Dear Diary,
That is all. And no, it wasn’t me this time.
Continue reading Nice to meet you sir. Your name?Rumour: Following on from its great exclusive coverage of Liepzig, fan site NightsIntoDreams.com is reporting that the long-awaited sequel is to be delayed until Spring 2008. The game was on show at last week’s Game Convention in Germany at only 55% completion.
Niraven from outlet GameLegend posts via the NiGHTS fansite that: “We contacted SEGA this morning and spoke with SEGA’s Product and PR Manager and he told us that it’s been officially pushed to Q1 2008. That’s literally “this morning’s news”, and it’s coming from the most credible source it can come from.”
SEGA are throwing ‘No Comments’ out all over the place, but a delay wouldn’t sound so ridiculous, considering NiGHTS Into Dreams is considered for many fans as Sonic Team’s last stand — any botching of this title will result in some very disillusioned followers.
TSS thinks that this is really only good news – if nothing else it shows that Sonic Team are taking their good sweet time with this one… hopefully. With NiGHTS we wouldn’t want it any other way, if we get absolute perfection at the end of it.
More on NiGHTS as we snuff out. Stay tuned.
What you are about to read below, are e-mails sent to the NiGHTS fan website, NiGHTSIntoDreams.com , a website that has for months been providing NiGHTS fans with exclusive and accurate insider info, as well as compiling the latest news articles regarding the game. Recently, at Leipzig’s Game Convention, Tawny Ditmer (aka Niraven) has been going to the NiGHTS kiosk every day, watching the game in motion and shaking down the Sega rep for info. Over the last three days, Ditmer has sent NiD loads of info and media, with some more coming in the future. Keep in mind, what you are about to read below contains some spoilers for the plot. If you wish to go into the game fresh, don’t continue (although you can still look at the YouTube videos).
Head on over to NiGHTSintoDreams.com for the full diary and details.
TSS will post this footage as soon as it’s up, so be sure to check back to this news post. Again, SPECIAL THANKS to Mrs. Ditmer and NiGHTSintoDreams.com! There will be more info, including hands on impressions, in the next news update later today, so stay tuned
Looks like those who are wanting the latest handheld game pretty bad are being targeted by UK Supermarket Tesco, as the chain store advertises Sonic Rush Adventure in their sales catalogue for a paltry £14.
In what can only be a printing error, the yet-to-be-released Nintendo DS title has been placed alongside other budget titles as Cars and Avatar. It’s one thing to misprint ‘Sonic Rush’ as its sequel due to similarities in name, but the box art is the same as well. Continue reading Sonic Rush Adventure for 14 Quid?

A Spanish interview with Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai reveals that Sonic the Hedgehog is already present in the Nintendo fighting game, and awaits SEGA’s approval before implementing him into the final product.
The interview, initially posted by Shakidna on Sonic CulT forums and then translated by ICEknight of The GHZ, is the first real confirmation of Sonic’s existence in the game, and is no doubt news to get many fans excited.
Responding to a direct question of “Are you going to include SEGA’s mascot, Sonic The Hedgehog?”, Sakurai gives the following:
“Well… That’s a tough question, I’ll tell you that Sonic’s already in the game, but we’re still waiting for a last confirmation from SEGA. Due to the proximity of the game’s release, SEGA’s deadline to submit their confirmation is the 26th this month, and in that date the official site will be updated about the inclusion or not of SEGA’s mascot in the game. I’m personally crossing my fingers.” Continue reading Smash Bros Brawl: “Sonic’s Already In The Game”
Sonic Wrecks has opened polls for its Awards ceremony, with 15 different categories to vote into. Visitors must vote in all awards before their cast is voted, so be sure to take a look at all the nominees before you make up your mind.
You can visit the site page here.
The Sonic Stadium Network is nominated in several awards, if you have enjoyed TSSNET this year then please consider voting for us in the following categories:
Best Use of Images/Graphics: The Sonic Stadium
Best Sonic Resource: FastFeet Media
Most Essential Service or Feature: Sonic News, FastFeet Media, SEGASonic Radio
We tend not to get awards or credit for much these days so it’d be nice. 🙂
In other news, SEGASonic Radio had a rip-roaring success with the Sonic Super 16th Event, just about the only celebration of Sonic’s Anniversary which earned 70+ listeners and the appearance of Lee Brotherton (Remix Factory) in the Chatroom.
Sonic Sprite Comic fansite Sonic Wrecks has just posted their Award nominees online, causing some controversy over their fan fiction category in the process.
Fifteen awards are listed in this year’s ‘Handies’, including categories for humour, best design and biggest disappointment of the year. Among those included are The Green Hill Zone for Best Resource, Sonic Yoda for Most Underrated Site and Untamed Beauty for Specialist Website. Continue reading Sonic Wrecks Awards – Nominees Listed
Not much to say here, really, but various sources have confirmed (GameInformer, some random online store, GameTrailers) the existence of a sequel to Sonic’s PSP debut, Sonic Rivals! The game is set to come out on November 6th this year, and will be on sale for $39.99.
No other details have been revealed regarding the content of the game. Stay tuned to Sonic News for further developments!
We don’t normally cover stuff like this (hacking discoveries and whatnot), but we felt this was interesting enough to warrant a news story.
If you’ve ever been to Sonic CulT, S2Beta, or the like, you’d know that they tend to specialize in ROM hacking, and reverse engineering of Sonic games. Local guru, Link, decided to take that a step further, and delve into Sonic the Hedgehog, for Xbox 360.
What he found was certainly interesting.
In addition to many nifty tweaks, such as tweaking Tails’ gameplay to not suck, he made a single key discovery; one the likes of which hadn’t been seen in a Sonic game for years beforehand. Continue reading Sonic 06 Unearthed
Every year, the American comic book book industry holds a “Free Comic Book Day”, in which over a dozen major and minor publishes send full comics to participating comic book stores across the nation, to be given out for free. The comics tend to be standalone stories.
This year, Sonic the Hedgehog joins many other comics, with his own 22 page entry, written by fan favorite writer Ian Flynn, drawn by artist Tracy Yardley!, with a cover by long time cover artist Patrick Spaziente. Continue reading Sonic comic available during FCBD, today!
A new banner created by Sega Europe displays Blaze and a brand new Raccoon character, both set to appear in Sonic Rush Adventure.
The Sonic Stadium posted the banner last night upon finding the image, but has since removed it on Sega’s request. The image was curiously leaked somehow from the European offices and had yet to be approved by the Japanese branch. We apologise to our readers for stripping our content, but in return Sega will exclusively reveal details of the brand new raccoon character when they are ready to surface. A member of the Sonic Stadium Message Board has dug up a new trademark filed by SEGA on April 2nd 2007, for a product titled “Sonic Rush Adventure”. SEGA neither confirmed or denied such a project when we contacted them this morning.
Sonic Rush was revered as the best Sonic game of recent years when it was released on Nintendo DS in 2005, but it was largely ignored for its home console flop Shadow the Hedgehog instead. This trademark, using a similar name, suggests that a sequel is perhaps in the works. Considering the insane popularity of the DS handheld worldwide, that’s probably not a bad idea.
It is worth pointing out that many trademarks taken out by companies with the best intentions of releasing it as a product end up cancelled or the result of stillborn ideas. Judging by the nature of the title itself, SEGA could even be taking out a trademark to protect the ‘Sonic Rush’/’Sonic Adventure’ name from potential unauthorised games from other companies. So there is a chance that this could turn out to be nothing.
But hey, if it does… more wonderful 2.5D platforming may await us. Many thanks to super sleuth Keiji Dragon from SSMB for the tip. You can view the trademark for yourself here.
SEGA are getting ready to announce a new NiGHTS Into Dreams game for the Nintendo Wii, it has been reported. Gaming website SPOnG.com first revealed the information, where it writes that SEGA all but confirmed ‘NiGHTS 2’, yet wasn’t prepared to state this on the record.
Before SPOnG’s article, the Official Nintendo Magazine in the UK printed a teaser image in their current issue that has been rumoured to be a reference to NiGHTS. The magazine stated that it was a secret project to be revealed next month, but fears and doubts were raised when it was made clear this was to co-incide with April Fools Day. Remember the blue Sonic Team branded SEGA Dreamcast released in Japan back in the day? Svend managed to grab the blue VMU that went with it but has yet to get the console rarity. It’s something he incessantly mutters when he strolls into TSS Towers.
SEGA Germany is launching a contest to co-incide with the launch of Sonic and the Secret Rings over there, and the prizes are enough to trigger a fatal relapse. Open to German fans and extended to visitors of SEGA Europe’s official Sonic City Blognik, one lucky fan could win a Nintendo Wii decorated with the Sonic Team logo! If you’ve been reading many gaming websites or magazines (here and here) lately, you’d be forgiven for thinking that SEGA/THQ and plenty of reputable magazines had confirmed a PC release of Sonic the Hedgehog 06.
Fan ‘theshadowofsonic’ wrote to SEGA Europe asking when the PC version may be released after realising it hadn’t hit store shelves. Both a Finnish magazine and Finnish store website had stated 28th Feb 2007 as the release date, with the former saying it was confirmed by SEGA.
The response received, as many SSMB’ers probably know by now, was as follows:
“I’m afraid that at this time there are no plans for a PC version of Sonic the Hedgehog. I have seen this advertised on a few sites but I’m afraid that the information is not accurate.” Continue reading Sonic ’06: PC Release Confusion
Sonic and the Secret Rings appears to be doing what Sonic 06 wasn’t – selling. Being the first Nintendo Wii game in a good month or so, it makes sense that pre-orders for the game last week helped the game storm to the top of the Wii Charts in UK GAME stores before it had even been released.
That streak looks set to continue, as the official UK Software Charts sees the latest Sonic game hit #5 in the Top 10. This is especially good news considering the Top 4 – Final Fantasy XII, Crackdown, The Sims 2 Seasons and (especially) FIFA 07 aren’t going to budge anytime soon.
If you’re still sitting on the fence as to whether to get Sonic and the Secret Rings or not, check TSS’ Review to get the full lowdown on the game.
Thanks to SSMB’er “Shahra The Genie” for the tip.
It wouldn’t be unkind to say that Secret Rings didn’t exactly get the biggest buzz in the Sonic fanbase. After getting stung with Sonic 06, which was claimed to be a glorious return to the franchise, it’s only understandable that everyone was taking an extra step back with this one. But as time went on, curiosity rose and now many people are betting their lives on Sonic and the Secret Rings being the ultimate Sonic game that everyone should own. So, is it?
The story isn’t your typical Sonic-goes-after-Robotnik gig. After falling asleep reading the ‘Arabian Nights’ tale, Sonic is beckoned by a genie spirit called Shahra. She explains to Sonic that some purple git called Erazor Djinn is wrecking the pages of the Arabian Nights book and re-writing the story to his own design. So ol’ bluey gets warped into the classic book, equipped with a ring to call on Shahra’s power whenever he has a wish he needs granting. Insert obligatory “She can grant me a wish, hurr hurr” quip here.
The graphics certainly show off Sonic’s character and style, even in a different world.
From then on you’re hurtled into the game. There are seven worlds to complete, each containing 12 missions that unlock themselves as you progress from one stage to another. You will need to clear certain missions to continue the story, and Secret Rings holds a refreshingly non-linear method of play – even though you work through the seven worlds in order, you may jump back from one to another and back again as part of the storyline.
The graphics certainly look the part for a Wii game. Sonic’s looking the best he’s probably been for years – the long stilty legs are no more, he’s been shortened a little bit, and his model is altogether much better, despite lacking the polygons of the “ultra 1-million poly look at me” stoat that featured on the XBOX 360. The colours aren’t quite your primary colour fare usually associated with Sonic games; to coincide with the theme/element of fire, everything seems to be coloured with a warmer tone. Perfect for Summer. It might not be to everyone’s tastes, but it certainly suits the mood the game is trying to create.
The cut scenes we’ve mentioned before are 2D still-frame animations, which are better characterised and command more atmosphere than non-CG cutscenes in Sonic Heroes and Sonic 06. On top of this, the music is also of a very Arabian style, along with cheesy rock being the order of the day. It’ll annoy those who don’t like nonsensical lyrics in their Sonic games, but if you forego that then stages like Evil Foundry will certainly keep you pumping and on your toes. Just don’t feel tempted to talk about ‘Rocking the Place’. You know ‘no-one can touch this’.
The Wii House is nice. A little semi-detached house in London, it’s essentially a marketing apartment by Nintendo for their latest console. Today, SEGA took over, with playable demos of Sonic and the Secret Rings plus a rare visit from Director Yojiro Ogawa (more on our interview with the Ogawa of Power soon).
We played the first two stages of what essentially is the final version of the game. Sand Oasis is as you all have seen it in screenshots – Sonic dashes through a desert with platforms over streams and spikes. Dinosaur Jungle has Sonic running through caverns, being chased by Triceratops and facing a massive purple dino trying to eat your face off. Nice.
Control of Sonic is simple really. The blue blur is constantly going; you simply tilt the Wii remote left or right to move the hedgehog the corresponding direction. Pressing ‘2’ will make him jump, while holding the button down can make you leap higher. This will come at a cost though – Sonic slows down, and if you’re running at full pelt you’ll need to hold the button down real early to brake in time to make the jump. Enemies can be attacked by flicking the remote forward when a red target surrounds them. Button ‘1’ halts Sonic and can be used to cancel a charging jump, while holding the remote backwards can make Sonic do a moonwalk to pick up medals and items you just missed.
Enough about what you know already, what don’t you know? Well, the cutscenes are very artistic. The intro movie is your obligatory CG Sonic intro, with cheesy rock and great graphics. Inbetween levels, you’re going to see these kinds of storyboard scenes (see above). This one is after Sand Oasis, where you meet King Shahryar only to find it’s Dr. Eggman.
The voice acting isn’t nearly as annoying in this game. Probably because you’re too busy trying to engage in the game, but perhaps because the dialogue is that much more sharp. In-game voices aren’t always telling you to do this, that or the other like in Sonic Heroes – although Sonic’s guardian fairy Shahra does say to Sonic “it’ll be cooler inside” on Sand Oasis. Followed by Sonic replying with “Eh, are you sure about that?” after seeing flamethrowers on the floors and ceiling.
Speaking of which, the difficulty in this game is unique for a Sonic game. We say unique because it takes some getting used to before you can really adjust to the control system. Yet it doesn’t suck royally like Sonic 06. There are times where Sonic can’t reverse effectively when you’re holding back on the remote, but besides that it’s all intuitive. There are 12 missions per stage, SEGA tell us; 6 of these must be cleared before progressing to the next level, and as you may know they all feature different challenges.
Some are level specific – Sand Oasis has an alternative mission where you cannot run into any vases. This is where it gets interesting – variations on the ‘Story Mission’ level path (or a different level path entirely) can be experienced through different missions, requiring you to keep on your toes. Dinosaur Jungle places you in an area where springs are available to send you to the next platform; in an alternative mission the springs need to be activated using timed switches. Each mission gets more difficult than the last and we’re told the later levels get very hard indeed – this is hardcore territory.
Yet despite the number of times we cacked up and fell to our death in a bottomless pit, we still managed to keep on trying the same bit over and over. You see, Sonic and the Secret Rings doesn’t have a lives system, per se. If you muff up and die, you simply restart the section again until you get it right. This can be obviously infuriating if you’re really cackhanded, but it’s a godsend (and a middle finger) to the mach-speed killathon in Sonic 06, which included the nerve to limit lives so eventually you had to restart the entire stage all over again. The difference is you want to play Secret Rings until you beat it.
The amount of unlockables appear to be vast as well. The ‘Special’ section of the game is a massive gallery of movies, illustrations and BGM from the game (and possibly Sonic’s back catalogue of 15 years) that you can earn by collecting Silver and Gold medals. SEGA weren’t kind enough to let us see any of the unlockables, but believe us when we say there are loads – there are at least ten tabs selectable at the top, with the last being ‘???’. So we’re not even given a hint as to what that is. Still, the many abilities you can earn and equip to your rings (on your finger, dirty boy) are just as cool. They include making Sonic jump higher, running faster, getting a better head start and more control when jumping.
The Party mode is a collection of 40 unlockable minigames, and although we know that Shadow, Cream, Silver and Blaze are a number of the 8 selectable characters, only Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy were available for us. Myself, IGN UK, Total Games Net and Rom from SEGA all got together for a quick bash (I was Sonic, obviously). We will be adding all the games we played to the Secret Rings Game Archive tomorrow, but here are a few examples:
“Spot! Pitch Black!” has all four characters holding torches/flashlights in the dark. Four near-identical panels slide across and players have to look at the panels with their torches and select the picture with the difference. It can range from something as silly as Knuckles with Tails ears to a minute difference in a Sonic picture that neither of us still understood what the alteration was.
“Look Up! Skydiving!” featured players falling from the top of the screen, with angel wings attached to their arms. With the Wii Remote pointing upwards, flicking the ‘mote up and down will make your character flap their wings to avoid thunderclouds on the way down. First to the goal wins.
“Seek! Edge Race!”……… That little git is back. Yes. Omochao. Only thankfully he keeps himself to aiding your Party games and this minigame. All characters are blindfolded and YOU control your associated Omochao, using the A button to direct your character through a maze full of pitfalls to the goal first.
We also managed to see the final level of Sonic and the Secret Rings – the name of which is currently being kept a secret. What we can tell you is that the difficulty curve is ramped supreme. Sonic is seen running through falling platforms in outer space, and mid-level has to survive being poisoned by noxious gas. One point sees you warped to a large room full of gas that rapidly depletes your rings – you will need the help of some of your equipped ring abilities to get out fast enough.
Another point in the final stage has Sonic running through glass in a space environment. The graphics are really gorgeous here. We only managed to find one image of it (and it’s not one we took unfortunately, it’s from a Famitsu video that ‘TBF Bri 10’ on Wikipedia snapped) so take a peek at that for the time being.
So first impressions? All looking super. Of course, whether the challenge within will be sufficient, whether it will wear thin or whether this will be another broken game remains to be seen. Although we have to say, after playing this for about two hours it looks ten times better than Sonic 06 did. We’re not saying this is your miracle game just yet, but… a Story with a decent challenge and a ‘Sonic Shuffle 2’ party mode with tons of extras. All we’re saying is keep those fingers crossed.
Sonique of Fans United for SatAM has spoken to Sonic News about the recent story of a possible Sonic movie in the works, stating that Richard Kuta’s chances of actually getting the project off the ground is slim.
“Richard Kuta is NOT a film maker. What films has he made? None. Nada, zero zip, zilch. He’s just a guy who’s been banned from almost every Sonic forum ever made who has a dream. That’s it.” Sonique said in an email. “He’s never even written anything above fanfiction.”
Interesting evidence and searching reveals no information on the animation company ‘Soloakai’ either. Sonique states that findings point to the group being makers of flash animations rather than a professional major movie production team. Our research only found the name ‘Soloakai’ on our own news reports. Continue reading Sonic Movie a Hoax? [UPDATE]
“Of course you know this means war!”
SEGA Europe has sensationally filed a lawsuit against humour website YTMND (You’re The Man Now Dog!) over jokes it contains involving Sonic the Hedgehog.
YTMND, for the uninitiated, is a website where users can create their own webpage consisting of only an image for a background and a voice clip as background music. Many trends are built on the back of this, where Star Trek’s ‘Epic Manoeuvres’ and Star Fox’s ‘Do A Barrel Roll’ being gags that has spawned countless YTMND joke pages.
The most popular of the Sonic jokes, a mickey take on the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon motto “That’s NO Good!”, involves editing the voice clip to include various random quotes from films and other cult references. Many different versions of this Sonic gag suggest furry rape or sex or some other kind of ‘NO Good!’ activity, which is likely the reason that SEGA have kicked off in such a way. Pre-ordering Sonic’s debut Wii game in the US will bag you a free wristband sporting the blue blur, according to a new promotion by retailer EBGames.com.
The website offer can also be made in ‘real life’ stores, so those who aren’t exactly web-friendly can secure one in the comfort of bricks and mortar.
The band itself features a blue line with a generic picture of Sonic on it. Might look like someone from Spain made a knock off official band, but hey, free’s free so who are we to complain? Click the link in ‘More Info’ below to hit the EBGames page.
EBGames pens Sonic and the Secret Rings for a release date of 27th February 2007, but remember that dates on a retail website are not indicative of final or official release.
Cheers to our nameless tipster who popped the news in our inbox the other day. We’d buy you a beer, but well, we won’t.
According to a scan of the back of the Sonic Riders PC manual, and Amazon.com, what Sonic Next fans without any of those newfangled consoles have been waiting for is no longer just a nice idea!
Thanks to Shadow Hog of The GHZ for pointing this out – perhaps this will bring new opportunities to fans of the new Sonic game, eh?
Simon Jeffery, head of SEGA US, recently spoke to BusinessWeek.com about what SEGA see of the future for PS2, when he dropped a potentially interesting hint about possible future Sonic titles.
The following is a excerpt from the interview.
What strategy should a software developer like Sega take?
We’re really balancing our portfolio of games for old-gen and new-gen hardware. We’re focusing our big investments on the next generation, and we’re making sure we have a balanced portfolio of kids’ games and family-oriented products and movie tie-ins. Here it is SatAM fans, the moment you’ve all been waiting for since the announcement of the SatAm box set: The box art, special features, retail price, and release date have all been revealed.
Firstly, the special features are as follows:
According to the latest monthly report from NPD Funworld, the well known video game sales tracking company, Sonic the Hedgehog was a huge bomb last month at US retail, selling a total 38,000 units throughout it’s first two weeks.
For the unlearned, these numbers are very, very bad for a series like Sonic, which can often garner anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 in it’s launch month.
Despite the ad blitz Sega put behind the game, it seems ultimately, the games poor reception from the press and gamers alike was it’s downfall. Only time will tell if it’s sales will shape up.
The Sonic Site Awards results were announced Sunday in its annual radio broadcast.
For the first time in its history, the radio show, broadcasted simultaneously on Sega Sonic Radio and Sega Games Radio, went smoothly without any problems, and the reduced number of awards meant a show which ballooned in length in recent years was comfortably under three hours this year.
After a disappointing voting turnout in 2005, SSA’s decision to require user registration is starting to bear fruit. Despite having nine less awards and half the time to vote, voting was higher than last year, at over 4,000 votes from over 600 people, many of whom used their accounts registered for last year’s SSA. Let’s face it, SONIC The Hedgehog has fought an uphill battle since the first critical impressions leaked out in early November. This, however, it seems has not managed to slow Sonic at all, with the new title reaching top ten XBox 360 sales charts in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
In the United Kingdom, SONIC The Hedgehog has fallen from it’s position in ninth place last week to a still reputable tenth place.

Just as fans of Sonic the Hedgehog had eagerly awaited the launch of Sonic’s newest high definition outing for the XBox 360, they are awaiting the Playstation 3 version in hope that SEGA has patched the coding errors in the game that managed to lessen the gameplay experience on Microsoft’s next generation console. But is the wait really that short? Online journalism website Gamespot seems to disagree.
As a rather ‘last-minute’ update to their Sonic the Hedgehog section for Playstation 3, they have changed the debut date for the Blue Blur’s Sony outing to January 30th, 2007.
Quite a kick in the bollocks for those fans whom camped out for days waiting for Sony’s newest console, however all is not lost – you could always hoard your console with videos to pass away the time. You’ve done most of the deed, now it’s time for the waiting game.
The latest Famitsu magazine has hit store shelves in Japan, and the four editors have rated Sonic the Hedgehog on XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 rather healthily.
Sonic’s latest adventure was rated on both next generation platforms and received overall scores of 30/40 and 29/40 respectively. A bit of a surprising score considering the general panning the game has had from other outlets, stranger still rating the 360 version higher than the PS3 offering.
Famitsu is regarded as the ultimate gaming tome in the land of the rising sun, and is even highly respected in Western circles. Their reviews are hyper-critical most times, and feature four writers or editors assessing the game and each giving a score out of 10. As such, games scoring 30 or higher out of a possible 40 is seen as a promising assessment. Continue reading Famitsu Scores Sonic
While avid Sonic fans are entertaining themselves with their newly acquired games for both the PSP and XBox 360, SEGA has begun to step a bit further into comsumer space to advertise these games (Sonic the Hedgehog on XBox 360 and Sonic Rivals on PSP) to a more expansive audience via Microsoft’s own advertisement network.
On the fourth of December, an agreement was signed with Microsoft to launch a theme pack for Windows Live Messenger, that allows users to easily and effectively have their conversation windows remind them of the blue blur himself.
The Head of Marketing at SEGA UK, Tina Hicks, also had a comment regarding the newly signed agreement: “We have a wide audience to reach and converse with. The MSN theme pack enables users to interact with the Sonic brand in a way that is not possible with standard online advertising or rich media, which can be a far more passive way of talking to consumers.”
From the description of the theme pack given, it sounds as if it will feature a complete Live overhaul – this, of course, includes winks, emotions, and backgrounds. A release date for the theme pack and starting date for the advertising campaign has yet to be announced.
The Sonic Site Awards‘ “Phase 2” voting phase opened Sunday night, and will close on Friday 15th December.
The Sonic Stadium’s awards ceremony, now in its fifth year, has been shortened substantially to end before Christmas, due to a busy second half of the year for the site and its staff, and the voting phase is set to last for only two weeks, resulting in lower turnout from voters than previous years.
With this in mind, the Stadium encourages anyone reading this story to tell other Sonic fans about the Awards, get others to vote for the sites and fans they think deserve awards most, and to vote themselves if they haven’t already! Voting is quick and easy through the SSA home page, and you only need a Sonic Stadium Account which is absolutely free and only takes a minute to register for. Even if you’re banned from the SSMB your account will still be able to vote.
The results of the vote will be announced during an SSA Sega Sonic Radio broadcast on Sunday 17th December. The show has had well over 60 listeners in the past, and this year is not expected to be any different.
It has arrived. After changing the formula with Sonic Heroes and getting mixed responses, the Team have gone back to basics and stuck with what works. The result is a mixture of Sonic Adventure’s town stages and level structure and Sonic Adventure 2’s involving plot lines. UK based music production studio Remix Factory have come a long long way, but you wouldn’t think that one of the main areas they’re making waves in is the Sonic community. The studio, who are all pure Sonic fans through and through, first made an impact making two remixed tracks for Shadow the Hedgehog. Continue reading TSS Interview: Return to the Remix Factory
We’ve had a look at how the main three characters will play in a general sense, but you will get to enjoy the presence of many more Sonic stars. Each hedgehog will have two ‘Amigos’ helping them out throughout the stages and within cutscenes, and they all play pretty differently.
Sonic will be followed around by Tails as per usual, and Knuckles. The two tailed fox can do his signature flying move, as he’s no longer strapped in a mech, yay! His attack involves chucking item box bombs at enemies, and a sniper style mode is available by holding down the X Button. Knuckles on the other hand can glide as always, and has his Heat Knuckle move. You will usually call on these guys whenever Sonic needs help finding a switch, because apparently the blue blur’s thick like that.
Shadow is partnered with Team Dark favourites Rouge and Omega, and just like the Team Sonic crew Shad’s extra pairs of hands retain many of their signature moves from Sonic Heroes. Omega has a lock-on feature that attack nearby enemies, while he also has a beefy Omega Launcher as a midair attack – lobbing bombs in the face of Iblis for maximum pain. Rouge glides like always, and like Tails has a bomb move – it’s similar to that used in Sonic Battle, really. Play is switched to Rouge to find items – Kingdom Valley has you looking for three keys, in the only throwback to the SA2 days. Omega comes into force as backup for Shadow, so you’ll be using him in moments involving a lot of firepower. He’s also a bit of a dab hand when helping Shadow out in a boss battle.
Finally, Silver has Blaze and Amy Rose tagging along. In a rather interesting addition to the ‘canon’ game series, Blaze makes her first entrance to the console platform, so we get to understand a bit about her background and why she’s in the future with Shadow instead of that other dimension like in Sonic Rush. Blaze is about the best Amigo character to work with, as all of her Sonic Rush moves have translated well into 3D. She has an attack move which sees her launching at her opponents, but as a midair attack it works similar to Sonic’s homing attack. Amy finds Silver, and – yes, AGAIN – mistakes him for Sonic. Which is how she gets involved in all this mess. Amy has her trusty hammer, but she can only use it on a standstill and aside from a double jump, doesn’t really have much in the way of defence. At all.
Achievables also come back in Sonic the Hedgehog with a vengeance. Medals are awarded for completing levels, achieving special conditions in Soleanna and earning ‘S’ ranks in Action Stages. There’s a total of 5 Gold Medals per Action Stage, two for completing them in normal and hard, two for ‘S’ ranks and one for collecting silver medals within the stage. Sonic the Hedgehog aims to be a challenge for the hardened fan, if only to clear the Achievements list on your 360 and begin boasting.
