Sound Test Saturday Archives: Now Loading…

Before the big move to SEGASonic:Radio, I believe that enough time has passed for me to, in a sense, archive all of the Sound Test Saturdays we’ve had over the past three months.

As we move on to bigger things on this column, feel free to dive back into the past and listen through all of the Sound Tests featured on The Sonic Stadium! Should everything go as planned, you can catch up to us on SEGASonic:Radio next week as Freen in Green will be interviewed!

You can catch May and June after the jump!

April

A Funky Premiere of Green Symphonies! Our kickoff on the new weekly column, showcasing Acts 1 and 2 of TheSymphonicGames’ Badnik Factory, a groovy drum cover of Hydrocity Zone Act 2 by FunkFlash, and Freen in Green’s take on Frog Forest from Sonic Heroes, “The Serene Beauty”.

What if Sound Test Saturday… had lyrics? The second issue highlights some hot vocal work from Smooth4Lyfe with “Heart of Fire” (Crisis City), and a rap duet between Darkspeeds and Speedio322 for “Speedway Jam” (Speed Highway).

Green Groves and Jet Set! A very nice and faithful re-interpretation of Green Grove Act 1 from Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis) by Dr. Mack Foxx and EspioKaos, and a very cool Sonic-based original track for Jet Set Radio, put together by Ryuuji14, are featured.

CageKame’s Legendary Rock Covers: Sonic 3 & Knuckles gets some love from this talented Italian guitarist. Sky Sanctuary and Ice Cap gain some awesome solos as a result!

Mash-Up Monday: Beastie Boys Tribute

A little over a month ago, another music legend has passed.

MCA (aka Adam Yauch), a member the renowned hip hop trio known as the Beastie Boys, lost his life to cancer on May 4th. He died at the age of 47.

You might recall Alien/Renegade, one of many musicians who contributed to The Sonic Stadium Music Album. For Mash-Up Monday, he has prepared a trio of mixes consisting of music from the Beastie Boys, all of which being featured here today.

We present to you “An Open Letter to Rusty Ruins”, “Wacky Body Movin”, and “Here’s a Little Final Haunt for Ya”. Enjoy!

Sound Test Saturday: 21st Anniversary Edition!

My readers, this day is what all true Sonic fans strive for!

Yes, today is June 23rd, and you all know what that means! The Blue Blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog, is celebrating his 21st birthday today!

So, let’s have a bit of an extravaganza ourselves! 21 is the magic number, so why not go for that many tracks, just for today? A great number of these tracks have been tipped by you guys, and I thank you all for your contributions!

Due to the sheer amount of music to be featured beyond the jump, I’ll refrain myself from commenting on each track. Instead, I will leave you all with this. If everything goes according to plan here, Sound Test Saturday will be moved to SEGASonic: Radio next week. Yes folks, SS:R will return sooner than you think! And with the big move, we will introduce a new feature on our weekly music column: interviews! First ones up are Freen in Green, followed by xTrickyWolfy and Ring Energy should all go well!

If there is any particular artist you would want featured on a future Sound Test Saturday, if there are any remixes, covers, or originals you want to share, if you have work of your own you would like to see up on the site, then do not hesitate to notify me at vizardjeffhog@sonicstadium.org!

That being said, Happy 21st Anniversary, Sonic the Hedgehog! Still unstoppable after 21 years!

[EDIT: Apparently the songs are available now! Go get them! – T]

If you really can’t wait until Sonic Boom or Summer of Sonic to get your Crush 40 fix this year, new songs from their upcoming EP are available for download.

You may also be interested in the physical CD release of their Rise Again EP, which will contain Song of Hope (also available through iTunes) along with the three new songs. Sega Superstars Tennis plus Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing coming to the Mac this summer

In the “better late than never” category, Sega Superstars Tennis and Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing are finally coming to the Mac from Feral Entertainment. It’s unclear whether they’ll be shipped together or separate. Pricing and a set date have not been announced either. At least we know All-Stars Racing will be have online multiplayer which is more than we can say about the PC version. Here’s a statement from Sega’s press release.

Feral Interactive today announced that Sonic the Hedgehog and over 25 other fan-favorite SEGA characters are coming to the Mac this summer! Developed by Sumo Digital Ltd. and published by SEGA for consoles and PC, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and SEGA Superstars Tennis will bring the world’s speediest blue hedgehog to the Mac for the very first time.

A star-studded line-up including Doctor Eggman, Tails, Shadow the Hedgehog, Alex Kidd and Super Monkey Ball’s Aiai will battle it out not only in single player and split-screen multiplayer modes, but also online using Apple’s Game Center technology, a feature of the next version of Mac OS X, Mountain Lion.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sees Sonic and friends race cars, motorbikes and even a “bananamobile” across crazily inventive tracks inspired by the incredible worlds of the SEGA games. Players must find secret shortcuts and use hilarious power-ups to give them the edge, making Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing an exhilarating ride for family, friends and online challengers.

SEGA Superstars Tennis pits classic SEGA characters against each other across four smashing (geddit?) tournaments on totally outrageous tennis courts. Players can also put their racket skills to the test in twisted minigames inspired by classic SEGA titles such as House of the Dead, Space Harrier and Super Monkey Ball.

Sonic Adventure 2 Confirmed For XBox Live Marketplace and PSN

A few weeks back we reported on several Sonic Adventure 2 items scheduled for release on the XBox Live Marketplace and a Harmonix list of future releases, both hinting at the release of the second Sonic Adventure title for download. We can now confirm that Sonic Adventure 2 will be hitting XBLA in the near future, with the game having now been listed on the Marketplace website [EDIT: Link is now dead – T].

From the details given, it looks likely that this HD version of the game will be the Sonic Adventure 2: Battle release with the listing of a “1-2 players” feature (with Chao Karate featured and the XBLA Sonic Adventure being the DX release), along with downloadable content likely to be composed of the avatar items reported earlier this month.

The current scheduled release date is the 3rd of October 2012.

At the moment there are no details as to the cost of this download – we will keep you updated as further infor becomes available.

EDIT: Thanks to Damnhedge’s eagle eyes, he’s spotted a tell-tale hint this will also be making it’s way to the PSN!

Rocketing temperatures, trips planned to a number of resorts, schools closing their doors, burdens of all sorts being lifted from people’s shoulders… It can only mean one thing!

And, to celebrate the oncoming season, it’s only fair that this week’s Sound Test Saturday joins in on the party as well, wouldn’t you say? Freak-Out Friday: Barking Off More Than They Can Chew…

…are Bark the Polar Bear and Bean the Dynamite, for this week’s Freak-Out Friday! (Sorry lassies! No dog puns today!)

Recognized by many as one-shot characters, Bark and Bean made their first and only appearance in the series within the 1996 beat-em-up Sonic the Fighters. Following that, the two were never to be seen, heard from, or playable again in a future Sonic title.

What many fans do not know, however, is that the duo made one more playable appearance following Sonic the Fighters! Bark and Bean have both returned to the ring once again in Fighters Megamix, a Virtua Fighters and Fighting Vipers crossover on the SEGA Saturn, with the two being unlockable characters!

With the game’s release back in late ’96, a Famitsu guidebook for the fighting game hit the shelves in Japan. Interestingly, the Fighters Megamix guide featured more than just  character profiles for the cast; they’ve each had a short comic as well! And yes, that includes Bark and Bean!

Check out their comics down below! (Warning: It’s a tad Engrish.)

Bean’s comic is found after the jump!

TSS Review: Pix’N Love’s The History of Sonic The Hedgehog

It seems funny to think why this has taken so long to make, Sonic is over 20 years old, yet I could name franchises not even half that age which have more printed publications like this. Blast Away! Sonic Blast Hits EU 3DS eShop on Thursday

Following the recent downloadable re-releases of Sonic Triple Trouble and Sonic Labyrinth, the speedy blue hedgehog will be once again be hitting the Nintendo 3DS eShop this week in Sonic Blast for the SEGA Game Gear.

Originally released in 1996, the game is a traditional side-scrolling platformer which sees Sonic and Knuckles teaming up to collect the Chaos Emeralds and take down the evil Dr Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. Sonic Blast was the last Sonic game released for the Game Gear and boasts pre-rendered graphics based on its similarly-titled counterpart, Sonic 3D Blast (known as Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island here in Europe), giving it a unique look when compared to its other 8-bit brothers.

European 3DS owners will be able to download the game from Thursday for £4.50.

Are you planning to have a blast with Sonic Blast? Or do you think it’s more “blast to smithereens” than “blast processing”? Let us know in the comments!

Sound Test Saturday: Generational Stylings

Sonic Generations was a game that set incredibly high expectations for the fans for one reason, and one reason alone: the stages chosen to represent Sonic’s best moments in two different styles. This stretched not only to the gameplay and level design, but to the music as well.

The final release’s level selection was met with high praise, what with highlighting some of the greatest parts of Sonic’s history… but of course, not everyone is left satisfied. As a result, many people from the music community have decided to take matters into their own hands. Already numerous dubbed “Classic” and “Modern” remixes of Sonic favourites have sprouted around the web.

That is why, for this week’s Sound Test Saturday, we will acknowledge a few of these artists who have payed tribute to Sonic Generations and the history of Sonic in their own special way.

With that, let’s begin with a remix that literally raised the bar much higher than some would favour… a White World mix of Sky Troops from Shadow the Hedgehog!

Sumo Talks S&SAR Transformed and Danica Patrick

So, with the recent E3 announcement that US racer Danica Patrick will be featured in new game Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, I’m sure you’re all wondering what the not-Hornet – a Chevy Impala, actually – she’ll be driving in a November NASCAR event looks like up close.

No? Well too bad, our man – or at least one of them – at E3, Alex (aka nuckles89) is here to show you anyway, with a bonus wave from the nearby Sonic…

At least that’s what I think he’s meant to be doing.

Meanwhile, our other man Jason caught up with Sumo Digital’s Joe Neat at the event to talk about what’s changed recently and how Danica will fit into the game.

Wreck-It Ralph Debut Trailer

The first trailer to the upcoming movie Wreck-It Ralph has premiered today! Starring John C. Reilly in the titular role, Ralph is the antagonist of the (fictional) 8-bit arcade game Fix-it Felix! who grows tired of playing the bad guy.

Essentially a video game-based Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the film cameos a wide array of gaming stars, such as Zangief and M. Bison from Street Fighter, the ghosts from Pacman, Bowser from the Super Mario franchise, and our very own Doctor Eggman, all of whom you will see in the trailer below.

The movie is set for theatrical release on November 2nd.
