Lost Hedgehog Tales Begins Updating

Ever wondered what would have happened if the Super Genesis Wave hadn’t happened? This behind the scenes look will shed some light!

LHT Logo

There is now a dedicated webspace for Lost Hedgehog Tales, and the first chapter has been uploaded. For those who are unaware, the Archie Sonic comic faced a rollercoaster of events around the #225-250 both within the comic pages and in real life. The result of these changes ranged from slight delays to reformatting to the most famous result of initiating the Super Genesis Wave that essentially reset the multiverse. Lost Hedgehog Tales is an unofficial document, being written by official head writer Ian Flynn, about the original plans for that period, and for the road all the way down to #300, as well as some specific points that need a bit more detail to cover.

The first chapter is a sort of prologue to ease us into the general changes made between #225 and #247 (and before the future issue plans became completely shelved). To summarise the points briefly;

  • Foreshadowing to the Death Egg came as early as #183; the Bunker Eggman retreated to after Enerjak destroyed New Megaopolis was the site of its ongoing construction.
  • He wanted the #225-275 period be about breaking up the team and watching them pull themselves back together slowly, as the heroes hadn’t been too set back before that point.
  • Sally was originally to be roboticised by the end of #225, but SEGA wanted an arc for the 20th anniversary, and “Genesis” was put between #225-229 instead. There were talks of that being used as a point to reboot the comic, but that obviously didn’t happen.
  • Antoine could have been outright killed off in #234 instead of badly injured for his sacrifice to be a rallying point for the team, but the fan reaction to Mecha Sally and his injuries was bigger than expected, so it was agreed that he was best left alive.
  • Team Fighters were originally going to meet Hershey St. John in #237-238 to gear up for “Secret Freedom” in Sonic Universe; she would have faked her death, infiltrated Razorklaw’s Dark Egg Legion chapter, but not been able to report the fact she was alive to Geoffrey. She would have learned of Geoffrey’s alliance with Naugus from the Fighters and headed home.
  • “Heroes” was originally going to be between #239-241, because the editor wanted a bigger push for the three teams (Fighters, Freedom and Secret) and to have Patrick Spaziente do a triptych cover. Parts 1 and 2 would have been about the missions of Fighters and Freedom going exceptionally well with events mysteriously happening in their favour, while part 3 would have shown how the Secret Freedom Fighters were behind said good events in those missions. Then the Olympics loomed and Archie, SEGA and McDonald’s needed a tie-in for their promotion, so this got condensed to two issue with the Secret stuff being mixed in with the Fighters and Freedom mission stories.
  • #241 ended up being a mix (all in one story, “Unraveling”). Part of it was a story that was planned to be a series of 5-page back-up showing the scenes Naugus went through as he tried desperately to hold onto power. Originally, Naugus would have simply tricked Geoffrey by playing on his sympathies in his dire situation, but the editor felt that too be too weak a resolution and had him possess Geoffrey instead.
  • Ian originally wanted the #242 Olympic promotion to feature a main comic tie-in story, for a small obstacle for Team Fighters to fight before getting to the “Endangered Species” arc. The Krudzu Hybrid Hydra was selected to tangle with them (having last appeared in the Free Comic Book Day 2010 issue). This didn’t pan out as the Olympic story ended up taking all the pages, so the story was transplanted into #241 to provide the other part.
  • “At All Costs” was originally going to be a consecutive 2-issue story marked the beginning of the upswing to the Freedom Fighters’ plight. But then the legal settlement meant critical characters and plot points were inaccesible which nulled much of the build-up, and Archie were asked by Capcom and SEGA to do a crossover (At All Costs ended up being 2 issues either side of said crossover, and there was no upswing as the second part showed Sonic first getting to grips with the new reality).
  • Ian had 4-5 months to both plan out the crossover and plot out the new universe by this point. Meshing these, and the differences between Sonic’s convuluted lore and Mega Man’s under-developed lore, was the big challenge until he recalled the Genesis Wave he’d introduced way back in “Genesis”.

But this is hardly the end of the line. With so much planned before all the shenanigans in real life happened, this is only the tip of the iceberg. I implore you to read the document fully for yourself for some insights not covered by this summary, and be on the lookout for more juicy updates as Ian hopes he can update Lost Hedgehog Tales on a fairly steady basis. Certainly something to look forward to!

Sonic Runners Might Be Unfairly Banning Users

Sonic_Runners_Team_Heroes

It’s been no secret that Sonic Runners isn’t afraid to swing the ban hammer, one of the earliest exploits from the soft launch resulted in many early players finding themselves locked out of the game for discovering that they could effectively get an infinite wisp power for an entire run.

But in the last week, even legitimate players have found themselves victim of the ban hammer, in the last 7 days, we have received a very high number of reports from Sonic Runners players who claim they have been effectively banned from the game or had major restrictions placed on their accounts, the reason according to Sega is that they detected ‘irregularities’ in their accounts which violated the terms of service.

This is despite the fact that they claim to have never cheated or used any other exploits in order to gain an unfair advantage in the game. When users dispute this with Sega, Sega’s response is either completely vague, non existent, or in some cases suggests that the reps they are speaking with have absolutely no knowledge of the game and are in fact making up their replies to get rid of the customer and their complaint.

How are Sega Banning Players?

Previously, Sega were just banning players, there was no ‘well you can still access this…’ banned meant banned, the most memorable case of mass bans was from an early exploit which allowed users to get a near unlimited wisp power up.

runnersbanned0

People who abused this exploit found this message when trying to access the game. But sine the worldwide launch, this seems to have changed.

How Are Sega ‘Banning’ Users Now?

Sega are now moving users who break the TOS onto a ‘cheaters server,’ think of it like the ‘bad sport’ servers that RockStar use for GTA V or the ‘cheaters servers’ for Max Payne 3, you can still play the game, but you have to compete with other people who have also cheated in some way, this could be by using save file exploits/hacks, or a shippable bug/exploit which has come about in an update.

The problem is that being in this server/group also cuts you out of getting weekly ranking rewards and may also restrict future special events/rewards. You’re effectively banned from accessing rewards for legitimate play, but you can still play the game, and yes you can still spend real world money.

Why Are Fans So Angry/Upset At Sega’s Support?

Let’s start with the most unbelievable part of all this, Sega’s own support team apparent lack of even the most basic knowledge of the game, to the point where you have to question if the staff are in some cases making up advice to customers asking for help.

This is the support ticket that one user sent to help.sega.net.

segasupport1

Seems reasonable and easy to understand right? The game is clearly listed, details of the device and operating system are present. The problem is also clearly listed, it shouldn’t require in-depth knowledge of the game to answer this question.

So how did Sega reply to his problem? With this.

segasupport2

Lets just put aside the ‘did this person really cheat’ question for now. Let’s just look at what Sega said. “After cheating has been discovered, they will not be able to participate in […] joining or creating a guild.”

I am at a loss as to how someone can make that mistake, especially given that position that they work in, you don’t even have to play Sonic Runners, just start it up and get to the main menu to see that you can’t join, or create, or participate in a guild…

Because Sonic Runners doesn’t have guilds.

The second issue here is that Sega offered no details as to what this person allegedly did, they just said ‘our system said you cheated, the restrictions will not be reversed.’ So even if this person did cheat or use an exploit, they have no means to inform anyone else exactly what is or isn’t allowed.

Now, this is just one persons claim, they might be making it up or trying to claim innocence right? Well… that might be the case, however it’s a lot harder to dismiss this case.

Twitter user StarlightAurora claims to prefer Power Characters, so following the release of new Halloween companions they tweeted their entire experience of playing Sonic Runners using a new combination of companions with characters who boost enemy kill scores, including the moment when Sega auto banned them from the game.

After filling a support ticket with Sega, this was Sega’s reply.

runnersbanned6

There’s that phrase again, irregularities in the account. No details as to exactly what this user did, no details as to what part of the TOS they broke, absolutely no useful information, despite their system being able to tell that they did break the TOS.

These are all screenshots from players who claim to have been banned from Sonic Runners, despite never having cheated or using any kind of exploit in the game. All of these have come from the last few days.

Why Are People Being Banned?

Based on the reports that users are posting on our own forums, twitter and various other social media outlets. Sonic Runners appears to have in place some kind of auto ban function, when a user obtains a high score, unsure if it’s within a specific period of time, or if there is a so called ‘magic number’ which when hit results in the user being banned.

But every report made so far indicates that the users obtained a super high score or a huge personal best which resulted in a ban from the main game, they now have to play with users who have cheated in some way.

sonicrunners2

How Is This Happening?

At the moment, nobody can say for sure, but some people are pointing the finger at Sega’s own events.

Currently there is a Halloween event taking place and one of the companion rewards ‘King Boom Boo’ is apparently very broken, especially when paired up with a power character who offers an enemy destruction bonus, like Halloween Omega.

For example, before Halloween, a good player might be able to hit the 1 million point mark by the time they reached the first Eggman boss fight. Following the Halloween Event, due to the nature of the new Halloween Companions bonuses, it’s possible for a novice player to get over 3 million points in the first 3 seconds of the game. You can imagine how much an expert player can get in a 30min long game.

But the madness doesn’t end there. On top of this, there is/has been a 2X ring event, so scores are going even higher and with new characters/companions who boost ring scores, they too are falling victim to the ban hammer.

The problem here according to some long term Sonic Runners players, is that the new companions are so badly balanced, combined with the new character bonuses, that they’re obtaining mega high bonuses/huge amount of points in a short period of time, that the game things they are cheating and as a result they are being put into the cheaters server and are restricted from reviving weekly rewards from their rightful ranking board.

Despite claiming that they have never cheated or broken the TOS in any way.

How Can You Prevent an ‘Unfair Ban?’

With Sega’s support offering no help or even any indication as to what exactly players have done to break the TOS, many users who have found themselves in the cheaters server are advising other users not to use any new companions or characters, some are going as far to deliberately keep their scores below 10 million which seems to be a safer means to play the game long term.

However the key here is Sega, they need to be a lot more open with exactly what is going on in Sonic Runners and be much more open with how players have apparently broken the TOS because right now many players are baffled as to what it is they did wrong.

We’ll keep you upto date with any new information as and when we get it.

Dare I ask if anyone reading this has found themselves victim of the Runners ban hammer? Let us know in the comments.

TSS Review: Sonic Dash 2 Sonic Boom

Sonic Dash 2

If there’s one thing Sonic Dash 2 has, it’s an uphill battle to prove itself as a high quality mobile game. Not only does it have to live up to the original Sonic Dash, a highly successful Sonic mobile game with over 140 million downloads and a large cast of SegaSonic characters, but it has to rise above the stench left by Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. Has Hardlight Studios made a true successor to the original, or has the Boom curse hit once again?

Hardlight does a lot to make Sonic Dash 2 differentiate from it’s predecessor while using the same basic controls. You still swipe left and right to change lanes, swipe up to jump, swipe down to spindash and double tap to do a dash once you dash meter is full. You also have random missions to complete just as the first, but that’s about it. If there’s one thing Sonic Dash 2 does well, it’s packs a lot of originality into a genre that’s been done to death.

Sonic Dash 2.1
Not all at once though. This fake screenshot is misleading.

The first thing you’ll notice is that after you get an extra character (Amy or Knuckles very early on), you can switch to that character after going into a cave and banking some rings. This way, you can play up to three characters in one run. Each character also has their own attributes. Sonic is a ring magnet when Dashing, Knuckles can ground-pound enemies to help build up combos, Amy can turn enemies into rings while dashing, Sticks keeps enemy combos from breaking if you get hit and Tails gets you an extra revive. These can be important depending on what events or missions you’ll be taking on.

Speaking of Events and Missions, there’s a lot here to keep you coming back. Missions are constant little goals you can do in the regular part of the game for rewards. Mostly easy goals like “jump 25 times times in one run” or “smash 20 robots”. You can play in mission mode pretty much all day with no limits on lives so you can work on your high score. Pretty generous compared to what you get from other “free to Play” games. Event mode is limited as you need tickets to play, but it tends to pay out bigger rewards. When in this mode, you can to spend an event ticket to take on a challenge. You are usually limited to 4 tickets, but more are earned through time. These events can take awhile to accomplish, but there’s usually mini-goals along the way. For instance, you might have to bank 2500 rings. This is a big task, but you get rewarded with prizes for hitting 10% of the goal, 25%, 40% and so on. There’s also the daily event of Score Chaser. This is where your global score really matters. The better your score or the closer you are to reaching your event goal, the higher your prize is.

Need help with event goals or high scores? Call in the sprites. Everyday, you will get at least one sprite you can use either by checking in daily or getting them as prizes for finishing events. Sprites are basically the same as the Chao you get in games like Sonic Runners or Sonic Jump (Since Sonic Boom is a spin-off, I guess they decided to go with different creatures.) Sprites can be either a one time use, or permanent ones you can upgrade and evolve. One time use sprites can do things such as give you an extra revive or double your score bonus while permanent sprites will give you smaller boosts you can upgrade such as building the dash bar faster or enerbeams appearing twice as often. Once you’ve upgraded a sprite, you can evolve it further by combining three sprites together into one. Although initially, you can only use one sprite at a time, you can add up to two more by spending red rings. Sprites are great for offering a bonus towards goals and can be a great way to add strategy to your gameplay.

EnerbeamBut enough of the minute details, how does the game play? Well it plays a lot like Sonic Dash. Duh!

Okay, okay, there’s a bit more to it than that of course. While you do the usual bit of dodging left to right, jumping over obstacles and spindashing enemies, you also have a new game play moment where you can swing on your enerbeams and collect rings and dash orbs high in the air. This part offers a different set of controls as you tilt your device left and right to collect the bits. It’s a short diversion but a very welcome change of pace even if brief.

The one thing I’ll say is that it seems like it gets more difficult quicker than the previous Sonic Dash. About three levels in you’ll be having to quickly dodge trees and watch out for charging Motobugs. (I think this is the first time in the Sonic franchise where Motobugs have been a real threat.) But don’t feel discouraged. Leveling up your characters and sprites will help balance out the difficulty and help you towards a nice, high score.

You say “That’s all very well and good Jason, but what about the economy in the game”? Don’t worry Sonic Runners players, you won’t be abused here. First, let’s discuss red rings. At first, they are given out pretty generously since the game wants you to buy your first character right away. You have your choice between Amy or Knuckles at 30 rings each while Sticks is 50 rings and Tails with his extra revive ability, is an expensive 70 rings. After a short while, red rings will be harder and harder to come by, but not so much that you feel cheated. Usually, you can find at least one red ring on the field every time you play the game (just keep a lookout or you can accidentally pass it up). You’ll also get red rings on occasion for doing missions, events and just playing each day. In fact, if you play it frequent enough, you should have the entire cast within a month of playing. But red rings are for more than just characters. You can spend 15 rings to add an extra slot for a sprite or to top out your upgraded character. You can also spend red rings on revives if you’ve run out of ads to watch. As of right now, it’s a pretty fair economy. You can spend $5 for 28 rings or $20 for 130 rings. That’s enough rings to get you the other 3 characters available right away! That’s a better offer than a half dozen or more chances on a roulette wheel and possibly ending up with nothing. Plus, it never feels like you HAVE to buy these rings. As I’ve said before, the amount you earn is gradual, but fair.

TailsDashThe one thing where Hardlight is really pushing you to buy is the “Boom Boost”. For $1.99, you can add an extra revive, more chances at sprites and up to 6 tickets for events. A very good deal if it was permanent, but sadly it only lasts a week and then you’d have to pay again. It gets annoying as they advertise this to your face quite a bit. However, I always believe you should support a FTP game if you enjoy it, so I’d recommend trying it at least once. There are definitely worse deals out there.

While I’m finding the game pretty enjoyable and the events addicting, there are some negative points I’d like to address. Please note that much like the original Sonic Dash, any nitpicks I have now could possibly be fixed in the near future as these games tend to evolve and improve greatly over time (unless that game is called “Sonic Runners”).

First off is the graphics. While it can be highly detailed (especially in the backgrounds), the cost is a lower frame rate. Sonic Dash 2 plays at 30 FPS while the original plays at a solid 60 FPS. Also, the amount of detail can vary depending on what device you are using. so if you have a more low end device, you could get less palm trees and more N64 fog. Also, the background music is just the same high speed chorus over and over again. Only changing characters in the caves gives you some relief from that overdone tune. Add an extra tune for the different environment and I think it would work out better. Speaking of environments, I really feel this game could at least use one more. You’re going from jungle to village and back again over and over. I know you kinda did the same thing in the Seaside Hill level of Sonic Dash, but the more open environment made it feel more natural. I know the Sonic Boom cartoon is limited on environments, but adding something like the canyon area would help give the game a little more variety to it. One other thing this game is lacking over the first one is boss battles. While that came later on in the first Dash as well, it feels weird not having it in this one, especially since Eggman taunts you at the very beginning of the game. A boss battle would definitely help change things up a bit.

But those are just nitpicks. The most valid complaint is just how glitchy this game can be sometimes. Several times, I’ve had to reset the game due to being stuck in the environment. Every single time, it was to do with the enerbeam mini-game. It doesn’t happen too often, but every time it’s due to that part. Considering that’s the exact part where the glitch happens, you’d think Q&A would have had that bug nabbed by now.

That said, Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom is a solid mobile title with plenty of goals to keep you busy and adds a lot more variety than the original Dash. However, the first one had a ton of characters to choose from while this one just has the main five. The good news is, there’s more characters on the way (Metal and Shadow most likely). Also, the game has a good economic system in place that doesn’t feel like it’s ripping you off. It’s hard to review mobile games like this (especially when they’re new) as they tend to change and improve (or get worse) over time. I hope people look past the bad taste Rise of Lyric left in their mouths and don’t just ignore the game on it’s brand alone because this is the best Sonic Boom title by far. Although I’ll admit, that’s not saying much.

This is the first thing which came into mind when I read the interview which has inspired me to write this.

Given the reaction from the community, I think it’s worth talking about. At least I’d like to talk about it, mainly because I for one am in the odd position of… not entirely knowing what to think about it, well actually, that’s a small lie. I do but, each time I try to get either angry or ‘oh good on Sega’ I start to think more about it and basically come to the mindset of, ‘yeah yeah…’ Or something which Sega has been doing a lot lately which I’m calling ‘words‘.

TSS Timeline: The Year 2002

This is part of an ongoing series of features that looks back on the history of The Sonic Stadium, written by Dreadknux. You can find out more about how this website changed the Sonic community, what it looked like back in the day, and even special images and update notes from the archive.

ssnglayout-2002-06-thumb

Sonic Stadium News Group

TSS’ 2002 can largely be summed up by the launch (and subsequent un-launch) of the Sonic Stadium News Group. SSNG was a merger of the Sonic Stadium and another fansite, Sonic News. The idea was, that I would provide the information pages and web design and Sonic_Hedgehogs (Sonic News’ owner) would provide the rolling daily updates and news.

We went through a number of designs before we landed on the right one – the home page in particular would undergo a couple of format alterations, as you can see below. For SSNG, we wanted to give our merged site its own colourful-yet-atmospheric feel. The Sonic Stadium would end up hosting the project, with a lot of content from Sonic News moved across. The SSMB Forums also got design and name changes, which were not well received from long-time users.

The site was launched close to Sonic the Hedgehog’s 11th Anniversary, in June – and lasted approximately two weeks before the entire thing was shut down and thrown in the proverbial bin. One of the major reasons for this involved allegations of plagiarism from users of another Sonic fansite, Sonic HQ. It turned out that the source of some of the Sonic News material had been called into question. It didn’t help that many of the pages on SSNG used backgrounds that were already being used by, or were created by, Sonic HQ as well – a design snafu on my part.

On top of this, Sonic_Hedgehogs had been absent throughout the ordeal, and updates were not as frequent as originally planned. Having dealt with the fallout almost on my own, there was little that I could do to salvage the project other than kill it entirely. I took a short break due to the exhaustion, and later decided to revive The Sonic Stadium instead of letting the story end on such a low note. I changed the SSNG design slightly, making sure to remove all the offending content, before starting work on a proper reboot of the site.

The Sonic Stadium Reboot

Before the launch of SSNG, The Sonic Stadium saw another design change, with a rounded content area and navy-blue corners and a three-column design on the homepage. The second image above is what TSS looked like during the aftermath of SSNG, with various hijacked elements of the merged site design and a removal of various other things.

But, things started picking up after SSNG’s demise which led to a reboot and complete design refresh in October. Zifei, the founder of Sonic HQ, offered to host the reborn TSS on his personal server, telling me that he believed in my vision for this site to become the best resource for Sonic the Hedgehog online. That’s some high praise indeed. After officially quitting and retiring Sonic News, Sonic_Hedgehogs came back and offered to write for the new Sonic Stadium, and I found a renewed focus to make the best site I possibly could.

Below was the result.

tsslayout-2002-10-thumb

This was the point where I started to build a team to work on the site, to assist me in creating content – although I would still end up doing the editorial content, the Sonic Fan Club segment got some assistance in the form of Fastfeet (Fan Games reporter) and Biafra Republic (Fan Art maintainer). With Sonic_Hedgehogs on news, the presence of the team allowed me to broaden the site and cover other high profile Sonic Team games, as well as go full pelt on Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Mega Collection coverage.

Ultimately, the redesign did the trick – TSS’ reputation went up massively upon the relaunch and with a steady stream of content, there was a huge surge in visits and popularity from November onwards.

Unofficial SEGA Magazine

This year saw the introduction of the Unofficial SEGA Magazine, which was a digital fanzine created by SonicVerse Team. It was originally exclusive to the fansite Sonic News, but since the launch of SSNG became a part of The Sonic Stadium. It was a valiant attempt at re-igniting the fire of SEGA fans, but due to the huge task of building each issue with limited resources the project only last for three (and a half) issues.

2002-battle-winner

Sonic Battle Stadium

The SSMB Forums saw the start of a brand new interactive game, called the Sonic Battle Stadium. I created a basic ruleset for a text-based battle adventure, where forum users could create characters and pick an ‘element’ (similar to Pokemon) as well as a set of moves that they could assign damage points to. Battles would be manually moderated, with referees taking hit points away based on the various conditions that affected play throughout the topic.

Ultimately, players would fight one another and obtain points, with the ultimate goal being the ability to challenge ‘Grandmaster Dreadknux’ at the end of the Season and become the true winner by defeating him. Awards were given out to the overall winner and runner-ups. The Sonic Battle Stadium ran for two years/seasons, with the second season introducing changes to the gameplay in order to make moderating easier – these changes weren’t well received and the lack of activity brought the game to an eventual and early close.

Other Notable Developments

  • We may have ended up discovering something new in Sonic 2 – some remnants of Wood Zone that can be found on any retail cartridge.
  • It was the year of fan creations for sure: TSS was the official home of coverage for the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (which led to our first ever contest), as well as the Sonic Comic Con in late 2002; the Sonic Hoaxers Club brought about many doctored images of classic Sonic games; we went big on fan game reviews and previews; and there were even fan animations in New Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Fight 4 Freedom to talk about.
  • The SSMB Forums moved away from its old ezBoard home and onto a specialist forum software. It was initially moved to YaBB, before making a permanent home with Invision Power Board.
  • The Sonic Site Awards returned for a second year following the success of the 2001 online event. More awards were on offer and the reception was even greater.
  • The Sonic Stadium announced a ‘partnership’ with fellow fansite and creative portal SonicVerse Team this year. SVT’s upcoming online event Sonic Comic Con would be covered by TSS, and we would also have the exclusive on publishing new pages from flagship comic Sonic Shadows.

HAPPY 15TH TSS! Legendary TSS Staff Share Their Fondest Memories

Yes, on this day fifteen years ago The Sonic Stadium opened its virtual doors to the World Wide Web (that’s what we called the Internet that back in 2000). And over the years, I and a trusty team of awesome Sonic fans have done our best to entertain, inform and excite with news, features, columns, podcasts and videos of anything involved with everyone’s favourite hedgehog.

We started life as a simple fansite, formed of a collection of HTML pages. After several failed attempts, we added a successful forum in the SSMB. We grew to build a streaming radio station (which later introduced Sonic-themed podcasts), an annual awards ceremony, a fangame development team, a massive video/music depository and a network that included a fan showcase, video podcasts and competitive Sonic gaming. We also kick-started a series of events in the Summer of Sonic that led to the establishment of a number of fellow fan-run conventions.

We’ve accomplished an awful lot, and yet none of it would be possible without the insane amount of contribution of TSS Network staff, past and present. So to celebrate The Sonic Stadium’s 15th Anniversary, I reached out to a number of our old and current staff and asked them to reminisce and talk about their favourite memories and moments of TSS history. On October 24, The Sonic Stadium Will Be 15 Years Old

15thlogo

Strange Scary, isn’t it? In just four days, this little website about Sonic the Hedgehog will be a decade and a half old. I personally would have spent half my entire existence keeping this thing alive (actually, let’s not think about that bit). It was on that day, 24th October 2000, that The Sonic Stadium was introduced to the world via the wonder of Angelfire‘s then-generous 20MB hosting solutions.

I’m working on a few things to celebrate the week in style, largely involving heady walks down memory lane. Timeline updates, discussions with staff old and new about their favourite memories of the site, hopefully a contest… and a special project that, as you’d expect if you know me by now, is top secret right now (that might not be ready this week though, but definitely soon). It’ll be worth it, I promise.

No, it’s not Sonic Smash Cards.

I’ll be decorating the site soon enough to get everyone into the mood. While you’re here, if you’ve been visiting TSS for a while, feel free to share your memories of this place – favourite features on the site, SSMB threads, SegaSonic Radio podcasts, anything (and if you want to do that on SSMB, you can do it here).

And as always, we’re only here because of you guys. So from the bottom of my heart, on behalf of the TSS team (past and present) thank you so much for your support and for making us your home to talk utter bollocks about a cartoon blue hedgehog for so long. It’s humbling, and I hope to keep this place alive for as long as you guys want it around.

We’ve got some plans for you all. We hope to keep you entertained and informed for many more years to come.

Hardlight Studios Hosting a Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom Periscope Session

Sonic Dash 2 CROP

To celebrate the worldwide launch of Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, Hardlight Studios will be hosting a Periscope session by one of the sound designers on the game.

I’d like to alert you in advance to a Periscope session scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30 am PST (10/21), hosted by one of Hardlight Studios’ sound designers who worked on Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom. He’ll be treating fans to a live guitar performance of several original scores from the game, closing with the widely loved Green Hill Zone theme.

The livestream will be going on via the official Sonic the Hedgehog twitter account: Whilst the press release says ‘Tomorrow’ it also lists October 21st as the date which is in fact Wednesday so we’re not sure what’s going on there.

But if you fancy listening to some music, tune in and check it out.

More 25th Anniversary Licensing Details Discovered at BLE 2015

ble-25th04

We’ve had a few items up this week regarding Brand Licensing Europe, but one thing we’ve not yet told you all is that we actually had someone at Brand Licensing Europe to check out the various booths, the reason being is that in the past not many websites/blogs bother to take pics or cover the Sega booth, so we sent our own guy, despite this year being odd in that Sega decided to advertise their own booth on twitter, our guy was able to take some additional photos and provide some new information.

ble-25th02

The 25th Anniversary area simply had t-shirts, including two of Sonic himself (one being the box art of Sonic 1). On the other side of that wall was a sketch of a Classic Sonic ‘get ready’ pose, with an interesting little ‘GOTTA GO FAST’ logo featuring AoStH Sonic at the bottom. I tried to snag a look inside those Sonic bags that people were toting around, but all I could see was promotional material picked up from other booths.

Elsewhere in the booth, there were a few new Sonic Boom renders plastered about and the television was showcasing various trailers of season 1 of the Sonic Boom cartoon and SEGA properties like Football Manager and Total War. There were t-shirts to go with these, but you have already published photos of them on the site.

The Christmas Sonic jumper was also there; although it was difficult to get a good picture of it because people were often walking past or huddled in front of it. There is also a bag at the front (bottom right) of the image, as well as a couple of other jumpers and an Ecco t-shirt at the back, but again, people persistently positioned their bodies in inconvenient places.

Looking at the images from our correspondent myself. It would appear as if Sega are not only heavily pushing active franchises, but there is also a big desire to push what seems to be dubbed ‘The Retro Collection’

blecard02

Alex Kidd, Alien Syndrome, Altered Beast, Ecco, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Shinobi are all listed as being licenses up for grabs. That’s quite a wealth of content right there! Would love to own some more Streets of Rage stuff, just hope that also includes Streets of Rage 2 & 3 and not just the first game.

But let’s bring it back to Sonic for now, in the last few months since we first saw the 25th Anniversary logo, we keep seeing words like ‘Classic’ and ‘Heritage’ being branded about. This is the first time that we have seen the 25th Anniversary logo and some of the promotional material for it in close and clear proximity.

blecard06

The use of the classic Sonic as a sketch, that to me screams of origins/early creation, then we have the leaflet all of what appear to be T-Shirt design, notice how they are all classic era designs. No sign of any modern Sonic, or any other modern character for that matter.

Sadly there are still no clues on the content for the next big Sonic game, however with Sega promoting the 25th as being classic and heritage based and also confirming that they are intending to celebrate it, to not have a game which ties into this seems like a missed opportunity.

Very special thanks to SSMB member Pawn for the photographs and report.

Sega’s Booth At Brand Licensing Europe: 25th Anniversary & Boom Spotted

ble2015booth1More Brand Licensing news, several images of Sega’s booth have been posted on twitter by none other than Sega’s own Tadashi Takezaki!

The booth appears to at first be very Sonic Boom heavy, however there are other Sega games around the outside of the booth including a ‘retro collection’ area.

However, eagle eyed readers may also find the image at the top of this article of interest, we can see the 25th anniversary logo again but this one is on a mural of classic Sonic and Eggman from Sonic 1. Is this a further clue as to the tone/nature of next year?

But more interestingly… is the fact that it was Tadashi Takezaki who took these images in the first place, in previous licensing events, both in Europe and the United Stages, it’s normally the local staff who handle and run the event, this is the first time that someone from Sega of Japan has been brought over to oversee an event. Dare I suggest that there is something of high importance at Brand Licensing Europe which he has gone over to oversee?

You can see the rest of the images in the gallery, keep checking TSS for more updates as and when we get them.

UPDATE: Sonic Boom Amy & Tails Official Mascot Costumes Spotted at BLE 2015

UPDATE: A new photo has been discovered.

boommascots

ORIGINAL STORY: boomble

Well we’ve had Sonic, so why not Tails & Amy too?

London’s Brand Licensing Europe 2015 is under way and Sega are attending the event and it would appear that they are trying to sell more Sonic Boom licenses. Well to aid them with this, it would appear that the Sonic Mascot is now joined by Tails and Amy.

In a picture posted to twitter by twitter user Ahrani of the show floor, the photo caught a glimpse of Sega’s booth, if you look closer (you may need to check the original tweet itself for the best quality), you can make out Amy & Tails mascot characters.

This would be the first time Amy & Tails have been seen in their Sonic Boom designs as mascot characters. In fact it might be the first time that Amy has ever appeared as an official costume and Tails’ last outing was way back in the mid 90’s.

So if you thought that Boom would be going away, better think again, you don’t spend a small fortune on costumes like this if you intend to shelf it soon within a year.

Odds are more information will come to light in the next few days, keep checking TSS for more information as and when we get it.

Smooth McGroove Releases a Lovely A-capella Rendition of Sonic 2’s Emerald Hill Zone

smoothmcgroove_emeraldhill

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced a number of staples in the Sonic series since it first launched in 1992: the Spin Dash ability, a seventh Chaos Emerald and subsequent Super transformation, the two-tailed fox Miles “Tails” Prower as the Blue Blur. Aside from its prequel, Sonic 2 was the highest selling game on the Mega Drive/Genesis, having sold over 6 million copies on its initial run, and cementing SEGA’s status as a successful and legitimate threat to Nintendo and their plumber mascot.

Like Sonic 1, the sequel title was scored by Dreams Come True musician, Masato Nakamura, and a number of the game’s most memorable songs still resound with fans to this day.

Smooth McGroove, renowned on YouTube for his faithful a-capella covers of video game music, uploaded his mesmerizing rendition of the introductory stage of Sonic 2, Emerald Hill Zone.

McGroove previously covered Chemical Plant Zone from the same game, and Sonic 3‘s Ice Cap Zone Act 1, as well as Sonic 1‘s Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, and Star Light Zone.

Although we uploaded our last episode very recently, it’s actually been almost 6 months since our last podcast. But now that we’re back on our feet, you can expect more of Sonic Talk in the upcoming months.

In this episode, Jason and GX go on a lengthy discussion on “Toys to Life” games including Disney Infinity 3.0, Skylanders Superchargers and Lego Dimensions while Alex gives us his two cents on the Metal Gear Solid series. We then discuss the recent delay of Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice and why we feel it may have been delayed. We’ll also go into GE Entertainments new line of Sonic plushies, a certain hedgehog soon to show up the Sonic Boom cartoon and why the cancellation of the Sonic Boom comic and Super Special magazine could be good for the Sonic digests. Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice Kid’s Meal Toys Now Available at Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s

CarlsSonicBoomKids

Although Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice has been delayed until next year, that’s not stopping Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s from promoting the game with Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice Cool Kids Combos . While they’re nothing too spectacular, they’re miles above what you got in the Del Taco Sonic Boom kids meal. You can collect up to four different toys in the set which each kids combo meal you purchase. These toys include…..

Splat Ball – See Sonic Boom characters on this soft, squishy ball. Turn your best friends into your greatest enemies as you splash them with water in these cool winter temperatures.

Sonic The Hedgehog Figure – This rolling Sonic the Hedgehog figure really shines! (Note to self: Get a few of these. Spray paint Sonic gold and make into award trophies for next Sonic fan convention.)

Board Game – You can play as Sonic, Tails, Sticks, Amy or Knuckles! Be the first to reach the end and win, but watch out for enemy attacks. Like the Del Taco toy, you have to build your own dice, but it does look like a more traditional board game.

Communicator with Secret Compartment – Lift the top off of this wristband to reveal a secret compartment. This can also be great for cosplay if you’re making a Sonic Boom costume for Halloween.

The promotion will be going on until early November. You can check out the website for more info at www.carlscoolkids.com. While you’re there, check out the funzone for Sonic Boom Wallpapers and more.

Mash-Up Monday: Dragon Spring & Knight of the Power

mashup_trunks24_gokusonic

[ Feature image is Super Sonic vs. SSJ Goku, by Lamar Wells! ]

As though Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball hasn’t garnered enough success during its initial run in print and on television the world over, the famed manga and anime series is having quite the revival period in recent years.

Sequel films Battle of Gods and Resurrection: F have since contributed to the series mythos with the introduction of the Super Saiyan God, and a new sequel anime series – Dragon Ball Super – continues to add to Goku’s many adventures, following the defeat of the alien warlord Frieza, Doctor Gero’s Androids and his ultimate creation in Cell, and Bibbidi’s evil, planet-levelling monster of eons past, Majin Bū.

Numerous parallels exist between Dragon Ball and Sonic the Hedgehog – a set of seven magical artifacts said to grant miracles, Super transformations, time-travelling heroes sent back to the present to save their future, just to name a few – but there’s only one such parallel we explore here on Mash-Up Monday (or would a “Fusion Friday” have worked better for this one?), and that’s music!

Our first mash-up – “Dragon Spring” – was submitted to us by TrueBlueFuse, combining the opening to Dragon Ball Z Kai with one of my favourite tracks from the mobile endless runner, Sonic Runners! Takayoshi Tanimoto’s “Dragon Soul” fuses with Tomoya Ohtani’s “Spring Emotions” below!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb7Cy5z1EZI

Thanks for sending it in, TBF!

On the other hand, Dragon Ball fans in the West are likely to have grown up to Bruce Faulconer’s score, so perhaps the next mash-up, “Knight of the Power” by Hyper-Shan, might suit your fancy!

Faulconer’s “Gohan Powers Up”, first played during the Z Warriors’ climactic battle with Cell (heck, some of you might even recognize this tune from Chakra-X’s Sonic: Nazo Unleashed animated fan film!), combines with Crush 40’s “Knight of the Wind”, from Sonic and the Black Knight, and the end result makes for a rather mystical take on an otherwise rock-heavy track. On one hand, it’s easier on the ears, but on the other, it sounds otherworldly!

Found any other interesting Sonic music mashups out there on the web? Maybe you have one of your own you’d like to share? If so, you can either share your suggestions in the comments section below (as well as your thoughts on TrueBlueFuse and Hyper-Shan’s mash-ups above!), or you can reach me via any of the following to see your choice next Monday:

Also, if you could all keep the “Sonic vs. Goku” debates outside of the comments section, that’d be greeeeeaaaaat–––

Typically, players have been asked to rescue animals or collect certain special items in a bid to get various rewards. However this new event appears to be very different as it’s described as a ‘raid event.’

Roughly translated the text warns players of a ‘strong enemy Zazz Raid,’ traditionally, raid enemies are powerful enemies which drop a huge number of rewards when defeated.

However that’s not the only announcements, details of the next version of the game have also been posted and two major bugs, one of which we posted details about as well as a fix back at the start of August, might finally be fixed. That being the clear cache bug.

As it stands right now, Sonic Runners doesn’t remove any old event data or notification data, even if it’s totally worthless. e.g. notifications with dates on them. This means that if you have had the game since day 1 and never performed any maintenance, then the game is actually storing nearly 2GB+ if you have never cleared the cache/redundant memory files from the game.

Well it appears that there will now be an option in the game to actually perform this task without having to connect your device to a computer and manually doing it.

It also seems that Facebook options/settings will also be enabled in this version too.

It’s expected that this update will come within the next week or two.
