Sonic Dash continues to get more love from it’s developer Hardlight. A new update is now live which adds more content and a community challenge.
Eggman has been added in the form of a new boss battle, as Sonic you have to dodge missiles and land mines planted by the bad doctor.
From what early commentators have said, the boss battle works very similar to the Zazz boss fight, anyone who beats the boss earns a huge bonus score.

We’ve heard a lot of new information recently about the upcoming Sonic Boom game for Wii U and 3DS, but what of the show it’s actually based on? Well, thanks to the interview above from NintendoWorldReport, we now know a few extra details about the CG animated cartoon.
The biggest new revelation is with regards to the show’s format. It’s been stated before that the show’s primary focus will be humour and comedy with some action thrown in for good measure, but this has now seemingly been cemented by the fact that the world will effectively “reset” at the beginning of each episode – in other words, this series will be more akin to the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon where each story is standalone and can be watched in any order, as opposed to Sonic X which has ongoing story arcs. This will no doubt come as a disappointment to those who were hoping for a more fleshed out story in the cartoon, but it will undoubtedly make for a more accessible experience to newcomers.
Don’t lose all hope for story in the Sonic Boom universe yet though, as it’s already been reiterated several times that the Wii U/3DS games will be heavily driven by narrative and serve as a prequel to the cartoon, setting up the world and its characters which will then be visited in various scenarios during the series itself. In a way, it’s a nice compromise – we get the story and the action in the game, and the quick-fire comedy from the animated episodes. The best of both worlds, perhaps?
What do you make of Sonic Boom returning to the status quo for each individual story? Let us know in the comments!

In this week’s Famitsu magazine in Japan, it’s been announced that the game will finally be seeing release in Japan on May 15th, 2014, but only on Wii U and PS3, leaving out the other versions on 3DS, Vita, Xbox 360, and PC. The price will be 6,980 Yen (so roughly $70 dollars).
The original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing on regular platforms did not see a release in Japan, however the mobile versions on iOS and Android did.
Thanks to Nintendo Everything for the summary.

A whole slew of new details regarding Sonic Boom have surfaced thanks to the above interview brought to our attention by SSMB member Storme. As well as giving us a more extensive look at the New York venue for SEGA’s big announcements last week, it reveals some intriguing changes to the traditional Sonic premise – chief among them, the absence of the Chaos Emeralds in the Boom universe. How this will affect the story and mythos of the new series remains to be seen, but it does throw an appearance by Super Sonic or any other super forms (and arguably even the Master Emerald) into doubt.
Additional details revealed in the interview include:
- The Wii U GamePad will be used to display a map and upgrades, as well as another function which is yet to be unveiled
- The game follows an adventure style with currency and upgrades for the characters
- The game is more “organically” challenging, in that difficulty arises from skill in combat and finding hidden secrets as opposed to enemies just becoming tougher
- All the levels in the game are connected by the story and its locations
- You will mainly use two characters at a time during gameplay, but all four will show up in hubs and boss fights
- There will be points in the game where you are required to use a certain character to proceed
- The game will be very character driven, with a lot of focus put onto each individual character and their unique abilities
- We will “definitely” be seeing other characters from the Sonic series making an appearance – these will be revealed over the coming months
- Inspiration is being taken from Sonic 2, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Generations
(summary adapted from a post by SSMB member Blue Blood)
What do you make of all this new information? Are you disappointed that the Chaos Emeralds are a no-show? Are you excited that other characters will be popping up in the game? Let us know in the comments!

In the consumer business, although the Group launched multiple titles including “Football Manager 2014” and “Sonic Lost World” in the packaged game software field, sales were low due to the harsh market environment.
Sega have confirmed in their newly published Financial Earnings report that the Wii U and 3DS exclusive title Sonic Lost World has shipped 640,000 copies worldwide as of December 31st. Sega also shipped 680,000 copies of Football Manager 2014 on PC in Europe and NA, while the Japan-only Soccer Tsuku: Let’s Make a Pro Soccer Club managed to ship 200,000 copies on PS3 and Vita.

Fans fearing that the new designs will be permanent can rest at ease. Destructoid has reported that Sega of America president and COO John Chen told them the following
“Sonic Boom will not be replacing the original franchise.”
So it seems that Sonic Boom is not part of a redesign, but will instead simply be the style of everything associated with the Sonic Boom television show.

Sonic Boom has had many heads turning with how fast and how much news has been dropping over the past couple of hours — the game based off of the upcoming CGI cartoon has been revealed to be the highly anticipated third Nintendo exclusive title, Big Red Entertainment (as well as a particularly X-treme individual) is involved in its development, the redesigns of the major cast have been shown, it just keeps on rolling!
Now, SEGA has finally and formally unveiled the big daddy of ’em all – the cartoon itself, produced by the good folks at OuiDO!

The designs for Sonic Boom have emerged from the Year of Sonic event being held in New York. Sonic has blue arms, a scarf, sports tape all over his arms and legs and Knuckles is a giant.
Other details to emerge from this event are as follows
So there’s going to be a new console and mobile game, toys based off the show made by Tomy and they will look like that. Although to be fair it could have been a lot worse.
Now we don’t know yet if this is the new direction for the series or if this will just be limited to Boom’s universe and the one we know and love will still continue as normal.
We’ll keep you updated with more information when we get it.

I really don’t know how you’re going to react to this one… so try to remain calm.
Machinima has posted a very interesting YouTube video which contained the following image.
The text on that image reads as follows…
2014 will mark a renaissance for Sonic the Hedgehog. Please join us to be the first to hear about SEGA’s exclusive announcements and plans for the Sonic brand”
“2014 is the Year of Sonic,” “Renaissance of the brand” and the image of the Sonic Boom promotional image. For those who don’t know, in it’s most basic term, renaissance means ‘rebirth.’ Now you understand why I said remain calm…
If you are doubting the authenticity of this image, to back it up, Segas entire community team, the head of marketing and several producers at Sega have recently made public that they are in New York City on a business trip. Given the huge numbers of staff in New York right now, and their roles, this is a potentially huge announcement which will have an impact over Sonic as a brand.
I can only begin to speculate what might be getting shown, but following so soon after hedgehog day which saw no announcements or even a Blog entry from Sega, the timing makes this more significant for Sonic fans.
As always, we will keep you upto date with news as and when we get it.

Talk about a bolt from the blue! Completely out of nowhere, a brand new version of Sonic Dash, curiously titled Sonic Dash S, has hit iOS and Android devices in Japan. While it doesn’t appear to differ too heavily from the current edition of the game available elsewhere across the globe, this iteration does bring with it some new features and refinements.
First up, Sonic Dash S actually seems to have some sort of plot to it. No longer is Sonic just aimlessly running for the sake of running – now he’s on a high speed chase to stop Dr. Eggman, who has once again made off with the elusive Master Emerald (Knuckles just can’t catch a break, can he?). Sonic Dash S also sees the return of the Chao who, in a similar fashion to their appearance in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, provide Sonic and his friends with special abilities to boost their skills. That’s not the only thing bumping up the blue blur’s stats in this version either – you can upgrade the characters themselves by acquiring bonuses and levelling up. Essentially, it sounds like the same Sonic Dash experience, but padded out with a few additional elements to spice things up.
SSMB member SwiftWinds also notes that characters have their own special abilities when they reach a certain level – for instance, Tails can fly out of a pit, Knuckles can overcome bombs and spikes, Amy increases your banked ring count, and Shadow increases the rings you earn at the end of a run. Additionally, characters can be unlocked using normal rings in Sonic Dash S rather than the red rings that are otherwise required in the standard version of Sonic Dash.
There is no word yet on whether Sonic Dash S will hit any other regions, be it as a brand new download or as an update to the existing game – but stay tuned to TSS and we’ll keep you in the loop! Thanks to SSMB member Woun for bringing it to our attention in the first place.

At the Nuremberg Toy Fair, there was a sign which has caused a bit of a stir by confirming a new Sonic game is in production, however the sign also had a strange piece of information regarding the new cartoon ‘Sonic Boom’ due for broadcast at the end of this year.
That being “The first CG Animated Film in the Sonic Franchise”
Now this could be interpreted in a number of ways… It’s either in reference to the fact the cartoon as a whole is CG animated which has not happened before.
Or, that Sonic Boom has a much larger linking story than we’re being led to believe.
Or…. … … That there is a much larger Sonic Animated Film in development?
Personally, I can’t see it being a stand alone film, it’s more likely one of the first 2 options. Hey who knows, maybe I’m wrong and there is a movie on the way.
Anyway, I figured you would all find this of some interest given how lacking news on the cartoon has been lately.

At the Nuremberg toy fair held last week, toy maker Jazwares had a booth showcasing it’s Sonic toys along with this very interesting sign.
If this is correct, it would suggest that Sega have already started work on a new Sonic game which is heading to the PS4, Xbox One and the Wii U.
We all know that Sega intends to release a 3rd exclusive Sonic game on a Nintendo platform at some point, however this photograph would suggest that Sega are already working on the other next gen systems and a Sonic game is in development or at the early planning stages.
If you’ve not been keeping track, this is how the Sonic games are currently lined up.
- Sonic Lost World (2013)
- Mario & Sonic at Sochi (2013)
- Unannounced 3rd Nintendo exclusive (expected 2014).
- Unannounced Next Gen Sonic title (2015).
What is however significant about this image is that there are no logos for any current gen consoles, suggesting that all future Sonic games will be on next gen systems.
Keep checking TSS for more information as and when we get it.

Based on photos taken by toy website Idle Hands, it would appear that the gift company Paladone are making figures based on the popular game Doodle Jump. And one of the more interesting photos taken was this…
That is the ‘Doodler’ wearing a Sonic costume. Well I wasn’t expecting to see that today but alrighty then. So you might be asking, is this official? Well it would seem so, Paladone have a huge banner above their booth displaying the Sonic the Hedgehog logo and from another photo taken have several other items on show at their booth too.
Which then begs the question, is there going to be some kind of Sonic Doodle Jump cross over? Or is this one of those one off bits of fan service?
No details on when these will be available yet or prices, but stick to TSS and we’ll update you with more information when we get it.

“A Sonic Convention? The only people who will turn up to that will be the drunks over the road!”
A few years ago, shortly after the idea of a Sonic convention was first brought up in a small cafe in London, the idea was pitched to a few members of the Sonic community and one of the more joky responses was the above.
But despite a few ‘are we sure this is good idea’ reactions, Summer of Sonic 2008 went ahead, and people actually turned up. Since then it’s gotten bigger and bigger and it would appear that it’s getting noticed in circles outside of the Sonic fan base.
In the recently published Guinness World Records 2014 Gamers Edition. Summer of Sonic has set a Guinness World Record! It turns out that not only was Summer of Sonic the first officially recognised Sonic fan Convention, but it’s also the first official fan convention for a video game character!
Congratulations to everyone involved with Summer of Sonic, both past and present, and congratulations and thank you to everyone who has attended and supported the event. Since without you lot, we probably would have had to invite the drunks from over the road!

It appears the Deadly Six Edition of Sonic Lost World for Wii U has run its course in Europe. According to new listings on Amazon UK and Amazon France, the standard edition of the game is now available to buy. This edition was quietly released on January 7th and both sites have now run out of the Deadly Six Edition themselves. However, you can still purchase it via other sellers on their sites (UK, France), but it’ll cost you more of your hard-earned cash. GAME UK has also now replaced the Deadly Six Edition with the standard edition of the game.
The Deadly Six Edition still seems to be available as normal in the US, for the time being at least.

Yesterday evening we learned that Greg Martin had passed away in May of last year through a friend of his on the Nintendo Age forums. Greg Martin’s art had a prolific presence in early 90’s video game box art, spanning dozens of franchises. Though most Sonic fans may never have heard of him they will surely recognize his work: he was the man behind every piece of Sonic box art in the early 90s. His work came to define Sonic’s appearance in America and Europe, appearing not just in video game box art but also in a variety of adverts.
If you wish to learn more about Greg Martin, you can check out the Nintendo Age post that reported his passing. If you wish to see more of his work, please check out his website. Our thoughts are with his family

Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed finally hits the iOS and Android platforms tomorrow, and mobile players are in for a pleasant surprise.
According to the official Facebook page of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic finally hits mobile platforms on January 2nd. Amongst the promotional images, one (pictured above) is of particular interest as it all but confirms that Ryō Hazuki of Shenmue fame will be joining the roster on these two platforms. It is unknown at this time how many other platforms he will show up on in the future, although we have already reported on him being sighted in the Yogscast Charity Stream which was the PC version. See if you can pick out all the classic SEGA and Shenmue references he comes with…and perhaps even a little jovial ribbing from Sumo Digital.

Aw yeah, this is happenin’!
Though there is no confirmation as to which platforms outside of PC will be receiving this, if any, it has nonetheless been revealed through the recent Yogscast Humble Bundle charity stream that Ryō Hazuki of the Dreamcast cult classic Shenmue series will be hitting the streets of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in the near future!
In November of last year, Steve “S0L” Lycett of SUMO Digital had challenged fans to vote among a slew of SEGA characters to decide a top three for ASRT DLC coming down the line. Since then, a number of exclusive characters, mainly from SEGA’s own PC-centric titles, have found their way into the PC version of the game, but Ryō, who won by a landslide of 3379 votes, marks himself as the first DLC character to have come as a result of the community polls.
We’ll keep you posted once word has come as to what platforms Ryō is expected to arrive on, and when!
Now let’s see, who were the runners-up again…?

While no release date has been shared (though all guesses point to ‘incoming’!), an upcoming patch for the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World is now on its way!
Quoted verbatim from the SEGA Blog update, players should expect the following changes will be incorporated into the game:
- Collecting 100 rings will now grant the player an extra life.
- In the event of a Game Over, we have doubled the amount of lives the player will begin with when continuing. (From 5 to 10)
- The Indigo Asteroid, Crimson Eagle, Orange Rocket, and Black Bomb Color Powers can now be controlled using the analog stick and buttons.
- Fixed a rare graphical issue that would sometimes appear during the pinball section of the Frozen Factory casino area.
- When completing the NiGHTMARE DLC, users will be notified that they can re-play it after scoring 100,000 points.
- Items will now appear on the world map.
These changes are sure to come to the relief of many, especially the returning bonus life per 100 rings mainstay given the game’s steep learning curve, so owners of SLW U should be sure to have their consoles connected and at the ready once the patch rolls out!

A few days ago, entertainment news magazine Variety reported the news that Christopher Evan Welch had sadly passed away and under his acting credits, listed that he was the voice actor for Tails in the TV show, ‘The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.’
Following information discovered at SegaBits, we can now state that this information is not correct.
What is correct, is that Christopher Evan Welch (aged 48) who is a well respected actor who had roles in War of the Worlds and several TV shows, who entertained thousands of people, has sadly passed away.
However, he was not the voice actor for Tails.
SegaBits were able to reach out to Welch’s family and his acting agency (paradigm) who both confirmed that he was not the voice actor nor had anything to do with the Sonic cartoon show.
So whats happened? Most likely, someone by the name of Christopher Welch (who is in the credits for AoStH) did indeed voice Tails. Meanwhile, someone else by the name of Christopher Evan Welch also started his career around the same time. Upon his death Variety and several other entertainment news sites have made a serious error with the acting credits, hence the confusion and the position we’re now in.
Now this should not at all subtract from the fact that someone who was very well loved and respected has passed away and that there is a family somewhere who have to deal with this loss.
If anyone wishes to donate to Christopher Evan Welch’s daughters college fund, donations may be made to Emma Roberts Welch c/o the Law Offices of Michael W. Hubbard P.O. Box 180656 Dallas, TX. 75218, or via Paypal.com to christopherevanwelchmemorial@yahoo.com.
As mentioned yesterday, our thoughts and condolences are with Christopher’s family at this difficult time.

Uupdate: Following new information released by Welch’s family and acting agency, it turns out that he was not the voice actor for Tails or had anything to do with the Sonic cartoon show.
Please see our newest story for details.
Original Story: It has been brought to our attention that AoStH voice actor Christopher Evan Welch, who played the role of Tails has passed away. His agency Paradigm confirmed that Welch was filming for HBO in LA when he died early Monday morning in hospital, he is believed to have been 48.
Many early fans will have memories of his voice acting career as Tails, in the television series “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.” However, he was also a very well respected actor, having roles on Broadway and film credits that include Spielberg’s “The War of the Worlds” and Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
Our thoughts and condolences are with Christopher’s family at this difficult time.

“Without Boundaries”, the original soundtrack for Sonic Lost World, was released in Japan as a physical 3 CD set last week. However, in a surprising move for those of us in other regions, SEGA has revealed via their blog that the soundtrack can also now be downloaded via iTunes and Amazon MP3.
You can download all 93 tracks digitally, one disc at a time. Each disc, or ‘volume’, will set you back £7.99 (meaning the total cost of the OST comes to £23.97) or you can purchase individual tracks for 79p apiece.
Will you be downloading the Sonic Lost World soundtrack? Let us know in the comments!
