The Spin: How SEGA is Ignoring the Middle Children of Sonic’s Legacy

2010 was the year Sonic the Hedgehog came back. Yes, we all heard the stories about how the franchise had declined not long after the jump to 3D, how gaming news outlets and critics even now would begin their pieces with some variation of “Sonic has had a rocky history,” and how every new Sonic game released around the “dark ages” period couldn’t shake off the dreaded “Sonic Cycle.” Continue reading The Spin: How SEGA is Ignoring the Middle Children of Sonic’s Legacy

The Spin: Happy Birthday Sonic the Hedgehog Oh Six

Today marks the tenth anniversary of a videogame. So myself and a few other staff members have stolen an idea from Sonic Retro to give you our mini retrospectives on said electronic digital media product. A game which had such an impact on the games industry that it’s still talked about to this day, except on the Sonic Stadium forums because all discussion on it is banned apart from one topic for reasons we don’t understand. That game, is Sonic the Hedgehog, in Sonic the Hedgehog Episode 2006, you play as Sonic, Shadow and Cannabis Plant Head Guy, who is a magician. Freak-Out Friday: Sonic 06 – The Musical

I just don’t understand why people like Sonic 06

How could a game that gives you so many horrible experiences…

…be good?

Like a Disney film itself, these were the words which began something special over on the SSMB forums. As a debate rages on in our Sonic 06 topic, member Indigo Rush appeared to spin a musical tale of just why he couldn’t understand anybody who would enjoy the game. Then, it escalated further as another member, Discoid, decided he would sing the song… and now, the world has this wonderful creation. Open your ears and listen well. Lyrics are below the video.

Look at this game
Doesn’t it suck?
Wouldn’t you rather be hit by a truck?
What would you think of a game
A game that just
Really stinks

Look at this game
Glitches untold
How many problems can one game disc hold?
Looking around and you think
Sure
This game really stinks

It’s got glitches and plot holes aplenty
It’s got lame villains and bad design galore
You want loading screens? They’ve got 20
But who cares, no big deal
They’ve got moooooooore

I wanna see
Wanna see Silver fight
I wanna see
Sonic get trapped by a wall
Slamming back into his – what do you call ’em?
Oh – rings!

Touching your controller you don’t get too far
Automated segments are required for moving quickly
Running along down a – what’s that word again?
…Mach speed section!

Up where they crash, up where they fall
Up where they glitch all day with those balls
Loading a screen, for eternity,
In Sonic o’siiiiiiiiix

What would I give, if I could drown in 1 feet waters…
What would I pay to spend a day, stuck on a wall…
Bet’cha in 4, can’t fall through floors
But you can
Stand up on the ceiling
Scripted loops here
Tails is poop here
Ready to gliiiiiiiitch

I’m ready to know what the people know
Ask them some questions and get some missions
What’s an Iblis Trigger, and why does it – what’s the word
Buuuuuuuuuurn

When’s it my turn?
Wouldn’t I love, love to explore the empty hub worlds up above?
Out of this plot
Wish I could rot
In Sonic O’siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiix

Friday Five: Worst Sonic games of the past generation

"I wonder how hard it is to get vomit stains off of quills?"
“I wonder how hard it is to get vomit stains off of quills?”

Surprisingly, as hard as it was coming up with five good games from the past generation, it was even harder to come up with five bad ones!….With one exception of course and you all know what that one is and yes, it’s #1. In fact, some of the games on this list are actually fairly enjoyable. So I took off the “No spinoffs” rule this time and had to go with more “disappointing” or “blah” than outright “bad”. This does help show that Sonic’s been more on an upswing since the horrible 2002-2006 era, but it also shows were Sonic has fallen back.

Remember folks, these are just my personal opinions and yours may vary. Also remember that the previous generation is only Wii, 360, PS3, PSP and DS. Enjoy!

The Summer of Sonic 2012 Shorts!

From SoS’12, we managed to bring you the Crush 40 concert, the Club Sonic setlist, NiGHTS’ and Reala’s unveiling in S&ASRT, as well as a contest to win some goodies (just closed!), but there’s one thing we’re missing: the shorts! To those who haven’t had the chance to see them up front and live: no need to fret! As of yesterday, all shorts featured have been uploaded!

A total of three animations were featured in front of a live audience. First up is Shadow the Hedgehog in Brief, followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 in Brief, both parodies handled by Frobman, who previously animated Ring Energy’s Before the Machine and Sonic Heroes in Brief, the latter having been made for Summer of Sonic 2011. Though some would say they’re parodies, some would say both shorts depict each game as is… but that’s for you to decide!

The third and final animation is brought to you by Sonic Paradox! Instead of going with Shorts, the team took a more different route through Sonic Heroes with a music video. With Recorderdude on lyrics, Seaside Denied is split between four animators to handle the four different teams with numerous singers and voice actors, poking fun at every opportunity at both the game itself and the Paradox’s signature Shorts.

Enjoy!

Sonic ’06 Macarena

Hate or love Sonic ’06 you’ll find something humorous in sonic00yea’s video with a Macarena twist to the game’s cutscenes. The part of the song about not worrying about the female singer’s boyfriend playing to a scene of Amy all over Silver when she mistakes him for Sonic is very funny indeed.

Enjoy!

BlueTube: Nothing like a stroll in the Sonic 06

It appears sometimes even Sonic needs to take a break from saving repeatedly kidnapped princesses and skipping through time periods in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Even when the most speediest of blue hedgehogs wishes to slow things down for a little while though, level design can sometimes get in his way when taking a quiet stroll along the beach. Luckily though, the kind people at SEGA were nice enough to include him a constant gravitational pull towards any area of the environment no matter what speed he be going!

Just a bit of fun really. This video made me chuckle and look back on some of the minor technical glitches Sonic encountered in his Next Generation debut back in 2006. I’m sure most of us have gotten over how disappointing this game was, though looking through the frustration there were some relatively funny irregularities included in the game that are always fun to look back on. Let’s hope Sonic’s upcoming adventure on the same platforms don’t end up as technically impaired as this, though.
