Sound Test Saturday Archives: Summer of Sound 2012

Kick up your feet, pour out a glass of your finest wine (or grape juice), light up the fireplace, and put on your finest bathrobe and fez! It’s time to revisit your favourite tunes of the past summer as we tune in to the Archives!

Today, we look back onto previous artists and remixes featured over the previous season! Fall is upon us now, but let us bid our final farewell to the toasty weather and sunny skies of the summer.

August and September are viewable after the jump!

July

The Sound Check w/Freen in Green: The first of Sound Test Saturdays on SEGASonic: Radio, this occasion was celebrated with the introduction of The Sound Check, a subfeature of STS which highlights remixers rather than remixes! Who better to have on Round 1 than a group with an impressive playlist on both the Sonic and original side? From the Great White North, the crazy band known as Freen in Green!

Sonic World Runner: A set of five original tracks, and damn fine ones too! Put together for an up and coming fan game in the making, we look into some of the music Sonic World Runner will have to offer! Names such as Plumegeist, Freen in Green, TheSymphonicGames, and DJ MAX-E have contributed some fantastic sounds! Get a sneak peek at the music of the Cascade Grove, Floral Springs, Transit Metropolis, Bumper Boulevard, and Alpine Eruption Zones!

The Sound Check w/xTrickyWolfy: Trekking on to Round 2, I’m joined by the lovely lady Shelbi for the Sound Check! A recurring remixer on the front page, and for good reason! You never know what kind of track she’ll pull out of her metaphorical hat next! On the side, TrickyWolfy is also the one behind rather… interesting… tributes to Sonic Heroes

The X Makes it Sound Cool: There are two things Sonic fans can associate to the letter “X”: the Sonic X anime and the could’ve-been Sonic X-treme. A trio of exceptional tunes have been chosen for your excellent-taste-in-music tastebuds! First up was a collab between Shelbi and sonicsneakers/Jesse, remaking a recurring theme in Sonic X called Sonic’s Fight; DJ Andy G pays tribute to the infamous Space Queens track synonymous to the cancelled Saturn title; Edobean sings the Shining Road ending from Sonic X with such beautiful vocals!

August

The Sound Check w/Ring Energy: As unexpected and crazy like a kick in the nuts, I’m joined by the superpsycho and musicman Psyguy, the surprising and sweet singer SerenaMidori, and the snap, crikey, Aussie lyricist CrikeyDave in this wacky edition of the Sound Check! Logic? We don’t have any! Maturity? You won’t find it here! It’s Ring Energy!

The Sound Check w/Falk: Coinciding with the happening that is SAGE’12, one of the musicians behind Sonic Before the Sequel’12 takes centre stage! With the kind of music he makes, why doesn’t this guy work for SEGA already!? All eyes and ears on the one and only Falkness monster, Falk!

Audial Assault Zone: Original Sonic-inspired tunes! Introducing letterONE’s FAST BLUE HEDGEHOG, followed by double trouble from Slide20xl with Depth City and Amazing Highway, this Sound Test doesn’t know when to quit! And then it pulls an Aerial Ambush Act 1 for an upcoming Sonic OVA fan game, all by LtheHedgehog? Slow down there!

Sonic Paradox Remix Shorts: A different kind of Shorts Volume from the Sonic Paradox community, and the first of many to come! Led by Jesse Proper, this album is packed with glorious music from some of the best artists the Paradox has to offer! Race to Win by Jesse and Mardic? Chocolate Chipped Cream Sundae Supreme by Rexy? Bang it Out by EAR? Tonite at Club Labyrinth by Recorderdude? Download this 24 track odyssey of sound you won’t hear anywhere else! If you haven’t already, you should feel ashamed! Redeem yourself by downloading the album now!

September

Chills, Spills, and Thrills: Exposure to this Sound Test may lead to exactly as it says on the tin! Funkflash, last seen on Sound Test Saturday’s premiere, contributes some of the finest percussion to Planet Wisp; Joshua Taipale and General Offensive! showcases the fruit of their teamwork for a beautiful remix to Lost Labyrinth Act 3. If these haven’t gotten your mouths watering, then may I direct you to HeroBoy1092′s Modern Hydrocity worthy of Generations? How about some Golden Rings on the side by Shadowlink4321, with a music video by Tigura21 to accompany it?

The Sound Check w/Dr. Mack Foxx: If you’ve heard a piano/MIDI cover of a Sonic tune somewhere on the web, chances are high that it has Mack and EspioKaos’ names on it. One of the Sonic Paradox community, I chat with one who has been working with Kaos for years: the wise Doctor of the electronic ebony and ivory himself, Dr. Mack Foxx!

Heroic Hedgehogs: Oh man! These tunes are so smooth I can’t take it! MisterMacanulty wows with a medley of the four Sonic Heroes team themes with Heroic Hedgehogs! Next up, Dill Tasker gives Sky Fortress Act 2 a D&B makeover! And if those two aren’t enough, 331Erock comes forward with a way past cool metal tribute to his childhood through Sonic Meets Metal! Do these tracks get you sliding out of your chair?

Aching to travel back further through time? Then here are the Archives for Spring 2012!

See you all next week, everyone! Stay tuned for the upcoming interview with Hideki Naganuma, as well as the next Sound Check with Rocket Ship Resort! Keep sending in any and all music you find or made for future Sound Tests at vizardjeffhog@sonicstadium.org!

Richard Jacques Does Sega Remixes for SAASRT. Check Out Some Soundtrack Samples!

Jet Set Radio Sample (From Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed) by Destructoid

Richard Jacques is back with Sega again and remixing some of their classic game music with a modern twist. Now, it’s not just the vehicles that transform, it’s the music! In a new preview from Destructoid, Steve Lycett showed off some soundtrack samples from the upcoming game and it’s looking pretty dang sweet.

Richard Jacques had this to say.

You are not going to believe some of the music we’ve managed to get into the game and I am sure the fans will agree this is without doubt, the best soundtrack we’ve included in an All-Stars game to date!

Sega, PLEASE put this on iTunes! Don’t make me beg.

Check out two more tracks in the comment section.

Soundtrack Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 & 2 Original Soundtrack

A large proportion of the Sonic fanbase were disappointed by Sonic the Hedgehog 4. In many aspects the game had mammoth boots to fill, in continuing the lineage responsible for creating the massive following Sonic commanded during the nineties. While it’s not the intention to review either game here, many parallels can be drawn in the expectations of the music as to what was expected from the games themselves.

Steve Lycett Reiterates: S&ASRT Wii U Framerate is Fine

Ever since it was revealed behind closed doors at GC, the Wii U version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has received criticism from numerous sources for its poor frame rate and graphical issues. If Steve Lycett’s comments on Sonic Talk a week ago weren’t enough to allay your concerns, and going by some of the comments I’ve been reading around the internet it clearly hasn’t, here he is again addressing the graphical concerns on the SEGA forums.

For those of you who haven’t listened to Sonic Talk, Lycett’s explanation for the poor performance of the Wii U version was the simple fact that the demo the critics were playing at GC was based on old code. Since then, more previews have come out from other events complaining about the frame rate issues, but that’s because according to Lycett on SSMB, it’s the same build. Due to the rush to make the Wii U launch, Sumo Digital hasn’t  had time to make new demos to show off to the public, meaning that the build people have been playing this month was the same build they were playing at GC back in August. This demo, according to what Lycett said on Sonic Talk, was already three weeks old at that show.

In other words the demo that the press has been playing for the last two months was a demo based on code from July. So these previews are by no means based on a build anywhere near completion. Will this put the frame rate concerns to bed? Probably not, but I do hope this at least did so for everyone on this site. For the full Sonic Talk interview, click here.

Sonic Adventure 2 HD Footage Surfaces!

Itching to see more of Sonic Adventure 2 HD in action? Well, hold on to your party hats, because the footage you’re about to see is absolutely brilliant!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0ZU6F4DzgI

Courtesy of SEGA of Japan (if the Japanese language and text weren’t a dead giveaway), a near 3 minute montage went online yesterday showcasing the upcoming rerelease in high definition action. The video demonstrates cutscenes, multiplayer, the Chao Karate, and bits of the bonus documentary that will accompany the highly anticipated classic, and I have to say: the entire package looks gorgeous.

Eager fans of this game will find SA2HD, as well as NiGHTS into Dreams HD, available on their consoles as early as next week!

Can I just take a minute to add how beautiful that game looks right now? Because I would just love to say how beautiful that game looks right now. It’s so beautiful!

Sonic Adventure 2 Available in Europe October 3rd, PC Version Officially Confirmed

SEGA Europe has officially dated the upcoming Sonic Adventure 2 HD port for October 3rd on PSN and XBLA in Europe, one day after the game is released on the US PS Store. The XBLA date is a little odd given that SEGA of America announced an October 5th date for the XBLA version in the US and how Xbox Live updates worldwide, and usually on a Wednesday. Could SOA have made a mistake?

In other news, a PC version has been officially confirmed, but the release date for that platform is unfortunately ‘TBC’. Once a release date is divulged we’ll let you know. With today’s news, SEGA has also released some artwork, which you can view below in our gallery.

Update: Norwegian Retailer Lists “Sonic Wii-U”

UPDATE: SSMB Staffer Carbo points out “Placeholder for whatever moment an actual Wii U Sonic title is announced. Scandinavian retailers do this regularly for titles they “expect”. When Sonic Generations 3DS was announced, all previous placeholder preorders for “Sonic 3DS” on another website became allocated to that”

Looking around the site there are listings for a few unannounced games including Epic Yarn 2 (thanks to Josh in the comments for that one). Oh well it was nice to be excited whilst it lasted… anyone wanna take bets on when something is announced?

ORIGINAL STORY: Norwegian retailer CDON.com has posted a listing for a new Sonic game on the Wii-U, simply entitled “Sonic (Nintendo Wii U).” The retailer also has a listing for a ‘Super Monkey Ball Cafe’ game on the same system. For those who don’t know, ‘Cafe’ was the code name for the Wii-U.

Xbox.com Releases Two New Sonic Adventure 2 HD Screenshots

Sonic Adventure 2 has returned to Xbox.com after a long time away following its initial leak on the website back in June. Ten screenshots were posted back then with one of them of Sonic and Shadow racing showing a PlayStation circle button, but this time that screenshot has humorously been replaced with one of both characters jumping so as to not show the brakes option. The Chao Karate screenshot has also been replaced with one of Sonic in the Chao Kindergarten. You can view both new screenshots in our gallery below.

Mash-Up Monday: Afro Circus Zone

This was borderline Freak-Out Friday material… But hey, why not start our week off with this?

Like a bad joke, Arique decided to combine the infamous Carnival Night Zone’s music with the hypnotic Afro Circus by Marty, the zebra of Madagascar fame.

The result? This addicting mash-up!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AP1v5sGM56w

Okay, now remove Carnival Night from the equation, and replace it with Oil Desert.

S&ASRT Facebook Tab Now Live, Why Sonic is in Vehicles REVEALED!

SEGA has this evening opened a Facebook tab for all things Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on their official Sonic the Hedgehog Facebook page. It appears this will be in place of an official website for the game, as Sumo Digital confirmed a while back on the SSMB that their won’t be an official site this time. The Facebook tab has all of the features of a game website such as trailers, screenshots, features etc, but right now there isn’t anything new. We’ll keep our eyes open for any updates in the run up to launch, though.

Something we did notice is a SEGA rep answering fans questioning why Sonic is in vehicles and thought we would share it with you.

Now can we put an end to this question at long last, please? Pretty please?

“Oh Na Na, Pocky Was The Name!” Sonic Characters Given New Names

How many of you are familiar with these characters?

Go on be honest, if the names were not there you could probably name maybe 2 at the most? Ok I know some of you can name them all so please don’t flood the comments with ‘I know who they are!’ Because you would be wrong.

For years, those characters have had those names, whilst they’ve been adapted into other medias, you might be thinking ‘hey that Ricky looks like Sally Acorn’ or ‘That Pig and Rabbit look like those guys from Fleetways Sonic the Comic.’ you’d be right, they’ve been adapted and had their names changed. But the originals are still as far as we can tell, going by those names. Pecky, Ricky, Pocky, Flicky etc.

Until yesterday… When most of them ended up with a name change.

S&ASR Transformed to Feature ‘Mild Language’ and ‘Animated Blood’

SEGA’s Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed product page has updated with an ESRB rating of E10+ listing Animated Blood, Mild Language and Mild Cartoon Violence. Could the House of the Dead franchise be making a return appearance in Transformed with blood intact? If we take a look at the rating for the first game, it appears the mild language doesn’t derive from lyrics this time around. Could Shadow be returning to his d**n potty mouth ways? We expect a full rating will appear on the ESRB’s website soon. Maybe they will accidentally reveal a character again like they did with Ulala last time.

Sonic to have more appearances in Wreck-It Ralph

We’ve known for some time that Sonic was getting a cameo in the upcoming film Wreck-It Ralph, and at Sonic Boom we thought we may have seen that cameo. As it turns out, probably not! In a recent interview with TOTAL FILM, Wreck-It Ralph producer Clark Spencer discussed and another scene featuring Sonic, while discussing the input video game companies had over the course of the movie’s production.

“We had a scene where we wanted the rings to come out of Sonic, and SEGA said the only way that happens is if he falls over, and we didn’t have him fall over in the scene, so we actually went back and re-animated it.”

Sonic Races Onto Wii U Launch Line-Up in UK

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Sonic will be joining the likes of Mario and Rayman in the launch line-up for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console in the UK, as SEGA has revealed that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is set to be released on 30th November.

This means the Wii U version will hit store shelves two weeks after the game releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita on 16th November.

In news that will no doubt delight those planning to pick up the game on Nintendo’s new console, SEGA has also confirmed that the Limited Edition version – boasting Metal Sonic as a playable character and an OutRun inspired track to race around – will be available on Wii U as well.

Mash-Up Monday: They Don’t Care About Sky Fortress

Hail to the King (of Pop), baby!

As if the world hasn’t seen enough Michael Jackson/Sonic mash-ups, Hyper-Shan of the SSMB decided to combine one of the King’s tracks with something a little more recent than most combinations.

Thus, fusing Sky Fortress Acts 2 and 3 of Sonic 4: Episode II with They Don’t Care About Us, this mash-up was born!

Sound Test Saturday: Heroic Hedgehog

What is this day filled with so many wonders, casting its spell that I am now under?

…oh yeah, it’s Saturday! And what other wonder is there to feature on The Sonic Stadium save the Sound Test?

We’ve got a trio of remixes put together by members of the Sonic community: one that can only be done beautifully through the ebony and ivory, one that allows listeners to soar above raging dogfights, and one that can only be spelled through guitar as an epic win!

First up is, believe it or not, a compilation of all 4 Sonic Heroes themes in a wonderful 6 minute medley on the piano. Yes: Follow Me for Team Rose, We Can for Team Sonic, Team Chaotix for… well, Team Chaotix, and This Machine for Team Dark. Imagine my reaction when this landed in my inbox!

Without further ado, here’s Mister Macanulty with Heroic Hedgehogs!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi8yJN1vjnM

Now this is the kind of thing I love seeing in my inbox! There’s nothing like a good piano rendition of some of my favourite tunes, you know? And Macanulty here did a spectacular job here weaving four entirely different tracks together. Nerves were soothed, emotions were calmed, and it was a start to a great day. Thanks for sending this gem over, Mac!

For Act 2, Dill Tasker sent over his take on Sonic 4 Episode 2‘s sky-piercing stage, Sky Fortress Act 2 D&B Remix!

Does this make you want to get up and dance like a pro? …or dance like an idiot when no one’s around, maybe? Yes? Good. Smooth to the ears, but with a fast pace to keep you going. A definite winner for a remix on a Sonic 4 piece. Great job, Dill!

And for a bombastic finale, we got something for the metalheads! To those who grew up with Sonic in the 90s, this mouthwatering medley put together by 331Erock is for you! Here’s Sonic Meets Metal!

Eric Calderone’s feat here is nothing short of the word amazing. I feel faint just listening to him tear his instrument a new one. As if his solo towards the end didn’t spell “awesome” out for you, this mixture of Green Hill, Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, and the theme to SatAM is a true love letter to a way past cool childhood! Special thanks to Etna on the SSMB for the find!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be abusing the replay button to each of these tunes over and over again until I end up turning deaf.

Found an interesting remix, cover, or original track somewhere on the web? Got one of your own you’d want to show the world through The Sonic Stadium and SEGASonic: Radio? If you’ve answered yes to either question, then send everything you got over to vizardjeffhog@sonicstadium.org!

Games Radar Uploads ASRT Wii-U Gameplay

Games Radar have uploaded a short video showing gameplay footage of ASRT on the Wii-U, however unlike your typical gameplay video, this one includes a picture in picture of the controller, giving you an idea as to what appears on the screen as well as how one controls the game.

In terms of the game itself, the only criticisms I can spot are from the frame rate of the early build. The main problems seem to be with the controller itself. The screen is ‘distracting’ and that it’s ‘hard to press the boost’ assuming this means the ‘weapons fire’ button, since boost triggers automatically following a drift? That said there are a number of positives from the video like a ‘good sense of speed’ and the player does seem to be enjoying himself despite it being an early build.

Nothing much else new is shown in the video other than maybe some weapons, though we do get our first clear glimpse of the ‘Seaside Hill Monster,’ I don’t know if he/she has an official name yet. My theory? Eggman finally got Nessie.

So? What do you think? The comment box awaits!

Thanks to FourCartridge for the heads up.

More Sonic in Wreck-It Ralph?

Looks like the blue blur might be in for more than just a PSA cameo.

On the Wreck-It Ralph Facebook page, a new poster for the upcoming Disney movie has been unveiled. What has caught the attention of many is the addition of a certain Sonic the Hedgehog.

Rich Moore has not only confirmed Sonic’s appearance in the film, but generously showed fans a clip of the film back at Sonic Boom, where Sonic is seen giving a public service announcement not too unlike those of the old Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. However, the new poster, along with a recently released Japanese trailer for the movie (viewable after the jump!), seems to suggest that Sonic just might be playing a much bigger role in this theatrical love letter to retro gaming.

Wreck-It Ralph will premiere in North American theatres on November 2nd. Ralph is also a playable character in the upcoming Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

New Wreck-It Ralph Trailer Includes Sonic Cameo

A new trailer has just been released for upcoming Disney film Wreck-It Ralph, the story of a videogame antagonist who gets tired of being a bad guy and attempts to redeem his ways.

For those not already in the know, the film will contain numerous cameos by famous gaming icons, including our very own Sonic the Hedgehog – who you can catch a very brief glimpse of in this trailer. Sonic’s cameo appears at around the 0:47 mark but be warned… blink and you’ll miss it!

Doctor Eggman also makes a cameo appearance in the new trailer, which you can view over at Yahoo! Movies.

As previously reported, Sonic will be voiced in the movie by his official voice actor Roger Craig Smith, and Wreck-It Ralph himself will be starring alongside the blue blur as a playable character in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed this holiday season.

Wreck-It Ralph is due to hit cinemas in the US on 2nd November, and will make its way across the pond for a UK release on 15th February 2013.
