Former Sonic Comic Writer Reveals Final Copy of Sonic Saturday Morning Cartoon “Bible”

There’s nothing quite as fascinating as early Sonic the Hedgehog lore. Throughout the nearly 30 year run of the famous hedgehog’s career, fans across generations have dug into every nook and cranny possible to isolate anything from merchandise to early prototypes of classic games.

One such treasure is a “continuity bible,” a document that is given to anyone responsible for creating official media based off a particular intellectual property. Today, we’ve unearthed what might be a goldmine.

The Spin: The Freedom Fighters are Gone (and That’s Okay)

Before you send me a ton of hate mail, let me explain.

First, we gotta go back to the beginning of cartoon adaptions of video games. It wasn’t always easy to do. In the early days of video games you had a protagonist that you played as, an antagonist but no real story tying them together. If there was one, it was VERY bare bones. With very little to go on so the cartoon creators had to come up with some kind of plot that could play for 13 episodes on a Saturday morning. UPDATE: Cyborg Eggman — New SatAM Concept Art Found

Update: Even more concept art found.

First up is Rotor, not much to say about this one, other than he looks slightly more cartoonish.

rotorconcept

Secondly, we have another Bunnie concept art, she looks a lot more like a robot in this one.

bunnierobot

Actually, scratch that, she looks less like a robot/cyborg and more like she’s wearing power armour.

And finally… we have this… Cyborg Robotnik, with electric pony tail.

robot eggman

That is awesome!

Original Story: It’s not unusual to go onto ebay and find animation cels from episodes of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog or any other Sonic cartoon… However, what is odd are finds listed here. A seller who has listed and who has a history of listing official annimation cells from AOSTH and SatAM has listed a bunch of concept art from the show which shows radically different designs for some of the main characters which have never been seen before.

First up is Princess Sally… who is now a human!

sallyconceptIs it just my imagination, or does she look a lot like the Princess from Dragons Lair?

Here is another early concept of Princess Sally who looks more like her final animal form.

sallyconcept2There’s something about her which looks Middle Eastern, almost like Princess Jasmine from Aladdin?

Up next is Bugs Bunny’s after an operation… Sorry I mean Bunnie…

bunnyconcept

Now… this is where things get… stranger…. Behold… Dr Robotnik!

robotnikconept

He has devil horns green skin! How is this possible? Do I need to comment further on this? The design looks a lot like a villain from other cartoon shows at the time, but it looks absolutely nothing like Robotnik.

So this next one is a strange one. Mainly because I don’t remember it from any episode, but a golden glow Sonic was also added, however the date would put this very close if not prior to Sonic 2.

supersonic

And finally we have… the thing which made me roar with laughter when I saw it… Robotnic’s Chicken!

robotnikschicken

Please… Sega… make this a playable character in Sonic Boom. He can wander around the levels pecking up rings and randomly screaming at enemies. Also here’s a challenge, mod generations so we play as Robotnic’s Chicken, bonus points for custom animations and clucking noises.  I also want fanart and comics too!

Thanks to iDEATH & Indigo Rush for the finds.

Sound Test Saturday: Heroic Hedgehog

What is this day filled with so many wonders, casting its spell that I am now under?

…oh yeah, it’s Saturday! And what other wonder is there to feature on The Sonic Stadium save the Sound Test?

We’ve got a trio of remixes put together by members of the Sonic community: one that can only be done beautifully through the ebony and ivory, one that allows listeners to soar above raging dogfights, and one that can only be spelled through guitar as an epic win!

First up is, believe it or not, a compilation of all 4 Sonic Heroes themes in a wonderful 6 minute medley on the piano. Yes: Follow Me for Team Rose, We Can for Team Sonic, Team Chaotix for… well, Team Chaotix, and This Machine for Team Dark. Imagine my reaction when this landed in my inbox!

Without further ado, here’s Mister Macanulty with Heroic Hedgehogs!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi8yJN1vjnM

Now this is the kind of thing I love seeing in my inbox! There’s nothing like a good piano rendition of some of my favourite tunes, you know? And Macanulty here did a spectacular job here weaving four entirely different tracks together. Nerves were soothed, emotions were calmed, and it was a start to a great day. Thanks for sending this gem over, Mac!

For Act 2, Dill Tasker sent over his take on Sonic 4 Episode 2‘s sky-piercing stage, Sky Fortress Act 2 D&B Remix!

Does this make you want to get up and dance like a pro? …or dance like an idiot when no one’s around, maybe? Yes? Good. Smooth to the ears, but with a fast pace to keep you going. A definite winner for a remix on a Sonic 4 piece. Great job, Dill!

And for a bombastic finale, we got something for the metalheads! To those who grew up with Sonic in the 90s, this mouthwatering medley put together by 331Erock is for you! Here’s Sonic Meets Metal!

Eric Calderone’s feat here is nothing short of the word amazing. I feel faint just listening to him tear his instrument a new one. As if his solo towards the end didn’t spell “awesome” out for you, this mixture of Green Hill, Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, and the theme to SatAM is a true love letter to a way past cool childhood! Special thanks to Etna on the SSMB for the find!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be abusing the replay button to each of these tunes over and over again until I end up turning deaf.

Found an interesting remix, cover, or original track somewhere on the web? Got one of your own you’d want to show the world through The Sonic Stadium and SEGASonic: Radio? If you’ve answered yes to either question, then send everything you got over to vizardjeffhog@sonicstadium.org!

Sonic Mega Mix DVD Compilation Hits U.S. Next Month

A new listing has appeared at a few online retailers such as Amazon that reveals Cookie Jar Entertainment will be releasing a DVD compilation on January 4th 2011 featuring episodes from Sonic’s original three cartoon series Sonic the Hedgehog (AKA SatAM), Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Underground. The compilation is titled “Sonic Mega Mix“, and according to retailer Future Shop it will contain one disc with a running time of 155 minutes. Future Shop also says the DVD is region locked at Region 1, so fans outside of the U.S. looking to import this will need a multi-region DVD player to run it.

No information is available regarding which episodes or how many will feature on the DVD, but at 155 minutes you can expect about 6 episodes total. As for price, Amazon is listing it at $9.99, Barnes & Noble at $9.01 and Future Shop at $5.99 Canadian.

Jaleel White to Provide Voice for Sonic Fan Film

Following an announcement on SonicFanFilm.com, Eddie LeBron (the director of the Megaman Fan Film) appears to have recruited the classic vocals of Jaleel White, the voice of Sonic throughout the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and the SatAM cartoon series, in order to reprise his role for a short 10-20 minute fan film.

To quote a statement from LeBron on the site:

As of early October, we have officially signed Jaleel White to voice to do the voice of the titular character, “Sonic the Hedgehog”. Jaleel White first entered the public eye as Steve Urkl in the TV sitcom. “Family Matters” and since then, he has been in various feature films and has also entered voice acting. One of his most popular voice acting roles was as Sonic the Hedgehog in various cartoon adaptations. He is widely known by fans as THE voice of Sonic; as we do. Thus, we want Jaleel’s involvement on this.

LeBron goes on to detail the format of the live action movie, which hopes to take most of its inspiration from the earlier Sonic titles, as well as to include a completely CGI Sonic.  It is hoped the final production of the short will be premiered at the Screw Attack Gaming Convention in 2011.

In Honor of Ben Hurst: The SatAM Sea3on Comic

One of the things Mr. Hurst pursued for years was a third season for SatAM. In fact, one of the biggest things he disliked about Sonic Underground was the fact that it could have been the finale that SatAM lacked.

Leave it to the fans to take a step to finally realize his vision. Enter: Sonic the Hedgehog Sea3on. Meant to act as a third season for the classic cartoon, Sea3on is a surprisingly awesome fan made comic from the good people of FUS, not to be confused with a similar take on the story that the same website had attempted to realize many years earlier.

The best thing about this comic is that it feels like SatAM. The comic features strong writing and art, and has managed to achieve a constant weekly release since it started last year.  I would like to extend my kudos to the creative team, as I am sure Mr. Hurst would be really happy with what you’ve accomplished. Please keep the comic going in his memory.

This comic is being written by FUS member Gojira007, with art for these first bunch of pages by Salamander.

Now, to start you all off on this comic, I have included the first five pages of the series below. If you want to read the rest, please visit the site here.

Avatar Doodle Contest: The Winners

Ok, so a couple of weeks back we were treated to a sneaky peak at some DLC for Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on the XBox 360 over on the SEGA Blognik. I set a little task to go about doodling on the avatar in a no-holds barred contest to basically make as humorous an entry as possible. Well as per usual at the promise of free goodies, the entries came in their masses, which were whittled down to just a handful. The TSS staff then had a look, and out of the selection we picked a winner…the quality of the entries was so spectacular, that I think they deserve a mention here too…

3RD PLACE: MUSHROOM 64

It looks like Sonic is taking a real pounding! Genius! Mushroom 64 is the proud winner of a First4Figures mini Knuckles figurine!

2ND PLACE: Adamis

It looks like two wheels are better than four! Big is leading the pack! I think the bias for anything Big related shone through here! Again, hillarious!  Adamis is the proud winner of a First4Figures mini Sonic figurine!

WINNER: T. Brockmüller

…OK, so I’m out of ASR quotes….but Rotor’s face cracks me up in this last frame. Also, SatAM really does not get enough love! Props to you Mr. Brockmüller – you are the proud receipient of a SEGA Prize Europe Sonic plush!

All winners please send your postal details to the competition email address, and I’ll get your prizes out to you! A big thumbs up to all of the other competitors…keep an eye out for more competitions in the future!

#4 SATAM ABRIDGED

In our forth episode, Todd Hakusho takes us on his own “special” look at a classic Sonic cartoon.

Sonic the Hedgehog (also known as: Sonic SatAM, because it usually aired in a Saturday morning timeslot) is an American animated series created by DIC Entertainment with the partnership of Sega of America, and was loosely based on the video game series. The series aired from September 18, 1993 until May 1995 in the United States.

Signed SatAM DVD on eBay

It’s clear to see that the best release of the SatAM DVD box set is the American one. Brits have also been lucky enough to see a SatAM boxset, but we don’t have any of that awesome artwork on the cover, nor the fan art that adorns the inside packaging. So what better than to get a copy of the American DVD boxset that’s also signed by Series 2 writers Ben Hurst and Pat Allee? Just your luck then, as such a item has hit eBay recently.

Former Fans United for SatAM website owner, Quexinos, is putting up this copy of the DVD boxset, said to be one of only three in the world to exist. The eBay auction includes a certificate of authenticity too, so you know you’re getting the real deal. According to current owner of FUS, RockyRaccoon, the auction’s proceeds are going to “Chief-Aid”; a campaign to help FUS Forum ‘Chief’ out of a financial hotspot. He’s a single father who’s just been laid off, and at this time of the year that’s just cold and brutal.

If you want to help the “Chief-Aid” cause and grab yourself a limited edition SatAM boxset in the process, then head on over to the eBay auction here to place your bid. The current bid is $41 at time of writing, as is the case with these ‘charity’ style things, if you feel like affording a bit more for what you feel the boxset is worth then it could truly change someone’s Christmas for the better. Our wishes go to ‘Chief’!

Cookie Jar purchases DIC, obtain rights to Sonic the Hedgehog

DIC Entertainment, owners of the television rights to Sonic the Hedgehog, has been bought out by another US based group, Cookie Jar accoring to playthings.com.

LOS ANGELES and TORONTO—Cookie Jar Group is purchasing licensor DIC Entertainment and its related businesses for $31.5 million, the two companies announced this morning.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cookie Jar will purchase all of the issued and outstanding equity in DIC in a transaction valued at approximately US $87.6 million. Upon closing, DIC will continue as a subsidiary of Cookie Jar, which will remain a private company.

The deal will give Cookie Jar access to the merchandising and licensing rights to such brands as American Greetings’ Strawberry Shortcake; Mommy & Me, the parent-oriented, direct-to-retail product line featured at Wal-Mart; as well as Inspector Gadget, Horseland, Cake, Madeline and Eloise, among others. Its programming library includes nearly 3,000 half hours of children’s programming with series such as Sabrina, Liberty’s Kids, Sonic The Hedgehog and Care Bears.

The purchase also includes DIC’s European subsidiary, Copyright Promotions, and DIC’s one-third interest in KidsCo, an international children’s television channel created in partnership with NBC-Universal and Corus Entertainment.

Doubtful that Cookie Jar will do anything with the license, but I guess its newsworthy.  News has been slow lately.  :-/

Simpsons Storyboard Artist to Attempt SatAM Comeback

We’ve all been here before, but someone has designs to pitch an idea to SEGA/DiC/the powers that be to invest in a revival of arguably the greatest Sonic cartoon, SatAM. This ‘someone’ however appears to be a chap called Matthew Sullivan, who has worked on The Simpsons, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Family Guy, so he at least has some credentials.

Posting the image above in the Fans United for SatAM forums, Matt is preparing a pitch that he hopes will kickstart a new series of the classic Saturday morning show, with the hopeful inclusion of writer Ben Hurst. He makes no guarantee that this pitch will work, but as a fan himself states that he will try his damndest.

We wish you all the best Matt – if you have any questions he’s opened the floor on the FUS forums so give him our regards there.

According to Perfect Chaos, a staff member at the Sonic Fan Games Headquarters, the DVD boxset is now available to buy at a local store. It is not officially due for release until Monday the 27th of March, so this may be a mistake on the store’s part.

Quexinos (aka Sonique) of site Fans United for SatAM has reported that another Best Buy store is also selling the set. If you’ve been waiting for this DVD set and are near a Best Buy, you could do a lot worse than to head over there and see if it’s there yet.

Sonic The Hedgehog Movie In Pre-Production?

Rumours have been flying around the Internet for years now about a Sonic The Hedgehog motion picture, however, one of these trails it seems may finally come into fruition. Film maker Richard Kuta has been working on an animated film based on the series known commonly to fans as Sonic SatAM, and has recently received approval for the project from Soloakai Animation.

After successful negotiations with SEGA throughout last year, Kuta and his co-writer initially pitched the film to IDT Entertainment, who mulled over the idea before eventually rejecting it. Since then the team proposed the film to Solokai Animation, who were more than happy to take the project onboard. Continue reading Sonic The Hedgehog Movie In Pre-Production?

Sonic the Hedgehog coming to DVD in early 2007

You read the title right. Sonic’s original saturday morning cartoon show, “Sonic the Hedgehog”, which first aired on ABC in September of 1993, is finally coming to DVD in it’s entire 26 episode long run.

Sonic the Hedgehog, known by it’s fans as “SatAm”, has traveled a long, hard road the last couple of years. The original DVD released in 2002, called “Super Sonic”, contained 5 episodes (counting the hidden episode) from the first season, and was to be a precursor to an entire box set.

That box set was never meant to be, however, as it was cancelled in 2004 for unknown reasons, although it is widely beleived that it was Sega itself that held the box set back. Continue reading Sonic the Hedgehog coming to DVD in early 2007

SatAM 10th Anniversary

Today is the 10th Anniversary of SatAM, some recognize it as the best of the Sonic cartoons and to celebrate this day, Ronic Warihog sent me the below email.

Hello. My name is Ronic Warihog, and I have some news for you on a special day for the Sonic Community.

As some of you may know, today is the 10th Anniversary of the debut of ABC’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ SatAM animated series. It is the show that forever changed the perception of the Sonic world, and while the games were primarily for SEGA fans, the SatAM helped to bring Sonic into mainstream society. It also changed the path of the comics to one of respectability, and became one of the most powerful animated series of all time.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to all 182 individuals who worked on the SatAM, and all of those who have supported the show, past and present. Without the support, the SatAM would probably have been forgotten long ago.
