Sonic Talk is back with it’s latest (and belated) episode. We originally recorded this in November, but circumstances unfortunately made editing the episode difficult. Nevertheless, here it is!
This month we discuss Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the latest goings on in the Sonic comics, Movie Sonic’s new look, Headcannon’s Vertebreaker Kickstarter campaign, Sonic X’s return to Japanese airwaves, and of course, PUMA’s latest Sonic shoes. Before all that we also talk about some of the sweet new games we played ahead of the holiday!
Japanese TV network Kids Station has begun airing reruns of Sonic’s mid-2000s anime, Sonic X. These reruns will include the Metarex Saga, the final season of the show never before broadcast in Japan.

Good news – Sonic X has finally made it’s way to Netflix in the west!
Don’t blink! Don’t think! Just go-go, go-go, g-g-g-g-go-go down to your local video store on May 28 to pick up Sonic X: The complete series on Region 2 SD Blu-Ray! (God, that was corny.)
The good folks at Disctek Media are bringing all 78 english language episodes in one volume. (Sorry Japanese sub fans, you’ll have to stick with Hulu for now.) This includes the extras from the DVD version as well as the original pitch video where the world of Sonic X had a lot less humans.
The Blu-Ray retails for $69.99, but you can pre-order it from rightstufanime right now for $45.47. Check out Brady Hartel’s Twitter for more info. In the meantime, here’s the cover.
As the fan base wait for the imminent release of Sonic Mania Adventures, the newest cartoon incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog, it appears that another cartoon, pitched some 10 years ago, never saw the light of day.
According to a LinkedIn profile for TV writer Grant Moran (whose credits include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Batman), a new Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon was in the works between the months of May and October 2007, some 3 years after Sonic X concluded.
We contacted Mr Moran, who was kind enough to provide a few more details about the TV series which ultimately failed to get green-lit. Simply entitled ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, it was initially commissioned by Sega through entertainment company Phuuz Entertainment.
Although no further details could be provided, we thank Mr Moran for confirming this was indeed a TV series project, and will bring you any further updates to this story as they come to light.

The actor, singer and songwriter Hartmut Neugebauer reportedly passed away on June 22, 2017, aged 74. He was known to the Sonic community in Germany as the voice artist for Dr. Eggman in Sonic X and a number of Sonic the Hedgehog video games. The anime series Sonic X is about to see a new lease of life on DVD, thanks to US based entertainment company Diskotek Media. The news was originally announced on Diskotek’s Facebook page, simply stating ‘Sonic X complete series! Release date TBD’
Unlike the original releases of Sonic X DVDs which all came in volumes of episodes, this single release looks to include all 78 episodes of the series, originally broadcast from 2003-2006.
As implied by Diskotek’s Facebook post, no date has been decided for release yet, but one of the company’s employees also spoke about the upcoming release over on Sonic Retro’s message boards, where further information was brought to light.
The user known as ‘Kushami’ has said that the license Diskotek currently has to produce the DVD is for the dubbed version only, although Diskotek is aware of the strong desire by fans for subtitled versions of the original Japanese episodes, and has emphasised that the idea of a second release with the subs could potentially be done, but is only likely if the response to this first DVD is strong enough.
Other details included that in keeping with the licensor’s requests, the DVD will use the dub’s intro to the show (no Sonic Drive this time people… sorry!), and that there isn’t likely to be much in this release in the way of extra features, but such extras may be considered for the mentioned possible re-release. A Blu-Ray release is also said to be unlikely, due to the fact that the original show has no high definition masters.

Anyway, it’s Valentine’s day, love (or some other foul stench) is in the air and it’s the perfect time to talk about everyone’s favorite Sonic relationships. While I’m sure there are many of you who like to ship their own fictional Sonic couples be it straight, gay or “call the police”, I wanted to focus on the ones that have been made official or even semi-official through the games, comics or cartoons be they full blown couples or just one-sided love interests. I’m not much of a shipper myself, but I wanted to look at them from a writer’s perspective to see what works about them. So in no particular order, here’s my list of what I personally think are the best couples in the Sonic Universe.

Let’s be (or “bee”) honest here….nobody cares for Charmy Bee much (and yes, I’m sure that there are some who’d say otherwise and like my head on a platter. All three of them).
What is he good for? What does he even do at the Chaotix? Is he their secretary? Vector’s youthful ward? Does that helmet thing even come off of his head? What?! He hasn’t been a playable character since Sonic Heroes and even then he was just one of three you controlled at the same time. He has no real personality so you can’t even relate to him in any way. Look at the other kids. Tails? Young super genius. Cream? Polite little girl who tends to have the strongest morals. Marine? Immature, bratty little girl who annoys people because she’s probably lonely and seeks attention. Charmy? Little boy. That’s it. (Not counting Sonic X where he at least had a Bart Simpson-like “prankster” personality.) Frankly, just listening to him gives me the hives.
At least the comics give you a reason to feel sorry for him. Lots of reasons. This poor little bastard’s life has been absolute hell. Read on to see why life as a bee can totally suck. But beeware honey, his tale is so tragic it may sting your eyes.

Unfortunately, Dan’s wife has passed away after giving birth to their twins last week. We here at the Sonic Stadium would like to extend our utmost sympathies at this time to Dan and his family in this tragic loss.

Here it is, everybody. The final page. Not much to really say about it, honestly, except that it’s probably one of my favorite pages Yardley! did. So I’ll end this feature with some talk about both ECC and Tracy Yardley!
Emerald Coast Comics is a web comic website, run mostly by people who aspire to become professionalism in the comic book industry. The comic projects on the site are used to give writers and artists a conduit through which to practice and hone their skills, as well as bring to life characters they’ve loved since they where children. Sonic Eggs isn’t the only comic on the site, and you are certainly welcome to check out a few of the others for yourself. ECC is a lot like SonicVerseTeam of old, except it does all of it’s comics in-house and has, over the years, developed stricter quality control measures to ensure most things on the website are a step up from your typical web comic fair, aside from a strip called Staffers, which is mostly used as practice for new artists.
We do occasionally give out commissions to smooth out the process, such was the case with Tracy Yardley! If you want to commission Tracy Yardley, whether it be a comic page, or just a damn cool piece of art, contact him on his DA. a penciled and inked piece will run you around $120, plus an additional $10 if you want him to send the picture to you. Yardley!’s time is precious, as being a comic book artist can be rather difficult to make a living off of. Keep in mind that he does this professionally and very well when you take the price into account.
Finally, I’d like to say that Yardley! is an absolute joy to work with. His e-mail correspondences where always fun and cheerful, he got each commission done promptly and quickly despite his busy schedule, and when he sent Jason the pages in the mail, he included a kind letter and some ashcan art books. Frankly, his personality and promptness alone was worth every penny.
So, without further ado, I bring you the conclusion to Tracy Yardley’s run on Sonic Eggs, colored by Jamie Lee. The story doesn’t end here, though. Check out ECC next Saturday for future Sonic Eggs pages, penciled and inked by ECC Staff member Kichi. If you want this comic featured regularly on the front page, let us know.
This week’s page is an example of Sonic Egg’s use of continuity for future gags and jokes. In a previous page, Tails mentioned something about giving the Tornado “sentience”. This wasn’t a throw away gag. He’s really doing it. And you can see him at work below. Also, did I….neglect to mention that no one on this comic particularly cares for Chris?
This comic runs weekly at ECC. You can discuss this comic with long time fans and the creator’s at their forums, where occasional sneak peaks of future pages are given.
ECC’s Summer of Yardley continues this week with another page. This page is a perfect example of why Tracy Yardley! is one of my favorite people on the Archie Sonic book: the character interaction. For a single page, a lot is conveyed here, through facial expressions, movement, and stuff happening in the background. Despite Tracy’s simple style, he’s able to put a lot into his pages. He is probably one of the few comic book artists I know of who understand how much plot and story can be conveyed through how the characters act and move, not just what they say.
This page was colored by Kichi, and lettered by the Illustrious Q. Sonic Eggs is an Emerald Coast Comics series.
Sonic Eggs is probably one of my favorite web comics running. Acting as a fan continuation of Archie’s “Sonic X” comic book (which in and of itself was a strictly in continuity Sonic X storyline), Sonic Eggs is a weekly strip written by occasional Sonic Stadium contributor Jason Berry, and posted on the website Emerald Coast Comics. It both satirizes and pays homage to all things Sonic, while also making an effort to be (almost) as kid friendly as its source material.
So why is this being featured in the community blog? Well, renowned Archie Sonic artist Tracy Yardley!* has actually done a series of pages for it, which will be running in the comic over the next six weeks! In addition to Tracy, Eggs also got another Archie talent, Ben Hunzeker. He did the shading for this page, as well another upcoming page. The flats for this page where done by Deebs.
Unlike many pages in the comic, this page does not have an individual gag, though it is building to something later. For the thousands of you who don’t follow the series, Sonic Eggs’ current plot centers around “Shades”, and unfinished, sissy version of the dark brooding ball of emo! For those of you interested in catching up to the current plot, you can find the rest of the comic here.
*The exclamation mark isn’t a typ-o, it’s part of Tracy’s name.
A lot of you probably have already seen the first season of “Sonic X” many times and own the DVDs, but hey, why not watch it again on your computer?
Today, Hulu has uploaded the entire first season! Currently, the episodes are only in Japanese with English subtitles that you can switch on and off with Hulu’s closed-captioning feature. Hulu will be working with 4KIDS to obtain the English-dubbed episodes. In addition, if you’re outside the United States, you will be locked out from watching them.
Bonkers Aussie Sonic superfan Elson “Darkspeeds” Wong usually goes full-tilt when he wants to do something, and he’s certainly added some spice to the SEGASonic:Radio line-up; this week will be no exception! Voice actor Mike Pollock, best known as the voice of Dr. Eggman in the Western version of Sonic X will be joining Darkspeeds for a chat on his show!

Jetix, the UK TV station that owns the rights to Sonic X, has recently been rebranded by parent company Disney in a bid to improve ratings. The move has resulted in the channel being renamed as ‘Disney XD’ and features a combines real-life Disney drama with cartoons on Jetix’s old schedule such as Pokemon: Battle Dimension.
In the US, 4Kids Entertainment – the anime localisation studio that doubled as a programming block on Fox television until December 2008 – has put itself up for sale according to paidContent.org. The move follows a dismal performance of the business, in which a recent report reveals that the company’s last profitable year was Fiscal Year ending January, 2006. 4Kids are reported to be going through a selective bidding process.
The implications on the animation Sonic X, and the Sonic franchise in general, could be massive. In Europe, Disney has owned the Jetix channel since 2001 – the aforementioned XD channel launch seems merely like an exercise in assimilation. However, Jetix owns the merchandising rights to the entire Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in Europe, following a contract discrepancy with Sega in 2003. With Jetix merged, this opens questions as to whether Disney absorbs those rights or whether the contract defaults back to Sega Europe.
Back in North America, it will be interesting to see who ends up buying 4Kids and thus owning the rights to the Sonic X animation. With Disney’s move in Europe, it would be rather ironic to see the House of Mouse buy the company and complete the set of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons (thus far Disney own the rights to SatAM and Sonic Underground – it is assumed they own Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog too). Far more worrying a prospect is if 4Kids never finds a buyer, but with a portfolio including Pokemon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles there’s a slim chance of that happening.

A report from Andrew Paulson has revealed that US anime localisation company 4Kids are to start providing original, uncensored episodes of the Japanese Sonic X series. A short trailer featuring a clip from the first episode, Enter the Supersonic Hero, has been uploaded to their Youtube Channel. The only problem is, if you’re outside of the US, you’re blocked from watching it – just like any other Sonic X video the company has on their account.
The move is both a positive instance of 4Kids coming to terms with what a lot of their audience has asked for, yet a shock for worldwide fans that even today have to put up with archaic regional rights issues. The TSSZ article is littered with comments from fans disappointed that they cannot watch their favourite cartoon online.
4Kids has received a lot of venom in the past for their handling of Japanese anime shows. Vitriol from Sonic the Hedgehog fans have been somewhat more intense due to an ownership of the franchise’s merchandising rights, along with a controversial move of integrating their voice actors into the Sega games.
They may well be trying to make things up to a ton of their disgruntled viewers tired of the American edits and censors, but have 4Kids scored another own goal here? Let us know in the Comments box or the SSMB.
A 6 year old Norwegian child by the name of Christer had his hopes crushed recently by the King of Norway who he wrote to asking for his name to be changed to ‘Sonic X’. The child, a fan of the Japanese Anime of the same name, wrote a letter to King Harold V but his parents thought common sense would prevail and were at first reluctant to post it.
Several months passed until Christer finally begged them to send it and amazingly once they did they received a reply. King Harold V wrote back stating that he couldn’t change the child’s name yet as he was under the age of 18 but that if he asked again some 12 years later he would happily change it then.
Christer, forlorn at the bad news and long wait ahead of him told Norwegian website dagbladet.no that the decision “was a bit bad.”
Alls well that ends well though as Sega have actually tried to make contact with Christer through the website in question to send him some Sonic X Goodies to cheer him up.

It’s true. Eagle-eyed SSMB’er Sonic-Fan has spotted some new Sonic X branded plushies, which will be heading for Europe in ‘Early 2009’. The drawback? You can’t buy them. You can only win them.
The plushies were found on SEGA Prize Europe’s website, which is a subsidiary of SEGA that deals in prize arcade machines – the most common of which being UFO Catchers. While super-rare, SEGA branded UFO Catchers do exist in the UK, with the two most prominent ones located in London’s Trocadero Plaza (the building formerly known as SEGA World) in Piccadilly. Although these plushies will most likely feature in SEGA’s own UFO Catchers, the ‘Trade Purchase’ option suggests that non-SEGA branded machines could also house these awesome looking toys.
You can grab one of five different characters; Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy or Shadow. No Eggman sadly, but these 12″-15″ plushies look very cool indeed and are much better than some of the other official UFO plushies that looked like cheap knockoffs. The Sonic one is particularly cute. D’aw, look’attim. He wants a hug.
If you’re a prominent arcade manager, or a rather brave Sonic fan that will gladly pass themselves off as an arcade manager, then you can buy these plushies in bulk cartons of 6 pieces. You can enquire via the SEGA Prize Europe website.

So I randomly thought of Sonic X, which made me randomly remember digital tv channel Jetix, which I randomly remembered show Sonic X, which made me randomly remember they have a Sonic X website, where I randomly remembered they use to have a Sonic X store on their site, so I went there and clicked the ‘Store’ link. I was randomly taken to a page full of Sonic X items at a site called Toystore.co.uk.
Alot of the Sonic X merchandise I remember seeing at Jetix’s old Sonic X store but unless I’m mistaken a couple of new ones seem to have appeared –

With Sonic Unleashed just round the corner, it’s more than enough time to start promoting the blue blur with just about anything and everything you can create, right? Well, McDonald restaurants in Australia are being a bit more… economical with their promotion of Sonic the Hedgehog, by offering Sonic X Happy Meal toys. The same ones we saw in Britain about a year or so ago. Still, a collectible is a collectible, and according to our Antipodean tipster this is the first time the Launcher toy series has been seen in the land of Oz.
So if you’re Australian and want to get fat, roll yourselves down to your nearest Maccy’s and catch ’em all! Or, if you’d rather not indulge in their food, see if you can buy the toys separately. I know some places will let you have the toys for a dollar or something.

UPDATE: We’re being told by Aussie members of the SSMB that these toys have been around before, something like six months ago. So maybe McDonald’s aren’t as slow as we thought, but it was strange to hear that they had brought them back again in that case. As of today (18th November) it doesn’t look like Sonic is part of the Happy Meal parade anymore, according to our Australian fast-food goers. Still, there’s always eBay or something.

Americans have it pretty good with Sonic comic and cartoon media right now. DVD boxsets of SatAM, AoStH and… erm… Underground, and plenty of new Archies to wet the dream of many a comic connoisseur. 4Kids want to get in on the action and start airing Sonic X again! Remember that one? The one with the 4Kids.
Yes, the adventures of Sonic, Chris, Tails, Chris, Cream and Chris will start appearing on 4Kids TV every Saturday starting this weekend, at 10am (ET/PT, because we know that bit’s important to you). Sonic X can also be watched on demand via an array of digital channels including Comcast. Not only that, but there’ll be a new DVD release, including the Chaos and Shadow Sagas (eps 27-38) coming 2nd September 2008. Now Americans have it very good, surely!

Sonic X Returns to 4Kids TV, New DVD (TSSZ News)
The second installment in Archie’s “Enerjak: Reborn” story arc for the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book, is now available in comic book specialty shops. The comic, written by fan comic creator turned proffesional comic book writer Ian “Potto” Flynn, marks the return of fan favorite villian Enerjak. You will find the preview, the cover, and a three page sample below:

Penpen2nd of the Bumbleking Forums recently received an e-mail from the anime DVD seller/publisher Right Stuf that the Sonic X DVDs have been “marked for close out”, and will be discontinued as soon as it’s sold out.
I was recently able to confirm this with their customer support. This means that these DVDs may soon start disappearing from store shelves for good. If you want them, you’d best pick them up now. As far as I know, this only applies to North America, or wherever Funimation distributes the DVDs.
Sonic X will be airing in reruns as part of 4KidTV’s Saturday morning line up this fall.
Given that a lot of things are riding on the new Sonic the Hedgehog game on XBOX 360 and PS3, it’s good that journalists are able to get the chance to really get a feel for the apparently ‘make-or-break’ title. Of course, having a rather dodgy demo released on XBOX Live probably doesn’t help — I had the chance to play the early E3 2006 demo in August at SEGA HQ and it played better than the half-a-level with stodgy controls given to us through our XBOX hard drives (PSU on the other hand was sublime, but I digress).
