Formally known as Lee Brotherton, former Remix Factory member Bentley Jones catches up with Sonic City for an exclusive interview discussing Sonic, his new album and previous works.

Bentley seems to have greatly enjoyed working on previous Sonic titles and would do it again in the future if he had the chance, also adding he would enjoy working on other game projects too broadening his horizons.
Bentley Jones composed Silvers theme ‘Dreams of an Absolution’ which can be heard in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ for both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 platforms.

For those of you who have spent several years frustrated because you just can’t get updates on what the band Crush 40 are doing, rejoice! Crush 40 are the definitive Sonic Soundtrack band, who blasted their way into the Sonic Universe with incredible riffs and powerful vocals way back in the day on Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast.
The front men of the band, Johnny Gioeli (Vocals, most of the time!) and Jun Senoue (Guitarist extraodinare) have finally put together a Myspace page, on which you can go and listen to a selection of their tracks, look at pictures of the band, and even leave a message for them should you be signed up yourself! The Sega Homebrew community are currently working on a new Mega Drive and Mega CD game called Pier Solar and plan to release it on cartridge for Mega Drive and of course CD for Mega CD. The game is not licensed, produced or endorsed by Sega so I don’t know how they plan on mass producing it on cartridge and CD to the public.
Anyway, the game is an anime stype RPG and look’s quite good from the screenshots and trailer. The guys have even made an official website for the game.
The game is set for a Fall 2008 release.
In other news Sega have re-released Boarder Down on to their Dreamcast console, the game looks to be produced on the Dreamcasts GD-Rom disks. The game is released today at 7,140 yen.
Stay tuned to Sonic News for further developments!

Sonic News – and as well, Sonic Stadium – is looking for a few passionate and dedicated writers to add to our team!
Applicants must be aware that they will be obligated to update our website with screenshots, videos, and information regarding new games as it is released – alternatively, Sonic News writers will be obligated to write articles regarding activity of SEGA as a company.
Think you’ve got what it takes? We’d like for applicants to be well versed in English, and have a track record for following SEGA in general, not just Sonic – good post history on the SSMB is a bonus, but it’s not required to apply. Applicants must, however, but a current member on our website and can not be banned from any of our sub-sites. Continue reading TSS is looking for dedicated, talented staff!

If you’ve been paying attention to Sonic News at all, you’ll have noticed this article that we posted not too long ago. It said that a Sonic X-Treme prototype would be released on July 18th, available for anyone to take a look at.
Well, as it turns out, someone attempted to leak it early, and this prompted ASSEMbler to make a formal release earlier on. So, today, July 16th, 2007, the developmental Sonic X-Treme release has finally been shown the light of day!
Download is available by bittorrent here, and a rapidshare mirror has been made of it here.
A big thanks to ASSEMbler for making this public! Enjoy and all that. It isn’t much, admittedly, but come on – what would your friends say if you told them you played an unreleased game? You’d be the top bloke in your group of mates. Or something.
Here’s the download links again, just in case you’re lazy (like me):

Rumors have been spreading, both private and in public, about a public release of a test engine of the lost Sonic game, Sonic X-Treme, which was originally planned to debut as “the” Sonic game on the Sega Saturn, which was later scrapped and replaced with the far-inferior Sonic 3D Blast, which, even though it had a nice soundtrack, was mediocre compared to what X-Treme had offered.
According to various forum posts on both Sonic CulT and the Sonic 2 Beta page, local scener HXC, Sonic X-Treme research extraordinare, ASSEMbler, of ASSEMblergames.com has obtained a copy of a Sonic X-Treme test build, which was up for auction a couple of years beforehand, and was auctioned off to a collector, who had the game for an extended period of time. Now, rumors have spread that this developmental build of Sonic X-Treme will be released to the public on July 18th, free for anyone to download and research. We tend not to get awards or credit for much these days so it’d be nice. 🙂
In other news, SEGASonic Radio had a rip-roaring success with the Sonic Super 16th Event, just about the only celebration of Sonic’s Anniversary which earned 70+ listeners and the appearance of Lee Brotherton (Remix Factory) in the Chatroom.

We don’t normally cover stuff like this (hacking discoveries and whatnot), but we felt this was interesting enough to warrant a news story.
If you’ve ever been to Sonic CulT, S2Beta, or the like, you’d know that they tend to specialize in ROM hacking, and reverse engineering of Sonic games. Local guru, Link, decided to take that a step further, and delve into Sonic the Hedgehog, for Xbox 360.
What he found was certainly interesting.
In addition to many nifty tweaks, such as tweaking Tails’ gameplay to not suck, he made a single key discovery; one the likes of which hadn’t been seen in a Sonic game for years beforehand. Continue reading Sonic 06 Unearthed

Sonique of Fans United for SatAM has spoken to Sonic News about the recent story of a possible Sonic movie in the works, stating that Richard Kuta’s chances of actually getting the project off the ground is slim.
“Richard Kuta is NOT a film maker. What films has he made? None. Nada, zero zip, zilch. He’s just a guy who’s been banned from almost every Sonic forum ever made who has a dream. That’s it.” Sonique said in an email. “He’s never even written anything above fanfiction.”
Interesting evidence and searching reveals no information on the animation company ‘Soloakai’ either. Sonique states that findings point to the group being makers of flash animations rather than a professional major movie production team. Our research only found the name ‘Soloakai’ on our own news reports. Continue reading Sonic Movie a Hoax? [UPDATE]

The Sonic Site Awards results were announced Sunday in its annual radio broadcast.
For the first time in its history, the radio show, broadcasted simultaneously on Sega Sonic Radio and Sega Games Radio, went smoothly without any problems, and the reduced number of awards meant a show which ballooned in length in recent years was comfortably under three hours this year.
After a disappointing voting turnout in 2005, SSA’s decision to require user registration is starting to bear fruit. Despite having nine less awards and half the time to vote, voting was higher than last year, at over 4,000 votes from over 600 people, many of whom used their accounts registered for last year’s SSA. The Sonic Site Awards‘ “Phase 2” voting phase opened Sunday night, and will close on Friday 15th December.
The Sonic Stadium’s awards ceremony, now in its fifth year, has been shortened substantially to end before Christmas, due to a busy second half of the year for the site and its staff, and the voting phase is set to last for only two weeks, resulting in lower turnout from voters than previous years.
With this in mind, the Stadium encourages anyone reading this story to tell other Sonic fans about the Awards, get others to vote for the sites and fans they think deserve awards most, and to vote themselves if they haven’t already! Voting is quick and easy through the SSA home page, and you only need a Sonic Stadium Account which is absolutely free and only takes a minute to register for. Even if you’re banned from the SSMB your account will still be able to vote.
The results of the vote will be announced during an SSA Sega Sonic Radio broadcast on Sunday 17th December. The show has had well over 60 listeners in the past, and this year is not expected to be any different.

SEGA Europe has kicked off the hype for all things Sonic related as it officially opens its Community Blog. Titled the ‘Sonic City Blognik’, it features members of SEGA Europe’s marketing and community management team discussing various interesting facets of the blue blur.
Initial blog entries included posts from Community Manager Rom and Svend Joscelyne, webmaster of The Sonic Stadium. Shortly after a mention on its e-newsletter, posts from the marketing department shared an exclusive insight into the upcoming TV and print advertisements for Sonic the Hedgehog on XBOX 360.
The inclusion of respected members of the Sonic the Hedgehog community is part of an attempt initialised by SEGA and The Sonic Stadium to bring the official source closer to the fans. TSS webmaster Svend will be writing regular columns for the blog, while a few other community members have already been offered the opportunity to write a piece for the online diary.

- It is ok to resend your e-mail ONLY if you get a message saying it didn’t go through or that the inbox was full.

The Sonic Stadium launched its award ceremony, the Sonic Site Awards, on Thursday, with the nominations phase.
Delayed by the Summer of Sonic event which took place during SSA’s usual dates, the time frame for the Site Awards has been shortened to allow it to end before New Year. Nominations will last two weeks instead of the normal month, for a series of awards cut-down because of the amount of redundant categories in 2005.
Anyone can nominate a site at the SSA official site, so feel free to nominate any site you think deserves an award. To vote for a shortlisted site during Phase 2 later this month, you will require a Sonic Stadium account. To register free you need a valid email address. This requirement was introduced last year to combat mass repeat-voting after voting started using an automated system.
Nominations close on 17th November 2006.

You want to leave your mark on Sonic history, folks? Now’s your chance. Brian Ward from Shout! Factory has just announced a fan art contest for the Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series DVD boxset.
This fan art must meet the following requirements:
- Entries should represent SatAm Sonic. They can be any kind of art, having anything to do with SatAm, as long as it’s appropriate. Any kind of art is excepted and has a chance of being featured.
- Should be scanned in 300 DPI.
- Should be sent by November 4th (Brian apologizes for the delay, it took longer then expected for him to get the approval from Sega and DiC).
All entries should be submitted to SonicFanArt@hotmail.com . They will be judged by Shout! Factory’s own art director, Emily Johnson. The winning entries will contribute to the packaging of the DVD box set, and featured within the thinpaks of the discs themselves. Continue reading Art contest for upcoming SatAm box set announced

An online flash cartoon, called ‘Press Start: Bonus Levels’, features David Humphrey in the latest episode. Humphrey’s name will instantly ring bells with Shadow fanatics as the original voice actor for the character from Sonic Adventure 2 to Sonic Heroes.
Press Start is a website featuring productions based on video game spoofs. A self-titled feature-length movie is planned, but ‘Bonus Levels’ is a spoof cartoon show that is updated every month. Previous episodes have referenced Pacman, Castlevania, Tomb Raider and Pitfall.
David Humphrey’s voice talent was not used to play the black hedgehog, but to play the part of the series’ resident vampire lord Vlad – a character previously voiced by Mortal Kombat’s John Turk. Turk’s unavailability for the new episode and the opening of Humphrey’s schedule allowed the original Shadow to take part. Continue reading David Humphrey Voices Fan Animation

Fresh off the press, news has come about that Sonic CulT has won an auction for the script to the 32x predecessor to Sonic X-Treme, Sonic Mars!
The script was being auctioned on eBay, and sold in the end for a total of $510, after many bid-sniping attempts from other bidders trying to obtain the item.
The auction has only ended a few hours ago, so the script is not in the hands of Sonic CulT just yet. Various scans of the script on the auction page reveal that it is indeed legitimate, and that it contains a loads of information on Sonic Mars, including the plot, various concept sketches, level concepts, among other things. After sending an email to SEGA Europe, with a generic 6 question list, =TSS= founder Svend Joscelyne (AKA Dreadknux) recieved a response – but what he wasn’t expecting was who replied to it — Masahiro Kumono and Shun Nakamura; project leaders for the upcoming game “Sonic the Hedgehog,” scheduled for release on the PS3 and X-Box 360 later this year.
The two Sega representatives revealed exclusively to TSS details about the new Sonic game, one in particular being that Amy Rose — Sonic’s self proclaimed fiance (the nerve, eh? =P) — will indeed have an appearance, stifling all the rumors of a supposed love interest between Sonic and the new “Princess Elise” character, who will have a vital role in the plot of the new Sonic title. The Summer of Sonic website, a massive official fan-project led by The Sonic Stadium, has gained information that seems to confirm that Amy Rose is set to make an appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3 and XBOX 360.
In responding to a small set of Q&A questions exclusively for the Summer of Sonic website, arranged by SEGA Europe and TSS, producer Masahiro Kumono (also the new Head of Sonic Team since Yuji Naka’s departure) and director Shun Nakamura briefly stated their feelings for the Sonic franchise and where they see it heading after 15 years of popularity.
When asked what Sonic character was their favourite, Kumono-san stated that Amy was a preference, saying that “I like Amy, who appears as an amigo [friend/support] character in this title [Sonic 2006]. She has that same active personality, which build up the story as well as the game.” Continue reading Sonic 2006: Amy A Possibility

The second Sonic Wrecks Awards has now ended, and the results have been revealed.
Websites who retained awards won last year include Sonic Vegemite, who held onto the ‘Best Humour Related Site’ and SEGA for ‘Most Original Concept’ in Sonic Wild Fire – the reason of its win being the majority of the fanbase’s feelings that the Wii title will truly be the next step in the Sonic franchise, in the face of the ‘same old’ from Sonic Next-Gen.
The Sonic Stadium featured heavily in the awards again this year, with Sonic News obtaining the ‘Most Essential Service’ gong a second year running and taking the baton of ‘Best Resource’ from it’s parent website. TSS maintained its award for ‘Best Overall Website’, and also won the humourous ‘Big Boot Award’, due to a lack of updates. The reason for the lack of updates has been reported to be a focus on a new website system for the website, including many new features. The new system is reported to be launched in August.
SEGA’s antics with Next-Gen have done no favours for themselves, with Silver the Hedgehog winning the ‘Biggest Disappointment’ Award, and the new hedgehog also obtaining the ‘Biggest OMFG Moment’ alongside the newly designed, slimmer Dr. Eggman.

While plans for Sonic’s 15th Anniversary all seems to be on the quiet side officially, on the Internet blue blur fans from all over the world are preparing to celebrate in their own special way.
The Sonic Stadium revealed some weeks ago to a surprised public that it will be leading one of the biggest fan collaborations in the history of the community, by launching a mini-site that will feature contributions from as many different Sonic fansites and fan creators as possible. Titled ‘The Summer of Sonic’, it aims to be a neutral ground for all fan creators and webmasters to get equal recognition for their hard work, while simultaneously promoting the exciting June 23rd birthday.
The website, once officially launched, will feature written articles on various aspects of Sonic history, a large gallery for all types of fan creation, a guestbook-style birthday card for visitors to sign, along with competitions for sending in photos and video footage celebrating Sonic’s 15th in unique ways. Hurrah I hear you scream, the Sonic X-Treme compendium’s first instalment has been released.
Eversince Chris Senn began spilling the beans on the Sonic X-Treme project on his forums (in mid November) he’s been promising the world in the form of the SXC, and for a while it seemed like that might never have happed. A Sonic the Comic fan community has recently called to question the honesty of an online trader, offering back issues of the Fleetway publication for various sums of money.
The Sonic the Comic Archive forum was approached on March 2nd by Pete Wilcock, owner of the Comical Games store. While his offer appeared otherwise genuine, an issue over front cover images led to a community-wide inquiry to Wilcock’s honesty.
The images used on the website were in fact scans from the Sonic the Comic Archive (StCA). ‘Hogfather’, co-webmaster of the website, expressed his initial concern: “I was at first impressed, he had all the cover scans of every issue… I had thought he was a long time subscriber to the comic, but then I discarded that when I noticed that he had issues that were “out of stock”… The images of the comics he had on his site were in fact my comics that I own. I could tell this because of the damage on the covers where the free gifts had been removed.” Continue reading Sonic Comic Seller Challenged

Sonic X-Treme Remix site
As most will be aware there has been an X-Treme movement on Christian Senns message board. The former Sonic X-Treme art director (amongst other things) had taken time out of his busy schedule to release information and conceptual art (on the failed project) to the public. Senns release was greeted by a mouth watering fandom, but ultimately the resurrection of X-Treme lie not with Senn, but rather a Frenchman named Dobermann.
Many skilled programmers have attempted to recreate what X-Treme could have been like using 3D visuals, but it was Dobermann (a member on Senns forum) and his decision to develop his game in 2D that has yielded such positive results. Continue reading Sonic X-Treme Remix

A recent discovery, made by ‘Sonic Cult’ member HXC has revealed some interesting and new ‘Sonic X-treme’ information.
Among the discoveries that were bought to light when HXC contacted the games former director Chris Senn were: conceptual art of Tiara Boobowski (which could be classed as a very elaborate spite, much in the guise of the Sonic sprites from the cut scenes in Sonic Advance 2), a small GIF demo of Tiara in action And finally a 3D rendered demo of the game that was apparently coded on an Amiga 4000 and used to pitch the concept to SEGA’s board of directors, much like the Jade Gully 32X demo would have been. Three vote ties, including the main award itself, highlighted an enjoyable Sonic Site Awards ceremony, kicking off the Sonic Stadium’s 5th birthday celebrations.
However, the broadcast looked in danger of not even starting, when the expected influx of listeners was even more than anyone expected. Despite Zone Radio Network admin Andy Nolan increasing SEGASonic Radio‘s listener limit to 50, and setting up a relay for around 35 listeners, both servers were filled long before the cast even started.
Additionally, hosts Dreadknux and Roareye had major problems getting their broadcasting software to work, and then had even worse problems starting the show. Eventually, after kicking all 50 listeners from the ZRN server, they were able to start broadcasting over two hours late, at 8:20 PM GMT. Additional relay servers from tSS staff B’man and Fastfeet helped to let everyone hear the show, meaning that the problems that plagued past shows were no longer an issue. Phase 2 of the Sonic Stadium’s Sonic Site Awards ended early Saturday, amid a mixed reception to voting procedures.
The annual awards ceremony, created in 2001, has become the most well-known Sonic fan awards programme, due in part to the fact that anyone can get their site noticed if it’s good enough. It hasn’t been without its share of controversy though – fixing allegations abounded in 2003, and 2004’s new automated system caused dismay amongst voters in having to vote for almost every award at once.
2005’s Awards aimed to be more flexible for voters. Phase 1’s nominations were automated and made publically available for the first time, to make sites that didn’t quite make it, there to see. A more organised voting system meant that voters only needed to vote for all the awards in a category of 3 to 5; and they could change their vote at any time.
