The Sonic Forces Demo Is Not Coming To The West

As we mentioned yesterday, Sega released a demo for Sonic Forces on the Japanese Nintendo eShop. Today the Japanese PSN also got the demo; this prompted many fans to speculate that the demo might eventually end up on western stores by next week.

Unfortunately, this will not be the case.

Earlier tonight on the Sonic the Hedgehog live-stream, Aaron Webber confirmed that the demo would not be making it to the west. Whilst no direct reason was given, it was suggested that regional differences were the reason behind the decision which was also the reason for the 60 second time limit.

If you are desperate to try the demo. You can create Japanese accounts on your PS4 and Switch and still download and play it, just a little extra hurdle but it is possible.

Sonic Unleashed Now on Playstation Network

Sonic Unleashed PS3 Box art

Well… better late than never?

Sonic Unleashed has been… uh… Unleashed onto the PSN nearly 6 years after it’s original release. So if you’ve been after a copy of this for a while and your efforts to get a physical version have failed, this might be an option for you.

Oddly, Sega never announced this, it randomly appeared in this weeks PSN update, prices are £15.99/€19.99/$19.99. Although it’s not that odd since Sega have still to announce that Sonic Heroes is on the PSN and that’s been on there for several years.

Not sure what else to say on this really, it’s a fun game, the Werehog isn’t that bad once you level him up, though it’s a tragic experience early game. Otherwise it’s quite challenging and has some decent music. Though Generations is a lot better.

Anyone want to place bets on this being a PSN+ Freebie in time.

US ratings board the ESRB has rated Sonic Heroes for the PlayStation 3, suggesting the PlayStation 2 game will finally be making its way to the US PS Store following its release on the European PS Store last February. No official word from SEGA or Sony, but as soon as there is, we’ll be sure to pass on the details.

Snow Way! Sonic 4: Episode 2 50% Off!

If you’ve been holding out for when this game would receive a discount, today’s the day! Well… for PS3 owners living in the EU that is. As part of Sony’s Festive Sale, Sonic 4: Episode 2 is now half price and members of Playstation Plus can receive an additional discount too.

From now until January 9th 2013 you can get the game for £4.99 or if you’re a PS+ user £4.49. Considering the original price on this was £9.99 that’s quite a decent saving. Remember this is only for people living in the EU right now, you will probably have to wait until next week to find out if the same deal is offered to US residents.

Thanks to Carbo for the tip.

Sonic the Fighters HD One Week Away

Looks like we won’t have to be waiting for much longer.

Coinciding with the Japanese release, Sonic the Fighters HD (along with Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighters 2) will become available digitally to Western audiences as early as next week!

The official SEGA Blog has confirmed that the upgraded brawler, which boasts online play and extra playable characters previously unavailable in the original, will roll out worldwide beginning from the 27th of November for North American PSN users at the cheap price of $4,99. This translates to 400MP on XBLA, with the arcade title releasing around the world the following day.

PSN users in Europe will have to wait until December 5th, where the game will be priced at €4.49/£3.69.

So, who’s excited to throw down in fisticuffs on the online ring?

Sonic Classic Collection Coming to PSN Next Week?

Whilst everybody has been getting excited over ASRT and Sonic the Fighters, it seems something has slipped under the radar. Website PSNStores.com who list sneak peeks of what will be on the Playstation Store in the coming weeks are claiming that a ‘Sonic Classic Collection’ will be coming to the PSN next week.

This is… rather strange. Mainly because whilst Xbox 360 owners have been able to enjoy more or less all the main classic Sonic titles via the Xbox Live Arcade, PS3 owners have only had Sonic 1 & 2 since 2011 with no sign of Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles.

Sonic Adventure 2 Available in Europe October 3rd, PC Version Officially Confirmed

SEGA Europe has officially dated the upcoming Sonic Adventure 2 HD port for October 3rd on PSN and XBLA in Europe, one day after the game is released on the US PS Store. The XBLA date is a little odd given that SEGA of America announced an October 5th date for the XBLA version in the US and how Xbox Live updates worldwide, and usually on a Wednesday. Could SOA have made a mistake?

In other news, a PC version has been officially confirmed, but the release date for that platform is unfortunately ‘TBC’. Once a release date is divulged we’ll let you know. With today’s news, SEGA has also released some artwork, which you can view below in our gallery.

Vocals Dropped for Sonic CD Port’s Soundtrack

Sonic Retro forum member RGamer2009 has revealed that SEGA’s digital download Sonic CD port does not feature the vocals in its soundtrack that were present in its original Mega CD release. RGamer2009 recorded the above footage from the GameStop Android tablet version, and at the 40 seconds mark you can see the game’s animated intro with just an instrumental version of Sonic – You Can Do Anything.

Christian Whitehead aka “The Taxman” followed the discovery up with the below message at the Sonic Retro forums suspecting legal rights issues.

I know it’s a bit of a bummer that the vocals had to be left out. It’s definitely not something due to laziness or something silly. I couldn’t tell you the circumstances, but at least from my understanding there are some rights associated with the lyrics themselves.

My guess is that since Casey Rankin is no longer alive, there might be problems negotiating the use of the lyrics outside of Japan. Please, don’t take this as gospel though since I don’t work in legal

Aaron Webber: “Sonic 4’s Physics Not to Have Too Many Massive Changes”

Aaron Webber just wrote a post over at the Sonic Retro forums regarding the amount of changes that will be made to Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s physics for the final game.

There are some minor changes to music, most notably being one act that has actually had its music revamped completely. We’ll reveal which act this is as part of our S4 Update Blogs.

Physics in general are not going to see too many massive changes, though know that I did push months ago to see how much would be possible. The biggest hurdle here was the level design, and the many ways that even small physics changes require updating almost every stage. It is never as easy as many might think, but I did ask and made sure it was brought to certain people’s attention.

Our biggest focus with the updates has been to make a game that people can have fun playing. When you play Sonic 4, whether you’re an old fan or a new fan, that you can enjoy the levels and not have any moments that are too frustrating or difficult, or that make you want to stop playing. No moments where a random gimmick forces you to lose the fun factor that the game had. This is why Lost Lab Act II saw major updates from the original design, and why other parts of the game are also being polished, including another big level update I think you guys will be glad to hear of.

In addition to the big stuff, and though physics won’t be changed to the extent I know some people here would like, we have thrown in a number of small but important updates to other minor parts of the game. They are things that I doubt most reviewers will ever take note of, but that you guys as fans will hopefully appreciate. Some of these will also be revealed in our next S4 Update blog coming this month.

Though it’s impossible to fulfill every request,I hope that the changes we have made will prove that our claims to have been listening are founded solidly, and that while we can’t make every single person happy, we are doing what we can to make the game more enjoyable for everyone.

Aaron Webber is a member of SEGA’s Community Team and has been their main liaison between Sonic 4 and the fans for awhile.

E3 2010 Preview: Sonic Adventure XBLA

Really, what is there to say about Sonic Adventure? A lot of people love it. Some people hate it. A lot of people seem to forget just how good it was and call it crappy because a successor released in 2006 was utter tripe. This game will hopefully remind them of just how good the original was.

But, more than that, this game has actually made some technical improvements over the original as well. The game itself feels a bit tighter; it’s more difficult to get caught on environments, and I have yet to fall through the floor. The overall collision detection is noticeably better, and I was only able to push myself through one of the white picket fences once. That isn’t to say the game’s collision detection is completely FLAWLESS, of course, but the bugs remaining at this point don’t seem so consequential. I’m not even able to take my short cut near the end of the level, where I shoot myself up the white ramp, move over to the right, and fling myself over to the next island. The frame no longer misses a beat either. I threw myself at enemies a couple times when I was loaded with rings, and the frame rate remained smooth, unlike in past incarnations of the game, where it would often stutter.

Yes, this whale still hates blue hedgehogs with a passion!

The game’s visuals have also seen a noticeable HD upgrade. The colors are more vibrant then they were before, and the Sonic model definitely looks like it has more polys then it does in the Gamecube version.

Overall, SA plays like the original, with minor improvements. I (stupidly) forgot to ask about wide screen, but that’s something I’ll rectify tomorrow. I don’t really think this is worth the purchase for anyone who has already experienced, at least from what I’ve seen.  The changes are there, but aside from the minor HD upgrades, they may be hard to notice. We’ll see if there is anything about this game that’ll make it worth a repurchase when it comes out later this year.

Sackboy To Wear Sonic & Friends Like A Cheap Coat

In a move that was surely only a matter of time, Sonic costumes are making their way to LittleBigPlanet. All in all five costumes will be making their way to the Playstation Store sometime mid December for your Sackboy to wear. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman arefairly obvious choices but the Werehog seems a year too late to make much impact but is sure to please die-hard Unleashed fans. Whats mind boggling is the exclusion of Chip and the inclusion of Knuckles, the spiny anteater never actually appearing in Unleashed.

We’ll keep you posted on the specific release date and prices when they are made available. In the mean time check out the pictures below.
