It’s finally coming out, and bizarrely before a Japanese release date has been revealed. Sega just revealed that both Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sega Ages Puyo Puyo Tsu are coming to both NA and EU on Feb 20th. Sega also opened up the western page for the game as seen here.
Earlier we covered that Sega Ages Sonic 2 will feature Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 built-in, as well as the Drop Dash ability (from Sonic Mania and Sega Ages Sonic 1), online rankings, plus the 3DS version’s Ring Keeper Mode and Super Sonic Mode.
Are you buying Sonic 2 on Switch, either for the first time or as another version purchased? Let us know in the comments below!

SEGA’s Japanese Twitter account has revealed the names of for voice actors for the upcoming Japanese dub of Paramount’s Sonic movie.
All of these actors are pretty prolific, with long resumes, although none of them have done voice work in previous Sonic products.
Taishi Nakagawa will voice Sonic, Kōichi Yamadera will voice Dr.Robotnik/Eggman, Yuichi Nakamura will voice Sonic’s cop buddy Tom, and Marina Inoue will voice Maddie. While none of them have ever been featured in a Sonic project before, Yamadera did apparently narrate a Sonic Adventure commercial in the nineties!
Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog will be released in the Americas and Europe on February 14, with the Japanese releasing following over a month later on March 27.

After a VERY long absence since being revealed back in September 2018, Sega Ages: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has finally resurfaced via the newest issue of the Japanese magazine Famitsu! While there’s no date just yet, we did get a key new tidbit; it will indeed include the lock-on content Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that allows you to play through the entire game as Knuckles. Japan is around 8 hours ahead of the UK, which means that as we write this right now, it’s already January 1, 2020 in the country. Sonic Team and SEGA has wasted no time in celebrating the turn of the new decade, with a cool new graphic and a new hashtag campaign that may be used to promote new Sonic projects over the next year. It’s been a period of song releases hasn’t it? Well to celebrate Halloween, Sega through their official Japanese Sonic Channel YouTube channel have uploaded a remix of the Pumpkin Hill level song (properly called A Ghost’s Pumpkin Soup) from Sonic Adventure 2. The remix was done by Tomoya Ohtani, who as some may remember was the man behind all of Knuckles’ themes in Sonic Adventure 2 in the first place!

Sega has just released a Mario and Sonic at the Olympics Tokyo 2020 demo onto the Japanese E-Shop. The demo is in full English and contains seven events. Five from the normal, Olympic games and two from the Tokyo 1964 mode. The events include 110m Hurdles, Surfing, Karate, Badminton and Archery on the Olympics side, along with Long Jump and 10m Platform Diving on the 1964 side. You can play as Mario, Sonic, Bowser, and Dr, Eggman in the Olympic events or just Mario and Sonic in the 1964 events. You can also add an analog mode to the 1964 events to give it that CRT TV look.

This year is the 20th Anniversary of the Western release of the Sega Dreamcast and flagship launch title Sonic Adventure (its European anniversary was actually yesterday)! But, while everyone can talk about the game’s original release until the cows come home, a lot less remembered is its Gamecube/PC port, Sonic Adventure DX. Let’s take a Look Back at it! While Sega of America did show off a great, new Mario and Sonic 2020 trailer, there was a bit left out. The Sega of Japan trailer seems to show off a lot more of the game. In the four-minute trailer, we get a sample of the 21 events in the main game, along with 10 events for the 1964 retro mode. Speaking of, the story mode is shown off a bit and appears to center around time travel as Mario, Sonic and a few of their friends end up in 1964 Tokyo. The trailer also shows off some of the dream events including a skating event through Metropolitan Highway from Sonic Forces. There’s even dream events in the 1964 mode as well, bringing the event count to well above 31!
This trailer’s got me hyped! Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is starting to look like it could be the best one yet. Race to the store when it hits November 5th in the U.S. and November 8th in Europe on the Nintendo Switch.

Forgive the lateness of our podcast as we recorded this one a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean it’s not chock full of Sonic-ey goodness! In this episode we discuss Jason’s trip to E3, the fan revival of Sonic Runners, Sonic Revolution 2019, Funko Pop Sonic cereal, an unofficial Sonic book that uses fanmade images and much, much more. Because hey, who needs copyrights when you can just slap a bunch of images together, right?
Special Note: We used the cover from the plagiarized Carlton Sonic book for this month’s podcast image. That render on that plagiarized book was created by Deviant Art user FinnAkira, and you can find it here.

Have you ever baked a pizza, taken it out of the oven, and imagined that Sonic the Hedgehog was slicing it for you? I don’t mean like an underpaid Pizza Hut employee, I mean actually curling into his legendary spin attack and rationing out that cheesy goodness? …no? Just me? Well, maybe these fantasies will no longer be so niche, as SEGA has catered to the food utensil market with their upcoming Sonic-themed Pizza Cutter!

While a good chunk of Sega’s booth was dedicated to Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, there was a corner showing off some of Sega’s other properties slated for release later this year. Among them was the Sega Genesis Mini, Sega’s answer to the NES and SNES Classic. I sat down in a bean bag (which means my fat rump had a hard time getting back up) and sampled SEGA’s miniaturized console.
The first thing you’ll notice when playing the demo at E3 is that the part of the booth you’re at looks like a living room, complete with a bean bag to sit in. Much like the virtual living room in some of the recent Genesis compilations, there are posters of Genesis games everywhere, along with with old VHS tapes with cheesy labels like “Cartoon collection! Do not erase!!” on them. They really went all-in on the “90’s bedroom” aesthetic.
The nostalgia doesn’t stop with the booth aesthetic, as the mini console itself gets a lot right. Its controller has an ergonomic feel and shape that perfectly replicates the original, and the console itself is a faithful, shrunk-down recreation of SEGA’s 16-bit system. Once you boot the mini console up, you’re treated to a screen filled with about a dozen Genesis titles, with the rest coming into view as you scroll down. I don’t know if I care for this, as it shrinks down the box art and makes each game feel less important. Hopefully, the interface can customized in the final product.
Despite the September release date, the console already feels ready for release, as all 42 games were playable on the show floor. I went with Mega Man: The Wily Wars and Road Rash 2 for this preview. Both played great and judging by Road Rash 2 alone, are identical to their original versions. The emulation is perfect.
Holding start for five seconds brings up a menu where you can make a save state and exit back to the main menu. There’s your usual options such as screen filters and what aspect ratio you want the game in, but one of the most interesting features is the language menu. You can set the game menu to many different languages and the games will play in their original language as well. Going back to aspect ratio, another neat feature is that many of the games feature a more natural 16:9 aspect ratio by zooming in on the game while keeping the UI in place. Sonic 2 was shown off as an example of that. It keeps the sprites from looking stretched, but at the cost of zooming in on the picture a bit.
Overall, with a great controller, cool menu features and pixel perfect emulation, the Sega Genesis Mini is something to get hyped for. It blows the old AtGames Genesis consoles out of the water in every way, and should definitely be worth picking up come September.
In addition to the regular kiosks, SEGA also had a Genesis Mini running on a giant, 5-foot-wide Genesis controller that folks could play Streets of Rage and Sonic 2 on. When I tried to play Sonic 2’s Chemical Plant level, I had to stretch my arms out and punch the A button with my first just to get around. While it was a neat novelty, it wasn’t exactly the most wieldy controller, since I couldn’t even spindash with it.
Still, even on this giant cumbersome monstrosity, I was able to get enough rings to enter the special special. As I began maneuvering Sonic and Tails through the half-pipe, a crowd formed around me. Despite the massive controller, I made it through and even got a small amount of applause! Here’s hoping SEGA’s booth features and equally cool gimmick next E3.

As part of Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct, we got a new look at Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 for Switch. We got to see new footage of numerous events, as well as the release month of November 2019.
Sega also opened the website for the game showcasing the numerous events they’ve announced so far, starting with four new ones:
– Surfing – Snow Board
– Karate – Kumite
– Sport Climbing
– Skateboarding – Park
Sega also confirmed numerous characters, all returning from the previous games so far. The website displays Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser from the Mario series, and Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, and Eggman from Sonic’s series. However, others were shown in the trailer, including Donkey Kong and Silver.
Sega also confirmed the return of online multiplayer for the first time since Sochi 2014, though to what extent is not currently clear.
The trailer may also briefly features retro graphics for one of the events. Whether this is simply a flourish for the trailer, or a legitimate game mode is currently unknown.
Finally there are a few new screenshots to check out below:

Update (March 30th, 2019 at 9:16AM ET):
Sega have just announced the western release of the games. The Mario & Sonic game for Switch is now called Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The arcade game of course is titled Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – Arcade Edition. Finally, the mobile game is titled Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020.
For some reason, the Tokyo 2020 branding is missing from the logos, but the games are titled as such on the website as well as by Sega in their announcement tweet. All seem to still be published by Sega in the west (a first since London 2012), in fact Sega are publishing the games worldwide, which is a first in Japan where Nintendo published the Mario & Sonic series to date prior. Also, the arcade and mobile games are now dated for Summer 2020 in the west, rather than just the generic 2020 date in Japan. Check out the western website here.

At the SEGA FES 2019 event it was announced that the Mario & Sonic series will return with Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Switch. Not only that, a separate arcade game, simply titled Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Arcade Game, was additionally revealed, alongside a Sonic-only mobile game for both iOS and Andriod; Sonic at the Olympic Games.
SEGA previously announced back in October 2016, that they had secured the gaming license for the Tokyo 2020 games, but no confirmation was made that the Mario & Sonic series would be returning alongside Sega’s other more photorealistic Olympic video games to tie in with the event.
The title will be the 6th Olympic game title to feature Mario and Sonic following the Olympic game and Winter Olympic game titles.
Via the official Olympic Video Games website, the Switch game is due to release in Japan in Winter 2019. The arcade game is due sometime in 2020. Finally the mobile game is also due in 2020.
Here are the logos of each game plus two high-quality screenshots of the Switch game. I also included screencaps of the trailer, with all but the last being the Switch game, with the last being the mobile game:
