Sega Trademarks “Sonic Gems Collection”

By using the Search Form on the US Patent Office website, type in “Sonic Gems Collection”. It seems our friends at Sega have trademarked this title on March 7th, there is also a Sonic styled trademark image on that page as well. Though we are unsure if this is a new game, or maybe Sega/Sonic Team are finally gonna give us the games we want in a collection, those being Sonic CD, Sonic The Fighters, and SegaSonic Arcade? We can only dream, as usual.

Yuji Naka Hints at Sonic & Mario

In the latest issue of NOM Magazine, Yuji Naka has a quick exclusive interview. Yuji Naka discusses a new Sonic GameCube title, as well as the new Sonic DS game. There is also a strange hint at a possible Sonic & Mario video game, we can only dream. Below is the article:

Sonic Team head, Yuji Naka, revealed two new Sonic the Hedgehog games for Nintendo in an exclusive interview with NOM in London at the end of last year.

“We are in development with a new GameCube Sonic game, which we hope to release before the end of 2005,” Naka exclusively revealed to us. “Sonic Team is also currently making a Sonic game for the DS. We are taking our time to make sure the game makes good use of the DS’s many new features.” Double whammy!

PS Universe Magazine Scan, More Info

Games Are Fun recently reported on Phantasy Star Universe, revealing more information and a Japanese scan. The report says that the game will be released in both US and Japan in November, and that PSU will appear in the next Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine as the cover story. The scan below has what appears to be the two main characters, as well as some cutscene screenshots from the actual game.

Phantasy Star Universe Information

As you can see from the past report, Phantasy Star Universe will be released on the Playstation 2, PC, and Xbox. But that still is not known, as theres dozens of reports that say this game will be released only on the PS2 and PC. Also what has been said, is this game will be a follow up to the original Phantasy Star series, and not the PSO series.

So who do you believe? Right now, we just have to look at all of this as pure rumors. Right now a majority of rumors suggest that Phantasy Star Universe will be a regular RPG and not a MMORPG, giving storyline details on the characters and where the game takes place.

Phantasy Star Universe will take place throughout the Graal solar system, which consists of three planets and various races such as the Numans. After a century of peace following a lengthy period of war, civilization now faces an invasion from a new alien force named the SEED, which has begun attacking different colonies in space.

Phantasy Star Universe Confirmed; GC Not Invited

In news that is bound to amaze in some ways and bore in others… SEGA have announced what everyone’s already known since E3 2004: the ‘true’ sequel to the inspiring Dreamcast MMORPG Phantasy Star Online.

What fans were not clued up on until now however, is platform specifics. Regarding the last few Gamecube incarnations and Sonic Team head Yuji Naka publically stating that Sonic Team fans will need Nintendo’s purple box, many would have been dead set on Phantasy Star Universe appearing on Nintendo.

It appears Phantasy Star Universe will be heading to PC, PlayStation 2 and XBOX, with no Gamecube version currently in plans.

Sonic Fan Games HQ Shut Down

Sonic Fan Games HQ was shut down for reasons unconfirmed on Tuesday – whereas SFGHQ owners were unavailable for comment, the problem has been revealed by fans of the website.

Visit SFGHQ and a visitor is greeted with a page including the text: “For a ‘lose lose’ situation, it sure feels like I won…”. As dubious and confusing as it sounds, regular IRC #SRB2 Channel member Gerbilsoft (speaking to us yesterday at the TSS IRC Chatroom) has revealed to SONIC NEWS some information that may shed some light on the situation:

Smidge [the current maintainer of SFGHQ] took the site down… some guy threatened to hack it unless Smidge either gave him ops in #srb2 or made him a mod on SFGHQ and apparently Smidge decided to just take down the site.

Sonic Takes Spot on the ‘Walk Of Game’

Since the recent discussion and interest on Shadow The Hedgehog, there was not a respectable news report on celebrating Sonic being inducted into the ‘Walk of Game’. On Tuesday, March 8th, Sonic was inducted along with Mario, Halo, Nolan Bushnell, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Link. Sonic The Hedgehog beat out such competition as Solid Snake (Metal Gear) and Lara Croft (Tomb Raider). The 6 inductees of the ‘Walk of Game’ were the very first in its history.

Several New Sonic Games This Year

In an announcement made earlier this week by their press FTP, SEGA America confirm Shadow the Hedgehog is only one of ‘several’ new Sonic games coming from the franchise in 2005.

Taken from the PDF released by Sega,

“In addition to presenting a retrospective Sonic video, SEGA of America president Simon Jeffery and Takashi Iizuka, game director, SEGA Studio USA surprised attendees of the ‘Walk of Game’ induction ceremony with a sneak-peek of a mysterious trailer labeled Shadow the Hedgehog; one of several new projects coming from the Sonic franchise in 2005. NEW GAME: Shadow the Hedgehog

On the 8th March, the Game Developer’s Conference’s “Walk of Game” ceremony was the time for SEGA America to display its new game in development: Shadow the Hedgehog.

As Sonic the Hedgehog was awarded a place in the Walk of Game, SEGA took the opportunity to speak at length about Sonic’s achievements. This followed a trailer where Sonic’s brief game history was shot to pieces by an approaching Shadow, gun in hand.

The gameplay in the brief, trailer video included familiar Sonic Adventure 2 level design aspects coupled with the novelty of shooting, as seen in other platformers such as Ratchet and Clank. More game features were teased, involving various ‘Sonic Battle’ style charge moves and some sort of ‘hyperspeed’ warping mode.

Initial Impression: Fans go “WTF?”

The unveiling of Shadow the Hedgehog took place on the 8th March in America, where the ‘Walk of Game’ celebrations were taking place. Sonic the Hedgehog was the first entry into the ‘Walk’, and SEGA celebrated and were understandably happy. Ironically, that’s where they decided to first show this little “beaut”. Hmmm.

It has come to this. It’s amazing just how much of a pull idiot gotho-choice Shadow has on teenager fanboys/fangirls. His appearance in Sonic Adventure 2 was cool. His return (from his timely death) in Sonic Heroes just annoyed everyone. And now we get a whole GAME on this bumbling whinger? You know Shadow’s only here to cash in on silly goth-compulsive-depressants anyway, but hey if that’s your bag, so be it. The popular “word on the street” is that this game was derived from opinions set in a survey organised by SEGA of America some time back. This survey asked fans what kind of Sonic spinoff game they would most like to see. This isn’t the case, as the movie shows it has been some way into production, so the survey must have just been a hint/teaser. Although I still wouldn’t be surprised to see those results and find millions of rabid Shadow loonies craving for more. He’s dead already!

Character quibbles aside, ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’ is a game starring everyone’s “favourite” sulky git. Nothing’s been revealed aside from the trailer TSS has seen, and from the looks of things it appears a lot like a ‘backwards step’ to Sonic Adventure 2 style stages, with Sonic Heroes graphics. Did we mention Shadow has a gun?

Oh yes. For the perfect case of “dumbing down”, this game also has the added “value” of weaponry. Shadow is seen with at least two guns at his arsenal, a pistol and a machine gun (…I can’t believe I’m typing this description on a Sonic website…). Looking to mix Sonic style platforming with… shooting, Shadow the Hedgehog looks like the designs we’d more likely see from a slightly demented fangame.

While we’re obviously none too impressed that SEGA and Sonic Team have decided to go downmarket with the Sonic series and selling itself to the lowest common denominator possible, there is still some aspects of the game that seem intruiging, funny as it sounds. Notably, strange meters at the top of the screen – perhaps indicating some sort of charge move. If we were to go with this assumption, the most obvious candidate would be a Chaos Control maneouvre. More moves include something akin to his ‘Sonic Battle’ actions, and some sort of “hyperspeed” mode where Shadow is flying across a plane of obstacles at high speed. Again, probably linked with Chaos Control. The idea of guns may be some sort of inspiration from Ratchet and Clank, but to be honest when the idea of guns is crap anyway who gives a toss? And again with the whole “Choose to be good or evil” rubbish. Seriously SEGA, it’s getting old. The whole thing reeks of 2001 again. With guns. And 100% more “Shadowy” (cringes).

We’re hoping upon hope that if anything, this game will at least shed some light on all the Shadow plotholes that Sonic Team created in Sonic Heroes. Because that way at least all questions are answered and he can just sod off to where he came from (his crater-shaped grave). If this isn’t the last Shadow game (or last game with Shadow IN IT), then we’re in for a very sad end to the Sonic the Hedgehog series as we know it.

Good news though, is that this game is NOT the new Sonic the Hedgehog game Yuji Naka is banging on about for Nintendo Gamecube. He’s stipulated time and time again that the new SONIC will be revealed (and playable) at E3 in May. Which only calls to question who had the brain fart that spawned this idea. Hopefully Sonic Team Japan aren’t paying too much attention to this; an easily forgettable spinoff that’s likely to be as dull as the character starring in it. As always though, we remain open-minded and won’t give you definitive reactions until we’ve played it. Just don’t hold your breath for anything special. Or good. Stay with TSS for updates.

Woo, DRED is ALIVE

How’s it going guys? A big update today, as I said yesterday. First off, Sonic Kid sent us a huge bunch of scans and the Sonic X French Theme, so you can view and download all those things. It’s called for a new section for the Comics Zone called Foreign Comics. The Sonic X Theme can be found in the Sonic X section. Flare Gamer who is constructing a cool site asked me for an interview a few weeks back, and you can read the transcript here if you got nothing better to do. AND, there was also the TSS Timeline update made yesterday, which has a complete psychological history of TSS during 2004 up till this present day. For more updates, check out TSS’ front page, under “Latest Updates”.

But for more exciting things, looking ahead now! The Sonic Stadium will be FIVE YEARS OLD in October. October 24th to be exact. And what does a major Sonic site need to make its existence complete? Why, the legendary 1 MILLION VISIT count of course. If you check the Site Meter for The Sonic Stadium you can see that we are close to the 1M mark. Granted, it’s a fair way off, but it’s worth shouting about, even this early. 903,500 unique visitors have entered TSS since October 24th, 2000 (on last count; today at 8:22pm GMT). At this rate we’ll be hitting that target in a month or two! Exciting. 😀 Anyway, enjoy those updates.

SONIC NEWS: Coming Soon

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates in a month or so. Things are kinda slow on the Sonic front anyway, save for the NOM Yuji Naka Interview that everyone at GameSpot seemed to misinterpret (apparently NiGHTS 2 and Burning Rangers 2 was in development). The SSMB was the first place to check this out and completely debunk those rumours, as it appears Naka-san actually said nothing of the sort at all. Oh, you crazy kids. Head to the SSMB for more mature Sonic discussion and lovin’.

On another note, work on TSS “Interactive” (the codename I apparently seemed to have given the project) is well underway, but work’s stalled a bit to focus on more important things. Namely, the re-launch of SONIC NEWS, one of the best resources for the latest Sonic Team news. A team of reporters will now be on the case to bring you the latest of Sonic around the world, in the stead of pioneer Sonic_Hedgehogs. We’re working on the new SN mini-site, and should have a full relaunch within a week or so. I know, crazy innit. Of course, we will let you know closer to the time.

SONIC NEWS: Want Ads

As you may or may not have read, The Sonic Stadium is undergoing a vast metamorphosis. The end result – when we ever finish – is to provide a much bigger TSS website, that will be easier to update (which means updating will be more frequent) and also interactive, so that you will be able to submit things via the site itself. An integration with the SSMB will also see the account being renamed to the TSS Account, in order to imply Universality between all TSSNET sites. Which, funnily enough, is the plan.

As part of this renovation, a well-known favourite will be returning to TSS Space. Yep, the world’s favourite news resource, SONIC NEWS, will be returning very soon under a brand new mini-site, and will also incorporate the TSS Account. B’man and I have been working hard many nights to even get to this stage, and it would appear SN will be finished much quicker than normal – literally a matter of one or two weeks!

Told ya there was more…

You know, it feels so good to be able to find time to update my site once again. ^_^ This is the third update I’ve made in four days, and it feels great to be finally updating everything that has been submitted as far back as August ’04 (again, sorry for those who submitted stuff and had to wait so long! o_o).

At time of writing, today’s update is rather niche. I’m attempting to bring the Archie Sonic Comics section bang up to date, and that’s rather hard, not living in America and all. 😛 Rally the Cheetah’s being a superstar with her submissions, and today’s scans include front covers for the last few months, plus some Sonic Specials, AND covers for not only Issue 0, but an alternate Issues 1, 2 and 3. These aren’t the Issues 1, 2 and 3 you know from July ’93 onwards, these were Issues of Archie that began a few months before then. After some digging for more info and scans, we should have information on them.

“Dull, Without Substance”, yet oh so good. TSS.

I went into GAME the other day, foolishly thinking it was 4th February (Sonic Mega Collection +‘s release date). But still, I got a free T-Shirt out of pre-ordering there. AND, I got to meet a great gal working there. We were talking about Sonic for ages, and it was great. A shout to to her, BTW. Anyway, there goes my big boycott of GAME, well and truly buggered.

But it’s not all bad news. Apparently, according to some rather misinformed people, the news that OUR Sonic News section provides to TSSZNews is apparently the only thing keeping TSS alive. Also, The Sonic Stadium is dull, without personality, and has no substance or information at all whatsoever . I’m sure you all feel the same right, clicking those links and actually knowing that TSS is the biggest information resource for Sonic the Hedgehog, with the most intellectual and fun-loving community alive. 😉 Still, it doesn’t really matter, those doomsayers keep coming back to TSS all the time to check our information and downloads, so we must be doing something right. li3k, an UpDat!

Got a press release from SEGA today – TakeTwo Interactive has effectively bought out Visual Concepts and Kush Games. For those that don’t really care or know (that’s everyone outside of America, then), they are the SEGA divisions that brought us the Sports 2K Series. The acquisition will see SEGA no longer owning the developer’s rights to these games. TakeTwo and SEGA are also apparently going to work together to bring Visual Concepts games to arcades – be it Sports 2K or something else we dunno. Finally, the agreement will apparently include SEGA publishing and distributing the 2K series in Japan and Asia. I’ll post the whole press kaboodle on the SSMB later. Deem Bristow, Dr Eggman VA, Dead at 57

Jenifer Irwin of the webcomic “The Ruins of the Fourth Wall” recieved an email from Ryan Drummond recently, informing her of the loss of the voice-actor Deem Bristow, who was known for his work as English Dr. Eggman in the recent Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Favored among fans all over as the most “popular” voice-actor to don the character as Robotnik, Bristow died suddenly at a singles dance club on January 15th, 2005, cause of death is unknown at this time. Bristow did the voice for Eggman in the English-Dubbed versions of Sonic Adventure 1, 2, Shuffle, and most recently, Sonic Heroes. Continue reading Deem Bristow, Dr Eggman VA, Dead at 57

Yeah, about time eh? >P Sorry about the wait in update, naturally as things get rolling during the kickback into Real Life™ education, things will naturally be a touch slower. Seeings as there’s not much talk on Sonic as it is at the moment anyway, what a good time to actually do what many other places aren’t and update. 😀 Super Sonic Scansday’s not forgotten, in fact, it’s just begun. Sonic Battle: Professor Gerald’s Journal

The following are the journal entries that you can unlock in Sonic Battle. To access them, you will need to complete the Story Mode twice over. Maybe more if you’re lucky ;P It’s a good read though, and shows the background of Sonic Battle crosses over with the events of Sonic Adventure 2, just before Gerald went off his grapefruit and went on a vengeance bender. This information was sent to us by Tonykewv1.

Entry 1:

I have uncovered a most interesting specimen from the warehouse. I believe it some sort of puppet or robot made by an ancient people. At first, I didn’t think anything of it, but when I was experimenting with ‘Chaos Emeralds’, it began to move. This suggests the possibility that even the ancient civilizations could harness the power of the ‘Chaos Emeralds’. When I was researching various papers related to the ‘Chaos Emeralds’ and this robot, I discovered that there was a possibility that this robot was something incredible. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but this robot may be the cause of the fall of the fourth great civilization. I’m not sure I believe it just yet, though.

Entry 2:

I’m no longer able to ignore the possibility that this robot did in fact destroy the fourth Great Civilization. I have discovered a stone tablet that explains as much. According to the tablet, “When the figure falls from the heavens, and the Stone of the gods is joined, all that exists will become one again”. Though it is difficult to believe, this robot has been watching my movements, and mimicking all that I do. I was amazed by my scans of this being. Surprising, reams and reams of data scrolled and caused my most powerful computer to crash. More intriguing was that the data was all about melee combat and weapons of that age. Eventually, if the being is ever restored to its former state it will put all the data to use, and recreate all the weaponry and combat abilities that it once had! And that’s not all. If my guesses are correct, it will also have the ability to absorb modern weaponry as well. What have I done? I have uncovered a horrible weapon!

Entry 3:

I now understand why this being was named “Gizoid”. In the ancient tongue, it means “everything”. According to the stone tablet, if the Gizoid establishes a ‘link’ with someone, the Gizoid will swear loyalty to that person. Perhaps it still lacks ‘Chaos Emerald’ energy, but it has been saying the word “link” to me in broken tones it went on to explain: “Show me your true strength, and I shall obey. I am all things, and shall belong to me”. So as it suggested, I brought before it my collection of model guns, and fired them all. Then suddenly it said “I shall follow your every command, and never leave you side”. And since then, it refuses to listen to anyone but me. While is still is a fearsome weapon of destruction, at least it won’t be used for evil. However, If someone with evil intentions where to form a ‘Link’ with the Gizoid… I don’t even want to think about what will happen. I must research how one can re-establish a ‘Link’ with the Gizoid…

Entry 4:

The upper echelon is going crazy. Perhaps they aim to freeze project ‘Shadow’. Soon, the ultimate life form ‘Shadow’ will be completed… The application to my granddaughter is also imminent. I cannot just let them stop my study at this point. Because I am the only one who can save my granddaughter’s life.

Entry 5:

… The higher ups are threatening to shut down this research facility. I had no choice but to hand them the Gizoid to buy more time for my research. I tried to be careful and commanded it to never absorb weapons. Apparently, the way to cause the Gizoid to form a ‘Link’ is to show it power that surpasses that of its former master. While this poses immense danger, I cannot risk losing Maria.

Entry 6:

My worst fears have come true. The Gizoid has absorbed enough weaponry and technology that it has started to got out of control. The resulting rampage resulted in the destruction of most of the “Ark”! I have deciphered the rest of the stone tablet. It says, “When the Gizoid had learned all that it could it become a god of wrath and destroyed all”. The researchers somehow managed to subdue the Gizoid and sealed it away. Luckily it only had one ‘Chaos Emerald’ installed. If it where to have all 7 Emeralds installed, it might of destroyed the planet. The Gizoid is too much of a liability. I tried destroying the core, but nothing I did worked. I understand too little of the technology that built him. My best hope is to try and reprogram its AI into a free-will, emotions-based AI…

Entry 7:

I have heard there was an accident at the research facility. …. ….. ….. Everything! Everything is gone.
My Maria’s name was among the list of casualties. My beloved Granddaughter! They tell me her parting words were, “Bring hope to humanity”. I have decided that the keyword to activate the Gizoids free-will emotions-based AI program will be those very words. “Bring hope to humanity”. My poor, poor Maria!

Entry 8:

A heritage of the past I dug out, “Gizoid”! And the ultimate life form I created by my own hands “Shadow”; I equipped both weapons with ‘heart’. If all powers are not obtained for oneself, but what is to be from heart’s that yearn for someone, I believe all conflicts should cease to exist. Please if anyone listening to my prayers: Bring hope to humanity.

TSS’ 4th Birthday!

Games Section, TSS’ 4th…

Well, basically, if the content pages of some Game sections look messed up, just bear with it. We’re in the midst of modifying the Game Section to make it more accessible to you, and the first game pages to use this new system is the newly announced Feel the Magic and Sonic 1 on Mega Drive. On another note, the SSMB Forums are undergoing a makeover for it’s 3rd Birthday, and we’re preparing things for both Halloween and TSS’ FOURTH Birthday on the 24th October – which also brings the Awards Ceremony of the Sonic Site Awards. More details to appear on the Official SSA Website tomorrow. Should really update that banner rotation too while I’m at it.

As for the SAGE Coverage, due to everything going on and the apparent lack of things on show at the event, I don’t think I will be making a Coverage report this time. Sorry guys @ SAGE and the boothists – however I DID manage to interview Mj2 and The Dying Informant; the amazing people behind Chaos Control, one of the most anticipated Fan Games in production. That interview will be going up in a few days, regardless.

Preview Log: Feel the Magic!

A love-dating sim? It doesn’t seem to be Sonic Team’s style now, does it? And you’d be right – Feel The Magic is being developed, like Space Channel 5, Rez and Astro Boy before it, by the artist formerly known as United Game Artists. UGA have always had a flair for innovative artistic display, and Feel The Magic looks set to break the boundaries of at least the Sonic Team label.

The graphics are shaping up to be superbly unique, suiting the cult-like following and niche audiences UGA have recieved from their past projects. The graphics use both the 2D and 3D capabilities of the Nintendo DS console: at times the silhouetted characters turn out to be actual polygonal figures as well, and the design of the entire game produces an air of cool not seen since the ‘status quo’ already established with the Apple iPod adverts. And how much more niche could you get for the Western market too – Dating titles are very much a gaming delicacy best served in its native Japanese homeland, but this brave move to retail Feel The Magic to even America is as bold as the colourful graphics themselves.

Not that any of us should be complaining; it saves us all the trouble of importing it, doesn’t it? And far from being one of the generic and confusing love quests littering Japan, Feel The Magic actually keeps things as entertaining and as simple as possible. You play as yourself (albeit not ‘with’ said person, else that kind of denounces the point of the game), a guy who desperately falls in love with the hottest gal in town. But she’s not putting out so easily. She wants you to show how much you will dedicate yourself to her. She wants to be impressed. She wants a guy to truly love her, and treat her like a true gent (you being the gent, not her).

At this juncture, usually you would expect a bunch of annoying, tedious and rampantly agitating adventure quests and modes, chatting up her friends to maybe see what she likes best and all that tosh. Feel The Magic really does have some tricks up it’s proverbial sleeve, choosing to stick to short, amusing and downright wacky mini-games. Think more along the lines of Wario Ware on Game Boy Advance, but with an actual love interest theme. And the games revealed so far sound very innovative and promising:

In one mini-game, a random dude manages to eat all sorts of sealife animals. On the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS, using the touch screen you must push the animals out of the person’s stomach and up his throat so that he can then regurgitate them out of his fat gob (shown on the top screen of your NDS) with cheeky grin and all. Another allows you to clean the apple of your eye, as she falls face first into a pile of crud, while in a similar touchy game you must pick scorpions off of your potential Valentine, whilst being careful to not actually rub her up yourself (she’ll get a little annoyed you’re not bothering to pick the scorpions off her back if your hands start a-wandering…). One really imaginitive aspect that struck me as fantastic was the way even the Nintendo DS microphone was being used: one mini-game has you trying to blow out candles, and you do this by blowing into your DS Mic. The DS can detect how hard you are blowing (easy) and will show on the touch screen accordingly. Thus, if you blow too hard (oi) you could end up winding yourself.

The touch screen and microphone are apparently the only functions of the Nintendo DS being used for this game, to keep things relatively simple throughout, and with 30 mini-games like the ones mentioned above, including tapping bulls to avoid a stampede and digging for your love’s lost possessions on the beach, you can tell United Game Artists will help turn Sonic Team back into the cult original developer it once was during it’s Burning Rangers hey-days. This is going to be an incredibly quirky game that uses the DS’ functions and makes perfect display of the things that make the new handheld unique. It will be released as a launch title in Japan and in America too, and that shouldn’t leave much doubt for a launch title proposal for Europe too, pray the powers above.
