NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams and NiGHTS PS2 Media Frenzy!

Frozen Bell was my favourite stage from the first and it’s looking as good as ever in the remake!

IGN have updated their website with some new videos of the highly anticipated NiGHTS Wii game earlier today, showing off some new in-game footage, music and a better look at the three new transformations in action.

Check out the NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams IGN media page here.

One video also shows the Race Multiplayer in motion, with the voice of Reala sounding much more deeper than it did in the original game. It’s shaping up to look like a lot of fun, with each video SEGA release looking more of an improvement each time. Continue reading NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams and NiGHTS PS2 Media Frenzy!

Mario & Sonic London Launch Party – Friday 23rd November

For those living in and around London, and who have an afternoon to spare on Friday, you can head down to London’s West End to celebrate the launch of Mario and Sonic at the Olympics for the Nintendo Wii at the Oxford Street HMV.

The official British launch of the game will take place at 12:00pm noon, with festivities going on until around 3:00pm.

There is also an opportunity to see Radio 1 DJs Dick and Dom battle it out on the big screen, and no doubt get a snap of yourself with Sonic and Mario themselves. Try not to clothesline Mario though.

For anyone in Newcastle on Friday, the Northern M&S launch party is going down in my living room from 7:00pm onwards. Bring beer.

NiGHTS Into Dreams gets upgraded on PS2

Today a Japanese magazine has printed a 2 page article about NiGHTS into Dreams on the PS2. Being as we aren’t fluent in that language we can’t say if anything’s changed from the Sega Saturn version other than visuals. The only noteable thing from the screenshots is the gallery mode that looks similar to the Christmas Nights extras. IGN report there will be illustrations and a movie viewer.
The game will hit Japan 21-2-08

1up Reviews Sonic 3 and Sonic 3D Blast on VC…

Gaming website 1up.com has caught up on a large backlog of Virtual Console reviews. Among these are reviews for Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. As for 3D Blast, we could all care less, but Sonic 3 gets…

… A THUMBS DOWN?!

Citing “messy level designs”, “dull and forgettable enemies”, and a “tepid soundtrack”, among other complaints, the blasphemous esteemed writers at 1up apparently don’t feel that the Genesis/Mega Drive classic is worth the Wii Points.

Now, I’m not advocating a mass protest… yet… but I think 1up should be made aware of exactly what we think of this game that they describe as “decent”. To arms! To arms!

New Riders 2 Screens Reveal Loads

That looks like an awkward position to drive in…

New screenshots of the upcoming Sonic Riders sequel to PS2 and Wii uploaded at SEGAs FTP show off some new content. Shadow and Rouge and confirmed to be back, now with the unsurprising inclusion of Blaze the Cat.

Other than the new Blaze sightings, water bike gear, flying gear and Chopper bike gear have been shown, expanding on the originals mere three type of vehicles (Board, Bike and Skate.) There’s also screens of some new courses such as the water based stage and temple like area. Continue reading New Riders 2 Screens Reveal Loads

Mario & Sonic: Going for Gold

The Wii has had a bad time of it lately. Everyone’s waiting for Super Mario Galaxy to come along, and before that there hasn’t been a lot in the way of hardcore games that people under the age of 40 want to really play on the machine. We wouldn’t go so far as to say that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will change any of that current ‘party game’ perception, but that’s not to say that we didn’t have a damn good time playing it.

By ‘we’ I mean a good chunk of the online Sonic community; myself, Rory (Roareye Black), Adam ‘T-Bird’ Tuff, Lewis of Sonic Yoda fame along with Jess and Diogo from the SSMB were all invited to play the Nintendo and SEGA mash-up. Upon arrival our good chum Kevin laid bare a table full of refreshments while we all played various events as characters from the Mario and Sonic universes.

This was probably taken when I was sucking big time at the whole running thing. Need exercise.
This was probably taken when I was sucking big time at the whole running thing. Need exercise.

The game itself is split into nine categories, with events being divided within these sections. For example, all the track and field games will be under Athletics, while swimming activities are to be found under Aquatics. We played a fair number of the available events, and here’s what we thought of them.

The 100m sprint is about the most well-known event of the game, and involves your favourite furry/portly characters legging it towards the finish line. Getting on your marks requires holding the B trigger down on the Wii Remote, and when the ‘GO’ signal is displayed, whacking the Remote and Nunchuk up and down alternately has you running for dear life. It’s something that requires a lot of energy at first, but after a few plays (and undoubtedly sucking, but that might just be Adam) you understand there’s a specific rhythm that will push you to victory. There are longer track courses as well, so those with indestructible arms and a sadistic bent might want to give the 800m a go as well.

In a similar fashion, the 100m Freestyle Swimming race requires exertion to the point of near-destruction when competitive attitudes rise to the challenge. Each character has a different style of swimming – Waluigi will perform the Butterfly by waving both Nunchuk and Wii Remote together in a uniformed fashion, while Sonic dons a life jacket and does ‘Underwater Running’. Cute. During a Community Contest I almost beat the opposition by almost suffocating myself under the chlorine; but you have to stop for air every so often otherwise you knacker your chances of getting a Gold. Which ended up putting me in last place. If there were air bubbles for Sonic instead I’d have probably done a bit better.

Eggman just looks so regal. Coming soon by SEGA and Nintendo – Robotnik’s Silver Jubilee (on Wii).

Archery and Skeet Shooting was more up my street, and of course Eggman had to be picked. Characters are split into heavyweights, speed, all-round and skill types, with different abilities coming in handy or failing them in each event. The good ol’ Doc was good with a weapon it seems, as I was kicking arse as little discs flew all over the place. It was almost as if Robotnik merely needed a scarf to complete his upper class blunderbuss-esque image.

Skeet Shooting is a lot like Duck Hunt really, where you have to aim and shoot plates using the Wii Remote. Before you begin, a heart meter appears beating a dot across the screen. You have to hit B at the right time to get the right heartbeat to approach the next set. If you time it wrong your aim gets considerably smaller, while correct timing gets you a massive target for the wins. Nobody told Adam about different characters’ heartbeats being different though, as Tails’ heartbeat was going incredibly fast, making it difficult to get the timing right.

Archery is a bit more involved, and has you using the Nunchuk and Remote in a Robin Hood fashion. Pull back on the Wii Remote to make your shot, and aim the Wii Remote and Nunchuk together carefully to make your attempt more accurate. I won at that too, because I am cool. Rory was having fun playing as Waluigi – I guess you have to make the most of your mistakes at least.

Good news for those of you who, like me, love your Sonic tunes!

It looks like we are set to see a compilation album due out early next year which will include a selection of the best vocal tracks from Sonic the hedgehog games, past and present.
Here’s what CD Japan have to say:

“Look back on fifteen years of “Sonic the Hedgehog” with the best vocal songs from each of the previously released “Sonic” games. Includes unreleased tracks, CD debuts, the latest remixes, and even bonus tracks from some of today’s hottest artists!”

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing more exciting than a CD of unreleased material and remixes!

Bioware confirm Sonic RPG still in development

Bioware recently asked their forum community to provide them with some questions regarding their future and sure enough they got some questions back. Two of their guy’s Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk have now answered the community’s questions in a video you can watch/download at their site.

Sonic RPG was mentioned, most importantly with this question –
“Are you guys still doing that Sonic RPG now that you have been acquired by EA?”

Answer?

“So, our commitment to Sonic RPG on the DS hasn’t changed a bit – We have a great partner with SEGA and we’re looking forward to being able to show some…some sneak peaks on that game real soon.”

‘Tec Toys’ to release Portable Mega Drive

To me, the screen looks even smaller then a Gameboy Micros!

The Brazilian company Tec Toys announced today that they are to be releasing a sort of SEGA Nomad device which lets you play 20 built in Mega Drive/Genesis titles on December 5th.

The device will retail for (a hefty) $110, around £55 if translated into UK currency. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams delayed again!

It has been reported by one of the “NiNJAS” at NiGHTSintoDreams.com that NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams has been delayed over a month. It now has a January/February release, with only a few days seperating the release of the game in America and Europe.

Whilst this hasn’t been “officially” confirmed, this source has been spot on accurate in the past. NiGHTS is now a 2008 title, completely missing the Christmas holiday rush, and giving the game an extra month of much needed polish. Continue reading NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams delayed again!

Do YOU have what it takes to put a twinkle in SEGA’s eye?

SEGA stated to the press today that at this years Game Connection events they’re looking for something ‘New and Original.’

Games Industry.biz reported that the company will be attending among other big names in the gaming world to discuss new business strategies and search for new game ideas that hope to drive their role in the gaming industry.

I have never heard of this event before and personally I think that it is a very good idea. Speaking from a trainee Games Designers point of view, this opens a huge opportunity for creative individuals who have the experience along with wanting to get noticed to pitch their ideas and goals to big companies like SEGA.

If you’re part of an Indie games company and wish to be noticed by someone like SEGA, Games Connection sounds like the best damn opportunity you’re going to get!

Five new Journey of Dreams Videos

The ‘Game Videos’ website has just uploaded five brand-spanking new NiGHTS videos viewable on the internet as of today. A lot of news on this game lately, but these videos have got me even more hyped more than anything.

See all Five vids here intergrated into one page courtesy of Nintendo Wii Fanboy!
The Shleep are back! 8D

The videos show off new footage, new music and alot of other cool stuff. This is looking to be an awesome sequal to an above awesome origional and has definatly greatly improved upon the quality of the previous batch of videos. It also appears you DO have to get a key from the bird to enter the ‘NiGHTS Captures’ (origionally they were Ideya Palaces’ to continue to the next course. This change doesn’t really seem bad, infact it looks fun chasing after those bird things. Stay tuned at TSS for all the latest NiGHTS 2 media!

I think I need to sit down after that. Well, if I wasn’t already sat down. x_x;

Also: Well done Somethingstein for finding the videos and letting us all know on the forums. =P

More new screenshots and four new Rivals 2 Videos

IGN have released four new gameplay videos of Sonic Rivals 2, one of them including a story scene between Tails and Espio. Ironic to the game’s name it look’s like characters will be coupled to WORK TOGETHER –

  • Sonic and Tails
  • Knuckles and Rouge
  • Shadow and Metal Sonic (Fan-fiction love story writers will be loving this -_-‘)
  • Silver and Espio (and this -_-‘)

It also look’s like we have adventure maps like the one in Sonic Advance 2 making a return.

There is alot of voicework in these video’s(Espio sounds terrible in my oppinion) and doesn’t seem to be written very well, for example at the start of the Knockout mode battle between Sonic and Knuckles Sonic says “Let’s race”. Continue reading More new screenshots and four new Rivals 2 Videos

New Rivals 2 Screens

Sega have released some new screens of Sonic Rivals 2 which include more of Rouge and some new in-stage gimmicks such as hamster wheels, hang gliders, air boards and some pumpkin gizmo that look’s like it works the same as those logs in the first game.

We can also see two bosses, a roulette boss where Eggman doesn’t look flat like he did in Rivals 1 and a huge robot bull that chases after you and your rival.

The graphics and presentation also look alot better in these new screenshots. Will all these new features and modes make for a better game experience? I think so, it’s little in-stage gimmicks that made the old school 2D games so successful so there may be some hope for this game.

It’s A Sonic Knockout!

Ack. I’m aching all over this morning. Worse than a night after headbanging down my local metal club. I suspect Kevin (AAUK) of Sonic Wrecks feels slightly worse. At least my eye doesn’t smart anymore. All in the name of journalism, eh? But the pain was really all worth it.

The reason for all this madness? Yesterday SEGA held a press event for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. I attended on behalf of The Sonic Stadium – thanks to great shakes being made by Kevin’s new residency in the Online Marketing department, you can expect yours truly to be in the front line alongside fellow journalists, asking pertinent questions of Sonic Team designers such as “Where are the chequered hills?”.

Perhaps the term ‘front line’ was decidedly apt, because this was no ordinary press event. In an impressive coup, SEGA had all the attendees playing an exciting revival of classic British TV show ‘It’s A Knockout’!

For those who weren’t alive in the 1970’s (me), It’s A Knockout was a game show hosted by charming smooth-talker Stuart Hall, where teams had to dress up in ridiculous suits and play bizarre games to win medallions and champagne. Think of Pat Sharpe’s Fun House, only a bit more original and without busty blondes.

Today’s event had all the courses from the old show, and even had the legendary Hall compeering the games. After arriving at the David Beckham Academy in London (by the O2/Millennium Dome) and meeting up with Kevin, food was consumed and people roped into teams.

Most of the journalists (apart from me) were slotted into Team Mario while SEGA staff were bunched into Sonic Team (geddit?). A Nintendo community guy was supposed to join me in Team Tails (which, because there were no orange shirts, resulted in us wearing Mario shirts with yellow wigs) but because he couldn’t make it I forced Kevin to join my posse.

Although we were battling for great victory – ‘to the death’ according to Stuart Hall, bless him – it was all in good fun. We had two Page 3 girls on our team so our focus wasn’t really on winning and more on spectating and letting the models go ahead. Nice. After a quick warm up dance, we were onto the first round.

Which consisted of passing balls from one person to the next and collecting them at the end for points. The second event had one member from each team don a penguin costume and involved grabbing fish from the back of their opponent, then doing battle in a circular arena.

Things started to cook after the first round or two of Tug of War – in which both Team Mario and Team Tails nobbled Sonic Team in (yeah, I have the muscles!) – where we had to run an obstacle course with hard hats balancing balls on top. Then my favourite game took place, where teams had to wear a budgie costume and dive through a hole, run around a ring and leg it back to the starting line.

It is perhaps the most effort I’ve ever put into a press event, and rightly so – pride was on the line! But disaster struck! We lost Kevin spectacularly in the second to last game. Players had to dive head first under an obstacle, run through a tunnel, pick up a ball at the end, run back and dive feet first back through the obstacle to put the ball in the box at the start.

Kevin went first and apparently over-exerted himself – knackered his calfs and required the attention of a paramedic. We were all very concerned. So much so, we took photos of him, I was seen giving the thumbs up and Nuts TV wanted to interview him (to which he replied with many an expletive).

The show must go on though, with the final course being a triangular obstacle where one team member helped others climb over the top. It was here where I caught a foot to the eye – one of the Team Mario guys launched over the top of the course and a stray leg connected with my face.

It’s alright though, my eye got better, and I ran back just in time to see Sonic win in a tug of war against Mario – the two mascots were cheering everyone on the whole time by dancing to Eye of the Tiger. But in a strange counter, Team Mario won the game. At least we took solace in that our mascot was strongest in a tug of war… although seeing him and Mario hold hands was a bit of a jarring sight. UK Resistance won’t like that one bit.

As the Mario Team took their medals and champagne (they were It’s A Knockout medals and not Sonic ones so it was alright) we all went back to the main rooms to eat some more food and play the game we were here for in the first place. Kevin whupped me at the 100m race as Shadow while a free-falling Dream Event resulted in me winning gloriously.

As for the game itself, well. Turns out nobody really played the game an awful lot that day. The day was more about having fun (and getting as much mainstream press there as possible) and we certainly had that. Well, maybe not Kevin, who had to hobble back as if he had rickets. Hopefully he’ll be back up to spec next week, when TSS has an advance playtest of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Be sure you don’t miss it.

NiGHTS: JoD to use Weather Channel [UPDATED]

It’s been rumoured for quite some time now, but SEGA officially announced today that the Weather Channel function will effect the ‘My Dream’ Chao Garden like area of the new and upcoming NiGHTS Journey of Dreams game for Wii.

The channel seems to give impact on the weather conditions of the game mode, showing effects such as Snow, Clouds and Thunderstorms. This is the first Wii title to make use of the Weather Channel in the actual game itself, and just like the origional titles changing music for Saturn (along with Christmas NiGHTS date and clock function) offers something new and uses the latest gaming technology to full advantage. New Sonic Rivals 2 Trailer

A new Sonic Rivals 2 trailer has shown up, it shows footage of the final 2 battle modes out of the 6 – King of the Hill and Tag Mode.

King of the Hill mode is simply battling to earn the most points and keep the highest score while Tag mode is a pass the bomb kind of affair.

Omochao also makes a guest appearance in the King of the Hill mode, I’m guessing he’s a referee because he has a flag and seems to freeze players maybe to penalize them.

In Tag Mode it look’s like each player has a timer in which the bomb will explode if they hold it which is weird. It also look’s like you can ride rockets.

Like most trailers there is no music in this one.

Sonic 3D available on PAL Virtual Console

Fun Fact: Sonic 3D ‘Blast’ was renamed to Sonic 3D: ‘Flickies Island’ for the European release.

The Wiis European Virtual Console update today added another Sonic title to the service, first released in November of 1996 ‘Sonic 3D’ is now downloadable for the cost of 800 points.

Unfortuantly it was the 16-bit Mega Drive/Genesis version uploaded rather than the slightly flashier Saturn or PC versions. It’s still worth a download if you’re interested in playing the classic on your TV sets again, though the game was included with all the other Mega Drive Sonic titles in ‘Sonic Mega Collection’ released for the GameCube back in 2002/3 which I still think is the much better buy, even if it is costing you a little more.
