Weston Super Sonic 2016 logo

Weston Super Sonic, the Sonic Convention that debuted two years ago in Weston Super-Mare, England is returning once again for a brand spanking new convention in 2016.

weston super sonic

After a brilliant event earlier this year, the convention only needs £1000 to get the event up and running, and is already promising a guest, numerous traders and competitions.

Backers can also get their hands on numerous rewards for backing the event including entry to the event, T-shirts, pin badges and an entry into a raffle for a 20th Anniversary Sonic statue, courtesy of Sonic Merchandise.

Stretch goals are also in place, allowing attendees to get new gift bags for attending, as well as the ability to have more guests attend.

At the time of writing, the project is already nearly quarter of the way there! Pledge your support, and help the convention to put on another awesome show!

Back the convention’s kickstarter here!

First 4 Figures Asking for ideas for 25th Anniversary Statue

25thtease

Every main anniversary Sonic has had in recent years has been commemorated with some form of limited collectible figurine, and now First 4 Figures is asking us for ideas for what the all-important 25th anniversary piece should be.

The company reached out on Facebook asking fans for ideas and suggestions for what the should be implemented into the 25th anniversary statue:

So… About that 25th anniversary of Sonic.

The F4F ‘veterans’ amongst you will remember that SEGA commissioned us to produce a run of limited figurines for the 20th anniversary nearly 5 years ago, and now our creative cogs are turning once again for next year.

What would your ideal 25th anniversary statue look like? Throw your ideas/wish lists our way! There’s only a few things you need to keep in mind:

-Classic Sonic is to be the main focus, but don’t let that stop you from including other things from his history such as classic items.

-The statue needs to be as all-encompassing as possible

Unlike last time, SEGA will allow us to sell these to Sonic fans the world over, so let’s hear you!

My favourite part of this: We’ll actually be able to buy this one without having to pay small fortunes on eBay! Hurray!

Interestingly, First 4 Figures has requested to keep this piece as a Classic Sonic focussed piece… Interesting.

Head on over to F4F’s Facebook page to submit your ideas, and allow me to start pouring all my earnings into the newly created ‘F4F Anniversary Statue Fund’.

A Not-So-Little Look at: First 4 Figures Dr. Eggman Statue

Eggmanbox

Today was a rather special day for me.

Earlier today, I took delivery of one of the largest collectible boxes I’m likely to receive in my life, containing what is likely to become one of my favourite merch items ever. It’s First 4 Figures’ latest release and of my favourite character in the series ever: Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik. So without further ado, here’s some absurd-resolution images of what $400 worth of maniacal painted polystone will get you.

The moment old Postman Pat turned up with it, the initial thoughts crossed my mind:

DSC07219RESIZED
“Big box. Big box. Biiiiiiig box”

To give an idea as to how massive this box actually is, you could probably hide and mail a small child to a different country inside it if you really wanted to (though I don’t recommend trying this).

The inside art box gives us our first look at a very nicely presented package. Seriously, it’s a shame the art boxes are too nice to throw away. They’re starting to take over my home. If you’re like me, you’ll want to keep hold of the plain cardboard shipper box too to keep this arty box looking swish. As well as the normal character description on the reverse, there are plenty of nice art renders on the side as well to gawp at.

Let’s pull the tab and get inside…

DSC07227RESIZED051

Another thing that F4F love doing is embossing the Styrofoam interior with embossed writing and pictures. As far as First 4 Figures pieces go, it’s business as usual. We also get a peek at Eggman’s authenticity card. Also… I spy discrepancies. ‘Eggman’ on the box, and now ‘Robotnik’ on the Styrofoam? This warrants further investigation. Let’s get the lid off.

Eggman’s package contains a whole lot of different parts: 10 pieces in total. All made up of a base, two Chaos Emeralds, four hands, the left and right halves of Eggman’s moustache and finally the good doctor’s body itself. I must admit that seeing him with no moustache is rather unsettling.

Assembling Ivo is rather simple. Align the large peg in his leg into the hole on the Wing Fortress base, put his moustache into place and then simply choose whatever hands you wish to display him with. The hands themselves are actually magnetic, meaning that fiddling around with metal pegs and awkward positioning is essentially a non-issue.

DSC07238RESIZED041

Just like that, we have a near two-foot tall menace to terrorise Sonic and his friends. Let’s take a look at some of the smaller details you may have missed.

DSC07235RESIZED043

Firstly, here’s the underside of the base. ‘Eggman’ again. Hmm. It gives the usual licensing details and what number you’ve got. Number 25 of 1000 for me!

Despite not appearing the bulkiest of things, this base has a surprising amount of heft to it. I’d say a good bulk of the statue’s weight comes from this alone. Good stability. This is a good thing. The top of the base goes with a really sweet looking hexagonal checker-plate style pattern with an oily looking glaze to it. I’m not one for rivet counting, but the detailing around the base adds a lovely little touch of authenticity to the metalwork appearance.

Moving on up to Eggman himself. For such a simple character, there’s really a surprising amount of detail crammed into this bowling ball with arms. The buttons on his waist for instance are nice and shiny, as are the ones on his cuffs. As a matter of fact, these even have little ‘threads’ moulded into them.

My favourite part of Eggman has to be his head. The moustache has plenty of hand-painted lines to aid in adding detail. His mouth has a real amount of depth to it, and the tongue and teeth really pop. My absolute favourite part though has to be those glasses. They’re shiny. Really, really, REALLY shiny.

One of the noted features on Eggman has to be his set of swappable hands. Even the empty hands carry a nice amount of detail, with visible seams along his gloves. Being magnetic allows these empty hands to be switched out for a set of emerald-holding hands, which add an additional splash of colour to the statue’s palette. The emeralds themselves are big, clear, shiny and refract light just as you would expect them to. The swappable nature of them allows for quite a few different display options:

What about scale? As already mentioned, Eggman is nearly 2 feet in height, meaning he’s meant to be directly in scale with other characters in the series. Putting him alongside his blue nemesis shows the scaling is pretty spot-on. He looks really cool put next to Metal Sonic as well.

One other thing… I’d like to show you a comparison to that really scarce Japanese statue from years back. The pose is the same, but I’d wager that F4F Eggman is at least four to five times the size.

DSC07282RESIZED007

With that, let’s put him in his new home. Thankfully, other statues seem to fit rather tidily under each of his arms!

DSC07297RESIZED002

Have any of you been lucky enough to get your hands on an Eggman of your own? Let us know!

Sonic Boom In-store Concepts Found

sega9At this time, it’s hard to dismiss the notion that Sonic Boom, for all its intents hasn’t worked out at all in the way SEGA hoped it would. Now, UK based marketing company ‘Big Evil Robot’ has offered a look at an awesome (but in hindsight quite sad) look at what UK based toy stores like Toys R Us and Smyths could have looked like had Sonic Boom really taken off.

From Big Evil Robot’s website:

SEGA – SONIC BOOM! Shopper Experience

BRIEF : SEGA came to us looking for concepts to expand the launch of their new exclusive to the Wii U game, ‘Sonic Boom!’ as well as deepen engagement and interactivity levels with younger children.

IDEA: We created an eco-system of consumer engagement experiences that would get product into kids hands, generate word of mouth excitement and ultimately led to purchase. A  multi-activity roadshow, promoting the new game with the added bonus of being designed to keep kids fit, by creating playful physical activities

  • Augmented Reality ‘in-store’ interaction
  • iPad Remote controlled inflatable ‘drones’
  • Sonic ‘Speed Zorbing’ & Bungee Run
  • Interactive POS
  • Photo opportunities with core characters
  • Spot prizes and treasure hunts

sega7

sega6

The company hoped to shape a whole brand identity around the Sonic Boom franchise. It featured specially made and themed in-store displays that took advantage of augmented reality, and even a tour that would feature ‘character photo opportunities’, iPad controlled drone flights and activities for children to take part in including treasure hunts, ‘speed zorbing’ and bungee runs.

sega1

sega4

A slew of merchandise concepts can also be seen. T-Shirts, books and even what looks to possibly be lines of footwear feature in the retail displays seen in the pics.

With Sonic Boom’s game reputation withering on the grapevine, it’s very unlikely that we’ll be seeing anything like this in stores now, but it gives the impression that SEGA were really hoping for a big relaunch of the Sonic franchise with Sonic Boom.

Would you have liked to have seen this come to stores?

First 4 Figures’ Modern Super Sonic Statue opens for Pre-Orders

vertical_28

Modern Super Sonic; First 4 Figures’ latest offering has opened for pre-orders today, with a whole slew of extra details about the statue following in its wake.

The statue, which was revealed to fans some months ago at Weston Super Sonic depicts the climactic moments from the final battle in Sonic Adventure with Perfect Chaos, with Super Sonic splashing down into the flood waters that swamped Station Square.

horizontal_04

As is per the course with F4F releases, we’ve got a flashy, more limited (600 pieces) exclusive version for $249.99…

vertical_12

And a slightly less flashy and less limited (1500 pieces) regular version for $224.99.

vertical_20

Both versions of the statue are due to arrive in Q1 of 2016.

I think it’s safe to say in this instance that the Exclusive version is where it’s at this time around. I mean… Look at some of these darkened shots, and how the light shines up from the base to light up the entire figure. Hooray for clear resin!

And another shot from my personal collection from when WSS had the statue:

First 4 Figures Modern Super Sonic Pre-Orders open May 5th

20195_10152858507906732_5005241263243825564_n

We knew it was coming, and now it’s just around the corner. First 4 Figures’ Modern Super Sonic statue will be going up for pre-orders this coming Tuesday (5th May 2015).

Originally revealed at Weston Super Sonic earlier this year, the statue portrays Modern Super Sonic splashing down into Station Square’s flooded remains in a pose reminiscent to this piece of artwork. The statue also includes a kick arse lighting effect that causes the water on the top of the base to light up.

Below is a video our very own Hogfather got of the statue during his visit to Weston Super Sonic of the statue, and its lighting features.

Be sure to join us on Tuesday, where the full official reveal of the statue will take place!

Sonic 4: Episode 2 (mostly) functional on iOS again

sonic4_ep2_9

After initially becoming unusable following the iOS 7 update back in 2013, reports are coming in from iOS device owners that 2012’s Sonic 4: Episode 2 has become functional once again, following the new iOS 8.3 firmware update.

The game was pulled from Apple’s App Store several months after the discovery of the incompatibility problems, following a promise from SEGA of an update to restore functionality never materialised. The game remains off the store, meaning that only those who bought the game whist it was available will be able to play the game now.

Whilst the game now appears to function with the new iOS software, players are also reporting noticeable bugs during the game (and in the case of some devices like the iPhone 6, still not functioning at all), meaning the app is still not running at optimum performance. The most noticeable of these bugs is that skipping cutscenes causes the game to freeze and crash.

We’ll keep our eyes out for any more reports, and will update with any further details as we get them.

Freak Out Friday: All Aboard the Hype Train!

Sonic the Hedgehog is now on trains. I’m really not sure what else can be said apart from ‘We gots ourselves a new Hype Train to catch’ whenever the next Sonic game ends up being announced.

This very cute 1/10 scale railcar is running at the brand new SEGA Lalaport in Fujimi, Japan. The attraction known as the ‘Sega Sonic Railway’ allows visitors to ride in the Sonic themed engine seen above on a miniature railway. I’m not afraid to say that I want a ticket. Badly.

A roughly translated transcript of the accompanying post is as follows:

Complete series of Sonic X coming to DVD

Sonicx_english

The anime series Sonic X is about to see a new lease of life on DVD, thanks to US based entertainment company Diskotek Media. The news was originally announced on Diskotek’s Facebook page, simply stating ‘Sonic X complete series! Release date TBD’

Unlike the original releases of Sonic X DVDs which all came in volumes of episodes, this single release looks to include all 78 episodes of the series, originally broadcast from 2003-2006.

As implied by Diskotek’s Facebook post, no date has been decided for release yet, but one of the company’s employees also spoke about the upcoming release over on Sonic Retro’s message boards, where further information was brought to light.

The user known as ‘Kushami’ has said that the license Diskotek currently has to produce the DVD is for the dubbed version only, although Diskotek is aware of the strong desire by fans for subtitled versions of the original Japanese episodes, and has emphasised that the idea of a second release with the subs could potentially be done, but is only likely if the response to this first DVD is strong enough.

Other details included that in keeping with the licensor’s requests, the DVD will use the dub’s intro to the show (no Sonic Drive this time people… sorry!), and that there isn’t likely to be much in this release in the way of extra features, but such extras may be considered for the mentioned possible re-release. A Blu-Ray release is also said to be unlikely, due to the fact that the original show has no high definition masters.

Will you be ready to support this new release when it eventually rolls around? Would you buy in to better the chances of getting a subtitled version of the show produced? Let us know!

Sonic the Hedgehog Hot Air Balloon to Fly Again?

sonic-balloon-2010

The Sonic The Hedgehog hot air balloon (originally created to coincide with the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in Europe, and not to be confused with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon) could be taking to the skies again for the first time in over 15 years.

The news has been tipped to us by SonicHAB over at SSMB, who has stated that:

Sonic has undergone some cosmetic surgery and is planned to be flying at the Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta this October as his first free flight since 1999.

This would not only be the balloon’s first proper flight since the 90s, but also the balloon’s first appearance stateside.

The balloon itself has been around for years, and had its maiden flight way back in 1993 when it attended a hot air balloon fiesta in Switzerland, then appearing at several different gatherings all over Europe (I even got to see it fly for a few years when it visited the Bristol Balloon Fiesta a few times).

Whilst the balloon’s flight certificate expired back in 1999, the company looking after it (Irish Balloon flights) has brought the balloon out of storage several times in the past to make appearances as an attraction at numerous country shows and festivals as a non-flying balloon.

See some footage of the balloon on one of its outings here:

http://youtu.be/zcAxzjnFEsU

Also… Gotta love the registration on it… G-SEGA. Brilliant.

First 4 Figures “The Tornado” Diorama opens for Pre-Orders

horizontal_01

The latest in First 4 Figures’ Sonic Diorama Collection looks to be flying high, but at has just landed for pre-orders!

F4F’s “The Tornado” is a monster at almost 18 inches tall, and it captures the scene that played out at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where Sonic’s rocket equipped Bi-Plane powers through the clouds in chase of Dr. Eggman. The piece itself looks fantastic, with Sonic confidently riding the wings whilst Tails pilots from the Tornado’s cockpit.

A neat little addition to the piece is the inclusion of a pivoted stand to attach the plane to the cloudy base, which allows the plane to be angled like this:

horizontal_05

Or maybe even like this…

vertical_15

(TornadoDimpsEdition)

First 4 Figures has also gone back to ‘Regular and Exclusive’ variants, meaning that two versions of the piece are up for grabs. The Exclusive edition (limited to 450 pieces) will set your bank account back $329.99. As you can probably see, like many other of First 4 Figures’ exclusive pieces, LEDs have been incorporated into this version of the statue.

vertical_26

The Regular version (1000 pieces) is $30 cheaper at $299.99, but has no LEDs incorporated into the design.

vertical_08

First 4 Figures says that the statue is due to ship in Q4 of this year, so there’s still time yet to get the rings together to buy this beast. There is also the option to utilise the company’s ‘flexipay’ method, to spread the cost a little more finely.

New GE Animation items revealed: Eggman and Chaos 0 Plushes

GE Entertainment, that company who has gone a spree of creating awesome plushes over the past few years have revealed the latest additions to their Sonic the Hedgehog plush range. One you could argue was inevitable, and the other comes totally out of left field.

Introducing GE’s plushes of Chaos 0 and classic Dr. Eggman. According to GE, both Dr. Eggman and Chaos will be a bit of a bigger plush than what we’re used to from GE measuring about 14 inches tall (opposed to the 8-9 inches that most of their plushes are).

Eggman is sporting a particularly egg-shaped frame, complete with felt moustache and shiny glasses. Chaos is… well just look at him! Water detailing, big bulbous eyes and brain… What’s not to like? This would also probably the first pieces of dedicated Chaos merchandise… Probably ever (unless memory fails me).

No details on cost or anything just yet, but we can expect the plushes to launch later this year.

Jazwares: End of the Road for The Sonic Line?

Jazwares logo

After what seems to have been a long time coming, TSS has learned of another strong reason to suggest that Jazwares has ceased producing items for the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

In a recent Email between merch-seller Ogilvie on the SSMB, his distributor of Jazwares merchandise has said that the company will no longer be carrying Sonic the Hedgehog Merchandise.

Following the news that the Sonic the Hedgehog section of Jazwares’ website seemed to have vanished not long ago, it’s yet another strong reason to believe that the once very active line of toys has come to an end.

Jazwares has been producing Sonic merchandise (primarily articulated action figures) from as early as 2009 when they produced their 10 inch now-sought-after Metal Sonic figure, so after a near 5 year run, it finally looks to be over.

Were you a fan of the Jazwares Sonic the Hedgehog figures? Got any favourites? Let us know!

Weston Super Sonic 2015

Weston Super Sonic, the South West’s Sonic Convention is only a week away on the 17th, and in the past few months, a plethora of details have been revealed about guests and what kinds of things Sonic fans can do at the event.

The answer to both of these questions is unfortunately not. The convention completely sold out of both premium and free tickets towards the end of last year, and as a result cannot accept any further registrations to attend. There are also no on the door tickets, so it may be worth saving yourself a journey if you haven’t already gotten tickets. Thankfully, the awesome peeps at The Sonic Show will be live streaming directly from the convention space so you can see all the action as it takes place.

I’ve got tickets! Where do I go?

NEW YEAR’S F*CKING EVE

Biafra Republic will be streaming all of your favorite SEGA and Sonic songs non-stop from A/V Hijack’s HQ in Galveston County, TX, starting at 2PM GMT (8AM US Central/6AM Pacific), and keep on streaming into 2015, ending approximately 8:30AM GMT (2:30AM US Central/12:30AM Pacific).

In keeping with tradition that started last year, this stream will also be a benefit stream, with the proceeds going to the wonderful people at Child’s Play. Also, like last year, there will be orum Badges for those board members who provide their forum profiles in the donation comments. Last year, without any advertising outside of here, Twitter, and SSMB, we raised US$72 for charity. This year, they hope to beat that.

To encourage this, prizes will be given away via Steam to those who donate. What prizes, you ask?

  • 4 prizes of 1 random Genesis-era game each
  • 1 prize of a copy of Sonic Adventure DX
  • 1 prize of a copy of Sonic Adventure 2 and a special surprise!
  • 1 prize is a super-special SEGA-related surprise (too special to be revealed here)!

So, get going, people. Here is the button again, back for a second round of donations

The event is also listed on the Child’s Play Event Calendar. Yay! Also, I may be adding in more Steam gifts as prizes, depending on how work fares. Stay tuned!

Sonic and Flash 2: This time with added Madness

Screen Shot 2014-11-07 at 12.22.27

After the response of my last little article on the subject of Sonic’s history with Flash movies, you guys made one thing abundantly clear. There’s way too many classics out there to be covered by just one post!

So here I am with ‘episode 2’ of the often insane world of Sonic the Hedgehog’s animated flash adventures. Let’s waste no time…

Sonic Breaks his Neck (Splapp-Me-Do 2006)

Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 23.23.34

Who’s stupid idea was it to put items in TV screens?

In this rather grotesque little movie, we see Sonic out for a pleasant jog in Green Hill Zone. Things are just peachy until real-world logic starts to take effect, and Sonic’s pals come to learn and mourn (or… celebrate for the most part) the untimely death of Mobius’ greatest hero.

From a personal standpoint, I’m not the biggest fan of the presentation style and what happens as a whole, but the surrealist look and nature of the animation has won it a place in the hearts of Flash lovers everywhere.

Interesting tid-bit of trivia: Splapp-Me-Do was also responsible for that ‘impossible quiz’ that was showing up everywhere once upon a time, and actually featured a round based on this very flash!

Sonic Oddball Crackups (Big Papa Kitsune 2005-2011)

Part 1Part 2AdvancePrequel

If you read my thoughts in the last article, you’ll know very well that I love a raw, unpolished flash movie. Right here, we have a whole collection of shorts that are gleefully crazy, and with a whole host of different characters. There’s a real Robot Chicken type feel to the comedy here.

The series spanned for several instalments, and then even transitioned into ‘Advance’ territory in later episodes, but still retaining that same sense of crude craziness.

Keep an eye out for MJ in the second episode… ;)

Tails and His GBA (RupeeClock 2005 – 2006)

Part 1Part 2Part 3

Screen Shot 2014-11-07 at 12.16.58

Here’s one of my favourites.

In this small series of 3 flash movies, Tails has invented a special Gameboy Advance that not only plays great games on the go, but can also transport the players directly into the game itself! The word gets out, and soon, everyone wants a look, often ending in catastrophic (but often hilarious) results!

This is probably one of my all time favourite flash films that are based around the animation of sprites. The Sonic Advance sprites have always been very expressive, and they naturally lend themselves well when utilised in smart comedy as seen in these films. Each instalment is short and very easy to watch, so go take a look!

Sonic Movie Madness (Roger van der Weide 2004 – 2005)

Ep 1Ep 2Ep 3.1.1Ep 3.1.2Ep 3.2Finale

 Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 23.33.13

This one is very… Hard to explain.  Awesome, but hard to explain.

All the teams from Sonic Heroes all go on various movie themed adventures, from Star Wars to Harry Potter, with what could be the largest cast of characters ever assembled into a single Sonic the Hedgehog flash series.

As insane as this whole set up is, all the various storylines tie together really quite cleverly, ending in a very surreal, but awesome finale.

The drawing style in the animation could be seen as loose and unrefined, but everything in it is consistent, and gives the whole series a solid sense of identity that no other flash movie has tried (or probably ever will) match.

Creator Roger van-der Weide has gone on to do several works since this series, including multiple ‘Sonic Game in X minutes’ shorts, as well as a new Youtube Series known as ‘Sonic Dissected’.

Ultimate Flash Sonic (Dennis Gid 2004)

 Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 23.31.02

Moving away from the movies, let’s look at the legendary Flash game ‘Ultimate Flash Sonic’, something I believe to still be a truly impressive example of what can be possible in Flash with enough dedication.

The game is a ground-up creation (with the exception of the artwork assets that are borrowed from Sonic Advance 2), featuring great action, speed, loops, grind rails and plenty more.

Remembering that this was released 10 years ago, this game features a truly staggering amount of features given when it was created. It featured 4 characters to choose from which all played differently, 4 playable action stages with two boss stages, a password system and even unlockable characters that also play in their own unique way.

The gameplay nowadays could be seen as unpolished and possibly clunky (especially given the huge debate about what constitutes ‘good’ 2D Sonic gameplay in recent years), but it’s still a great game at its core, and has been reposted to tons of flash game sites for a reason.

Go play it!

And with that, there’s the end of another instalment of Sonic and Flash. Again, this list is in no way exhaustive, so feel free to chat about more of your favourites in the comments below! If response is strong enough, expect a part 3!
