“Special Reveal” At the SXSW 25th Anniversary Panel

sxswssonicpanel

A few days ago we brought you news that there would be a very special panel at the SXSW 2016 convention.

Well since then, there’s been a number of developments, the first major detail is that the event will now be live-streamed via twitch. However the more interesting detail is that according to the SXSW website, there will be a ‘special reveal’ as part of the panel for the anniversary celebrations.

What will this special reveal be? Well we know for certain that it’s not going to be a game. However with Yuji Naka being present along with Iizuka, you can’t blame fans for speculating it might be something important.

Freak-Out Friday: Segata Sanshiro, SEGA’s Greatest Hero

Consider this Freak-Out Friday a history lesson in gaming, one that dates back to the bygone era of the mid-1990s.

What’s that? “This doesn’t have anything to do with Sonic the Hedgehog,” you say?

You fools.

What you are about to bear witness to has everything to do with Sonic. In fact, this is about something much, much bigger than Sonic, for had it not been for this man, the Blue Blur — no, SEGA as a whole — would not be around today.

New Sonic Podcast & E-tail Store Coming Soon?

Continuing with the Toy Fair news comes a tiny bit of information about a previously unannounced thing.

According to a sign at Tomy’s booth at the New York Toy Fair, there is a new Sonic Podcast in the words to be broadcast via Podcast One.

But even more interesting is that it looks like Sega/Tomy might be launching a new Sonic themed online store. This is strange because Sega did launch Sonic Merchandise several years ago which is still trading at this time.

No other details were given, but we’ll keep you upto date as and when more information comes in.

Sony’s Sonic Movie Delayed To 2018

SonicMovie

Hajime Satomi, President and CEO of SEGA Sammy Holdings, may have just dropped word that Sony Pictures’ upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been pushed back to 2018.

In an interview with The Worldfolio, Satomi speaks of the future entertainment prospects and strategies of the company, where he briefly touches upon the upcoming feature film. This is the first time there’s been official word on its progress since the reveal two years ago.

On the innovation angle, what kind of next-generation concepts are Sega Sammy working on?

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

Announced in 2014, the movie is envisioned as a live action/animated hybrid, similar to other popular cinematic reimaginings of classic franchises such as “The Smurfs” or “Alvin and the Chipmunks”. Animation will be supplied by Marza Animation Planet, who have provided various CG opening for Sonic and other SEGA franchises in the past.

[UPDATE] SEGA: Something Coming up in February & Other Hints!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBIgXhiOpeQ

Here at The Number 1 Sonic Stadium Detective Agency, the finest minds have been combing through some of the most recent clues to try and decipher some of the recent clues and hints left by the Sonic social media outlets in order to try and figure out what Sega is upto.

osborne1

Using state of the art computers and decryption techniques we’ve spent sheer minuets trying to crack and decipher Sega’s hints. Well Detective TSS & Detective SSMB have spent all night trying to break, when suddenly over coffee and doughnuts we finally cracked it, here are our results.

[Update 20/01] – Laying the Breadcrumbs

He’s at it again. Sonic’s Tumblr has posted even more cryptic hints! Attached to a seemingly innocent breakfast post, we at The Number 1 Sonic Stadium Detective Agency have uncovered startling new evidence toward an upcoming reveal. You can examine the new clue below:

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 21.34.42

  • Compares the anticipation of an upcoming reveal to a delicious seven layer bean dip.
  • He’s laying out all the hints like a trail of breadcrumbs so all the “flavours” can come together one day.
  • If you follow the breadcrumbs, who knows what you’ll discover in the coming weeks…?

And now, back to our original findings.

February Announcement?

Yesterday, Sega posted to their Sonic Tumblr account, and it had some interesting tags.

feburaryannouncement

  • We have something coming up in February that some of you will be interested in.
  • But we can’t talk about it yet.
  • Don’t tell anyone you saw this hint in the Tumblr tags – okay?

Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone. So it seems that Sega will be announcing something in February, when could this be? I’d bet the farm around February 2nd, Groundhog Day, or Hedgehog Day as Sega calls it. Just under two weeks away.

Cracking the secret code

Just under a week ago, the Sonic Tumblr account posted an image of a comic book which contained the following sequence of numbers in a single tag.

tumblrcode

  • 12356789023456789016

We ran this code through our super detective computer, and we made a discovery, the code is in fact 3 different sequences, all missing a number, all broken up the number 0. When we extract those sequences we see the following.

  • 12356789
  • 23456789
  • 16

Let’s take a look at the first sequences, you’ll notice that in the first code, the number 4 is missing. Then in the second the number 1 is missing. Finally… we end with 16.

Put it together we get this.

4/1/16

Which is the US date for April 1st 2016. What does this mean? It means that on April 1st 2016, things will happen! What kind of things!?

The Pumpkin Clue

dracula sonic pumpkin

About two months ago the Sonic Tumblr account posted this image along with the following tags. We have highlighted the important bits using our special ‘detective highlighters.’

pumpkindescription

Let’s extract those statements.

  • There’s something very special about this art.
  • We hid details on the next Sonic game on the inside of the pumpkin
  • It’s not about what you see… it’s about who created it.
  • Someday we’re going to come back to it.

What could this mean? Well we have a theory, the details are hidden on the inside of the pumpkin, and what is on the side of a pumpkin… let’s take a look…

pumpkin

Seeds and… PULP! Pumpkin pulp! The next Sonic game will be…. A Pumpkin Juice sales simulator game!

Conclusion

detective

In February there will be an announcement, almost certainly on ‘Hedgehog day’ which has become a traditional place for Sonic related announcements. And there will probably be something on April 1st, perhaps a Pumpkin juice simulator game, with Big the Cat. Because Big the Cat.

With Batman DLC! And an eye patch!

Until next time, Detective TSS & SSMB will keep investigating.

Sega Reveals New 25th Anniversary Details “Branded Events & New Style Guides”

25thanversaryadvert1

In the newest issue of ToyWorld Magazine, Sega have posted a new advert for Sonic’s 25th featuring Classic, Modern and Boom Sonic together along with another version of the 25th anniversary logo.

The advert is there to advertise licensing enquiries so don’t jump to conclusions just yet about this being Sonic Generations 2 or some other big clue as to a new game announcement, even though it’s very tempting.

However, in the same issue there are also a bunch of details about Sega’s 2016 plans including one or two details which we didn’t yet know, and one or two interesting choices of words which I know some people are going to go crazy at, you can decide for yourself if that’s the good or bad crazy.

25thdetails

Most of the information is already known, again Boom the TV show is doing very well with plans to expand into Russia, Spain and Turkey in the near future, as well as more partners joining the Sonic Boom toy/merchandise line.

However the more interesting part is that the ‘Classic Sonic’ is described as ‘Pixel Sonic’ and Archies Sonic is now ‘Comic Book Sonic.’ However I wouldn’t take those definitions too seriously since this is information for people who are not too familiar with the brand.

Bioworld, Archie Comics and First 4 Figures are all named as being brands who will be supporting the 25th anniversary, products include, toys, publishing, clothing and even ‘limited edition collectibles’ and Sega are looking to expand on this list.

Now for the VERY interesting part. The final part of the article states the following.

2016 will be a a celebration of Sonic’s 25th birthday throughout the year. New Style Guides and new collaborations across toy, gift apparel, branded events and bespoke retail events initiatives will be on offer throughout the year.

Did you spot it?

  • Celebration throughout 2016
  • New Style Guides.
  • Branded Events.

The first significant detail is that the whole year will be a celebration, not just the summer or when a game is due out, so at any time Sega could announce something.

What is a style guide? In this context, it means one of two things, the most likely thing, is that Sega are going to be ensuring that all Sonic merch for the 25th anniversary follows a set pattern, so all merchandise packaging looks similar, it helps customers identify the product and allows for a set standard.

You can see the 2014 style guide on TSS as it happens.

Now… and this is less likely, it may also mean that some characters have had some minor or major (major is unlikely) design changes, it might be very subtle, but noticeable.

The second thing is branded events, could this mean the return of Sonic Boom for the US and Summer of Sonic for the UK? Or even the day Sonic decided to go to Mercedes Benz World a few years ago.

We’ll keep you upto date with more news as we get it.

Sonic Adventure Music Event and more announced at the Sonic Appreciation Festival 2015

Sonic Appreciation Festival

As reported earlier, in Japan a Sonic fan event called the Sonic Appreciation Festival just took place and recently wrapped up. Special guests included series producer Takashi Iizuka, character artist and designer Yuji Uekawa, and composers Jun Senoue and Tomoya Ohtani. In the event, several announcements were made, while not of a new game, were still notable.

First and possibly most notable is the announcement of an upcoming concert called the Sonic Adventure Music Festival, which will be held on April 2nd, 2016 at the Future Seven venue in Japan.

Another announcement was that Jun Senoue is working on a new album called “The Works II”. This will be released on February 24th, 2016 in Japan.

A third announcement was that Sega will be holding another concert called the Symphony Sega Concert, which will be held on July 17th, 2016 in Japan also.

Finally on a minor note, it’s been reconfirmed that Sticks and the Deadly Six will be featured in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which is also reconfirmed to launch on 3DS again on February 18th, 2016 in Japan. The Arcade version was also shown off but no info has surfaced, if anything new was shared of that version in particular. And once again there was no word of the Wii U version.

TSSZ has rounded up lots of pictures from the event right here.

I wish to thank SSF1991 aka Donnie at TSSZ, Sonic News Channel and BlueParadox on twitter, and Woun on our own forum for rounding up and delivering the announcement on their respective sites.

Japanese Sonic Fan event to take place at JOYPOLIS, Tokyo

271215eventJapanese Sonic the Hedgehog fans will once again be treated to another Sonic fan event, due to take place at the SEGA JOYPOLIS theme park in Odaiba, Tokyo on Sunday, 27th of December, 2015.

The event, similar to those that have taken place at this venue in the past, will include appearances from Takashi Iizuka, Yuji Uekawa, Tomoya Ohtani and Jun Senoue, and a musical performance. For the first time, a cosplay contest will take place, which will require entrants to submit their photo applications prior to the event in order to be selected for the finals which will take place on stage at the event.

2015: The Year of the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter Account

HaveUEver

Today saw the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account featured on prolific internet social media hub Buzzfeed.

For those who aren’t connected to the Twitterverse, you will have missed the rather spectacular recent awakening of the account, which gained a new level of sentience this year. In among it’s now self-awareness of the sizable collection of Sonic the Hedgehog internet memes, the account also called out several big name commentators and competitors this year, including Nintendo, and was temporarily taken over by Doctor Eggman for a day (although we’re sure we’ve heard that voice somewhere else before). Needless to say this has caused several internet-breaking moments, so much so it has caught the attention of many media outlets.

The account has even received an endorsement from Sonic the Hedgehog creator Naoto Oshima:

TwitterOshimaSanWe at TSS salute the Sonic Twitter account and crafty creatures on the media team running it (including a certain Aaron Webber!), and we can’t wait for the next post!

Gotta go fatsr.

New Crush 40 album in the works for 2016

4563CRUSH40 fans who follow the official Johnny Gioeli facebook page will have noticed a recent surge in activity as Mr. Gioeli has become more involved its running.

During a recent Q&A post, Johnny hinted that a new Crush40 album is being worked on, and is due for launch next year. The album will be the band’s second studio album (and the first in over a decade), and would follow the band’s recent success through the release of two live albums, a “best of” and an EP in 2012.

In the wake of several live shows in the US, Japan, and Mexico, Johnny alluded to potential live shows in 2016. Although it is currently unclear as to whether or not any of the tracks featured on the new album will be connected to future Sonic the Hedgehog titles, it has lead many to speculate as to the correlation of the album release with the 25th anniversary celebrations.

Stay tuned for more information as it comes to light!

Sonic the Hedgehog: Awakening Found on Ex-Silver VA Resume

Sonic the Hedgehog Awakening Pete Capella

The Sonic Stadium has discovered a mysterious Sonic listing on the resume of former Silver the Hedgehog voice actor Pete Capella. The title is Sonic the Hedgehog: Awakening by SEGA Inc and Capella again did voice work for Silver the Hedgehog in it. Unfortunately, that’s all we know, as there don’t appear to be any other signs of the project online. Capella voiced Silver between 2006 and 2009, so it’s pretty safe to assume this title (whatever it is) is dead and buried.

If we find any more details, we’ll let you know.

Sega to Attend Hamleys Toy Parade

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W02eseUycM

Sega Europe’s community manager just announced via Sega Central that Sega are going to be at the Hamleys toy parade this Saturday in London.

Never heard of this event before?

Well you know how in the US there’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade? Just think that only more toy focused, Regent Street is closed for the day as various characters and mascots dance through the streets along with Father Christmas coming to spread the Christmas cheer.

And Sega is going to be there!

No details were given out as to what they will be doing, just that ‘There will be a few surprises,’ they also didn’t say which of their franchises would be getting promoted, however my money is on Sonic, simply because to my knowledge, Sega doesn’t have any other character mascots/costumes aside from Sonic, also with the Sonic Boom toyline expanding, it just seems like it can’t be anything but Sonic.

We’ll keep you updated with more information as and when we get it.

If you’re able to be in Regent Street (London) this Saturday, be sure to let us know and take lots of pics and be the hero we deserve and need.

Check Out Crush 40’s Awesome Performance at Youmacon 2015!

Hanging on the edge of tomorrow, from the works of yesterday!

Crush 40 as we know them today has been gracing our ears since “Open Your Heart” in 1998’s Sonic Adventure, and set a new standard for music throughout the following line of Sonic the Hedgehog games – nearly every main Sonic title released since the Dreamcast era has been accompanied with a memorable theme tune of some sort. Most popularly, fans of both the band and the series would immediately think of “Live and Learn” from Sonic Adventure 2, “What I’m Made Of” from the final boss battle against the Metal Overlord in Sonic Heroes, or even “Knight of the Wind” from Sonic and the Black Knight, all performed by vocalist Johnny Gioeli, and Sonic music composer-slash-guitarist Jun Senoue.

The duo have performed at a number of fan venues over the years, namely the Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom conventions, but most recently, the pair was confirmed to perform live at the recent Youmacon in Detroit. While awesome news, a good many were understandably bummed at missing such a wonderful opportunity to see them live.

Until today!

IXI! Studios of Toronto, Canada travelled to the Detroit convention and managed to capture an hour of footage from Crush 40’s Youmacon show! Rock out to a plethora of classic Sonic tunes and miss their concert no longer through the video below!

While at Youmacon 2015, the convention-hopping IXI! Studios (who have travelled to previous MAGFests, ConBravos, and Anime Norths among others) have also managed to film the Team Four Star panel (including the premiere of the new Dragon Ball Z Abridged episode, parodying the movie Super Android 13), the two Little Kuriboh Q&As (Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged episode 65 premiere, Secret Panel), and the Elite 3 panel featuring the Pokémon ‘Bridged 23 debut.
