20 Years of TSS: Twelve Ways We Were More Than Just a Website

It’s true that for the last two decades, we’ve been on top of the latest and greatest Sonic the Hedgehog news. But I wanted The Sonic Stadium to be more than just an information resource. My goal has been to create meaningful contributions to expand and enrich the online Sonic community. Which is why you might remember Sonic Stadium just as much for its list of wacky projects as you might for news and opinion.

The Sonic Site Award 2009 Winners

The results are in for the Sonic Site Awards 2009! You can listen to The Sonic Hour special broadcast that announced the winners live last night by going straight to our Media portal, or by subscribing to TSH’s podcast feed). For a full rundown of nominee placement, head to the Sonic Site Awards page, where you can see total votes and percentage votes for all the runners.

But for the sake of brevity, here are this year’s winners:

A big win for the Brazilian Sonic community this year – a side of the online fanbase that is just finding its feet and experiencing a boom not unlike the British and American one of several years ago. The level of excitement and energy between these websites is quite inspiring and reminds me of when I first joined the Sonic community way back in ’99. There are some truly deserving websites here, and I hope you’ll join me in congratulating them and visiting their sites on a regular basis.

Sonic Site Awards Phase II Is Go!

About time, I hear you moan. Alright alright, shut up, I’ve had a busy week of it. 😛 Anyway, as you can probably tell by the title of this update, the second phase of this year’s Sonic Site Awards is now OPEN! Click here to be taken straight to the voting page. We had a hell of a lot of submissions this year, so thank you for all of your interest – unfortunately only five nominees can be considered worthy of the title for each category, so apologies if you didn’t get through – it just means you have everything to work for in next year’s contest!

You have until the end of play 6th December 2009 to cast your vote. Can I be a bit of a penis and politely ask everyone to at least visit all of the nominations for each category? These guys have put their back into making their websites and this event is all about awarding great work that might not get seen for all the TSS’ and Sonic Retro’s out there. Take the time to click the links, surf about, see what each site’s like, and contact the webmasters and let ’em know your thoughts if you like. This community is all about sharing, and if we can’t share just a moment of our time what’s the point of it all?

The winners, in traditional SSA fashion, won’t be revealed until a special Awards broadcast that takes place on SEGASonic Radio. That means you won’t even know who’s winning at the moment until the big day. It’s all a mystery! Suspense! Drama (the good kind)! Intrigue! It’s fun, isn’t it?

Good luck to our nominees!

Sonic Site Awards ’06 Results

The Sonic Site Awards results were announced Sunday in its annual radio broadcast.

For the first time in its history, the radio show, broadcasted simultaneously on Sega Sonic Radio and Sega Games Radio, went smoothly without any problems, and the reduced number of awards meant a show which ballooned in length in recent years was comfortably under three hours this year.

After a disappointing voting turnout in 2005, SSA’s decision to require user registration is starting to bear fruit. Despite having nine less awards and half the time to vote, voting was higher than last year, at over 4,000 votes from over 600 people, many of whom used their accounts registered for last year’s SSA. Sonic Site Awards Voting Closing Shortly

The Sonic Site Awards“Phase 2” voting phase opened Sunday night, and will close on Friday 15th December.

The Sonic Stadium’s awards ceremony, now in its fifth year, has been shortened substantially to end before Christmas, due to a busy second half of the year for the site and its staff, and the voting phase is set to last for only two weeks, resulting in lower turnout from voters than previous years.

With this in mind, the Stadium encourages anyone reading this story to tell other Sonic fans about the Awards, get others to vote for the sites and fans they think deserve awards most, and to vote themselves if they haven’t already! Voting is quick and easy through the SSA home page, and you only need a Sonic Stadium Account which is absolutely free and only takes a minute to register for. Even if you’re banned from the SSMB your account will still be able to vote.

The results of the vote will be announced during an SSA Sega Sonic Radio broadcast on Sunday 17th December. The show has had well over 60 listeners in the past, and this year is not expected to be any different.

Sonic Site Awards Launches

The Sonic Stadium launched its award ceremony, the Sonic Site Awards, on Thursday, with the nominations phase.

Delayed by the Summer of Sonic event which took place during SSA’s usual dates, the time frame for the Site Awards has been shortened to allow it to end before New Year. Nominations will last two weeks instead of the normal month, for a series of awards cut-down because of the amount of redundant categories in 2005.

Anyone can nominate a site at the SSA official site, so feel free to nominate any site you think deserves an award. To vote for a shortlisted site during Phase 2 later this month, you will require a Sonic Stadium account. To register free you need a valid email address. This requirement was introduced last year to combat mass repeat-voting after voting started using an automated system.

Nominations close on 17th November 2006.

Sonic Site Awards Final Results

Three vote ties, including the main award itself, highlighted an enjoyable Sonic Site Awards ceremony, kicking off the Sonic Stadium’s 5th birthday celebrations.

However, the broadcast looked in danger of not even starting, when the expected influx of listeners was even more than anyone expected. Despite Zone Radio Network admin Andy Nolan increasing SEGASonic Radio‘s listener limit to 50, and setting up a relay for around 35 listeners, both servers were filled long before the cast even started.

Additionally, hosts Dreadknux and Roareye had major problems getting their broadcasting software to work, and then had even worse problems starting the show. Eventually, after kicking all 50 listeners from the ZRN server, they were able to start broadcasting over two hours late, at 8:20 PM GMT. Additional relay servers from tSS staff B’man and Fastfeet helped to let everyone hear the show, meaning that the problems that plagued past shows were no longer an issue. Sonic Site Awards Voting Ends

Phase 2 of the Sonic Stadium’s Sonic Site Awards ended early Saturday, amid a mixed reception to voting procedures.

The annual awards ceremony, created in 2001, has become the most well-known Sonic fan awards programme, due in part to the fact that anyone can get their site noticed if it’s good enough. It hasn’t been without its share of controversy though – fixing allegations abounded in 2003, and 2004’s new automated system caused dismay amongst voters in having to vote for almost every award at once.

2005’s Awards aimed to be more flexible for voters. Phase 1’s nominations were automated and made publically available for the first time, to make sites that didn’t quite make it, there to see. A more organised voting system meant that voters only needed to vote for all the awards in a category of 3 to 5; and they could change their vote at any time. Sonic Site Awards Phase 2 Opens

The Sonic Stadium’s Sonic Site Awards opened for voting by the public Friday, after two weeks of delays.

Organizers planned to open the voting phase, dubbed “Phase 2”, around or before the start of September, but head administrator Dreadknux’s holiday clashed with this plan. A problem with naming the “MIDI Composition” award badly also meant that only one nomination was made, and so the judges selected four prominent 2005 sequencers at the last minute to join last year’s winner EspioKaos.

Anyone can vote in the SSA at the voting section of the site, assuming they have registered a Sonic Stadium account. This policy was designed to avoid repeat voting amongst unscrupulous voters. Voting ends on October 21st.

The Sonic Site Awards 2005 Launches

The Sonic Stadium’s annual awards ceremony, The Sonic Site Awards, has launched its website, with a brand new design and some promised new features. Official starting of the event will happen this Friday (15th July).

The event, which has grown to be one of the biggest attractions of the online Sonic world, will this year have its awards divided into categories. These categories neatly seperate the awards up so they are easier to take in, while providing more specialised ones. In association with Sonic Fan Games HQ and The Sonic Stadium’s close affiliation with the SAGE event, there is a “SFGHQ Category” that focuses on fangame commendation, for example. TSS’ 4th Birthday!

This is how the celebrations will work out. Sunday 24th October 2004, at 5:00pm GMT (UK Time), the celebrations will all kick off at the SONIC SITE AWARDS 2004, for the final announcement of the winners! Who has won the Sonic Site of ’04? And who is the best Elite Sonic Site? Roareye and myself will host the show, which will also kick off a new series and season of programming for SEGASonic Radio, our radio station. SSR will merge stations so that Live and Streamed will combine. All you can want, in one station.

The new series of popular show “The Sonic Hour” will debut when the SSA Ceremony begins. Fastfeet Media will return, which includes the return of the TSS FTP Service (after some considerable downtime), and a new BitTorrent system will be placed in the FFM halls. The Sonic Site Awards

Just a quick note to say, that The Sonic Site Awards is now officially open! Do not bother to submit larger, established sites like Sonic HQ, Shadow of a Hedgehog or even TSS itself into the SSA this year – all very popular sites will be denied entry into the Sonic Site Awards and will instead enter a single poll seperate from the main event called the Sonic Elite Awards. Check out the page on the SSA mini-site for more details on these events. Also, I added another Top 50-mahoobitz button, whatever the hell they’re called. Yay for pointless updates-ism!

Happy Birthday Sonic!

What, you thought I’d miss Sonic’s 13th Birthday? For shame! 😛 I’ve managed to make a special article to commemorate the Sonic anniversary, “Let’s have a Happy Birthday“. Because we all should. My birthday is on the 30th too, on a completely unrelated note!!! 😀

Also, the Sonic Site Awards website is fully up and running, although voting will not officially start until Monday. Check out the noiceness! Finally, as I speak I’m just about to hop into a special SEGASonic Radio LiVECAST gathering with all the SSR:LiVECAST DJ’s for Sonic’s 13th! Join us if you will, we’re all at the TSS Chat Room. Have a good one!

Chaos Con Event Starts, and bleh.

Sonic’s birthday is nigh on a few days away, and what do we have planned? … Erm, maybe not a whole lot. 😉 We could just surprise you though. Bear in mind I’m trying to open The Sonic Site Awards 2004 by the 23rd, so if we can do that, then that’d be good enough, eh? ^_^; Another event has spawned in the community, called Chaos Con, and is a showcase of all manners of fan works. We start covering it today, so check out the link and read our coverage so far. Then check out the site itself. We’d have begun when the event actually opened yesterday, but alas certain circumstances meant it was delayed until today. But still. 🙂

Also of note, I’ve added two more new fan articles to the Articles section. One by Cake, and one by Sonicoman. Read ’em and… weep. Possibly. Also bear in mind that Sonic Advance 3 is already out in the UK! That’s right, it was released early, so get it in! I’d also like to point out that I’m preparing a reshuffle of the Games Reviews, what with older reviews not being ‘Sonically correct’, so to speak. That is all, enjoy!

A Proper Update, and the SSA 2004!

I have a loooot of stuff submitted and that needs to be added, so I’m spending this week to get it all online and sorted so the site is back up to date 🙂 To start with, I went through the ENTIRE list of Sonic Links for dead links. I would have named them all here to commisserate the dead sites involved, but there turned out to be 139 dead links! 139! Added a few links too, and will be adding more throughout the week too. Assuming they’re not dead. The links, that is.

The reason most people have not been able to get onto the FTP Service is because the details changed – again – and TSS’s page was no longer up-to-date. Apologies, and you can now use the details on the updated page to successfully enter. Interviews have been added: two old interviews withShayne Thames and WB, and a recent interview of myself by Miles Attacca. The Movies section of the downloads zone is under renovation, so it’ll be finished and ‘n00’ during the week. That, and new sections on the Sonic E3 DS Demo and Sonic 3 Fighter Sonic [A new pirate game.. sigh] are up in the Games Archive.

Finally, today is the first day of the warm-up to… The Sonic Site Awards 2004! The SSA is changing for this year’s event, and you can now find out the first details… HERE.

My Birthday has passed, and I am extremely happy. Not only does the Linkin Park album rock to hell (well, I kinda knew that anyway) but I also bagged myself a Game Boy Advance. I’ve yet to play any GBA games for it though – I could only afford a trade in, but I still got some of my GBC games. Just gotta get a GBA game next week then. Sigh.
