Freak-Out Friday: Tyson Hesse’s Legendary “Sonic’s Adventure,” Animated by Bocodamondo!

It’s been the lifelong dream of many Sonic fans to work at SEGA or with the Sonic brand in some official capacity, and in many ways, Tyson Hesse has achieved it.

Back when Archie Comics still published their Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe serials, Hesse was brought on board during the later years as one of many great artists behind each carefully crafted page. His beloved take on Classic Sonic soon led to him pencilling the unfortunately ill-fated Sonic: MEGA DRIVE comics, and later directing not only the animation for Sonic Mania‘s preorder trailer, but the official opening for the game as well.

However, there was a time before all of this, a simpler time, when a certain Boxer Hockey wove a masterpiece of a tale – a dramatic epic with running, giants, robots, chases, escapes, True Love, miracles, and finally…

…magical kitsunes and rock-hard fist-nipples.

For Mania Week’s Freak-Out Friday, we take another look back at Hesse’s legendary Sonic’s Adventure, as animated by Bocodamondo back in 2012. Enjoy!

Freak-Out Friday: Sonic Mania Gets the Highest Quality Rip Treatment There Is

The Internet changed forever in November 2014 when Vinesauce made the great discovery that was GRAND DAD, and thus, SiIvaGunner and their bed-rocking high quality rips were born. In July, SEGA celebrated Sonic’s 25 year-legacy by revealing the throwback 2D title Sonic Mania to the world with a hype-inducing debut trailer, accompanying music “Checkpoint” courtesy of Hyper Potions and Nitro Fun.

Now, put them together and what do you get?

Freak-Out Friday: If Mario & Sonic Switched Personalities, Plus Photoshop Contest

What has been said about Mario and Sonic that hasn’t already been said, aside from their bitter history, them being brawl buddies and Olympic sportsmen, and their tentative crossover potential? How about if their personalities were switched, if everything that Mario “Mario” and Sonic “Sonic” were traded?

For today’s Freak-Out Friday, voice actor SungWon “ProZD” Cho and artist Angus McLeod prove to us once and for all that nothing is sacred. Check out the result after the jump, as well as details on our brand new Photoshop Contest!

Freak-Out Friday: “I thought this was Sonic 2” by Hat-Loving Gamer

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a perfect game back when it launched in 1992, pushing the known boundaries of blast processing even further with faster gameplay and more expansive Zones. The Genesis classic also introduced series mainstays Tails and Super Sonic, it marked the beginning of the Death Egg saga, and most importantly, it slices, dices, and makes thousands of julienne fries!

And to top it all off, who could possibly forget the climactic showdown between the fastest thing alive and the Death Egg Robot? Innumerable tributes to this fateful battle have been made already, but that of animator Hat-Loving Gamer—who previously worked on Sonic in the Mushroom Kingdom (1, 2) last year—puts a whole other unique spin on it! Eh? Ehhh?

…check it out below.

Freak-Out Friday: Knuckles Glitches Again in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice

There is an inkling of truth to the age-old saying, said by a wise and dangerously attractive young man:

You can take the glitch out of the echidna, but you can’t take the echidna out of the glitch.” –VizardJeffhog

or

Freak-Out Friday: Sonic the Hedgehog in Smash Bros. Melee

Who remembers those old hoaxes swirling around some of our favourite video games? Those days where prolific liars on the playground took advantage of our gullibility, saying you can only catch Mew in Pokémon Red and Blue from under a truck, or Aerith can live in Final Fantasy VII, or you can find the Triforce in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, all after a complicated set of conditions are met?

fof_smashhoax

There was one hoax Sonic fans would remember from an old issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, where you could unlock Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee by scoring 20 KOs in Cruel Melee mode. Impossible, right? Not so, for YouTuber MagicScrumpy did unlock the one and only video game character who is blue, collects rings, and goes fast by clearing those conditions – check out his video below!

Freak-Out Friday: Cobanermani456’s Sonic Unleashed Fail Compilation

The definition of insanity is “repeating the same actions over and over again while expecting different results,” so says some famous scientist of the previous century. However, such unyielding determination is to be commended, especially when one manages to succeed despite the odds after several attempts, but at what cost?

Such is the case for this week’s Freak-Out Friday, as we take a look at Let’s Player Cobanermani456’s 40 minute-long compilation of his Sonic Unleashed fails. No, we’re not talking about the base game here, my good readers – we’re talking about the incredibly unforgiving and unfairly difficult stages available via the DLC Adventure Packs, with death after death after death compiled into one glorious video with copious amounts of schadenfreude to delight yourself in. To our younger readers though, be warned, for there be lots of swearing!

That said, pull up a chair, grab some snacks and join in on Cobi’s suffering after the cut!

Freak-Out Friday: Segata Sanshiro, SEGA’s Greatest Hero

Consider this Freak-Out Friday a history lesson in gaming, one that dates back to the bygone era of the mid-1990s.

What’s that? “This doesn’t have anything to do with Sonic the Hedgehog,” you say?

You fools.

What you are about to bear witness to has everything to do with Sonic. In fact, this is about something much, much bigger than Sonic, for had it not been for this man, the Blue Blur — no, SEGA as a whole — would not be around today.

The Completionist 100th Episode – Sonic the Hedgehog 2006

One week ago, Jirard “Dragonrider” Khalil had… changed.

That one video gamer who many have come to know and love as The Completionist, for some inexplicable reason, took a turn for the demonic on the heels of his 99th review for the SNES title Mega Man X 3, and Greg Wilmot, series cohost and the last to have interacted with Jirard, had since gone missing.

Somehow, this was all tied to the black sheep of Sonic games, the forever scorned ugly duckling, Sonic Team’s pitch for the 15th anniversary of the franchise.

Freak-Out Friday: Meet Lyric, from Sonic Boom…

Oh hey look, a Freak-Out Friday! Haven’t seen one of these in a while, right?

Anyway! With the Sonic Boom hype in full swing en route to E3, the subseries is expected to introduce a couple of new faces to the franchise this fall — boomerang-wielder Sticks the Badger, and the newest formidable foe, Lyric.

Unfortunately, there are already cries far and wide for the sinister snake to be pulled under the grounds that he just isn’t, well, Sonic-like. SEGA had to break it to Lyric somehow, because you know what they say: you can’t argue with the fans! How will he take the news?

Freak-Out Friday: Sonic 06 – The Musical

I just don’t understand why people like Sonic 06

How could a game that gives you so many horrible experiences…

…be good?

Like a Disney film itself, these were the words which began something special over on the SSMB forums. As a debate rages on in our Sonic 06 topic, member Indigo Rush appeared to spin a musical tale of just why he couldn’t understand anybody who would enjoy the game. Then, it escalated further as another member, Discoid, decided he would sing the song… and now, the world has this wonderful creation. Open your ears and listen well. Lyrics are below the video.

Look at this game
Doesn’t it suck?
Wouldn’t you rather be hit by a truck?
What would you think of a game
A game that just
Really stinks

Look at this game
Glitches untold
How many problems can one game disc hold?
Looking around and you think
Sure
This game really stinks

It’s got glitches and plot holes aplenty
It’s got lame villains and bad design galore
You want loading screens? They’ve got 20
But who cares, no big deal
They’ve got moooooooore

I wanna see
Wanna see Silver fight
I wanna see
Sonic get trapped by a wall
Slamming back into his – what do you call ’em?
Oh – rings!

Touching your controller you don’t get too far
Automated segments are required for moving quickly
Running along down a – what’s that word again?
…Mach speed section!

Up where they crash, up where they fall
Up where they glitch all day with those balls
Loading a screen, for eternity,
In Sonic o’siiiiiiiiix

What would I give, if I could drown in 1 feet waters…
What would I pay to spend a day, stuck on a wall…
Bet’cha in 4, can’t fall through floors
But you can
Stand up on the ceiling
Scripted loops here
Tails is poop here
Ready to gliiiiiiiitch

I’m ready to know what the people know
Ask them some questions and get some missions
What’s an Iblis Trigger, and why does it – what’s the word
Buuuuuuuuuurn

When’s it my turn?
Wouldn’t I love, love to explore the empty hub worlds up above?
Out of this plot
Wish I could rot
In Sonic O’siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiix

Ora ora ora! …rats!

Welp, it’s that spooky time of year again, when kids dress up as monsters and go door to door for free candy, when adults marathon horror movies, when spooky, scary skeletons send shivers down your spine… or when Sonic fans dust off their consoles and ain’t gonna let it get to them; they’re just gonna creep down in Pumpkin Hill in order to find their lost piece!

And that is exactly what we’re sharing with you today, for the fine folks at the Sonic Stadium Message Board have come together this holiday to sing a fabled Halloween carol: A Ghost’s Pumpkin Soup, by Tomoya Ohtani and Hunnid-P!

Freak-Out Friday: Knux Row the Third – A Fistful of Emeralds

With the unveiling of the upcoming CGI-based show Sonic Boom, accompanied by a teaser picture of the cast, many were quick to point out the bulky design of Thrash SoreAss Knuckles the Echidna.

The verdict? Popular opinion said “we love it”! I mean of course, he’s finally rougher than the rest of them, the best of them, tougher than leather – and at long last, we may now see him flex his muscles (because unlike Sonic, he doesn’t chuckle).

So because we all crave Beefy Bara Knuckles and are aching to see the fighting freak in action once more, I’m bringing you some of that today, by way of TripleKyun!

You ready?

Freak-Out Friday: Winter Run – Join with perfect Bob the hedgehog in this endless running game

winterrunbob1

Winter Run – Join with perfect Bob the hedgehog in this endless running game

…I’m not kidding. That’s the actual title.

In a move that surprised absolutely nobody following the god awful monstrosity that was “Jiffy and the Super Hedgehogs” in YOLOLabs’ now nonexistent A Hedgehog Dash (feel free to check out Sonic Retro’s review on that particular Sonic knock-off), yet another faker has emerged on the iOS market – introducing perfect Bob the hedgehog!

But you need not hear me spill out the questionable contents of this completely original game! Here to provide commentary is our special guest from The Sonic Show, my good friend “Let’s Player of the North” Tanner!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIKbr72ZMxg

Thank you Tanner, for your great and noble sacrifice. I will carve your face into a continent in remembrance.

Oh, and get this. There’s actually an in-app purchase in this title, “copyright” to Lambro Solutions. Just one.

Remove Ads.

Pay a dollar to remove the one and only thing that makes up Winter Run.

WELP, let’s break this down real quick, TSS Review style!

YOU’LL LOVE
+ Absolutely nothing!

YOU’LL HATE
– Ads everywhere that you have to pay to remove;
– ‘Solo Bobico’;
– No single player mode, bad news bears for those without internet;
– Collision detection out the wazoo, floors don’t exist;
– “THOSE ARE ‘RINGS’, NOT ‘COINS’, GAH!!”
– No really, literal stacks of ads;
– “Oh my freaking god, how does that thing even LOOK like a hedgehog!?”
– Yourself if you actually used up iPod/iPhone memory space for this (unless you’re Tanner for the sake of this article);
– “THIS IS NOT A ‘GAME'”;
– Did I already mention ads?

I don’t know about any of you, but I’m not willing to “join with perfect Bob” on his winter run anytime soon.

Back to Soleanna for me then!

Freak-Out Friday: ParadoxPowerPlays Syobon Action with ShadowRemix

This particular Freak-Out Friday was a long time coming.

Syobon Action, also known as Cat Mario or Neko Mario, is a notoriously difficult platformer which parodies the original Super Mario Bros from the NES era. It’s cheap in the worst possible manner, it plays dirty, it betrays every convention of the platforming genre…

…and it makes for awesome cases of schadenfreude. One brilliant example right from the community!

Cue the folks at ParadoxPowerPlays, who have decided to tackle this unholy monster! ShadowRemix (from SS:R’s radio affiliate SonicRadio) takes on the many abominations littered throughout the game, as CelestOrion, SSF1991, and Cosmic_Eternity poke fun at his every failure for Rage Night – Syobon Action!

Last year, Jay Egge Mann (of The Sonic Show & Stadium) and Jono.D competed in the ‘Sonic Off’ to see who was the ultimate sonic fan. The reward, a sonic trophy.

Freak-Out Friday: Sonic Lost World’s Parkour Engine

You know what I’m looking forward to the most in Sonic Lost World ? …well, besides the fact that Sonic and Eggman are teaming up?

The parkour-inspired gameplay! Going nuts over massive stages however you please! Running along walls, climbing up to new routes, that sorta thing! Just thinking of the endless possibilities forgive me in clearing a single level gets my mouth watering~!

So, how do you define parkour anyway…?

par·kour [pahr-koor, -kawr, -kohr]
noun
Internet sensation of 2004; art of moving from point A to point B as creatively as possible.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prJdHUs6Qn8

So, technically, Sonic is doing parkour… as long as point A is delusion, and point B is the hospital.

Freak-Out Friday: A Sucky No Choosing Day

Did you ever have the misfortune of watching a single episode of an anime called Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de? The show that retold the Nintendo vs. SEGA console war with a feudal fantasy twist (which, in concept, sounded like a pretty cool idea)? Those of us who did were pretty hyped for it when news first broke; we marked our calendars for the premiere and waited, thinking of what possible wonders would await us in this series…

…and then the first episode came out. Expectations dashed, everyone goes home. Turns out that Aoi Sekai is more “Oppai-Oppai” in quality than “Opa-Opa”, if you catch my drift…

To give you a better idea of this show’s terribadness and to save you the trouble of looking the series up (no, really, you’re welcome), here’s an abridged version of the first episode! Put together by Cyberlink420, the guy behind the Sonic F series, here is the appropriately titled A Sucky No Choosing Day!

Freak-Out Friday: Blankity Blank And All-Stars Blankity Blanking Transformed

Kids, it’s okay to play a game by a company you like… But playing with an unsupported video card on your PC is no good!

To demonstrate, we have a PSA video provided to us by some of the folks at Sonic Paradox, through their ParadoxPowerPlays channel! RGXSuperSonic races as Blanky Rose in the Blanker Blankgoon stage while Dr. Mack Foxx and TheRunningDafini comment aside.

Freak-Out Friday: A Whole Lotta Blast Processing

Get ready for Sonic’s longest adventure yet!

Sonic & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles confirmed for the year 19999999999999999999999994… That’s a whole lotta blast processing right there.

Whoever put this together must have had a great deal of time, patience, and money to have gathered 24 Sonic & Knuckles cartridges to do THAT.

Freak-Out Friday: This is a Sonic Jump Review… by a Hot Girl

Special thanks to the folks at Find the Computer Room for notifying me of this!

So, many of us were admittedly taken by surprise by Sonic Jump. Developed by Hardlight Studios for iOS and Android devices, the quirky little title was announced and released within a short amount of time, and has become one of the most fun Sonic games for mobile devices in recent history (great job, guys!), not to mention it’s gotten a decent amount of positive reviews!

Just like this one!

…wait, what?

…that’s it? …well, it’s more accurate than that other one, but that doesn’t really redeem it – well, not at all! How does this pass for a review?!

P.S.: Why am I getting heavy “reply girl” vibes from this?

Freak-Out… Monday?: Shadow the NumHog

EDIT: Always double-check drafts… Ah well! Guess that’s what happens when you’re too busy preparing for February.

With what appears to be one of the funniest glitches in a Sonic game ever, at least if you choose to ignore the fact Sonic 2006 exists, Hellfire Commentaries plays Shadow the Hedgehog with some rather famishing results.

Freak-Out Friday: Knuckles, You Pervert

And you dare call innocent Tails out for “stooping that low”! Sheesh, I knew you were a knucklehead, but a hypocrite too?

What a jerk!
