Sonic Rush Adventure for 14 Quid?

Looks like those who are wanting the latest handheld game pretty bad are being targeted by UK Supermarket Tesco, as the chain store advertises Sonic Rush Adventure in their sales catalogue for a paltry £14.

In what can only be a printing error, the yet-to-be-released Nintendo DS title has been placed alongside other budget titles as Cars and Avatar. It’s one thing to misprint ‘Sonic Rush’ as its sequel due to similarities in name, but the box art is the same as well. Continue reading Sonic Rush Adventure for 14 Quid?

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity trailer revealed

You’ll remember that we mentioned a sequel to the racing game Sonic Riders being announced by SEGA a month or so back. Well, now it’s official – so much, in fact, that an official trailer has been released for the game! (Courtesy of Gametrailers.com)

This trailer includes a small breakdown of the main point of focus in the game, involving tracking down the “shooting star.” In addition, the ability to control gravity is stressed as a main aspect of the gameplay, and is likely a key aspect of the storyline as well.

At this point, no new characters have been revealed, but knowing Sonic Team’s track record so far, there probably will be.

In addition, you’ll also find some screenshots of the game here, courtesy of IGN. Stay tuned to Sonic News for further updates on Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, as well as other future Sonic titles! And do be careful with that gravity control.

Samba De Amigo listed in GameStop database

Well everyone, I’ve just gotten home from GameStop, and I have some fine news for fans of Sonic Team’s critically acclaimed Dreamcast game “Samba De Amigo”. GameStop has the game listed for the Wii, with a release date of Febuary 6th, 2008 at an MSRP of $50. The game was simply listed as “Samba De Amigo”, without any numbers or subtitles in the name, so it’s unknown whether this game is a sequel or a remake of the Dreamcast games.

Keep in mind, this is far from a confirmation, although we have been having a lot of luck with early retail listings lately.Rumor Reporter from Advanced Media, hinted that a Samba game was in development for the Wii back in April. I didn’t report it because I was unsure of his legitmacy, but if this rumor turns out to be true, expect him to be in more Sonic Team related rumor in the future. Details of the upcoming crossover of long time video game rivals Sonic and Mario, have been few and far in between. Today, however, I am happy to bring you the box art for the upcoming mascot crossover:

It’s Australian, hence the G rating symbol, although this is most likely the final box art for all territories. Thoughts?

Even retailers want Sonic to Brawl

Before commenting, please read the article thoroughly, as there have been some misunderstandings.

It has long been speculated that Sonic might be in Nintendo’s upcoming fighter Super Smash Bros Brawl. Now, two of North America’s biggest game related retailers, Best Buy and GameStop, haven added even more fuel to the fire, by apparrently including Sonic in their own SSBB ads. Keep in mind that these ads where made by their respective retail companies, and are by NO MEANS a confirmation of Sonic being in the game. This stuff isn’t from Nintendo or SEGA. These ads are very simple cop y and paste affairs using pre-exisiting CGI promotional images from SEGA and Nintendo. Such practices are very common among retailers that make their own ads, and the Wii logo in the ad used below is very commonly used in makeshift (fake) box shots in GameStop ads. PLAY Magazine: Sonic Riders Sequel Details

The English Playstation 2 magazine PLAY have featured a Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity article in the September issue of the magazine! The article divulges several details, not least of all the fact that Jet the Hawk (Of original Sonic Riders fame) is set to return alongside a few more new yet currently unrevealed characters.

According to the 2-page preview’s text regarding the story, Sonic the Hedgehog himself discovers an odd artifact that contains the power to alter gravity itself (Possibly alluded to in the game’s title), sparking the interest of his Extreme gear rival Jet the hawk. Naturally, a clash breaks out between the two over dominance of the mysterious artifact, leading them to settle their score over a few Extreme gear races across such courses known as ‘Botanical kingdom’ and Crimson Crater’, the former being the first stage and the latter being the second. More NiGHTS Media

Again, as this is mostly media oriented, no need for much of my blathering.

The NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams box art:

Looks pretty...

The NiGHTS Video with in game music:

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams video

It should be noted that the sound is a bit out of sync with the video, and the boss music starts way early, nevertheless this seems to be the official music. As a NiGHTS fan, I rather like the first one. The second one…sounds fitting, but a bit weird to me.

Edit: Apparently, my source might have been wrong about this music being “official”. As a result, I’m going to regard this as a rumor until something more concrete is shown. I apologize for jumping the gun on this.

As an added bonus, anyone who logs in, plays, and buys a Guardian License will receive a free “Real Handgun”, seen above. Hm, that hand looks awfully familiar…

Smash Bros Brawl: “Sonic’s Already In The Game”

A Spanish interview with Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai reveals that Sonic the Hedgehog is already present in the Nintendo fighting game, and awaits SEGA’s approval before implementing him into the final product.

The interview, initially posted by Shakidna on Sonic CulT forums and then translated by ICEknight of The GHZ, is the first real confirmation of Sonic’s existence in the game, and is no doubt news to get many fans excited.

Responding to a direct question of “Are you going to include SEGA’s mascot, Sonic The Hedgehog?”, Sakurai gives the following:

“Well… That’s a tough question, I’ll tell you that Sonic’s already in the game, but we’re still waiting for a last confirmation from SEGA. Due to the proximity of the game’s release, SEGA’s deadline to submit their confirmation is the 26th this month, and in that date the official site will be updated about the inclusion or not of SEGA’s mascot in the game. I’m personally crossing my fingers.”

Sonic X-Treme prototype released early

If you’ve been paying attention to Sonic News at all, you’ll have noticed this article that we posted not too long ago. It said that a Sonic X-Treme prototype would be released on July 18th, available for anyone to take a look at.

Well, as it turns out, someone attempted to leak it early, and this prompted ASSEMbler to make a formal release earlier on. So, today, July 16th, 2007, the developmental Sonic X-Treme release has finally been shown the light of day!

Download is available by bittorrent here, and a rapidshare mirror has been made of it here.

A big thanks to ASSEMbler for making this public! Enjoy and all that. It isn’t much, admittedly, but come on – what would your friends say if you told them you played an unreleased game? You’d be the top bloke in your group of mates. Or something.

Here’s the download links again, just in case you’re lazy (like me):

E3 is here, kiddies, and with it comes the long awaited goodies we’ve been… waiting for. The following Sonic Team games will be at E3:

Sonic X-Treme prototype to be released to public?

Rumors have been spreading, both private and in public, about a public release of a test engine of the lost Sonic game, Sonic X-Treme, which was originally planned to debut as “the” Sonic game on the Sega Saturn, which was later scrapped and replaced with the far-inferior Sonic 3D Blast, which, even though it had a nice soundtrack, was mediocre compared to what X-Treme had offered.

According to various forum posts on both Sonic CulT and the Sonic 2 Beta page, local scener HXC, Sonic X-Treme research extraordinare, ASSEMbler, of ASSEMblergames.com has obtained a copy of a Sonic X-Treme test build, which was up for auction a couple of years beforehand, and was auctioned off to a collector, who had the game for an extended period of time. Now, rumors have spread that this developmental build of Sonic X-Treme will be released to the public on July 18th, free for anyone to download and research. Sonic 06 Unearthed

We don’t normally cover stuff like this (hacking discoveries and whatnot), but we felt this was interesting enough to warrant a news story.

If you’ve ever been to Sonic CulT, S2Beta, or the like, you’d know that they tend to specialize in ROM hacking, and reverse engineering of Sonic games. Local guru, Link, decided to take that a step further, and delve into Sonic the Hedgehog, for Xbox 360.

What he found was certainly interesting.

In addition to many nifty tweaks, such as tweaking Tails’ gameplay to not suck, he made a single key discovery; one the likes of which hadn’t been seen in a Sonic game for years beforehand. Continue reading Sonic 06 Unearthed

Factory, who recently also released other Sonic the Hedgehog series (SatAM) have neared completion of the new DVD set and TVShowsOnDVD.com have reported some exciting new details about the much anticipated release.

Sonic Rush Adventure Confirmed!

Avast ye scurvy dogs!

Late this afternoon it was confirmed by both SEGA Europe and SEGA America, that development is now underway on a sequel to the Sonic Rush title, speculated a few weeks back on TSS. Sonic Rush Adventure is set to wash up on the shores in time for the Autumn this year.

Sonic will this time be pitted against a motley crew of Pirates, while fighting through 7 action-packed stages. Keeping in tradition of Sonic Rush, the game is pegged to “seemlessly Utilise” both of the DS screens once more. Not only that, but players will be able to assemble an Armada of ships to sail the seas, gathering rings, performing tricks and engaging in battles with other ships; all using the DS stylus control. New Sonic Rush game in the works?

A member of the Sonic Stadium Message Board has dug up a new trademark filed by SEGA on April 2nd 2007, for a product titled “Sonic Rush Adventure”. SEGA neither confirmed or denied such a project when we contacted them this morning.

Sonic Rush was revered as the best Sonic game of recent years when it was released on Nintendo DS in 2005, but it was largely ignored for its home console flop Shadow the Hedgehog instead. This trademark, using a similar name, suggests that a sequel is perhaps in the works. Considering the insane popularity of the DS handheld worldwide, that’s probably not a bad idea.

It is worth pointing out that many trademarks taken out by companies with the best intentions of releasing it as a product end up cancelled or the result of stillborn ideas. Judging by the nature of the title itself, SEGA could even be taking out a trademark to protect the ‘Sonic Rush’/’Sonic Adventure’ name from potential unauthorised games from other companies. So there is a chance that this could turn out to be nothing.

But hey, if it does… more wonderful 2.5D platforming may await us. Many thanks to super sleuth Keiji Dragon from SSMB for the tip. You can view the trademark for yourself here.

New info on the upcoming Nights game

Sega has recently revealed new information regarding Nights 2. The game’s official name is “Nights: Journey of Dreams”. It will feature 7 new worlds, 3 new powers up called “Persona Masks”, a 2 player mode, will use the WiiConnect24 feature to allow players to send currently unknown items to friends Wiis, and will make use of the Wii’s forecast channel to change the scenery in accordance to the seasons.

The Persona Masks offer new shape shifting abilities to allow Nights to better navigate the land of Nightopia:

  • Dragon mask: Transforms NiGHTS into a huge dragon and makes him resistant to wind effects.
  • Dolphin mask: NiGHTS can change into a dolphin and explore under water.
  • Rocket mask: NiGHTS takes the shape of a rocket and travels at supersonic speeds.

Little else is known about Nights: Journey of Dreams. Stay tuned!
