Yet Another Christmas With Sonic, by BalenaProductions!

We are but a stone’s throw from Christmas now, and boy, what a year it has been for us!

We ended up revisiting a remastered pair of classics of days past, special thanks to Sonic Retro community members Taxman and Stealth for a job well done. With new moves in our arsenal, we went and ventured across worlds unseen on the Lost Hex and took down the dastardly devious Deadly Six. Over the summer, Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom brought people together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of all things metal and hedgehog like no other. Courtesy of Capcom of America for the pitch, Ian Flynn and the wonderful staff at Archie Comics brought Sonic and Rock together for a 12 part comic crossover of Mega proportions through Worlds Collide. The cherry on top, provided by the good folks at Hardlight Studios, came in the form of an endless runner called Sonic Dash for iOS and FINALLY Android devices, where players rose to the pair of Global Challenges issued and won!

But for now, with the end of the year at our doorstep, it’s time to set all the adrenaline aside, sit back, relax, and roast some chestnuts over an open fire… or prepare some chilli dogs over an open grill… as we partake in a holiday tradition approved by jolly old Saint Nick himself — Christmas stories! And just like last year, we’ve got one of Sonic and the gang (including the likes of Tails, Knuckles, Manic, Sonia, Vector, Shadow… S…Stan…?) right here from our pals Steve and RianaLD via BalenaProductions!

Shenmue’s Ryō Hazuki Leaked as ASRT DLC via Yogscast Charity Stream

RYOHAZUKI_ASRT3

Aw yeah, this is happenin’!

Though there is no confirmation as to which platforms outside of PC will be receiving this, if any, it has nonetheless been revealed through the recent Yogscast Humble Bundle charity stream that Ryō Hazuki of the Dreamcast cult classic Shenmue series will be hitting the streets of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in the near future!

In November of last year, Steve “S0L” Lycett of SUMO Digital had challenged fans to vote among a slew of SEGA characters to decide a top three for ASRT DLC coming down the line. Since then, a number of exclusive characters, mainly from SEGA’s own PC-centric titles, have found their way into the PC version of the game, but Ryō, who won by a landslide of 3379 votes, marks himself as the first DLC character to have come as a result of the community polls.

RYOHAZUKI_ASRT2

We’ll keep you posted once word has come as to what platforms Ryō is expected to arrive on, and when!

Now let’s see, who were the runners-up again…?

After the Archie Megaman and Sonic meet up which of course lead to the inevitable (warning spoilers ahead) beating up of both the blue blur’s major foes (Megaman and Sonic). Things are not quiet same in Sonic’s World.

At all Costs (issue 252) picks up where Worlds collide left off  back on mobius but the world isn’t the same place it was before Worlds Collide.

sth-252

SONIC IS BACK and facing the HUGE consequences of the mega-hit Sonic/Mega Man crossover story arc in “At All Costs” Part Two! As the crossover crashed to a close, Sonic and Tails have returned to a world which is reeling from the cataclysmic effects of the Eggman/Wily genesis wave! The damage was severe, the threats have changed, and the mysteries are piling up! What has happened to Naugus in this new landscape? What is the final fate of Sally Acorn? Sonic and Tails are ready to tackle all the drama ahead of them—but first they must survive the wrath of the terrifying Tails Doll!

From there, we launch into the new saga Countdown to Chaos, part  one (issue 253) Sonic and his trusty sidekick Knuckles… okay I kid you all know it’s Tails journey to find their missing friends in the hopes of restoring the world they only vaguely remember.

STH-253

The biggest, most shocking event in Sonic comic history is underway, and YOU can grab a front-row seat in “Countdown to Chaos” part one! Sonic and Tails are on a journey to the Mystic Ruins jungle in search of their missing pals. What they encounter is sure to surprise you! Meanwhile, Dr. Eggman begins the long trek back to his deadly Death Egg II battle fortress. Will our heroes find him and stop him before he launches again? And just who, or what, is the “Sky Patrol” and what does it have to do with the missing Freedom Fighters? Don’t miss a moment of the chaos, featuring the first in a series of ALL-NEW inter-connecting covers by Sonic art superstar Ben Bates, and bone-chilling variant cover by T.REX!

Part 2 (issue 254) see’s the the return of a long time Archie mainstay after his rather sad… err how to put this… what’s the tactful way of saying he was bedridden with horrific injuries obtained while defending the realm? Huh guess there isn’t really a tactful way, anyway look Antoine is back and he’s all magically better! (Also it’s not spoilers if the returning character teased in the official synopsis is on the front cover)

sth-254

The long-awaited debut of the NEW Freedom Fighters CONTINUES! The mysteries deepen as Sonic and Tails find their long lost pal Antoine! But what is the state of our formerly fallen fellow freedom fighter? What has Uncle Chuck’s research uncovered about the nature of the dark power they’ve found seeping from the earth? And an unlikely return of a character you won’t expect alongside Uncle Chuck! PLUS—Eggman versus G.U.N.! The prize: Eggman’s life!

Part 3 (issue 255) see’s the return of another Freedom Fighter main stay that has been sadley missing lately, I’m starting to detect a theme here, are you?

sth-255

The Freedom Fighters are one step closer to completion with the bombastic, bouncing debut of the battlin’ Bunnie Rabbot! But the journey isn’t over yet—some of Sonic’s teammates are still missing, and it’s up to the blue blur and his best buddy Tails to find them! What shocking secrets will our heroes uncover? And just what is the “countdown to chaos” counting down to? Meanwhile, Dr. Eggman returns to the Death Egg to test out his dire predictions. Is it possible that the unspeakable evil known as Eggman could be the only one who can save the world?

You know what? I think I was on to something with the theme, because guess who makes a much needed return in part 4 (issue 256)? I’ll give you one hint, she’s on the front cover, you know the one wearing the new clothes which caused outrage amongst the old archie fans when the re-design was first announced… yes that one.

sth-256

It’s the dramatic conclusion to the epic ‘Countdown to Chaos’ saga! In Part Four, it’s a race against time as the countdown reaches its thrilling end! Metal Sonic is out to kill Sally and the Death Egg II has launched-things are not going well for our true blue hero! Can he and Tails get to the Aquatic Ruins Zone in time to save the day? And what horrifying discovery awaits Dr. Eggman? You definitely won’t want to miss this earth-shattering climax of the storyline that shook the Sonic comic books to the core!

Issue 252 landed in comic book stores in October, 253 in November. 254 is out this month, 255 in January and issue 256 in February.

EDIT: Oh and a quick shout out to HypTS for linking to this awesome image of the Countdown to Chaos covers put together.

Sonic Lost World Wii U Patch Coming Soon

While no release date has been shared (though all guesses point to ‘incoming’!), an upcoming patch for the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World is now on its way!

Quoted verbatim from the SEGA Blog update, players should expect the following changes will be incorporated into the game:

Sonic Lost World

  • Collecting 100 rings will now grant the player an extra life.
  • In the event of a Game Over, we have doubled the amount of lives the player will begin with when continuing. (From 5  to 10)
  • The Indigo Asteroid, Crimson Eagle, Orange Rocket, and Black Bomb Color Powers can now be controlled using the analog stick and buttons.
  • Fixed a rare graphical issue that would sometimes appear during the pinball section of the Frozen Factory casino area.
  • When completing the NiGHTMARE DLC, users will be notified that they can re-play it after scoring 100,000 points.
  • Items will now appear on the world map.

These changes are sure to come to the relief of many, especially the returning bonus life per 100 rings mainstay given the game’s steep learning curve, so owners of SLW U should  be sure to have their consoles connected and at the ready once the patch rolls out!

Friday Five: Worst Sonic games of the past generation

"I wonder how hard it is to get vomit stains off of quills?"
“I wonder how hard it is to get vomit stains off of quills?”

Surprisingly, as hard as it was coming up with five good games from the past generation, it was even harder to come up with five bad ones!….With one exception of course and you all know what that one is and yes, it’s #1. In fact, some of the games on this list are actually fairly enjoyable. So I took off the “No spinoffs” rule this time and had to go with more “disappointing” or “blah” than outright “bad”. This does help show that Sonic’s been more on an upswing since the horrible 2002-2006 era, but it also shows were Sonic has fallen back.

Remember folks, these are just my personal opinions and yours may vary. Also remember that the previous generation is only Wii, 360, PS3, PSP and DS. Enjoy!

Christopher Evan Welch Was Not Tails Voice Actor in AoStH

christopherevanwelch

A few days ago, entertainment news magazine Variety reported the news that Christopher Evan Welch had sadly passed away and under his acting credits, listed that he was the voice actor for Tails in the TV show, ‘The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.’

Following information discovered at SegaBits, we can now state that this information is not correct.

What is correct, is that Christopher Evan Welch (aged 48) who is a well respected actor who had roles in War of the Worlds and several TV shows, who entertained thousands of people, has sadly passed away.

However, he was not the voice actor for Tails.

SegaBits were able to reach out to Welch’s family and his acting agency (paradigm) who both confirmed that he was not the voice actor nor had anything to do with the Sonic cartoon show.

So whats happened? Most likely, someone by the name of Christopher Welch (who is in the credits for AoStH) did indeed voice Tails. Meanwhile, someone else by the name of Christopher Evan Welch also started his career around the same time. Upon his death Variety and several other entertainment news sites have made a serious error with the acting credits, hence the confusion and the position we’re now in.

Now this should not at all subtract from the fact that someone who was very well loved and respected has passed away and that there is a family somewhere who have to deal with this loss.

If anyone wishes to donate to Christopher Evan Welch’s daughters college fund, donations may be made to Emma Roberts Welch c/o the Law Offices of Michael W. Hubbard P.O. Box 180656 Dallas, TX. 75218, or via Paypal.com to christopherevanwelchmemorial@yahoo.com.

As mentioned yesterday, our thoughts and condolences are with Christopher’s family at this difficult time.

Christopher Evan Welch Has Died

christopher-evan-welch

Uupdate: Following new information released by Welch’s family and acting agency, it turns out that he was not the voice actor for Tails or had anything to do with the Sonic cartoon show.

Please see our newest story for details.

Original Story: It has been brought to our attention that AoStH voice actor Christopher Evan Welch, who played the role of Tails has passed away. His agency Paradigm confirmed that Welch was filming for HBO in LA when he died early Monday morning in hospital, he is believed to have been 48.

Many early fans will have memories of his voice acting career as Tails, in the television series “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.” However, he was also a very well respected actor, having roles on Broadway and film credits that include Spielberg’s “The War of the Worlds” and Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

Our thoughts and condolences are with Christopher’s family at this difficult time.

Sonic Lost World OST out now on iTunes

lostworldostwithoutboundaries

“Without Boundaries”, the original soundtrack for Sonic Lost World, was released in Japan as a physical 3 CD set last week. However, in a surprising move for those of us in other regions, SEGA has revealed via their blog that the soundtrack can also now be downloaded via iTunes and Amazon MP3.

You can download all 93 tracks digitally, one disc at a time. Each disc, or ‘volume’, will set you back £7.99 (meaning the total cost of the OST comes to £23.97) or you can purchase individual tracks for 79p apiece.

Will you be downloading the Sonic Lost World soundtrack? Let us know in the comments!
