It’s only been a day since the highly-anticipated Sonic movie trailer dropped, and already fans (including us!) have been scrambling to uncover any Easter Eggs they can find. But a keen-eyed reader seems to have found a pretty good one that throws back to not one, but TWO 1990s Sonic cartoons. UPDATE: Cyborg Eggman — New SatAM Concept Art Found
Update: Even more concept art found.
First up is Rotor, not much to say about this one, other than he looks slightly more cartoonish.
Secondly, we have another Bunnie concept art, she looks a lot more like a robot in this one.
Actually, scratch that, she looks less like a robot/cyborg and more like she’s wearing power armour.
And finally… we have this… Cyborg Robotnik, with electric pony tail.
That is awesome!
Original Story: It’s not unusual to go onto ebay and find animation cels from episodes of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog or any other Sonic cartoon… However, what is odd are finds listed here. A seller who has listed and who has a history of listing official annimation cells from AOSTH and SatAM has listed a bunch of concept art from the show which shows radically different designs for some of the main characters which have never been seen before.
First up is Princess Sally… who is now a human!
Is it just my imagination, or does she look a lot like the Princess from Dragons Lair?
Here is another early concept of Princess Sally who looks more like her final animal form.
There’s something about her which looks Middle Eastern, almost like Princess Jasmine from Aladdin?
Up next is Bugs Bunny’s after an operation… Sorry I mean Bunnie…
Now… this is where things get… stranger…. Behold… Dr Robotnik!
He has devil horns green skin! How is this possible? Do I need to comment further on this? The design looks a lot like a villain from other cartoon shows at the time, but it looks absolutely nothing like Robotnik.
So this next one is a strange one. Mainly because I don’t remember it from any episode, but a golden glow Sonic was also added, however the date would put this very close if not prior to Sonic 2.
And finally we have… the thing which made me roar with laughter when I saw it… Robotnic’s Chicken!
Please… Sega… make this a playable character in Sonic Boom. He can wander around the levels pecking up rings and randomly screaming at enemies. Also here’s a challenge, mod generations so we play as Robotnic’s Chicken, bonus points for custom animations and clucking noises. I also want fanart and comics too!
Thanks to iDEATH & Indigo Rush for the finds.
Full sized and additional images can be found in the gallery.

Robotnik’s Theme, Trombone Edition
For years, fans have wondered “OH GOD! What does Robotnik’s theme sound like when played on a Trombone!?” Well you can wonder no longer.

Next year… if I have won the lottery, I intend to hire this young gentleman, to come to Summer of Sonic, and follow Svend around, to play this theme… all day long.

Christopher Evan Welch Was Not Tails Voice Actor in AoStH
A few days ago, entertainment news magazine Variety reported the news that Christopher Evan Welch had sadly passed away and under his acting credits, listed that he was the voice actor for Tails in the TV show, ‘The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.’
Following information discovered at SegaBits, we can now state that this information is not correct.
What is correct, is that Christopher Evan Welch (aged 48) who is a well respected actor who had roles in War of the Worlds and several TV shows, who entertained thousands of people, has sadly passed away.
However, he was not the voice actor for Tails.
SegaBits were able to reach out to Welch’s family and his acting agency (paradigm) who both confirmed that he was not the voice actor nor had anything to do with the Sonic cartoon show.
So whats happened? Most likely, someone by the name of Christopher Welch (who is in the credits for AoStH) did indeed voice Tails. Meanwhile, someone else by the name of Christopher Evan Welch also started his career around the same time. Upon his death Variety and several other entertainment news sites have made a serious error with the acting credits, hence the confusion and the position we’re now in.
Now this should not at all subtract from the fact that someone who was very well loved and respected has passed away and that there is a family somewhere who have to deal with this loss.
If anyone wishes to donate to Christopher Evan Welch’s daughters college fund, donations may be made to Emma Roberts Welch c/o the Law Offices of Michael W. Hubbard P.O. Box 180656 Dallas, TX. 75218, or via Paypal.com to christopherevanwelchmemorial@yahoo.com.
As mentioned yesterday, our thoughts and condolences are with Christopher’s family at this difficult time.

Roareye Reviews: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFCzBpzJqLA
Roareye Black is back! The creator of community creation talent pool The Sonic Showcase Network is settling down to The Sonic Stadium, and he’s spending some time to give you some unique video reviews on all sorts of Sonic gear. First on his list? The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
This cartoon series ran from 1993 to 1996, and was the more comical, less… serious of two different shows that DiC produced starring the blue blur. Roareye intends to do individual video reviews for each episode of AoStH, but for now he’s created an ‘overview’ of the series in general. Never got to watch AoStH? Check out this video to get the heads up – in a way that only Roareye can.
Let us know what you think in the comments box below – more are coming soon. These videos will be released as part of a big rebuilding initiative of TSS’ Information pages – when new video reviews arrive, episode pages will be created in the currently-limp Animation section of this website. Enjoy!

I think next to Wonchop’s Knux Does Sum Awesum clip, this has been the video I’ve revisited the most recently, purely because it is so amazing.
If I win the lottery between now and August I will pay for Mr. Farfegnugen to follow Dreadknux around at Summer of Sonic playing this all day.
…and pay AAUK to dress as Wes Weasley.
Check out FromtheGang’s Channel on youtube for another version of the theme…this time on a church pipe organ!

Pilot of AoSTH Better Than All 65 Episodes
We got an interesting tip in our inbox about the pilot to that stupid “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog” cartoon. Now, The Nostalgia Critic recently tore it apart and I couldn’t agree more with him. The cartoon was an incredibly pointless romp with abysmal production values. It was terrible compared to the vastly superior SatAM series and cartoons as a whole.
However, this uncovered pilot episode is awesome. One of the animators of the show, Milton Knight, uploaded it onto YouTube last week. It’s seven minutes long and lacks any sound, aside from voice acting, but I found it more entertaining than the series’ 65 episode run. The background landscapes are actually landscapes and are not ugly MSPaint-esque shapes on pastel colors. The art design is pretty cool! Plus, there are many elements from the classic Sonic games that make an appearance. Check out the video below and enjoy:
EDIT: Apparently, our YouTube embedder is all kinds of fucked up. Click here to go straight to YouTube for the pilot.

Nostalgia Critic to ‘review’ Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
If any of you out there are familiar with Screwattack.com’s ‘Angry Video Game Nerd‘, you may well have heard of the Nostalgia Critic. He’s been mentioned in quite a few different episodes throughout the Nerd’s escapades and even starred in a couple of cameo roles. For those of you who haven’t a clue who either are, allow us to explain.
The Nostalgia Critic is a character played by an Internet comedian whom takes the roles of several different people, records some hilarious skits as those characters and uploads them onto the Internet via his website. The Nostalgia Critic is, as you’d expect, a ‘reviewer’ of old eighties and nineties movies and television shows, focusing more on jokes and entertainment than professionally critiquing the subjects themselves.
After recently making a video on Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario’ and ‘The Legend of Zelda’ cartoons, the Critic has decided that it’s SEGA’s turn next, announcing his ‘review’ of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog to be uploaded on the 17th of February.
For a bit of fun, it’ll be interesting to see what the Critic thinks of SEGA’s attempt at an American cartoon compared to his, quire underwhelming, opinions on Nintendo’s efforts. Do keep in mind though, the Nostalgia Critic’s videos are more or less solely for entertainment purposes, it’d be a bit silly to take the video too seriously once it comes online, whether it be good or bad.
Thanks to SSMB member ‘hurtfulthings‘ for the heads up! You can also discuss the video once it comes online next month in the SSMB topic located here.

Long John Baldry Update
Following our report yesterday from various sources, Long John Baldry is recovering well from his treatment in Canada for respiratory problems.
SONIC NEWS learned from various sources yesterday that the blues legend, who was the voice actor for Dr. Robotnik in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, was in a “critical condition”. Some reports had even stated he had died.
Despite the report from SONIC NEWS perhaps being the closest on Baldry’s “stable” condition, the singer was reportedly “peeved” at various British media sources for laying outrageous claims on his health.

Long John Baldry in Critical Condition
Blues singer and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog voice actor, Long John Baldry, has been admitted to hospital with a viral infection, that has reportedly damaged his lungs.
Baldry has recently been hospitalised in London with lung problems. In March he returned to his home in Vancouver, but ended up requiring further treatment. According to spokespeople at Vancouver General Hospital, he is currently in intensive care in a stable condition.
Sonic fans will remember the star as the voice of Doctor Robotnik in US TV Show, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, where he provided evidently the best rendition of the belligerent dictator. Outside the fandom, he has helped bring the likes of Rod Stewart and Elton John to stardom in the music industry.
This disconcerting news follows the sad passing of fellow ‘Eggman’ voice actor, Deem Bristow. Sonic News gives its deepest regards to John and family, and hopes his condition improves soon.
