Sonic Generations: More Rooftop Run Details

A Sonic Generations preview from Digital Spy and SEGA’s latest batch of screenshots left us wondering if Sonic & Knuckles‘ Flying Battery Zone would feature partially within the game’s Rooftop Run stage. Now, thanks to a new preview from PlayStation Universe, we know that is not the case.

Before we talk about Classic Sonic, I want to clear something up. Other previews have been vague on what happens at the end of the Classic Sonic version, and some fan sites have suggested that you may see other old levels within levels due to this. This is simply untrue in Roof Top Run, which we’ll explain in due time.

The preview then goes on to detail exactly how the section with the airship plays out.

Due to the amount of classic and even modern levels that Sonic Team has not been able to directly include in the game, recreating all these stages from scratch for each Sonic allows them to take inspiration from other sections. In City Escape and Roof Top Run, Classic Sonic sees the return of the floor springs from Sonic 2 (the ones where you run over them and they cause Sonic to spring up and do a barrel roll in the air), and a platforming section reminiscent of the boss in Labyrinth Zone of Sonic 1 awaits the Blue Blur as he makes his way up the Clock Tower.

Some Sonic fans may remember you had to do this with the Werehog in Unleashed, but let us assure you, it is nowhere near as frustrating or fiddly. Once at the top, the “airship” is in range, and you rev up a Spin Dash to go into it, only to exit it a moment or so later, the camera tracking Sonic from outside the airship as he zips around it from left to right, implying he’s damaging it as he goes. As he steps onto a platform at the base of the airship, he sprints towards the goal post in a set piece based on the bombing run in Sonic 3’s Angel Island Zone.

It certainly sounds like an interesting set piece. Hopefully we’ll see footage of it soon at any of the various upcoming gaming events Sonic Generations will be playable at in the next month.

SEGA Officially Reveals More Sonic Generations Details

SEGA has updated their Sonic Generations product page and added some more details, most notably in the ‘Key Features’ sections for both the PS3 & Xbox 360 versions and the Nintendo 3DS version. Those who have been tracking all of the information leaked from the PS3 and Xbox 360 demo in various forums will find the details for that version very familiar, but for those who haven’t, the page reveals that throughout the story players will free Sonic’s friends, fight some of his rivals and revisit big boss battles. After saving each of Sonic’s friends, you’ll then be able to have them join you in some of the game’s other missions.

The game’s Street Pass feature gives you the ability to collect new content and unlock bonus material, which SEGA says increases “variety, interaction and replayability”.

Meet Chip

Game Videos have posted a cool off-screen video of Sonic Unleashed in action at Leipzig’s Game Convention. The most notable about this video – despite the fact that you can see for yourself how awesome it’s looking with it’s alternate paths – is the rather random first appearance of a new character called Chip. Now, remember when we broke news that Sonic Unleashed would add a new character to the series? Looks like we totally called it, but we never thought Sega would reveal his/it existence so unceremoniously. Seriously, we’d have thought there’d be some sort of super-announcement for it or something.

Chip, from what we’ve seen and heard, appears to be some sort of tutorial pal and may well be integral to the story. Long as he doesn’t say a damn word during levels (so far so good) and stays on a totally platonic relationship with Sonic, I think we’ll be OK. Seems kinda cute actually. I hope Sega are as careful with Chip in consideration for future games as they have been with Blaze and Marine and not, for example, Shadow, however. I wouldn’t want to see this purple thing in every Sonic game since.

Check out Sonic’s assessment of his ranking at the end of the level with Chip, and the proceeding breakdance once he’s discovered he got an ‘S’ ranking. Pure Sonic gold, that is.

Slimy Sonic Chronicles Screens

New stage screens have appeared for Sonic Chronicles at Leipzig – this will most likely be playable at the press event itself at Sega’s booths. We get to see a lot more of Knuckles here, including some of his POW moves, and we come face to face with a slimy thing that appears to invite Sonic into his parlour. Ooh er missus. Those who played the Nintendo DS RPG at the Summer of Sonic convention can agree that this is shaping up to be a rather awesome little title for the hedgehog, and I’m particularly liking the ‘action’ artwork that appears in the top screen when a character performs a POW move. It doesn’t look like Uekawa’s work, but it sure makes me wish they’d do away with all the CG artwork these days and pump out some drawn stuff now and then.

I had an interview with Miles Holmes, the Lead Designer at BioWare for Sonic Chronicles a while ago, which should be published on a website I’ve been writing for very soon. His favourite game is Sonic Heroes, as a random tidbit of information there. Interesting, no?

E3: Watch a Demo of Unleashed in Action

Gamespot’s at E3. We aren’t. SAD FACE. But luckily Gamespot’s able to pick up the slack that we can’t otherwise manage, and have grabbed a SEGA Brand Manager guy to help showcase some real in-game demos of Sonic Unleashed. What’s interesting to note here is that the 3D segments, contrary to popular belief, are not on rails, and many are fully 3D analog-stick playable. We saw some areas in the China stage that looked more like a SatSR-style “shift left, shift right” style of 3D play, but generally we’re looking at some good old 3D movement here.

The guy demoing the game’s not too hot, and there was one section where Sonic glitched and failed an automatic spring-to-grind section, but the rest looks solid. We’re told that there will be equal nighttime versions of every stage, and Sonic segments will be much longer than the Werewolf ones to compensate for the speed at which you blitz through them. The nighttime alter ego is officially labelled as ‘Sonic the Werehog’, and the fighting aspect does look pretty cool.

Truth be told, this demo lays some concerns to rest, particularly with the Werehog. Sure, we could have done without any brawling segments at all and just had Sonic run from left to right and up a Z-axis, but the nighttime sections do look like they’re going to hold some enjoyable, classic platforming action. There are two attack buttons and a grab move in addition to your jump (which also has a double jump for additional height), and while Werehog isn’t as agile as traditional Sonic, he can use his massive arms to grab ledges and pull himself up. We still don’t like carrying pots around but grabbing enemies doesn’t seem compulsory at least. In fact, the whole thing reminds us that we want a new Streets of Rage game; this mechanic would be perfect for it.

SEGA pretty much confirmed that alternative characters may be playable (using the classic PR “We’re not ready to announce anything yet”) besides Sonic, which sounds like a bowl of fail. Let this be a game about Sonic for once and not his over-publicised friends. Sonic Unleashed will also have an online component, although quite what this is has yet to be revealed. Check the video if you have half an hour, it’s a good watch.

E3: 36 New Chronicles Screens

OK, we dropped the ball a little bit. We didn’t pick up on the new screenshots released by the SEGA Press guys the other day (we may add them to this article later on though), but these are new-new screens, literally fresh from today’s E3 Experience. What you get here is a few shots of a volcano-esque fiery area where you most likely run into Knuckles and Shadow in. There are some screens of Chao being used in battle, and a few character’s special POW moves too.

Finally, you also get to see the GUN Commander in full cartoony form. Hopefully he won’t break down and cry when he sees Shadow or something. Dude’s a soldier man. Ain’t no time to get sappy now.

E3: 23 New Unleashed Screens

Take a gander at all these new screenshots of Sonic Unleashed. High quality and everything. Some are from stages you’ve seen before, some are from the new China level, and some are HQ snaps of the Werewolf action. If nothing else it’s looking both interesting and tasty. Not an awful lot to report on these snaps otherwise besides the massive reach Were-Sonic appears to have to beat down foes, and some rather nice enemy design during the Sonic segments. Like the rather cool looking robot in the image below, which looks like something out of Knuckles’ Chaotix. If they’re called Badniks as well, that would be win. SEGA, make it happen.

E3: See the Were-Hog in Action!

While everyone else was getting bored watching Nintendo’s boring E3 conference, SEGA have stepped up and released a bunch of their content for upcoming Sonic games, including at last revealing how the Werewolf gameplay will be like. The trailer also shows some new elements to Sonic play, including advancing to upper regions of a stage by successful button presses and a new stage known as ‘China’, complete with looping dragon platforms. The track you’re hearing is called “Endless Possibility”, a theme song involving Jaret Reddick from Bowling for Soup. Ugh.

What is also quite jarring is the gameplay featuring the Werewolf itself, and it’s clear why SEGA kept it all a secret until just now. Quite a world apart from the speedy multiple-route gameplay we’ve all known so far, becoming Were-Sonic involves a slower, more powerful method of play. Imagine going as slow as Silver while beating hordes of enemies ala Shadow. This is pretty much the Werewolf gameplay summed up. Oh, and you have to pick up objects and put them in places to open doors too. Erm… hm.

We’re not sure we like it. We demand a playtest, SEGA. We also demand a high-res video, as we can’t see anything with this one. Stay tuned for the HQ version which we’ll put online soon.

Summer of Sonic – 32 Days To Go

The first ever Sonic the Hedgehog convention is taking place in London on August 9th. I’ve been working hard with AAUK of Sonic Wrecks to make this extreme meetup as awesome as possible, and I can safely say we’ve got some pant-soiling stuff ready for your face. To celebrate the fact that we’ve got lots of shit ready for your inner Sonic child, the Summer of Sonic website will be regularly updated. The SoS Blog has just started and will reveal stuff such as special guests, events and other things (Prizes? Games? CAKE!?), so be sure to keep an eagle eye on it.

If I can pull this off, I’m having the biggest beer afterwards…

Portuguese Magazine Reveals New Unleashed Tidbits

The Portuguese magazine Maxi Consolas, has recently revealed new information regarding Sonic Unleashed in their latest preview. The magazine has confirmed that:

  1. Unleashed will have level up system, in which you can enhance and improve Sonic’s abilities, much like an RPG.
  2. There will be other playable characters besides Sonic, however they will only be playable via mini games, reserving most of the game for Sonic. Tails has been the only confirmed character as of yet. There where no details regarding how the mini games would play.
  3. In addition to the African, Greek, and “High Europe” stages, there will also be levels that take place in China and New York City.
  4. Levels alternate between the 3D and 2D perspectives every thirty seconds or so. Camera work is impressive.
  5. Good impressions overall. They only complain about the frame rate.

Sonic Officially Unleashed!

After weeks of hype and hearsay, SEGA finally confirm the existance of Sonic Unleashed which will be released almost universally on all major platforms: XBox 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 AND PS2.

The game is set to use a new “Hedgehog engine” which will combine (as many have already seen) both 2D “classic” gameplay with rich new 3D environments. The aim of this is to amalgamate the new look of Sonic the Hedgehog with some older elements back from older Sonic titles. SEGA say “The Hedgehog engine will help re-define the gameplay experience for Sonic fans and newcomers to the franchise alike.” Continue reading Sonic Officially Unleashed!

New Sonic Chronicles info and screens

CVG have some exclusive info and screenshots of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood from the upcoming issue of NGamer. The article reveals controls for things like loop-de-loops, springboards and platform jumping. The story is revealed to be more linear than most Bioware titles.

Most surprising of the info is that the tone of the game will be darker than what has been previously shown such as at one moment in the game Amy says to Rouge “You’re a tramp!”.

One of the new screenshots reveal the character summary page where you can see each characters attack list. In the screenshot shown Sonic’s attacks are revealed which all sound pretty interesting. Other screenshots display some battle sequences.

Now added to the Characters page are Dr. Eggman, Nights, and “Emy” (lol, Engrish). We of course knew about Nights already, but it’s nice to have Amy and Eggman confirmed, and with some spiffy new CG art, too.

I’ll keep checking the site for more updates as the launch date draws near.

More new screenshots and four new Rivals 2 Videos

IGN have released four new gameplay videos of Sonic Rivals 2, one of them including a story scene between Tails and Espio. Ironic to the game’s name it look’s like characters will be coupled to WORK TOGETHER –

  • Sonic and Tails
  • Knuckles and Rouge
  • Shadow and Metal Sonic (Fan-fiction love story writers will be loving this -_-‘)
  • Silver and Espio (and this -_-‘)

It also look’s like we have adventure maps like the one in Sonic Advance 2 making a return.

There is alot of voicework in these video’s(Espio sounds terrible in my oppinion) and doesn’t seem to be written very well, for example at the start of the Knockout mode battle between Sonic and Knuckles Sonic says “Let’s race”. Continue reading More new screenshots and four new Rivals 2 Videos

NiGHTS: JoD to use Weather Channel [UPDATED]

It’s been rumoured for quite some time now, but SEGA officially announced today that the Weather Channel function will effect the ‘My Dream’ Chao Garden like area of the new and upcoming NiGHTS Journey of Dreams game for Wii.

The channel seems to give impact on the weather conditions of the game mode, showing effects such as Snow, Clouds and Thunderstorms. This is the first Wii title to make use of the Weather Channel in the actual game itself, and just like the origional titles changing music for Saturn (along with Christmas NiGHTS date and clock function) offers something new and uses the latest gaming technology to full advantage. New Sonic Rivals 2 Trailer

A new Sonic Rivals 2 trailer has shown up, it shows footage of the final 2 battle modes out of the 6 – King of the Hill and Tag Mode.

King of the Hill mode is simply battling to earn the most points and keep the highest score while Tag mode is a pass the bomb kind of affair.

Omochao also makes a guest appearance in the King of the Hill mode, I’m guessing he’s a referee because he has a flag and seems to freeze players maybe to penalize them.

In Tag Mode it look’s like each player has a timer in which the bomb will explode if they hold it which is weird. It also look’s like you can ride rockets.

Like most trailers there is no music in this one.

Sonic Rivals official European site launched

SEGA of Europe have launched their official site for the Playstation portable game Sonic Rivals this week. A fair warning however, the site is in Flash.

The site features many screenshots, 3 interesting movies of gameplay features in this amazing looking game and much information, including the names of each of the race courses and profiles for each of the 4 main characters; Sonic the hedgehog, Shadow the hedgehog, Silver the hedgehog and Knuckles the echidna.

According to the site, the names of the 6 race courses or “Zones” as the site refers to them as (Perhaps a nod to the earlier 2D games in the series and Sonic heroes) are Zone 1 – Forest falls, Zone 2 – Colosseum highway, Zone 3 – Sky park, Zone 4 – Crystal mountain, Zone 5 – Death yard and Zone 6 – Meteor base. 4 bosses of 4 of the zones have also been revealed.

The Egg turtle will be the boss of Forest falls zone, Egg falcon shall be the boss of colosseum highway zone, the Egg lynx will be the boss of crystal mountain zone and the Egg kong is presumed to be the boss of death yard zone. Each have been created by the evil villain Dr Eggman and not only does the player have to land the finishing blow on the contraption to win, he also has to stave off his rivals in order to accomplish this! For all of your characters rivals shall be present and trying to defeat Dr Eggman himself.

Sonic and the Secret Rings JPN Site Open

The Nintendo Wii title, Sonic and the secret of the rings has had it”s japanese site opened today! You can visit the new site (Be warned, it is in flash) through the link in the “MORE INFORMATION” Box at the bottom of this page. Also of note is that the game’s japanese title is to be “”SONIC to Himitsu no RING”

A newly revealed official render show that Sonic himself is wearing an odd glowing ring on the middle finger of his right hand. It is unknown exactly what this plain yet mysterious looking piece of jewelry is or what it does but one can safely assume that it has a big link to the storyline of the game that is due out some time in 2007.

In other somewhat related news, the gaming site IGN have updated their Sonic and the secret of the rings site with new screenshots of the game in action (Follow the link road in the “DOWNLOADABLE MEDIA” box at the bottom of this page). Adorning the bottom left hand corner of the recent screenshots is a small image depicting the control scheme of the game. Whether or not it is showing the player what to press on the Wii”s controller is anyone’s guess but it seems feasible….
