Sonic The Hedgehog Interactive Annual Coming August 2013

sonicannual

Well they certainly kept this one quiet! Pedigree Books have announced that they will be releasing a new Sonic The Hedgehog Interactive Annual which is expected in stores this August. However, this isn’t just your typical annual or yearbook, this one has a special party trick. It takes advantage of Augmented Reality.

If you have a smart phone or another device that can perform this party piece, if you hold it above certain pages, you’ll be treated to additional content such as stories, activities, annimations, puzzles and even extended character profiles. Pedigree claims 20% of the book will have the ability to do this.

The range will be sold alongside other franchises and be catergorised as ‘Super Interactive Annuals’ and will go on sale this August. No details on prices or if this would be released worldwide were given, however odds are you’ll probably find a comic book store or online bookshop that might be willing to import it for you.

As a bit of trivia, to my knowledge, the last time a Sonic annual/yearbook came out was back in 1992, twenty one years ago… if you are old enough to remember seeing these in bookshops, high-five… that was a totally radical time.

Update: Sonic Lost World Release Date Is Holiday 2013

Sonic Lost World

Update: It would appear that Gonintendo got it wrong. The game does not yet have a firm release date, the only date given is ‘holiday 2013.’

Original Story: According to a Press Release sent to gonintendo.com. Sonic Lost World will be released a lot sooner than expected, on October 13th for both the Wii U and 3DS. Odds are this is the US release since EU games are typically released on a Friday, no news yet on special/limited editions, but we’ll keep you updated if anything new comes.

The escalator will take you under it’s own power to the desired floor destination. Travel both up and down, no online pass required, multiplayer mode is supported with aproximately 20-30 people able to use the esculator at a time with a co-op mode for parents with small children.

The escalator has a built in safety cut off switch and emergency power off button. This is designed to prevent injury in case of emergency, such as a badnik attack. The views from the escalator are catered to the videogaming individual, with directions to various exhibits and demonstration booths, as well as merchandise and refreshments stalls.

“Oh Yeah!” Sonic 4 & Sonic CD coming to the Ouya!

Sonic-the-Hedgehog-4-Episode-2-logo

If you havn’t heard of the Ouya yet, you probably won’t care much about this particular bit of news, and if you don’t know what Ouya is, then you might want to look it up.

Anyway, on june 27th, Sega is going to release three Sonic games on the system, they include, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (episode 1 & 2) and Sonic CD, all of which have been optimised for Ouya’s Tegra 3 processor.

The interesting part about this deal is the change in strategy. When players download the titles, they will be able to play a the first levels of Sonic 4 episode 1 and Sonic CD for free, and the first two levels of Sonic 4 Episode 2 for free. If they like the game, they can purchase the full game later on.

Each game will cost $6.99 each. The deal is only for these three titles and there was no mention of plans to expand the number of Sega games at this time.

So… anyone here actually getting an Ouya?

NKOK Teases New Sonic Toys

At the start of the year, you might remember how toy maker NKOK dropped hints that they were making a new line of Sonic toys based off Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed? Well following an update to their website, we can confirm that this is indeed the case as well as one or two other suprises.

Their website not only depicts the older toys, but also has listings for several new products, unfortunately none of which had images to acompany them. However, the descriptions give you a very good idea as to what to expect.

Slot Car Racing Toys

Battery Opperated Sonic & Shadow Slot Car Race Set

Battery Opperated Sonic & Tails Slot Car Race Set. (Approximately 8 feet of track)

Hand Crank Generator Sonic & Shadow Super Loop Set (This product is based on ASRT vehicles)

Light & Sound Pullback Vehicles

Pullback ASRT Sonic.

Pullback ASRT Tails.

Pullback ASRT Shadow.

As mentioned before, no images acompany the descriptions, however, the fact that these products are on the website would suggest licensing permission has been granted. No price or release dates were given, however, typically, NKOK toys have been released worldwide.

Following on from todays debut trailer for Sonic Lost World, it seems that IGN have also quietly posted a screenshot of what appears to be the 3DS version of the game.

From the looks of things, it’s a side scroller much like how the 3DS version of Sonic Generations was. Of course, with todays trailer completely shattering expectations, your guess is as good as mine at this point.

Furthermore, Executive Editor for IGN Rich George has said on twitter that more Lost World news will be posted later today.

SEGA’s Super Sonic Raceway Experience at… Mercedes Benz World?

sonicproducts-1905154

*holds hands up* I’ve tried, I promise you I have tried to find out as much as possible with this one, but I’m still at a bit of a loss when it comes to details and specifics. According to a handful or reports online. Sega have been holding a special Sonic event at Benz World. Not heard of Benz World? You know Mercedes Benz? Yes the car, they have a ‘Driving Experience Centre’ at a race course here in the UK. And, for some reason, Sega held a special day there.

Sega had a small presence there during this month in which they had face painting, showed off various Sonic products from the 2013 catalogue as well as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. One of the more interesting products would be an unannounced Sonic Pinball game which you can see at the top.

As of yet theres no official screenshots but that hasn’t stopped someone from uploading one or two screens of the game. According to one user the game has a few more breakable walls which are most likely included due to the spindash being in this version, as well as a “fish eye lense feature.”

Lew Stringer’s Original Sonic the Comic Pitch

I’m a big fan of Fleetways Sonic the Comic, I’m always interested in finding out about it’s creation, the staff who worked on the comic as well as ideas which were changed or just never came to light for whatever reason. As you probably know, writer Lew Stringer had a long run on STC, he held position as a writer for years and became a fan favourite with many readers, his scripts were often unique and very entertaining. Even if you don’t consider them ‘main stories’ they were well contained, entertaining, full of humor and were a welcome break from the main narrative that the comic was doing at the time.

UNUSED_SONIC1

But… did you know that he originally applied to be an artist? And that his original pitch samples still exist? As I said at the start, I’m a big fan of STC, so I’ve heard of other artists being asked or attempting to get onto the team (one artist had an idea to make a ‘noir’ style Sonic, but that story is for another day), but I’ve never seen any real examples of artwork.

The Vault: Giochi Preziosi’s Sonic Promotion/The Revenge of The Hog with the Death Ray Eyes

In 2009, I found a youtube video which at the time had only a handful of views, the video showed an old Italian TV advert which was a promotion for Sega and the release of Sonic 1 in Italy. The promotion was basically ‘Buy a Sega Megadrive and get a free pin badge which gives you the chance to win win Sega prizes.’

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViOn4dmuKn0

The advert quickly became quite notorious, mainly due to the ending which featured an out of tune Sonic theme and an animation of a miscoloured Sonic with glowing red eyes pulling a goofy expression. Even TSS featured it, lovingly calling it ‘The Hog with the Death Ray Eyes.’ To date the pin badge is known as ‘The Sonic Baydge’ by various merch collectors and amazingly, they still work as they did back in 1992, when you consider this is over 20 years old, thats quite impressive.

Since 2009 the details of the promotion have remained a bit of a mystery… Until today…

The annual fan convention Summer of Sonic has updated it’s website, and things are a bit darker than normal. In what will be the conventions 6th year a teaser site has gone live which doesn’t show us much, but there are one or two clues. Most noticably are tiny outlines of Sonic & Metal Sonic along the bottom of the site and do we need to point out the matrix style numbers in the background?

Update: “It’s a glitch” Sonic 4’s Website is Down, Speculation is Up.

Sonic-4-Episode-2

Update: According to our resident tech guru Bmn, It’s a glitch. What’s specifically happening is a recurring loop of redirects between www.sonicthehedgehog4.com/us and www.sega.com/sonic4, which suggests minor technical problem. But still, to leave it like that for nearly a week? So there you have it.

Original Story: Regardless as to what you may think of the game. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 happened, it’s still for sale on several online services and is far from what you would consider to be an old game.

So why then has the official website been taken down and why has it remained offline for the best part of a week? SSMB member -Bender- first noticed that the site had gone dark a few days ago and whilst sometimes sites can go down for a day or two, this site has been offline for nearly a week if not longer.

New ASRT Patch Goes Live Monday

The updates feature lots of tucks and tweaks, should address many of the issues you’ve reported to us and also pull in improvements we’ve been doing on PC. Don’t expect any extra tracks or characters though, just before you ask…!

Those are the words of Executive Producer Steve Lycett on the Sega forums yesterday. The PS3 & Xbox 360 versions of the game are to get a second patch next Monday which will follow a little later on the Wii-U.

No patch notes have been released just yet. However from the language used, (“tucks and tweaks”) it sounds like as well as a bug fix, the patch might also alter some of the balancing or even difficulty of the game.

Jazwares Toy Fair 2013 Booth, New Toys Confirmed!

A couple of days ago I posted a roundup of all the Sonic related merchandise news I could find at the New York Toy Fair, in that post I mentioned that there was another toy fair in Nuremberg about a week prior and how Sega/Jazwares had a very big Sonic presence, but no photos of the event had come to light… until now.

A fellow merch collector over at Spindash.de was at the event and took a rather large selection of photos, including the contents of the Jazwares booth, which was displaying several toys that have yet to be announced.

Sonic at Toy Fair 2013 Round Up

jazzwarestoyfair2013

As mentioned a few days ago, the annual New York Toy Fair (NYTF) was held this week. Why is this a big deal? Well, for toy makers who have a license to make Sonic toys, this is the one of the best chances for them to promote their upcoming toys to retailers, buyers and the press. To compare it to videogames, this Toy Fair is the toy version of an event like E3.

In the last two years, NYTF booths have had a big Sonic presence at them and this years was no exception. However, unlike previous years in which Jazwares’ booth accidentally (though it wasn’t clear at the time) spoilt the announcement of Sonic Generations, security on unannounced products has been quite tight, very few photographs have been taken of the new merchandise… but that doesn’t mean we didn’t discover a few new things you might find of interest.
