Sonic 2 Movie Getting Exclusive Walmart Bundle that Includes IDW Comic

In addition to the standard and steelbook variations of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 blu ray, Walmart is also getting a third, exclusive version bundled with IDW’s one-shot tie-in comic.

The bundle is currently available for pre-order for $22.96 from Walmart.com. Given that the regular blu ray version is being sold for the same price, people who buy the bundle are essentially getting a $7 comic for free.

Nearly a month after its (now deleted) announcement, we still don’t know much about the Sonic Netflix series. Technically, it hasn’t even been officially announced! Nevertheless, we now at least know one thing it won’t be: an adaptation of the IDW Sonic comic series.

Whisper Shoots Her Way into Sonic Forces With New Event, “Guardian Angel”

Whisper the Wolf, the fan-favorite socially anxious sniper from IDW’s Sonic comic, has arrived in the mobile version of Sonic Forces in a new ten day event: Guardian Angel. Whisper brings her wisp-fueled variable whispon sniper rifle to the race, which allows her to access three new power-ups: cyan laser, green hover, and pink spikes.

Cyan laser fires a beam both forward and behind Whisper, while green hover gives Whisper a speed boost and extends her air time. Her final power-up, pink spike, lays spike traps for rivals to run into.

To unlock Whisper, players will have until July 27 to collect 60 character cards by completing specific missions. Whisper’s stats give her 8/10 on speed, 6/10 on acceleration, and a 7/10 on strength. As she is a rare character rather than an event character, it should be possible to get her cards after the event is over, although they will be quite rare.

I am currently halfway towards unlocking her, so be sure to check back later for footage of her in action!

Tangle Swings into Sonic Forces Today

Less than a week after popping up in Sonic Dash, fan-favorite IDW Sonic character Tangle the Lemur has now found her way into Sonic Forces Mobile in a new week-and-half-long event, “It’s Hero Time!”

She comes to the game as a rare character, and players will need to earn 60 character cards to unlock her. These cards are earned by completing specific missions during the event, which will last from today until July 17.

Tangle brings two new power ups to the game: tail strike, a damaging short-range dash that can take up two item slots, and tail spring, which will let Tangle essentially perform a powered-up spin attack. When it comes to her stats, she scores a 7/10 in speed, 5/10 in acceleration, and 10/10 in strength.

Whisper will likely be coming to the game later this month, after Tangle’s event ends. Stay tuned to this post for Tangle gameplay footage!

Tangle & Whisper Uncovered in Sonic Dash Datamine!

Sonic’s mobile games have been focused on making more Sonic characters playable for years now, making deeper and deeper cuts into the game canon. Now, Hardlight seems to be mining Sonic’s IDW comics for new characters, according to data uncovered by Twitter user Bluwolfboy. He dug into the latest build of the Android version of Sonic Dash, and uncovered two new characters: Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf! These two characters were introduced early on in Sonic’s IDW run, and became so popular the soon got their own four-part mini series!

Bluwolfboy uncovered fully 3D models and character icons. They also posted proof that the characters are in the data, and Tails Channel was able to independently verify it themselves.

This is a major milestone, not just for IDW Sonic, but for Sonic comics in general. Aside from the Freedom Fighter’s cameos in Sonic Spinball, and a few canceled games, this marks the first time Sonic comics characters have been present in a game! That said, we’re probably still a long way off from any members of the Archie cast popping up in anything.

You can check out Tangle and Whisper’s game assets below. If you want access to the actual models, check out the source at the bottom of the page! Obviously, it is currently not known when these characters will be available, but given they are in the data we probably won’t be waiting too long!

Sonic Talk is back with it’s latest (and belated) episode. We originally recorded this in November, but circumstances unfortunately made editing the episode difficult. Nevertheless, here it is!

This month we discuss Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the latest goings on in the Sonic comics, Movie Sonic’s new look, Headcannon’s Vertebreaker Kickstarter campaign, Sonic X’s return to Japanese airwaves, and of course, PUMA’s latest Sonic shoes. Team Sonic Racing comic Gets a Plus Deluxe Turbo Championship Edition Reprint

IDW will be reprinting their comic book tie-in for Team Sonic Racing this May, complete with new content, to coincide with the release of the game. The reprint even has a special name, “Team Sonic Racing Plus Deluxe Turbo Championship Edition.” The new content will include a guide to the Wisp power-ups, a glossary Of Team Moves, a gallery of in-game tracks, and commentary from the tie-in’s writer, Caleb Goellner.

The original print run of the one-shot was originally slated to release alongside the game last fall, before the game was delayed. For whatever reason, the comic wasn’t also delayed, giving it the dubious distinction of being the first Sonic game tie-in comic to beat the release of its game by six months.

It’s currently unknown if the reprint will have a new cover. You can check out the original cover below!

IDW Announces Sonic the Hedgehog Annual comic

IDW has announced that the Sonic comic will be getting its very first oversized issue next March with Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2019. This 48-page comic is not only a first for the IDW series, but also the first oversized comic Sonic has starred in in over 18 years.

A big comic requires a lot of people to make and the list of creators for this comic is sizable. This issue will be featuring work from series veterans Ian Flynn, Evan Stanley, Jennifer Hernandez, Jonathan Gray, Caleb Goellner, Diana Skelly, and Gigi Dutreix. The comic will also be introducing new creators from other IDW comics, including Jack Lawerence (Transformers: Lost Light), Cavan Scott (Star Wars Adventures), and James Kochalka (Johnny Boo).

In addition to all of these new creators, the comic will also feature a cover variant from veteran Sonic game artist Yuji Uekawa. Uekawa is best known for his work in the Sonic Adventure games, which introduced Sonic’s modern, green-eyed look. This cover will mark Uekawa’s debut in Sonic comics.

In a press release IDW gave exclusively to ComicBook.com, Uekawa gave his thoughts on IDW’s original characters, which are featured in his cover. “I am really happy to draw IDW’s original characters altogether with Sonic and his friends, as I had never imagined that I would draw these characters as official artwork. As with many IDW Sonic series fans, I personally love Tangle and Whisper, and I am very much looking forward to seeing their further adventures with Sonic, as well as seeing original characters in future issues!”

The other two variant covers will feature art from Hernandez and Nathalie Fourdraine.

The issue will cost $7.99, and the number of individual stories it will feature are currently unknown. Stay tuned for further details!

UPDATE: Sonic comic editor David Mariotte has confirmed that the comic will feature five stories:

A Tangle and Whisper story from Ian Flynn and Jennifer Hernandez.

A Sonic and Tails story from Caleb Goellner and Jack Lawerence.

A Rouge the Bat story from Cavan Scott and Diana Skelly.

A Sonic fan club story from James Kochalka and Jon Gray.

A Blaze and Silver story from Evan Stanley and Gigi Dutriex.
