When Sonic Riders appeared from nowhere just days ago many were rightfully suspicious of the authenticity of these claims coming in think and fast from around the web. It wasn’t to long before scans of the original Famitsu article hit the web, and much to the delight or shock of many fans, Sonic Riders was indeed real and not too far away.
The latest tidbit in the developing Sonic Riders story comes today with Sonic Team’s launch of their official home page for this title, presumably to coincide with the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. At the moment content is a little thin, only a short synopsis of the game (In Japanese) and 14 screenshots, many of which were published in the original Famitsu article.
Also, while you are visiting Sonic Team’s page, be sure to take a look at the Puyo Pop Fever page, which was updated earlier this week with some more details of the soon to be released Puyo Pop Fever 2.
Be sure to stay with SONIC NEWS for more Sonic Riders updates as they occur.

A Japanese video game magazine has provided an article, including pictures, which confirms the existance of Super Monkey Ball for the Nintendo DS.
Super Monkey Ball is a very popular video game series by SEGA that has had a number of console and handheld releases over the years. Many gamers have enjoyed the simple, yet challenging and addictive gameplay and the host of mini-games.
The article comes from a currently unamed video game magazine written entirely in Japanese. Most probably, it comes from Famitsu, one of the most famous and popular magazines in Japan. Continue reading Super Monkey Ball DS: Confirmed

UK Resistance, a simple website revolved around gaming news, was anonymously e-mail high-res photos of Yuji Naka at a Hedgehog Sanctuary in Germany, on the 16 of August.
Having not been given any information other then pictures, we’re left with nothing but to assume what’s happening.
Here, Yuji Naka presents a large check for 1,500 Euros to “NABU”. With that, those hedgehogs should be able to live in paradise for a few months. Continue reading Yuji Naka Visits Hedgehog Sanctuary in Germany

With the pending release of Shadow the Hedgehog, IGN has had a catch-up with project leader Takashi Iizuka about game specifics.
As many people are already aware, the player has the ability to change the course of the game ending and scenario throughout the game, even within the stages themselves. This has been expanded a little upon in this interview:
“Each story’s progression is dependant on the choices that each player makes during the course of the game. Unlike previous games we’ve created, stage order, mid-boss levels, and of course endings, will all be affected by the decisions the gamer makes… Shadow’s appearance does not physically change as he progresses through the game. What is affected is the level of “special powers” that increases, as he develops as either an evil villain or a true hero… We also have mission NPC’s at the beginning of each stage. Shadow will meet both an evil and a good NPC that will provide his mission at the beginning of each stage. If the player decides not to choose either mission, they will continue the game through the “normal” path.” Continue reading Shadow the Hedgehog Interview

The Games Convention in Leipzig was host to a special day of Yuji Naka signage, as SONIC NEWS reported some days ago. Naka-san used the event to showcase Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Rush and Sonic Gems Collection, but he has also revealed that a next generation Sonic the Hedgehog game is in development.
Nothing else has been mentioned, other than the fact that the title exists. First details will pop up at the upcoming Tokyo Games Show in September. Continue reading ‘Sonic Next’ in development

SONICTEAM have just updated their official website for Phantasy Star Universe, the next-generation in exquisite Rappy Bashing.
The website, as all official SEGA sites with any healthy yield of information pre-release, is in Japanese. Since we don’t have the mental strength to read Japanese yet, there’s not a lot that can be obtained from the story other than guesswork (or the hiring of a translator). The story focus does appear to revolve around items called ‘SEED’ however – which, when studying the “World of Phantasy Star Universe” page, appears to be some sort of plant. Most likely with some kind of ‘Phantastical’ (sorry) properties. Or (even more likely) a sort of organisation in the game story. Continue reading Phantasy Star Universe website updated

Everyone’s favourite Ferrari fanatic, Yuji Naka, will be attending a European Games Convention, held in Leipzig, Germany. SEGA-Europe’s German website has revealed details of his special appearance during two days of the event.
August 17th will be a special developer’s-only day which Naka-san will attend, to present the three latest Sonic the Hedgehog titles in the saga (that’s Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Gems Collection and Sonic Rush in case you haven’t been catching up). Echidnas can lay eggs. Our red echidna’s secret is now out. It so happens that the speculation of a new Knuckles game is nothing but a preview for Sonic Mega Collection + on G4TV’s show Cinematech.
At the end of July, G4TV’s show Cinematech put up a summary for a new episode reading: “Come experience the new Prince of Persia and let it run into your heart. As long as the guys from the Sniper Elite trailer don’t shoot it first! Plus, a visual history of the portable Castlevania games await you as you attempt to unveil Knuckles the Echidna’s dark secret. And just for the heck of it, Jet Set Future Radio, Alone in the Dark, Battlestar Galactica, and Stretch Panic make up the rest of the suspects. Happy now? Electronic Gaming Monthly have published in their current September issue, the very first review of Sonic Gems Collection. The EGM staff as expected have not taken much of a liking to the game, understandable though if you keep in mind this compilation was created sheerly with the hardcore fans in mind.
Scoring an average of just above 6/10 EGM describe the compilation as ‘A diamond, two opals and lots of cubic zirconia. Feel The Magic XY/XX was arguably one of the best, if not strangest title to be released with the Nintendo DS last November. It’s no surprise that a sequel is in the works after the games success, the latest incarnation to be titled “Where Do Babies Come From?”. IGN Reports:
Sega has a new DS title in the works from the makers of Feel the Magic. According to reports out of Japan, the new game is a sequel of sorts to the DS launch title, although it has a completely new name, “Akachan wa Dokokara Kuruno?”. This name translates to English as “Where do Babies Come From?”.
The name alone ensures us this title will be the next chapter in the ongoing bizarre love story between our blue haired protagonist and the female whom he chased throughout the first game.

In the latest issue of Nintendo Power, Simon Jeffery comments on the newest coming Sonic games, other current games, and what might be upcoming for Sega.
Interviewer from Nintendo then questions Simon on why he thinks Sonic has done so well in the market since the 16-bit era, while many others have fallen.
“It’s classic character design. It’s the same as the Looney Tunes characters or the Disney characters that were created back in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. So much thought and process went into building Sonic originally back in those days. Many of the other characters that came out of the 16-bit era were created in very a reactionary way. In what may be yet another blow to US fans Sonic Team’s latest compilation, Sonic Gems Collection, will once again not contain bonus additional MegaDrive/Genesis games, just as it is with the previous modern collections.
The Streets of Rage trilogy which was confirmed to appear in the upcoming title has been revealed to not feature in the US version of the game, as reveled by GameSpy in a preview recently published online. SEGA told GameSpy when questioned:

If you’ve been bouncing around internet rumours the past few weeks, you may have heard of a company called ‘Panovation Studios’, a brand new games developer that was reportedly creating an “online Sonic the Hedgehog RPG”.
But the confusion is finally cleared, as Panovation Studios have shut down their online website – the “unofficial-but-official” Sonic the Hedgehog online RPG was never in development.
The Sonic Stadium contacted Mark Greig, chairman of Panovation, for a statement after noticing the studio website had been taken completely offline for several days. According to Greig, the Sonic Online RPG was a complete fabrication by “somebody” that has yet to be caught. It would appear that whoever started these mass rumours played on the studio’s history to make it sound more believeable. Continue reading Panovation Not Making Sonic MMO

When it comes to Sonic merchandise, things have been pretty tough down under, that was, until the recent release of Sonic X on DVD, which it seems has paved the way for more Sonic merchandise such us the soon to be on sale Sonic X figures.

Slated for simply a June release, the toys should be available soon from all major toy retailers with no RRP specified yet.

In Australia, to celebrate Sonic’s 14th Birthday, the Australian Center for the Moving Image dedicated an exhibit for Sonic the Hedgehog, and the fanbase that surrounded it. Our three TSS Reporters for the event, “julz_sega_bob”, “chibi_sonic” and Matt the Yak (of Sonic Vegemite fame) detail their discoveries and opinions on the SSMB Forums.
Julz commented on the Games Area of the exhibit, mentioning the profiling of fansites such as The Sonic Stadium and mutual chums The Green Hill Zone. “The movies contained clippings of someone going through the site, along with a narrative. It was quite hard to get the narrative in video, but from what I heard, it gave a pretty detailed description. It was accurate, showed main areas and didn’t babble off.” Continue reading ACMI: Sonic Exhibit Report

With the amount of money spent on video games, and being home to two of the biggest gaming developers in the world, you’d be forgiven for thinking the UK was actually a third-world country when it comes to the industry. Particularly for Sonic merchandise, where material on the blue blur besides games have all but dried up in comparison to other countries.
One of the biggest conspiracy theories was regarding the lack of a domestic release of the Sonic X cartoon on DVD. Despite having DVD releases in Australia and Holland as long as eight months ago, there had been no word in the (regular, brown) hedgehog haven that is Britain. Continue reading UK Sonic X DVDs

If there’s anyone in the industry who has an eye for new gadgets and consoles like some sort of deranged magpie, it’s Yuji Naka, head of Sonic Team. Sonic fans in America and Japan have been getting the dedicated Sonic micro-site treatment from SEGA as of late, and Europe has just seen the launch of their own official “Sonic City” source.
Unfortunately, the micro-site isn’t very respective of monitor resolutions – 1024×768 is required, but 1152×864 is apparently the size for optimum surfing. Design-wise, it doesn’t lend much to Sonic the Hedgehog at all, aside from the somewhat iconic corkscrew feature around the city heights. In fact, you wouldn’t even believe it was a SEGA or Sonic site if the corporate logos weren’t present (depending on your resolution of course). Continue reading Europe: Sonic City Goes Live

Some days ago TSS reported on a confirmed Sonic online project, although it was not to be revealed by SEGA or SONICTEAM, but rather a small starting company called Panovation Studios.

A member from the SEGA Forums has managed to talk to Panovation Studios, who are apparently working on an online game of Sonic the Hedgehog.
SEGA Forums member “Mondo-Cool” secured an online interview with Mark Greig, “Head Founder” of Panovation Studios, and the result is a confirmation from a incredibly unknown developer that they are legitimately creating an online Sonic title. Greig made distinct comments on the project – which could mean the game is well in development – including the notion that it will be an “Online Sonic RPG”, and not a “Sonic MMORPG”. Bizarre in itself. A small portion of what Mark said is below: Continue reading Online Sonic Game ‘confirmed’

Australia is set to have a nice surprise come Sonic’s birthday – an official SEGA exhibit all about Sonic the Hedgehog! And leading fan website, The Sonic Stadium, is being profiled as an example of Sonic fan culture at the event.
The exhibit, taking place and organised by the Australian Center for the Moving Image (ACMI) will be the second ever video games event the establishment has held, and is fully supported by SEGA-Europe and THQ Australia, who distribute SEGA games in the land down under.
In an agreement between ACMI and The Sonic Stadium, video footage will be recorded of this website, with added voiceovers and information detailing what the site provides in context of fan culture, and displayed in a special section of the Sonic the Hedgehog exhibit. It will be accompanied by a text panel discussing the fan culture surrounding Sonic the Hedgehog, which mentions fangame development such as the popular ‘Neo Sonic Universe’.

A special music concert playing in the US this summer focuses completely on Video Game compositions, and Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the series to be included.
‘Video Games Live’ is a touring concert series that is made up of video game composers, and will be playing a mixture of classic themes from a range of influential computer game series, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and even Pong and Donkey Kong. The concert series will begin its tour in the States at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles (CA) on Wednesday 6th July, and will be hitting various hotspots in the US over the course of the summer.
The composers of the event are video game music maestros themselves, with co-creators Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall having made music for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Earthworm Jim and Jade Empire, Splinter Cell respectively.

IGN XBOX360’s website has given the world first details of a brand new 3D Sonic the Hedgehog title, which confirms that a new game is in the works, and that it is an XBOX360 project.
The event occurred during a special play of SEGA’s upcoming titles – brand new games for next generation include new game ‘Chrome Hounds’, a brand new Virtua Fighter (which is said to rival the graphical of Dead or Alive 4 even in early video form), a reprise of Afterburner and House of the Dead. And the best was saved for last, as a clip of Sonic “moving through a realistic version of the Green Hill Zone” started running. IGN’s commentary on the clip is below:
“A SEGA montage wouldn’t be complete without everyone’s favorite blue mascot. The final segment of the video displayed Sonic the Hedgehog running at full speed down a grassy path. The foliage surrounding Sonic was clearly next-gen material, but it was hard to tell at times because he was moving at an incredible rate. I’d like to imagine that Sonic was moving through a realistic version of Green Hill Zone.
