Baseball Team Oakland Athletics Pays a Sluggin’ Sonic Tribute

Californian baseball fans were given a super Sonic treat over the weekend, as the regional team Oakand Athletics paid a tribute to SEGA’s mascot while celebrating their players on the Jumbotron during a recent game.

The video above, shared on social media by ‘Dizzydennis‘, features a number of present and past A’s players as they raced around a Green Hill Zone style level collecting baseballs and knocking out evil robot villains. At the very end, former player Eric Chavez appears to ‘win’ the game, while the team’s elephant mascot dances in victory.

It’s a really cool thing for sports fans to see, and just goes to show how mainstream Sonic the Hedgehog still is across all forms of media. Let us know what you think of this tribute in the comments below.

SEGA America President Responds to ‘AEGIS’ Union

SEGA of America president and COO Ian Curran has published an initial reaction to the recent forming of worker’s union ‘Allied Employees Guild Improving SEGA’ in the form of a letter to employees of the entire regional operation.

While a formal corporate response is still forthcoming, Curran’s words in the letter could be interpreted as positive. The exec stated that “Union matters are new to me and SOA and we are investigating and considering the options available to the company” – however, he later made clear that “No SOA employee will be treated any differently whether they support or do not support unionization.”

The letter, published by Axios journalist Stephen Totilo on social media, added: “Some of you may support unionization and some not. That is your legal right… We have a wonderful culture at SOA with a strong commitment to working together as a team. In my mind, it is the SOA employee culture that makes us such a successful company.”

Next steps, as Curran is said to understand it, is for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to conduct a secret ballot of employees – in job positions selected by the NLRB – to determine if unionization will go ahead in a special vote.

Meanwhile, the AEGIS Union has been gaining support on social media from fellow union organisations and regional political figures. More on this story as it happens.

F4F Metal Sonic Statue Limited to USA & Canada, Now Available to Pre-Order

First 4 Figures has announced that pre-orders are now open for its new Metal Sonic statue, which comes in both standard and exclusive models at 3kg in weight. The exclusive Metal Sonic statue lights up and costs $174.99, but like its Super Sonic counterpart it is very limited at just 350 of them produced. The standard Metal Sonic without light up features costs $20 less at $154.99 and isn’t as limited at 1,500 produced. Both statues will be available Q2 2011.

There has been a snag with this announcement though, because the statue is only available to USA & Canada residents right now. First 4 Figures has explained on their Facebook page that this is because their European license with SEGA has expired and talks to renew it before Christmas didn’t achieve anything. The company said they will be meeting with SEGA in January in hopes to renew their European licence and said they will keep everyone posted. If you live outside of the USA and Canada and have placed a pre-order, F4F say that you can hold on to your pre-order for now, because they don’t charge until the product is ready to ship.

Here are quotes from their Facebook page for reference:

@Europe – Our EU license has run out but we are trying to get an extension for the resins. We will update when we hear something in early Jan.

We will be giving out an update for non US residents in early Jan – we hope Sega will grant us an extension. We will keep you all posted.

@Non USA/Canadians – Keep you orders – we dont charge in any case until the product is ready to ship and please keep a look out our FB/Website for more info after our meeting with Sega.

We were hoping for an update prior to the holidays but didn’t get it in time.

As part of the update, First 4 Figures released fourteen photos of the exclusive Metal Sonic Statue and eight photos of the standard one. Check them out below.
