S&ASR Transformed (Wii U) and SMB Banana Splitz Going Cheap at HMV

April 30th pics 009

High street retailer HMV has heavily discounted two of SEGA’s 2012 releases in store, namely Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (Wii U) and Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz (PS Vita). The former can be snatched up for just £7.99 and the latter for the extremely low cost of £4.99. At those prices it would be rude not to buy.

ESRB Lists Three More Sonic Games for 3DS Virtual Console

Tails Adventure Game Gear Box Art

A few months ago, the Australian Ratings Board posted listings for both Tails Adventure and Sonic Drift 2. Now the ESRB has followed suit, listing not only these games but also Sonic the Hedgehog G.G., the Game Gear/Master System version of Sonic 1.

Of course, nothing is confirmed until SEGA confirms it, but with two ratings boards listing both TA and SD2, it’s probably safe to assume that we will at least be getting those games. If you’d like to read about some of Sonic’s history on the Game Gear, go check out my article about Sonic Triple Trouble.

What, another well made recreation via Source Filmmaker? Strange, isn’t it!

Here is a little something to tickle your nostalgia on this lovely Thursday morning! Dive back into the mellow that was 1998, back when the voices of Ryan Drummond, the young Corey Bringar, and the late Deem Bristow kicked off the Dreamcast era, as HypotheDragon recreates the initial confrontation between Sonic, Tails, and Eggman from Sonic Adventure for your viewing pleasure!

Sonic On the Go: Sonic Triple Trouble

Sonic Triple Trouble screen 1

Handheld Sonic games always seem to get the short end of the stick. From the days of the Game Gear all the way up until today, it seems like Sonic’s quality portable outings are usually ignored in favor of worshiping or hating the console games. Now don’t get me wrong, many of Sonic’s best games have been on consoles, including the legendary flagship trilogy that launched the entire franchise. However, there have been plenty of great entries on a multitude of portables as well, even during the franchise’s so called “darkest days” in the mid-2000s when the best Sonic had to show for himself on the consoles were games like Sonic Heroes, Shadow, and Sonic06. With summer almost upon us, I thought I would take a look at some of Sonic’s portable games, and maybe convince some of you to try them out if you haven’t already! Among these great, under appreciated gems was Sonic Triple Trouble, a culmination of years of work on perfecting the formula on the 8-bit Game Gear.

We here at The Sonic Show are an odd bunch, it can not be denied. And when we hear a fan fiction on our friends podcast, VGM:Awesome we knew this would have to become part of our “amazing” work.

We were simply so blown away by the acting on this fanfic reading that we got our team of 5 year olds (aka Jay who is 25) to bring it to life through Disney like animation.

Enjoy!

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Now on Intel Ultrabook

Want to play All-Stars Racing in a fairly different way? Sega and Sumo digital have brought Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed to the Intel Ultrabook, the half-tablet/half laptop device that can fold in the opposite direction (meaning you can fold it with the screen and keyboard facing the outside). This version of the popular racer allows you to have up to four players on one screen with traditional controls, or fold it to play the screen alone with tilt and touch.

Mash-Up Monday: Come On! Shrek It Up!

Some folks understand how to make mash-ups. See, mash-ups are like… onions. And onions, like mash-ups have layers.

And no one knows this better than CamisadoRush.

The vocals of Smash Mouth’s infamous All Star, notoriously known for its heavy usage in Dreamworks’ Shrek movie series, gets layered over the instrumental version of Escape from the City from Sonic Adventure 2.

I know, I know, but… just give it a listen, just one, then it will all be ogre.

Check yourself before you shrek yourself.

The Late Review: F4F Exclusive Tails Statue

f4ftailsWelcome to a new and hopefully not regular feature on TSS that I’m calling ‘The Late Review.’ What is The Late Review? Well, whilst I will always try to review something a few days after the said product comes out, something’s not possible, be it due to financial reasons, slow delivery or what is more likely, my own lazy bones just doesn’t want to do it, things can get delayed. In today’s case, it’s a bit more complicated. SEGASonic:Radio DJ Auditions – The Results!

ssrlogo

As many of you might recall, SEGASonic:Radio has not received a whole lot of tender love and care these days. Following the preview for the Sonic Stadium Music Album 2011 last year, SS:R purportedly shut down for much needed renovations. During this downtime, two shows loyally kept on airing – Biafra Republic’s A/V Hijack, and Turbo’s Turbo Drive Live.

Numerous attempts and plans have been conceptualized to relaunch the station, but unfortunately, nothing has quite taken off at 100%. With the former Station Manager, BlitzChris, becoming more and more occupied with life offline (and make no mistake, this is ALWAYS a priority), SS:R had a difficult time retaining relevance within the community. And as time dragged on, things were getting worse.

Sooooooo tl;dr, Dreadknux (who owns both TSS and SS:R) and BlitzChris were at their end of their rope, so they both invested in SS:R Revival Plan C and hoped for the best! That was a joke.

So, as the new Station Manager, I would like to say, on behalf of everyone aboard SEGASonic:Radio: thank you. Thank you for putting up with our collective absence as a station, and a big thanks to all who took the time to audition for spots as SS:R DJs. Your concern for this station’s wellbeing means a whole lot to us, and we are thankful to have received your pitches! The enthusiasm throughout the last three weeks was just about palpable!

Unfortunately, it is as we said when we first put up the notice. While many have indeed entered, only a select few have succeeded. We have received numerous entries, but those that have been picked out have been chosen based on the criteria we have listed in the notice: their pitches were fun, bearable, enjoyable, entertaining, interesting, professional, and most of all, unique. The candidates were chosen based on these qualities, and these qualities alone, so if you have any qualms against us for not having chosen your show, then all I can do is apologize.

Everyone gave it all they got, so to those who’ve passed, I congratulate you in advance and look forward to working with you! To those who did not, you’ve indeed tried, but I regret to inform you that you hadn’t passed – however, though you hadn’t made the cut, we won’t cut contact with you just yet, so keep your eyes on your inboxes in the near future.

Now then! I’ve talked and rambled long enough. I’m pretty sure everyone’s getting antsy (or shaking their computer screens while shouting “GET ON WITH IT”), so enough stalling from me! Without further ado, I think it’s about time to unveil who the three new show candidates are. Shall we?

Onwards!

The Vault: Giochi Preziosi’s Sonic Promotion/The Revenge of The Hog with the Death Ray Eyes

In 2009, I found a youtube video which at the time had only a handful of views, the video showed an old Italian TV advert which was a promotion for Sega and the release of Sonic 1 in Italy. The promotion was basically ‘Buy a Sega Megadrive and get a free pin badge which gives you the chance to win win Sega prizes.’

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViOn4dmuKn0

The advert quickly became quite notorious, mainly due to the ending which featured an out of tune Sonic theme and an animation of a miscoloured Sonic with glowing red eyes pulling a goofy expression. Even TSS featured it, lovingly calling it ‘The Hog with the Death Ray Eyes.’ To date the pin badge is known as ‘The Sonic Baydge’ by various merch collectors and amazingly, they still work as they did back in 1992, when you consider this is over 20 years old, thats quite impressive.

Since 2009 the details of the promotion have remained a bit of a mystery… Until today…

Summer of Sonic 2013 Website Goes Live

SOS webpage

The annual fan convention Summer of Sonic has updated it’s website, and things are a bit darker than normal. In what will be the conventions 6th year a teaser site has gone live which doesn’t show us much, but there are one or two clues. Most noticably are tiny outlines of Sonic & Metal Sonic along the bottom of the site and do we need to point out the matrix style numbers in the background?

Also, if we take a look at the official Facebook & Twitter feed, things seem a bit… different? What could it all mean?

TSS COMMUNITY RELEASE: The Sonic Stadium Music Adventure 2012

1Carbo_front

It’s been a long rough road, but it’s finally here! The Sonic Stadium is proud to present the sequel to last year’s album, and the second of a budding line of community releases – The Sonic Stadium Music Adventure 2012!

Even with a whopping nine month development period, I once again severely underestimated the creative ability of the TSS community. We had gone from last year’s 45 tracks and 19 artists to an uncontainable explosion of participation! I expected new records, but by this much? Never!

Spanning across 10 Acts, this leviathan of an album contains 143 songs, with an estimate 8 hours worth of music. A large cast of musicians and artists have each taken it upon themselves to redefine the Sonic music experience, be it through different genres, original efforts, or even collaborative works.

And you know what I think? They all succeeded.

SEGA Planning Exciting Things for Sonic as a Brand “in the Near Future”

Sega-Sonic logo

GamesBeat recently spoke to two members of staff from SEGA in a new interview: senior director of digital marketing Mike Evans and director of online operations Ethan Einhorn. When asked about the current console tradition and how SEGA views the market right now, Einhorn briefly mentions some “very exciting” plans for Sonic in the near future in the below snippet.

Ethan Einhorn: We’re taking, on the console side, more of a pillar approach. We’re doing some very exciting things with Sonic as a brand in the near future. We’re also very heavily focused on strategy, as you’ve seen with our pickup of [Company of Heroes developer] Relic, as well as what we’re doing with [Total War developer] Creative Assembly. Of course, we’re continuing to do core titles like Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Freak-Out Friday: A Sucky No Choosing Day

Did you ever have the misfortune of watching a single episode of an anime called Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de? The show that retold the Nintendo vs. SEGA console war with a feudal fantasy twist (which, in concept, sounded like a pretty cool idea)? Those of us who did were pretty hyped for it when news first broke; we marked our calendars for the premiere and waited, thinking of what possible wonders would await us in this series…

…and then the first episode came out. Expectations dashed, everyone goes home. Turns out that Aoi Sekai is more “Oppai-Oppai” in quality than “Opa-Opa”, if you catch my drift…

To give you a better idea of this show’s terribadness and to save you the trouble of looking the series up (no, really, you’re welcome), here’s an abridged version of the first episode! Put together by Cyberlink420, the guy behind the Sonic F series, here is the appropriately titled A Sucky No Choosing Day!

Update: “It’s a glitch” Sonic 4’s Website is Down, Speculation is Up.

Sonic-4-Episode-2

Update: According to our resident tech guru Bmn, It’s a glitch. What’s specifically happening is a recurring loop of redirects between www.sonicthehedgehog4.com/us and www.sega.com/sonic4, which suggests minor technical problem. But still, to leave it like that for nearly a week? So there you have it.

Original Story: Regardless as to what you may think of the game. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 happened, it’s still for sale on several online services and is far from what you would consider to be an old game.

So why then has the official website been taken down and why has it remained offline for the best part of a week? SSMB member -Bender- first noticed that the site had gone dark a few days ago and whilst sometimes sites can go down for a day or two, this site has been offline for nearly a week if not longer.

Hey there and welcome to The Sonic Stadium. I’ve decided to give the place a little makeover for the new year! Hope you like it – it’s about time we updated the site’s design to take into account changing trends in internet use.

People are using the World Wide Web a lot more, now that 56K Modems are becoming more mainstream. We went for a look that included images so that those on the cusp of modern technology will be able to truly take advantage of their new hardware. But we’ve not put too many images up there – we don’t want those with slower connections to suffer! We’ve basically only picked images that were absolutely necessary.

The new two-column structure means that a dynamic menu can be situated on the left hand side. Click on a link, and if you have been to a page before the font changes colour! We’ve also centered the content on the right hand column, making for an easier reading experience than ever before.

As we enter an exciting new era in internet technology, we hope this new design serves as one that can stay in step with the web’s evolution for years to come. Let us know what you think of the design using the (new look) comments section below. See you soon!

Stay ICE,
