Production of the ESP Sonic the Hedgehog Guitar

Last year saw some very high-end pieces of merchandise produced to celebrate Sonic’s 20th Anniversary (including statues, crystal cubes…even pocket watches!), but by far one of the most desirable objects offered were reproductions of Jun Senoue’s signature Sonic the Hedgehog ESP guitar. The guitars are now in full production, and Senoue-san has been to the ESP factory to oversee production!

An Hour of Eggman: Interview with Mike Pollock

We love Mike Pollock, the voice of Doctor Eggman and many other characters throughout the world of animation; some of you may have spotted Mike wandering around at Summer of Sonic last year and will know how awesome this guy is!

The guys over at DeNomHat caught up with Mike recently in this hour-long interview, where they talk everything from inspirations to voice acting and careers in animation.

Check it out above!

FINAL SEGASonic:Radio Livecast: Sunday, 3PM GMT

SEGASonic: Radio, TSS’ livestream of 24/7 Sonic the Hedgehog music, will unfortunately be closing it’s doors on Sunday for some much needed renovation. The station has been in a state of gradual deterioration for some time, with shows becoming increasingly intermittent and scarce, mostly due to other (mostly real-world) obligations of the DJs.

Crush 40 Currently Working on New Songs

Last year saw Crush 40 release a one-off single Song of Hope dedicated to the Japanese Tsunami disaster victims, which was the first new non-Sonic themed track since those that featured on  Super Sonic Songs back in 2009. Many fans have been keen to see Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli team up once more in order to produce a full-blown Crush 40 album, the likes of which have not been seen since their self-titled album back in 2003 (which was a re-working of their album Thrill of the Feel from way back in 2000 when they went by the name ‘Sons of Angels’).

However, it looks increasingly like a new Crush 40 album may be in the works, with Senoue posting a teasing image on facebook and twitter with the statement:

“Just want to let you know the name of the songs we are currently working on. Yes, new Crush 40 songs! “

The new tracks look set to be titled Rise Again, One of Those Days, and Sonic Youth – the latter appears to give a nod to the Sonic Adventure title tracks, with the opening verses of “I’ve opened my heart, I’ve lived and learned”.

Hopefully we will have more information on any potential future releases very soon!

To Be Remembered For Generations: Goodbye 2011!

We all certainly expected a lot from SEGA for a 20th anniversary year, most of us were really taken by surprise by the massive torrent of treats that had been prepared for the end of Sonic’s second decade.

Ken Balough Drops the First Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Hint

Earlier today, Ken Balough of SEGA of America released the first cryptic clue to Sonic the Hedgehog 4:Episode 2. In his post on the SEGA forums, Balough wrote:

If you’re an Episode II fan
I would go back to where the Sonic 4 Campaign first began
In a month filled with presents and Christmas hams
think of the day, the HMS Warrior first swam

Current theory is that this likely pertains to the date of December the 29th, the date on which a British ironclad warship under the name of HMS Warrior was launched in 1860. “Where the first Sonic 4 Campaign began” may relate to the SEGA blogs, where the first Episode 1 trailer was posted.  The riddle appears to yield no clue on the details of what the game may contain – we will be sure to bring you the details as soon as they come!

Have any theories of your own? Let us know in the comments!

Sonic Generations Statue Room Codes

A few weeks ago we posted about the secret Statue Room that is accessable in Sonic Generations by holding down select while in the Collection Room. The UK Sonic Generations site hints at codes being available from Marks & Spencer, but as of this point there has been no indication to how these are obtained.

According to Hogfather on the SSMB, the codes are printed on particular merchandise tags e.g. on T-Shirts and pants tags.

If you haven’t already scoured the internet to get the hacked codes (because that’s cheating, isn’t it?), then don’t worry, because the Japanese Generations site has begun to give out some of these codes!

The site allows access to codes for classic and modern Sonic and Tails, as well as Modern Eggman, while giving links to other codes or directions to items that need to be purchased to gather the other codes such as games magazines.

As many have already guessed, it does look like you will have to buy items in order to procure some of these codes . Maybe looking on the internet might be cheaper on your wallet…

Anyway, for those who don’t fancy clicking all the links, here are some of the codes that have been found so far:

JAPAN SITE:
Classic Sonic: 171 045

Classic Tails: 359 236
Modern Eggman: 613 282
Modern Sonic: 204 390
Modern Tails: 632 951
Sonic’s Friend’s: 249 651

MARKS & SPENCERS:
283 015

SONIC 20TH ANNIVERSARY OST:
507-376

Fleetway’s Sonic the Comic Set For Re-Release

TSSZ News have reported on the emerging of the possibility that the original Sonic stories, which first appeared in the UK based Fleetway Sonic the Comic will be re-published in the near future.

Joe Schumaker from the Sonic Zone has recently posted on the site with regards to recent communications between himself and SEGA. The Sonic Zone, which until recently hosted the comics online, have now removed all the comics from their site in order to prevent damage to any future sales.  However, many fans will be pleased with the potential prospect of seeing these classic stories, first seen way back in 1993, hitting the shelves once more.

However, no details are currently available as to when and how these comics will be published. We will, as always, keep you updated!

Jun Senoue’s Guitars at ESP

Many of you will know and recognise some of Jun Senoue‘s signature custom guitars – most notably the Sonic guitar that has visited two Summer of Sonic events (and some of you have been honoured enough to hold!). The Sonic guitar is but one of many guitars in Senoue-san’s arsenal of axes, and you can now check all of these out on ESP Guitar’s Japanese site.

The lineup includes the George Lynch custom with the Nascar-esque decals that has featured throughout the early days of Crush 40 and on many album inserts, to the 24-fret Shadow “tattoo” guitar that helped bring the heavier tones to the Shadow the Hedgehog title.

The site also includes videos taken at the Crush 40 live in Tokyo gigs.

Check out the guitars here!

[UPDATE: TOTAL AND WINNER!] GreenAid: Donate For A Chance To Win A F4F 20th Anniversary Statue!

[UPDATE:]

Over the period of the last week we have raised a massive £530 (about $800US) for Dan Green! We at the Sonic Stadium would like to convey our utmost gratitude to all those who donated – this is an absolutely fantastic contribution!

[END OF UPDATE]

Earlier this week we were informed of the sad news regarding the passing Dan Green‘s wife. Dan has contributed substantially to the voice acting community, notably providing voices for cartoons such as Yugioh – you will most likely remember him as the voice of Knuckles the Echidna from 2005-2010.

Our good friend Mike Pollock, who many of you might have run into at Summer of Sonic, has set up the Dan Green Guestbook through which you can send a message of condolence, or donate (there’s also an address to send cards or fan art or any other small physical letters).

We at Sonic Stadium would like to rally the entire Sonic community to contribute in order to assist Dan and his new born children through a very difficult time – and we want your help too! Sign the Dan Green Guestbook

Many of you will know and love Dan Green for the many characters he has bring to life through his voice acting career across many different mediums – most notably voicing Knuckles the Echidna in recent years.

Unfortunately, Dan’s wife has passed away after giving birth to their twins last week. We here at the Sonic Stadium would like to extend our utmost sympathies at this time to Dan and his family in this tragic loss.

We call upon you, Sonic fans, to visit the Dan Green Guestbook. Here, you can donate to help Dan take care of his daughter and son. Even if you cannot spare anything monetary, spare a thought, leave Dan a message on the page, and show him the love and support he has from his many fans.

Thank you.

Sonic Snap! Contest: Runner Up Entries and Winner

At the beginning of October we set the challenge for you guys and gals to get your cameras out to recreate your favourite scene from the Sonic Universe in order to win a Sonic 20th Anniversary statue kindly donated by SEGA Europe for the launch of Sonic Generations. We gave few prerequisites for entry besides the image could not be digitally enhanced; other than that, complete creative licence was given…and what a range of entries we received!

We had nearly 100 entries with a whole host of original ideas, but unfortunately we can’t show them all – instead we’ve lined up some of the highlights from the pictures that were submitted, along with the winning entry. The winner was selected by the staff writers and SSMB staff…and believe us when I say this was the toughest competition we’ve ever had to judge! Although not everyone can be a winner – you should all be proud of your creations!

So, on with our runner up entries!

CONTEST RUNNER UP ENTRIES

Joshua M sent us in this picture perfect photo of Sonic wading through an autumnal Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic & Knuckles – we love the execution of the shot and the craftsmanship of this home-made Sonic. Nice one Josh!

Sterling C has produced a striking scene of the Egg Carrier coming into shot, with a smoke machine or a dry ice machine giving us the impression we are flying through the skies in Sonic Adventure. Complete with Lego Egg carrier we love how this pic really captures the vibe of the moment!

We’re feeling a chill coming on from Rio H’s entry! Sonic and Tails square off with the Ice Cap Zone mini boss from Sonic the Hedgehog 3…in his freezer! The cute characters really make this scene and we love how you thought outside of the box (and inside your fridge freezer!).

Now here’s a “way past cool” entry from Donna M! Donna has reproduced the ending scene from the opening titles of SatAM Sonic in the surroundings of nature with a host of amazingly detailed and expertly crafted paper children. We’re really impressed with this one…even if Antoine isn’t!

Mark H’s entry is a piece of cake! No, really, it is! Dubbed “City Escake”, Mark has given Sonic Adventure 2’s infamous opening level a delicious background…maybe he will send us some pieces to eat?

Although it’s not 2012 quite yet, Matthew P is already warming up for the Olympics! Luigi races Shadow in the 100 metre hurdles, in a scene from Mario and Sonic at the Olympics…hopefully their thumbs and arms aren’t too sore from all that button bashing and arm flailing!

It looks like Sonic has got that sinking feeling in Kelsey G’s entry! Here Sonic is taking a float around Kelsey’s fishbowl (hope the fish are ok!) which has been transformed into the Labyrinth Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 1. We love the attention to detail like the jaws and the orbanaut in the background!

Logan H and friend have teamed up as Espio the Chameleon and Charmy the Bee to form a scene from Knuckles Chaotix. We love the outfits and the attention to detail in the costumes which obviously took a lot of time and effort to create. Now, go back inside before you catch a C-HOLD! [Yeah, a bad pun…I know! –T].

Wow! What’s not to love about this City Escape playset complete with Gun track, board, dash pad and Chao in Space 2 poster! Beautifully and painstakingly crafted work from Kieran B...we all want one now to play with! Maybe Jazwares have a job opening?

I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly! Ciara T takes us to Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with Sonic and Tails in paperchild form, skimming over a sea of mecha mac…and yes, that is actually made of jelly!

You won’t look at Sonic and the Secret Rings the same way again thanks to Will P and Luke G, with their rendition of the end scene from this Wii title. We have already used a mountain of tissues wiping away our tears here in the office! Great spirit there guys (or should that be great genie?).

SonikkuForever made us laugh and laugh with this entry, recreating the infamous “My hat is on fire!” scene from the Sonic OVA movie. A very, very simple idea, perfectly executed with an extremely original use of materials. We adore the totally outrageous and quirky character design that really captures the zany moment. Well done! [and keep away from my hat – T].

Finally, Dan B gives us a fantastic replica of the Big Arms battle from the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, created from papier-mâché. Incredibly detailed characters with simple-but-effective backdrops make this one of the most stunning entries we received. This entry just missed out on “grabbing” the prize [Yeah, I know, I’ll show myself out –T].

CONTEST WINNER

As we said before it was so incredibly hard to pick a victor from the entries we received, but in the end we decided this entry really deserved top prize. So without further ado…

CONGRATULATIONS MICHAEL S! You are the VERY lucky recipient of an exceedingly exclusive Sonic 20th Anniversary Statue!

All of the judge were blown away by this incredibly unique entry, created using layers of acetate and card to project the image of the familiar classic scene of Green Hill Zone. The execution of the imagine is spot-on thanks to the lovingly crafted pieces which produce an amazing result giving phenomenal depth, vibrant colour and an overall spectacular result. Many congratulations go out to you, and your well-deserved prize will be winging its way to you shortly!

Commiserations to all our other entrants who didn’t win a prize this time, but give yourself a pat on the back – the calibre of the entries was outstanding, and we hope that it will only get better in the future! Don’t forget there will be plenty more goodies to snag in the near future on TSS and SEGASonic: Radio’s Project 24 (news about that real soon folks!).

Let us know all about your favourite entries out of our featured entries in the comment box too…we might have a little something lined up for the most commented on entry as well!

Sonic Snap! Win A First4Figures 20th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog Statue!

Oh boy, do we have a competition for you this month!

We don’t know about you, but we are all incredibly excited here at TSS after seeing all of the new footage of the stages available in Sonic Generations! To celebrate twenty years of Sonic the Hedgehog and the impending release of Sonic Generations, the Sonic Stadium has teamed up with SEGA to bring you an incredible competition!

The good folks at SEGA Europe have kindly given us an ultra-exclusive First 4 Figures 20th Anniversary Sonic statue and one very, VERY lucky person will be walking away with this awesome piece of merchandise – you can’t buy these in the shops (and they go for a fortune on ebay) so this is your chance to bag an awesome item of memorabilia!

So how do you have a shot at winning this? Well, we want you guys and gals to show your creative side!

What we want you to do is recreate one of your favourite moments from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe…in photographic form!

We want you to be as creative as you can with your photograph! Maybe you want to get together with some friends and dress up to recreate a scene from Sonic Adventure? Perhaps you want to construct a scene from SatAM in clay? You might even consider making a segment of Sweet Mountain entirely out of cake! The choice is entirely down to you; the more original your idea and the more impressive and epic your picture is, the better chance you will have of snagging this ace statue…and believe me you will have lots of competition! The best photos along with the winning entry will be featured on the front page of the Sonic Stadium.

Get snapping, and good luck!

THE RULES:
1. The competition is open to anyone worldwide, but please only one entry per person – multiple entries will not be considered.
2. We want your picture to be entirely true to your effort and true to reality – no photoshopping or digital picture editing in any entries please!
3. Pictures need to be in digital form (preferably in .jpg or .png format), no bigger than 5MB in size, but no smaller than 1200 x 1600 pixels – we want to see great quality images!
4. All entries must be emailed to tbird [at] sonicstadium.org titled “Sonic Snap!” – your email must include your photograph, a sentence describing which scene your photo is recreating along with your real name and email address. We will only ask for your postal information if we pick you as the winner.
5.  All entries must be received by 5:00pm GMT on Friday 4th of November 2011. Any entries received after this date will unfortunately not be considered, so get them in before you start playing the game on launch day!

TOP TIPS!
Think outside the box! Don’t just get your toys out and take a photo – think of an idea or an element that no one else will think of! Use your environment, use props, use your brain!
Think about your idea thoroughly! Don’t rush to get your entry in by the end of the first week! Brainstorm your ideas and talk to friends and family – sometimes inspiration comes from unlikely places!
Use the time you have! You’ve got over four weeks to submit your entry – plenty of time to make or obtain anything you need to set the scene.
– Get others involved! Get your friends to pose with you, or get your folks to help making things – there is no limit to how many people you have involved in your entry!

Sonic CD Original Soundtrack 20th Anniversary Edition to be Released

So far we have seen both Sonic Adventure titles as well as the Sonic Heroes soundtracks re-released this year in abridged formats, along with the two upcoming Sonic Generations soundtracks which are already on the way…not to mention the Masato Nakamura release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 original music and demos! To add to that, the soundtrack to Sonic the Hedgehog CD will now be seeing a release later this year! Unlike the other soundtracks, this will be the first time this soundtrack has made it to an official release, with select tracks only appearing on other compilations.

The release date is scheduled for the 23rd of November this year, with a RRP of ¥2400 (about £21 / $32). To date no track listing is available.

So, SEGA…when will we be seeing a US soundtrack re-release? Oh really? Thought not.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 Soundtrack Available for Preorder

Although news on it’s release has been pretty sketchy, it now finally looks like the Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 soundtrack will be seeing the light of day this October.

With distribution through the Universal Music (the record label of Japanese super group Dreams Come True to which the original composer Masato Nakamura belongs), the soundtrack is set to contain the full workings from the Megadrive / Genesis titles, along with unheard demo material all reworked.

You can preorder this soundtrack now through Play-Asia for $36.49 (about £27) and CDJapan for ¥3000 (about £26), and you will be pleased to know they will ship to most countries worldwide. The soundtrack is set to be released on 19th of October 2011.

Although no announcement of track listings or box art has been confirmed, the price would indicate that this may be a double-CD soundtrack [EDIT – Sonic Retro claim it comes on a massive 3 CDs with 88 tracks -T] , although again this is speculative; we will keep you informed as always through the Sonic Stadium as more information comes to light.

Way Past School! Stationery Competition Winners

Well, there certainly was a lot of homework for the TSS staff to mark this weekend! So much in fact it’s taken us an extra day to do it – but now we can officially announce the winner of the competition! We had nearly 300 entries; some made us laugh, some made us cry (ok a lot made us cry) … some were so long we fell asleep half way through reading them. But like in any class, the top students have passed their test with flying colours!

So, without further delay, congratulations to our winner needsemail1, with this very clever, Sonic Colors-themed excuse:

“Sorry i didn’t do my algebra home work – I forgot how to CUBE.” -needsemail1

We’re also sending some stationery to two runners up, Curty and skyblaze, who also had two very understandable excuses:

“Sorry I bombed that Physics exam. I copied from Takashi Iizuka.” – skyblaze

“Sorry I’m late Sir, I was late leaving my dorm because I had to…cream the rabbit >:3” – Curty

All three of you please get in contact with your postal details through tbird [at] sonicstadium.org and we will send your prizes out to you!

As for the rest of you, it’s 5 laps around Green Hill Zone with Coach AAUK.

Sonic the Hedgehog Official ESP Guitar Available For Pre-Order

Any self-respecting guitar enthusiast and Sonic the hedgehog fan will have at some point drooled over the prospect of playing Jun Senoue’s trademark STH-130 ESP custom Sonic guitar. Some of you have been lucky enough to hold it!

Well, now you can have your very own!  As hinted by Senoue-san himself in recent months via his twitter account, ESP guitars will be producing a replica of this guitar available for purchase via ESP Japan. Much like the original, these replicas will all be high-end performance guitars made from top-of-the-line components, and would be the crowning jewel in any avid guitarist’s collection.

However, with a top-line guitar comes a top line cost – the instrument will be commanding a price of ¥136,500, which is the equivalent to around £1100 or $1750. If you’re planning on saving for one of these beasts, you’d also better get your skates on as they will only be available for pre-order until December this year.

Even so, top collectors and die-hard Senoue fans will be scrambling to get their hands on one of these beauties…now you can look the part as well as sound it!

Now I wonder if there is any chance to get one in left-handed…

[EDIT: For those who this interests (particularly me!) a left handed version will be available! Joy!

Sonic 4: Episode 2 Planned For 2012 Release

Those waiting eagerly for the second installment of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 should expect to see a title in 2012. According to the head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka in an interview with Eurogamer:

“This year, 2011, is the anniversary, so we’re focusing on the celebration title,” Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka told Eurogamer, “But moving forward to 2012, Sonic will still be going, so I’d hope to provide Episode 2 then.”

There was no comment from Iizuka with regards to whether or not there would be a release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 3, and our guess will be that this would be dependent on the reception the second title in the episodic series gets.

For now, Iizuka has stated that priorities are set on the anniversary title, and that the plan has always been to release episode 2 after Sonic Generations.

For now, we will have to sit tight – it may be a while before we hear anything more with regards to this game.

Details of Plot to Sonic Generations Emerge

We’ve seen a lot of footage coming out of Gamescom last week with regards to gameplay in Sonic Generations, but the storyline of the game has been kept realtively vague. However details have emerged from allaboutgames.co.uk on some elements of the story early in the game – the exerpt is taken from the preview by Andy Daniel:

At the start of the game, everyone is attending a picnic in honour of Sonic’s 20th, when all of a sudden a mysterious dark force intrudes and sends everyone, including our spiky blue protagonist, back in time. Sonic is finding a way to get himself and everyone else back to the present time and along the way he bumps into many familiar faces including his younger (albeit chubbier) self! The two Sonics team up and work together to save their friends once again.

While confirming nothing, this may illude to the other characters that may appear in the game including the introduction of a possible new antagonist.

Funny, I thought Sonic spent his birthday down the pub with Dreadknux…

Sonic Generations Release Dates

Our friends over at Sonic Extreme are reporting that IGN has inadvertently let slip the release dates for Sonic Generations in both US and UK territories. Extreme reports that before the above adverts were taken down, the images featured a US release date of Tuesday, 1st of November 2011 with the UK release coming three days later on the Friday, 4th of November 2011.

Although not independently confirmed elsewhere, the banner above, now hosted on Sonic Extreme would certainly indicate these are the launch dates.

Looks like we’ll be staying in this Guy Fawkes night!

Sonic Generations Modern Sonic Character Animations Video

Exaclty what it says on the tin – a video has emerged including a host of Modern Sonic’s new animations, in which Sonic reprises some old classic poses and motions, with a whole host of super cool ones…including a riff-tastic air guitaring sequence, which looks to be a particularly energetic end-of-stage celebration.

Coincidentally if you like the piece of music that is played with a lot of the Generations trailers, it is a track called “Tenderoni” by Kele – watch it here.

Nice spot by Shockhog and ENVY16!

Sonic Generations Mushroom Hill 3DS Gameplay Footage from Gamescom 2011

A full stage-and-a-bit’s worth of gameplay footage from Mushroom Hill Zone on Sonic Generations with both modern and classic Sonic! Fans will no doubt be pleased to see the return of losts of features from the original stage along with a host of the most recognisable badniks.

By the sound of it, Modern Sonic’s music for Mushroom hill is identical to the original version from Sonic & Knuckles; however the track for this stage may not have been finalised and this is a placeholder track. Classic Sonic’s Mushroom Hill stage does appear to have a musical makeover however, and is sounding pretty nifty…but you will need to wait for the end of the video for that!

The SEGA booth at Gamescom 2011 Video Tour

Having visited the SEGA booth at E3 with it’s mammoth Sonic statue, the aesthetic Sonic Generations stand, the quaint M&S London Olympic games arena and the Aliens bunker to name a few, I thought SEGA wouldn’t ever be able to outdo themselves. Well, take a look at some of these images and videos coming out of Cologne this week from the Gamescom 2011 show!

In amongst all of the titles being shown off at the German event, there is giant inflatable Sonic the hedgehog, an entire double decker bus…and of course my favourite part of all, a  history wall showcasing merchandise past and present (check out the video tour for that!) kindly donated for the duration of the show by Sonic fan and Sonic merchandise collector ‘Yellow’ (Alessandro Sanasi) from Spindash.de.

Look out for Sonic making an appearance too! Be sure to check out the SEGA flikr feed for more photos of the day.
