Updated: Sonic Mania Plus Launches on Luna, Amazon’s Cloud Gaming Service

Updated 9/25/2020:

Sonic Mania Plus and Wonder Boy: The Dragon Trap are indeed launch games, per Digital Trends and other outlets.

Original news post:

Following in the lineage of Stadia, xCloud, Parsec, and the thing that Sony does that no one remembers, Amazon has pushed its way into the cloud gaming fistfight with Luna, a platform targeting computers, Fire TV, iDevices via browser backdoors, and Android. The service launches today in the US for approved early access users with an early access monthly subscription of $5.99 USD.

Announced titles for the service include Yooka-Laylee, Control, Resident Evil 7, and… possibly Sonic Mania? Promo images show icons for both the 2017 Sonic masterpiece and the Wonder Boy remake. In contrast to the other two, Panzer Dragoon was officially announced.

Details about the service, including international release, remain scarce, but perhaps soon, you will be able to play this modern classic on yet another platform. So if you have permissive data caps and a desire to play Sonic Mania on your phone, your time has come, you hypothetical person, you.

Sonic Talk 62: Copyrights, Shmopyrights

Forgive the lateness of our podcast as we recorded this one a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean it’s not chock full of Sonic-ey goodness! In this episode we discuss Jason’s trip to E3, the fan revival of Sonic Runners, Sonic Revolution 2019, Funko Pop Sonic cereal, an unofficial Sonic book that uses fanmade images and much, much more. Because hey, who needs copyrights when you can just slap a bunch of images together, right?

Special Note: We used the cover from the plagiarized Carlton Sonic book for this month’s podcast image. That render on that plagiarized book was created by Deviant Art user FinnAkira, and you can find it here.

Sonic Spin Dashes Back into Kids Books Next July

Sonic will be returning to literature next year with two books from the Penguin Group. Written by author Kiel Phegley, both books have recently popped up on Amazon, with a scheduled release date of July 10, 2018.

The first of these books, Sonic and the Tales of Terror, appeared yesterday. According to its description, the book will feature illustrations from Ian McGinty and have Eggman and his minions trapping Sonic in three, presumably terrifying, stories. The book will have 64 pages and will be for reading age levels 7-10. The book is currently available for pre-order in both print and on Kindle for $6.99 USD.

The other book, Race Against Time, is a 32 page sticker activity book. As the name suggests, this is an activity book where readers must help Sonic recapture the Chaos Emeralds by completing the book’s puzzles and games. It is also has a reading age level of 7-10, and is currently available for pre-order in print for $7.99 USD.

Get into the Halloween Spirit with a Spooky New Sonic T-Shirt

Reader beware, you’re in for a scare – a scary t-shirt, that is!

Last month, SEGA got into the 25th anniversary spirit with a limited edition pair of official Sonic Mania tees, and with Halloween around the corner, a spooky new t-shirt is now up for grabs on Amazon US. The new piece of apparel features Sonic as he faces off against a thematically dapper Eggman on his Eggmobile with surrounding Bat-Brains.

The new tee has yet to surface on Amazon UK, but those in the States can nab a navy or asphalt-coloured shirt for $19.99 today.

Amazon Prime Members in Canada Can Now Save 20% Off Preorders and Newly Released Games

Sonic Mania Collector's Edition

So it’s no great secret that the Canadian dollar has flopped quite a bit over the past decade, with prices on imported goods having seen a major increase in order to make up for the drop in our currency’s worth. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime members in the US of A have enjoyed their exclusive 20% discount on the latest and upcoming hits in gaming while their northern neighbours wondered why they were still subscribed to this service in the first place if no such incentive was available to them.

Volume 2 of the Sonic Runners Soundtrack is Now Available on iTunes and Amazon!

SonicRunners2OST

To celebrate Sonic’s 24th anniversary, SEGA was internally working on their own take on the endless runner genre with their new mobile game, Sonic Runners. While the game was released early in smaller markets for testing, it finally dropped internationally on iOS and Android devices towards the end of June, and with it came the release of the first volume of the game’s soundtrack.

And now, just in time for Christmas, the EP-length Sonic Runners: Original Soundtrack Vol. 2 has finally arrived on digital streaming services!

The second volume, like the first, is solely composed by Tomoya Ohtani himself, and is mainly comprised of some of the music featured in recent in-game events – unsurprisingly, the music is gorgeous and an absolute blast to listen to, making the second volume a must-have for any Sonic OST fan’s library.

The track listing is as follows:

  1. “Going My Way” (1:01)
  2. “Go Quickly!” (3:09)
  3. “Fiery Passion” (3:34)
  4. “End of the Summer” (3:48)
  5. “Strange Parade” (3:42)
  6. “Magical Snow Day” (4:11)
  7. “Ambition” (3:54)

The second volume is available now on iTunes (UK / US) and Amazon (UK / US), with individual tracks costing £0.79 / $0.99 a pop. If you choose to get the entire 7-track album right away, the price sits at an affordable £5.53 / $6.93 – with Vol. 2 sounding as beautiful as it does, it’s an absolute steal!

Planning on downloading this gem for yourself? If you’ve already bought the album, which track is your favourite of the bunch? Sound off below!

Sonic Boom Fire & Ice’s Plot Sure Sounds Familiar

SBFI_3DS_keyart_large_1433865264

Sonic Boom Fire & Ice may not have been at E3, but it’s up on Amazon for pre-order, along with a brief plot synopsis which some may find they’ve heard before.

Dr. Eggman has discovered the supercharged element ragnium on the mythical Island of Ragna Rock. He mines it as a fuel source, piping off the messy by-products of the operation to adjacent islands, creating fire and ice gameplay. Using this fuel to power his ultra-fast bot racers is his latest plan to discredit his eternal rival Sonic, but backed by ragnium, fire and ice, a robot army, and D-Fekt, an unflinchingly powerful henchman, this time Dr. Eggman just may succeed. Sonic and friends must re-claim each island by destroying enemies, vanquishing the Island Defender, winning rival races, and reversing the flow of the elemental tubes. It all culminates with an epic battle on the Island of Ragna Rock where Sonic may just have to save Dr. Eggman from his own creation.

Eggman finds a source of incredible power, builds a powerful robot army, his creation turns against him, Sonic has to save Eggman.

That sounds, very familiar to a lot of previous Sonic games, in fact it sounds very similar to the plot of Rise of Lyric in many ways.

Amazon is currently asking for $39.99 for pre-orders and currently has a placeholder release date in place.

SLW’s Deadly Six Edition Now Er… Dead in Europe

deadly six edition

It appears the Deadly Six Edition of Sonic Lost World for Wii U has run its course in Europe. According to new listings on Amazon UK and Amazon France, the standard edition of the game is now available to buy. This edition was quietly released on January 7th and both sites have now run out of the Deadly Six Edition themselves. However, you can still purchase it via other sellers on their sites (UK, France), but it’ll cost you more of your hard-earned cash. GAME UK has also now replaced the Deadly Six Edition with the standard edition of the game.

The Deadly Six Edition still seems to be available as normal in the US, for the time being at least.

Sonic Lost World OST out now on iTunes

lostworldostwithoutboundaries

“Without Boundaries”, the original soundtrack for Sonic Lost World, was released in Japan as a physical 3 CD set last week. However, in a surprising move for those of us in other regions, SEGA has revealed via their blog that the soundtrack can also now be downloaded via iTunes and Amazon MP3.

You can download all 93 tracks digitally, one disc at a time. Each disc, or ‘volume’, will set you back £7.99 (meaning the total cost of the OST comes to £23.97) or you can purchase individual tracks for 79p apiece.

Will you be downloading the Sonic Lost World soundtrack? Let us know in the comments!

SLWU_Amazon

No sign of a release date just yet, though it appears that we already have a price point on both versions of Sonic Lost World! Hey, at least you’ll know what the damage to your wallet will be in advance, right?

Via Amazon, it appears that the Wii U version of Lost World is priced at $49,95USD, while the 3DS version of the parkour-centric title is to be sold for $39,95USD. Pretty fair prices, mind!

RUMOUR: Chemical Plant Zone to Feature in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing 2?

Keen-eyed SSMB member Hogfather has spotted new listings at Amazon France for the upcoming Meccano Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing construction sets. The listings include the previously mentioned Green Hill and Casino Night sets, (though Casino Night is listed as Casino Street from Sonic 4: Episode 1 here), but most interesting is the listing for a Chemical Plant Zone set. If the toys are being tied-in with a Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sequel, then it appears the Sonic franchise will be represented with a focus on the classic games this time around.

Links to the listing and screen-caps of them (in case they’re pulled) can be found after the jump.

Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition Import Guide

Live outside of Europe and Australia and want to import the Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition revealed yesterday? Well, thanks to New Zealand retailer Mighty Ape and Amazon Germany, you can. Both retailers ship worldwide. Mighty Ape is selling both PS3 and Xbox 360 versions for $199.99 AUS, which translates to just over $165 US. Amazon Germany lists both PS3 and Xbox 360 editions for EUR 99,99, which is just under $140 US. American SSMB member, and SEGA Bits staffer Barry the Nomad tells us they ship worldwide.

We don’t know how many of the Collector’s Editions both Mighty Ape and Amazon Germany have, but the former says they have ‘limited stock’. If you’re interested, you’re best to pre-order now.

UK ASR Box Art Revealed Including PC & Amazon UK Selling Bentley Jones MP3’s

UPDATE: PC box art revealed.

Amazon’s UK site has revealed the final UK box art for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing which looks to be matching the U.S. box art including the Xbox 360 version’s ‘With Banjo-Kazooie’ sub title. ShopTo.net have also revealed the PC box art.

Also worth noting on Amazon’s UK site is that they are now selling Bentley Jones new songs from his So Much More… album in MP3 format as an album and individually, those who prefer CD’s are out of luck. As far as I’m aware this is the first time a UK retailer is selling any of Bentley Jones songs so this is very good news for Bentley Jones and the fans. Hopefully we’ll see more UK retailers follow suit.
