SOA box art Xbox 360

SEGA of America community staff member Kellie has officialy unveiled the Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing U.S. box artworks via the SEGA of America blog, in hi-res too. Banjo-Kazooie are still on the Xbox 360 version cover confirming their presence in the game 1,000 times over. The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo is still present on the Wii and DS box arts laying to rest any worries about the online feature for those versions.

Argos Displays UK ASR Box Arts. UK Release Feb 19th?

UK box Xbox 360

UK retailer Argos is now displaying what could be the final UK box arts for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing but one major difference to the leaked U.S. box art is the absence of Banjo & Kazooie on the front. So could SEGA of America be using the bear and bird as a selling point on their box art while SEGA Europe don’t feel the same or could Banjo Kazooie’s appearance on the cover have been scrapped for the final box art?

Another difference is the lack of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo on the DS version compared to the leaked U.S. box art that contains the logo.

One more difference is on the PS3 box which oddly contains both the old left side Playstation 3 banner AND the new top header PS3 banner compared to the leaked U.S. box art that only contains the new top header PS3 banner.

Argos’s listed release date has been changed from March 26th to February 19th so could a release date be coming soon from SEGA Europe?

Sonic Bowling Hits Japanese Mobile Phones

bowling1 bowling2

Proving that the Sonic Cafe titles are still a hit five years on, SEGA’s official Sonic Channel blog has announced a new mobile phone game for Japanese handsets – Sonic Bowling! The game is available on mobile phones on the SoftBank network, but Docomo and au network versions are coming soon.

Developed by ★ Puyo! SEGA, the game is essentially bowling with Sonic characters. The models, Hunter from the SSMB noted, look similar to the ones used in the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are confirmed as playable characters, each with their own playing style.

As well as regular ten-pin play, you can upload your scores against the country-wide ranking system, or take part in ten missions handed to you by Dr. Eggman (because obviously he’d be able to take over the world if you sucked at bowling, or something).

bowling3 bowling4

If you have a touch-capable phone, there are optional control methods that take advantage of that, and if you don’t fancy spending 315 Yen on the program just yet, take solace in knowing that SEGA are offering a free trial version so you can get into the swing of the kingpin. For everyone outside Japan though, don’t take solace in the fact that, like other Sonic Cafe games, this is not likely to reach Western networks.

“Hide & Seek & DESTROY!”: Dr. Eggman has vanished–or has he? As Sonic searches for clues, he stumbles across an old weapon from the bygone days of his childhood. Look’s liek someone over at SEGA clicked the submit button early. The above box art’s we just reported about SEGA posting on their website have now been PULLED from their website.

Could the boxarts and confirmation of Banjo & Kazooie in the Xbox 360 version be the special announcement due this week that Steve Lycett of Sumo Digital was talking about?

Box art released for SEGA ASR: Banjo and Kazooie confirmed!

Seems the cover art TSS posted a few weeks ago was right on the money: not only was it the final cover art most versions of the game, but Rare’s legendary platforming (and driving) duo, Banjo and Kazooie, are in!

SEGA has just now released cover art for all versions of the game, and the 360 version has something special:

No word yet on how this effects the 360 version’s roster, though it’s worth noting that no other versions of the game have an exclusive character featured. You can see the rest of the covers on the game’s page. This is more then likely the big ASR announcement SUMO was talking about, though nothing has been confirmed.

Special thanks goes to Shadi Wulf for bringing this to my attention.

IGN UK Previews Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing

sonic-sega-all-stars-racing--20091215084049781

Leave it to Steve Lycett (S0L) himself to tip us on a preview for his own game!

IGN UK today has posted a preview of the upcoming mascot kart-racing title.  They enter the preview rather pessimistically, stating that Sonic R and Sonic Drift were heading in the right direction, but all hope was lost with the Sonic Riders series.   However, they immediately turn the corner once they start playing the game and giving props where props are due:

Scratch under the surface, though, and there’s every reason to get excited. The SEGA cast is more than just window-dressing for a straight-up clone; they’re lovingly woven into Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing’s very fabric, with the company’s back catalogue treated with the kind of respect one wishes the more recent Sonic games had displayed.

IGN UK also tried to guess what’s coming down the pipe for the title in the form of unlockables, secrets, and downloadable content:

Our guesses – which ranged from a playable Opa-Opa and Fantasy Zone level to an Outrun themed stage – were met with wry grins and refusals to comment from the PR. They’re all lovingly worked in, their stages replete with familiar chimes that will set SEGA aficionado’s hearts aflutter. It’s first-class fan service throughout.

All in all, IGN says that ASR feels tight and responsive, thanks to Outrun 2‘s drifting engine.  It also feels like a more complete SEGA package than Sumo Digital’s last mascot-parade, SEGA Superstars Tennis.  I’m excited now (and this is coming from somebody who said “uuuggghhhh” when he saw the first trailer).

nintendo-logo

Nintendo of America have revealed their Q1 2010 release schedule and among both Wii and DS lists is Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. The Sumo Digital developed racing game is down for a March release which is very different to all of the U.S. retailers speculating a February release. Up until now SEGA of America and Sumo Digital have only given an Early 2010 release of which March is well within that barrier.

With Microsoft revealing the full online and offline features, Nintendo now revealing the release month and a special announcement due this week from SEGA/Sumo Digital things are sure to get very exciting from now until release.

Gamestop aren’t stopping there though, they want to get the fans involved so their asking for you to send in your questions to put to Sega’s head of consumer business and the developers of 4 of their biggest games they have lined up for 2010 with one of the developers being the producer for Sonic Unleashed namely Toshihiro Nagoshi.

Gamespots one rule is –
Remember: We want clear and intuitive questions that will translate well and give other readers an insight into the development process and the games.

Classic Rock Brings Together Mystic Cave, Chemical Plant

The latest hotness from OCRemix is “Mystic Chemicals,” a real “live” piece who’s sound calls back to the early days of bands like Led Zepplin.  The drums are heavy and loose (sometimes too loose) as the guitar wails away on that familiar Mystic riff.  Chemical Plant gets worked in midway through the song for a rockin’ good time.  XMark did a great job in capturing the feel and sound of 60s/70s rock.

Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing Ratings Line-up. ‘Mild Suggestive Themes’

Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing has now been rated by 4 of the world’s ratings boards where the game will be released. Most surprising is the U.S. ratings board ESRB’s statement that the game contains Mild Suggestive Themes.

Nothing revealed in the game so far would warrant such a rating so it’s quite curious as to what Sumo Digital haven’t revealed in the game yet. Fans are speculating Ulala’s appearance in the game, past games in which the character as appeared have always contained been labelled with the Mild Suggestive Themes statement by the ESRB.

Steve Lycett Confirms Reflection Sightings In ASR Aren’t Nightopians

UPDATE: Steve Lycett from Sumo Digital under his S0L nickname has confirmed the Nightopian sightings are just environment reflections. However Steve has seen how keen the community is to see NiGHTS in the game and still doesn’t confirm either way wether the character is in the game or not.

I feel slightly like I’m spoiling your fun here – but it’s purely the reflection of the environment you’re seeing there…

You guys really are rather desperate to see NiGHTS in there aren’t you!

Put it this way – that would have taken some quite extensive photo-shopping – and you’re also credting us with fair more deviousness than even I have!

Nightopians in ASR
Editor’s note: Those are not in-game gold rings…

Nightopians2
I’ve just spotted another Nightopian in the above picture. It’s in the shiney wood finish in the red circle, turn your head to the left and you’ll see its head, eyes and large white collar. It would explain the sparkles in the screenshot too.

Eagle eyed SSMB member HunterTSF has spotted Nightopians in the above old screenshot of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. Nightopians are small residents of Nightopia seen around various stages in the NiGHTS games. This isn’t confirmation but could very well mean our favourite jester NiGHTS could very well be in Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing after all.

Let’s hope NiGHTS is the now possibly delayed special announcement Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett has been talking about recently.

SEGA Netherlands Unveil Release Schedule For 2010

Sega-Sonic logo

SEGA Netherlands have unveiled their current release schedule for 2010 to Dutch Playstation site PSFocus.

* Bayonetta – January 8, 2010
* Vancouver 2010 – January 15, 2010
* Aliens vs. Predator – February 2010
* Planet 51 – February 2010
* Yakuza 3 – March 2010
* SEGA & Sonic All-Star Racing – early 2010
* Resonance of Fate – Spring 2010
* Iron Man 2 – Spring 2010
* Alpha Protocol – Spring 2010
* 2 Valkyria Chronicles (PSP) – Spring 2010
* Aliens: Colonial Marines – unknown

Despite rumours it looks like SEGA are still planning on releasing Aliens: Colonial Marines afterall and Valkyria Chronicles won’t be too long a wait.

Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing is surprisingly still slated for an Early 2010 release, not even a release month is mentioned though in recent previews Sumo Digital staff have stated the game is still far from finished.

It looks like fans are going to have to stay patient in the meantime but if you really are eager then October’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games on Wii & DS should keep crossover enthusiasts busy for now.

More fangame action flyin’ at ya!

We’ve covered Sonic Fusion (by Felik of SFGHQ) here at TSS before and it has been better with each demo.  We haven’t played anything since the demo at SAGE 2009 in July, but this video is more than good enough.  On display here is “Flooded Capital Zone,” a lost empire submerged underwater, complete with ancient Greek/Roman architecture.

The level design is incredibly well thought-out and creative.  It bears a striking play-style to that of Marble Zone, except with a bit more bells and whistles.  Have I mentioned the graphics yet?  I haven’t?  Oh, uh… well… they’re THE BEST.  Rarely do you see custom graphics for an Advance-style fangame, so I’m thoroughly impressed.

SEGA U.S. Gets A New Sonic Statue

4167450490_443d932f43

Today on the SEGA U.S. blog, employee Kellie tells the story of the arrival of a brand-new Sonic statue for the office lobby.  The statue is life-size and awesome. The new statue replaces a statue from 1999.  She writes:

So I’m just sitting at my desk, typing away, when one of our HR reps appears over the wall of my cube. She says there’s a new Sonic in the lobby, and I should bring my camera. I dash off to find a major project in the works — the assembly of a new Sonic statue.

In case you’ve never been to our offices (as I assume most of you have not), we have a Sonic in our lobby. It’s the older ‘99-ish Sonic. He comes up to my mid-torso — tall enough for me to rest my elbow on.

With the arrival of this new, “modern Sonic” statue, followers of SEGA’s Twitter wanted to know if the old statue would be given away during one of the blog’s “Free Stuff Friday” sweepstakes.  Kellie replied to the large amount of interest:

Sadly, the answer is none of the above. The old Sonic will go into storage. (I’m bolding for emphasis because I expect that to be asked a lot.) But rest assured, if he is ever in danger of meeting the inside of a dumpster, the community team will rescue him and give him a good home.

Check out the gallery of the new and old statues below.

Meet SEGA’s E3 1996 Booths Including The Sonic Xtreme Booth

YouTube user ojdon has come across 2 clips from an unknown French source of some of SEGA’s booths at E3 1996 including the Sonic Xtreme booth, the NiGHTS into Dreams booth(with some nice rings from the game around it) and the Bug Too! booth. Correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I’m aware footage of these booths has never been seen until now so it’s pretty cool to get a look at them at long last.

Check them out!

Merry Christmas From The Sonic Stadium

Hey guys, as you’ve probably noticed it’s December this month! So we’ve gone all festive for the occasion! Do you like this new skin? It’s pretty jolly, isn’t it? 🙂 We’re not stopping at decorations though, we’ve already got a lot of great holiday season material online and ready for you to read. Check out the start of the 25 Days of Christmas NiGHTS, check out eBay Watch to find some great new merchandise (for yourself or a present), or look to be a bit more giving in the New Year with details on Sonic Relief 2010.

We have some more special stuff planned too, like some holiday-themed articles and some great festive updates for you. I’ll have some time off of work soon for Christmas holiday – I’ll be personally spending the time updating areas like the Scanned Material and Game Archive sections. By the way, did you notice that I’ve launched the Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing page? Give it a look here – I’ll be adding more details on the game via its ‘Gameplay’ and ‘Zones’ pages later on too.

Christmas is all about sharing and being with your friends, so why not pop into the SSMB Forums and enjoy the festive cheer with your fellow Sonic fans as well? I’m in the process of sorting out a special Sonic X-Mas skin for that too, so don’t worry – it’s just taking a little longer because I have to recreate the Sonical skin as a base.

We hope you enjoy the content that comes over the holiday, and I’d wish you all a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays but the date’s weeks away yet. I’ll simply say, good luck in the Christmas Shopping rush!

The 25 Days of Christmas NiGHTS

Our first holiday feature is a weekly series called “The 25 Days of Christmas NiGHTS.” My cousin, Brett, decided that it would be awesome to sit down, relax with a warm drink, and enjoy the euphoric NiGHTS demo. He has been writing a journal and taking one photo a day since December 1st. Hit the jump for Brett’s photos and journal for the first week:
