Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoStH) [1993 – 1995]
The first time Sonic featured in an animation. A basic slapstick cartoon involving 65 random unusual adventures. A twisted, yet surprisingly faithful adaptation of the early games. Be prepared for some wacky stuff before entering this section.
Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) [1993 – 1994]
Considered by many to be the best of the Sonic cartoons, this show gained Sonic the love and respect of hundreds of teenagers, children and even young adults. This show was still based on storylines of the games, but took it to a new level, breathing life into the characters and world, and introducing new characters.
Sonic the Movie (Sonic OVA) [1996, 1999]
A one-off hour long Original Animated Video, butchered from two half hour episodes in Japan, dubbed “Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie” in English by ADVision. Nicely animated, badly dubbed, this anime features Sonic in a strange world with 2 dimensions. Reasonably faithful to the games, but not as much as the last 2 cartoons.
Sonic Underground [1999]
This cartoon is probably the most bittersweet of the lot. Despised by many Sonic fans for it’s absolute zero loyalty to the games, this show goes even further than the Sonic Anime and places Sonic in a different role in a completely different universe whatsoever. Did I mention he has a brother and sister, is the son of the Queen, and plays music? Enter this section to see probably the most… daring game to cartoon adaptations ever made.
Sonic X [2003 – 2004]
Sonic X is another dubbed Japanese anime, but this time an entire series with fluent animation and gorgeous art. Sonic and his friends have returned to their original roles from the games, but have been transported to the world of humans, along with the Chaos emeralds and Dr Robotnik!
Sonic: Night of the Werehog [2008]
A short CG animation created in-house by SEGA’s creative studios, Night of the Werehog was produced to coincide with the release of the video game Sonic Unleashed. It gained a cult following for its Pixar-like charm and quality, and has since been re-used in SEGA’s Joypolis theme park in Tokyo as a 3D sit-in ride.
Sonic Boom [2014 – Present]
SEGA America developed the Sonic Boom universe to bring the franchise to a wider audience, introducing re-designed characters and a new storyline that sits alongside the traditional Sonic Team game universe as its own side-canon. The Sonic Boom cartoon series is the most popular facet of this trans-media franchise that also spans video games, merchandise and comics.
