, Sonic-only game for mobile

Update (April 2nd, 2019 at 10:25PM ET):

Sega of America took down the trailer, so I rehosted it for your convenience!

###

Update (March 30th, 2019 at 2:32PM ET):

Sega just released the HQ assets, including transparent PNG logos, HD versions of the two primary Switch screenshots, as well as the HQ version of the trailer with less compression. I made new screencaps from the HQ version of the trailer.

###

Update (March 30th, 2019 at 9:16AM ET):

Sega have just announced the western release of the games. The Mario & Sonic game for Switch is now called Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The arcade game of course is titled Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – Arcade Edition. Finally, the mobile game is titled Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020.

For some reason, the Tokyo 2020 branding is missing from the logos, but the games are titled as such on the website as well as by Sega in their announcement tweet. All seem to still be published by Sega in the west (a first since London 2012), in fact Sega are publishing the games worldwide, which is a first in Japan where Nintendo published the Mario & Sonic series to date prior. Also, the arcade and mobile games are now dated for Summer 2020 in the west, rather than just the generic 2020 date in Japan. Check out the western website here.

###

At the SEGA FES 2019 event it was announced that the Mario & Sonic series will return with Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Switch. Not only that, a separate arcade game, simply titled Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Arcade Game, was additionally revealed, alongside a Sonic-only mobile game for both iOS and Andriod; Sonic at the Olympic Games.

SEGA previously announced back in October 2016, that they had secured the gaming license for the Tokyo 2020 games, but no confirmation was made that the Mario & Sonic series would be returning alongside Sega’s other more photorealistic Olympic video games to tie in with the event.

The title will be the 6th Olympic game title to feature Mario and Sonic following the Olympic game and Winter Olympic game titles.

Via the official Olympic Video Games website, the Switch game is due to release in Japan in Winter 2019. The arcade game is due sometime in 2020. Finally the mobile game is also due in 2020.

Here are the logos of each game plus two high-quality screenshots of the Switch game. I also included screencaps of the trailer, with all but the last being the Switch game, with the last being the mobile game:
