Takashi Iizuka is Really Interested in Remaking Sonic Adventure

Speaking with Retro Gamer magazine in their newest issue featuring a making of Sonic Adventure feature as teased before, Sonic Team’s boss Takashi Iizuka, who also directed Sonic Adventure (as well as Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog), said the following:

“It was the first highspeed 3D action game that also featured a scenario highlighted with six different stories, the A-life Chao, six unique styles of gameplay – it is a unique game offering even 20 years after its release.

At the time, it also wasn’t just a solitary software release, it was the title to bring people to the Dreamcast and we were given the budget to make something to showcase the hardware.

However, it was the very first 3D game that we worked on and looking at it now I can see the rough edges it has, which really makes me want to remake it again.”

Sonic Adventure was a launch title for the Dreamcast way back in 1998 in Japan and in 1999 in the west. It later got a port to GameCube as Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut, with a PC port of that just a few months after. Then it got an HD release on PS3 and 360 back in 2010, and then on Steam in 2011.

  1. As long as they remake it faithfully and not make it Sonic Generations – Adventure edition, I’m all for it.

    1. In that case why not just play the ps3 port? Also seeing how badly the games have aged, maybe a remake similar to Ratchet PS4 game would be better. Same locations, but levels are designed to inclde new and old sections.

      1. I wouldn’t, the Dreamcast original’s the best way to play it as all the currently available versions are ports of the inferior/ much glitchier DX version.
Its a shame that this is the case as it makes the game look worse these days than it actually was at the time…

    2. I have low expectations but let me be real… a Sonic Adventure Remake would be absolutely amazing. Please, Sonic Team. Give it to us. I only hope they keep the modernized tropes such as boosting and 2D transitioning out of it. Full 3D platforming that rewards exploration and skill. Just like the good ‘ol days.

  2. If I could make a recommendation, remake it through Sega Ages on Switch. Have the option between the original voice cast and the current one in audio, bring back all the features that were added in DX, including the Game Gear games, and add a two-player competitive mode.

  3. Yessir, I would love to see another Sonic Adventure remake. In fact, I would like to see Cream the Rabbit as a playable character, and new stages.

    1. I second cream the rabbit to be a playable character she was the only unplayable one, she her flap her ears in front of the hotel made me though that she would have been playable later on. Also please stay true to the dreamcast version in rework it from the ground up, you know toys for bob did a good job on spyro, but I wish activision didn’t rush them to release the game, because it’s not all on the disc. Back to sonic adventure if we can’t get a rework right now then release a remastered , but stay true to the dreamcast version, okay sega also preload the sx on the disc, I will definitely buy it if on the ps4, ps5 even though it would be a while, now the switch needs to have 2 terabyte, then I would be sold on it. Don’t get me wrong I will still be buying games you can only get on the wii u.

  4. As long as it has Chao again I’m all for it!! Just Give me Chao! Have I ever told you how much I love Chao?

  5. SUUUURE YOU ARE.

I bet it’s the Final Fantasy VII remake of Sonic where they just inject modern gameplay concepts into a game I liked just fine as it was.

    RRREEEE

  6. Make Metal Sonic’s running animation not be 1:1 Sonic’s. Heh, I really enjoyed the DX stuff, even mission mode but I can’t see the Game Gear games making a return.

Also since SA1’s missing widescreen on the HD ports I’d dig a new release. As for tweaking controls that sounds like a rather risky thing to do.

  7. Cameos from characters of the past.
While their at it a remake of HEROES with the 2 scrapped teams would be great.

  8. If they do remake it I would want more stages maybe a few more unique paths that wasn’t there before. Make Station Square more lively (maybe expand the places). I’d like the character fights to be better cause honestly they were pathetic. Try to bring back some old voice actors if not have an option to change the voices from the new to old. Finally make the chao garden more lively and fun for chao and more chao games

  9. But Iizuka-san! You said we shouldn’t work backwards towards the past just to give people what they want. The only time you’re ever supposed to ignore that is if you’re looking for yet another excuse to force the Classic aesthetic into Modern games. Lol

Wait, did he actually direct those? I could have sworn he was mostly a developer on those titles…

As much as I would love to see an Adventure remake (be it as faithful as possible or Generations: Adventure Edition, I’m fine either way), I’m not so sure I trust the Sonic Team of now to make it. Certainly not with Iizuka’s ever-changing mind in charge. I get that he worked closely on the old titles but considering the last few games I’m not even sure an Adventure game would be safe.

And again, after being blatantly hypocritical about not wanting to make an Adventure 3 because going backwards in any way that has nothing to do with the Classics is wrong and we can’t just give the fans what they want, now he’s suddenly musing the idea of an Adventure 1 remake? Yeesh, maybe the negative reception to Forces is finally catching up to him.

  10. Seeing as the game is 20 years old (now 21 since were in 2019) it makes sense for them to make a remake from the ground up like Crash and Spyro did.

But they need to bring back as many original VA’s as they can, having roger instead of ryan wont go down well for most fans.

Its like how they got Tom Kenny back as Spyro it was super exciting, even if his voice sounded abit different but it was great and refreshing to hear him back as well as the others they got back.

Plus Ryan could come back just for the adventure remakes / adventure 3.

  11. From the team that brought you Sonic Colors, Generations AND Sonic Forces… D: True, a remake of Sonic Adventure should be perfect, but the original was released before all the whining. Leave it up to them to make it as good as possible. It’ll be alright.

  12. Everyone here is blinded by nostalgia. Sonic Team in their current cannot recreate Sonic Adventure, they have no understanding of what makes Sonic good.

Also, do you really want Roger Craig Smith to be voicing Sonic’s iconic lines from SA1? They won’t bring back Ryan Drummond.

  13. Hope this gets made! Especially if they can make improvements where possible, such as ;

    (A) Remove Big, Amy and Gamma completely
    (B) Either remove the hub worlds or implement side quests/mini games to make them more interesting
    (C) No tornado levels in Tails’s story since you play them in Sonic’s story. Also redesign them to give players more control.
    (D) For bosses that are repeated in other character stories, make slight changes to make each of them different ( i.e Chaos 4, Chaos 6 and Egg Hornet.
    (E) Make character battle much longer and more difficult.

Here’s hoping Sonic Adventure 2 gets the same attention.
