Freak-Out Friday: Segata Sanshiro, SEGA’s Greatest Hero

Consider this Freak-Out Friday a history lesson in gaming, one that dates back to the bygone era of the mid-1990s.

What’s that? “This doesn’t have anything to do with Sonic the Hedgehog,” you say?

You fools.

What you are about to bear witness to has everything to do with Sonic. In fact, this is about something much, much bigger than Sonic, for had it not been for this man, the Blue Blur — no, SEGA as a whole — would not be around today.

More screens and footage of M&S Rio Arcade Edition

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition

Sega and Nintendo have finally opened the official Japanese site of the Arcade Edition of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and includes footage from a variety of events in the game.

So far as playable characters go, we just have the usual characters including Mario, Yoshi, Sonic, Knuckles, Bowser, Peach, Eggman, Amy, Luigi, Wario, Tails, Shadow, Bowser Jr., DK, Metal Sonic, and Vector. The site teases at least four more to be unveiled, but naturally they’re surely to be any of the other known characters in the 3DS versions’ 40 total.

Among the events showcased is the classic 100m, which you can see below, with more in the events page.

And just a few of the small screens provided below. There are quite a bit more shown when clicking on a character in the characters page.

New Sonic Podcast & E-tail Store Coming Soon?

25th events

Continuing with the Toy Fair news comes a tiny bit of information about a previously unannounced thing.

According to a sign at Tomy’s booth at the New York Toy Fair, there is a new Sonic Podcast in the words to be broadcast via Podcast One.

But even more interesting is that it looks like Sega/Tomy might be launching a new Sonic themed online store. This is strange because Sega did launch Sonic Merchandise several years ago which is still trading at this time.

No other details were given, but we’ll keep you upto date as and when more information comes in.

  • YouTube Unboxing Events & Original Videos.

GDC is March 14-18th, SXSW is March 11-20th and Comic Con is July 21st.

The rest, anyone’s guess, but one of the interesting things is the Unboxing Events, have they just accidentally confirmed a collectors edition of a game with that one?

I for one am quite interested in the 25th Anniversary Party.

Sonic Boom Fire Ice 2016

Upon closer inspection of the same poster that confirms Fire & Ice’s delay to Fall 2016 (again from Tomy’s booth at the New York Toy Fair), we also get the first indication of not only a time frame, but a month of June 2016 for the Wii U version of Rio Olympics’ release.

Sonic Boom Season Two Coming Fall 2016

Toy manufacturer Tomy have revealed that the season two of the popular Sonic Boom cartoon is scheduled to launch Fall 2016.

Announced to be getting a second season last year, Tomy revealed via a flyer at Toy Fair 2016 the cartoon was scheduled to return later this year – only a year after it finished its initial season run of 52 episodes. Sonic Boom Fire & Ice Delayed Until Fall 2016

Sonic Boom Fire Ice 2016

Well it took a while, but pics from Tomy’s booth at the New York Toy Fair have finally leaked out and they contain some news which nobody was expecting.

Some of this information I do not believe is correct at all, however here it is because it’s the most official thing we’ve got.

First of all, the most unlikely bit of news, that being the two game launches in 2016, I doubt these will be the only ones, but yeah there it is.

However the other bit of news is that Boom Fire & Ice appears to have been delayed to the end of 2016! That’s… a lot later than many predicted, but thinking about it, it makes sense given the lack of information about it since it was first announced.

Those expecting an early 2016 release, looks like it’ll now be a Christmas release.

No Modern Sonic Licensing Rights to be Issued in 2016?

sonic2thlicensingcover

So the latest issue of Licensing Today Worldwide has a rather nice surprise on the cover, it’s Sonic! Inside the issue there is a two page interview with Jason Rice, Sega’s Director of Brand Licensing for EMEA.

Despite this, most of the information is already known, except for one really odd detail.

sonic25thThat being, the Sonic franchise is divided into two licensing programmes; Sonic Boom and Classic Sonic. Wait…. what about Modern Sonic? Well… that’s the thing, Modern Sonic is not mentioned at all anywhere in the article.

Stranger still is that when you look at the imagery used in the article, it’s just Classic and Boom, whilst Modern Sonic is present, it’s just in a group shot showing how Sonic’s design has changed over the years.

Now the article is for the 25th/2016 celebrations, so it’s likely that Sega are just putting the Modern Sonic license on hiatus for a while.

But this is really interesting, we’ve speculated for a while that the 25th anniversary would be a Classic focused affair, with several companies confirming they’re making Classic themed products, but it’s never been stated that the Modern Sonic license isn’t being issued for the 25th?

Given how Modern Sonic appears on the cover and Sega have been using him in their promotional material, odds are he’s not been axed or is now just classic Sonic, even if that’s how the article initially reads, but it’s beginning to look a lot like there won’t be any Modern Sonic merchandise produced for the 25th anniversary, unless the Classic Sonic License now includes Modern Sonic?

Eggman’s new Japanese voice actor revealed to be Motomu Kiyokawa

Motomu Kiyokawa Eggman

With the release of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on 3DS in Japan, we now know the new Japanese voice of Eggman to be Motomu Kiyokawa.

Motomu Kiyokama succeeds the late Chikao Ohtsuka, who voiced Eggman from Sonic Adventure 1 all the way to the Sonic Boom games. Chikao Ohtsuka sadly passed away on January 15th, 2015 due to a Ischemic Heart Disorder.

Among Motomu Kiyokama’s Japanese voice acting credits include Thomas in the 90’s Virtua Fighter TV show, as well as the Mahogany Town Gym Leader Pryce (from Gold and Silver) in the Pokémon anime.

The news of the new voice actor came from our own Tracker on our forum, and we even have a clip from a Vine account by a user with a copy of the game which you can view here (make sure to enable sound).

Thanks go to both for the news.

The8BitDrummer Played an Amazing Cover of the Entire Sonic 3 & Knuckles OST in One Take!

Sonic 3 & Knuckles, compared to the original Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel, had an entire team of artists behind the game’s musical score, compared to the talents of Masato Nakamura working on the first two games in the series solo. Spearheaded by the late Michael Jackson, the King of Pop himself, and Brad Buxer, the result was that nine different composers had worked on the soundtrack for the 1994 SEGA Genesis classic, leading to an incredibly cinematic and highly varied OST that still resonates with fans to this day. Comic Update: Hmm, The Train is Late

Like, really late in the case of some of these.

Im quooootiiiiing2
I’ve already given my Western cartoon quote for the article, sorry.

So as you may recall, Sonic Universe #82 got its official preview the start of January, and everyone figured that meant the end of the dry spell that usually happens around the time of December. As it turns out, that hasn’t been the case, and Sonic the Hedgehog #279 is now slated for release on February 24th. I guess we can’t really dance around the issue forever, so now would be a good a time as any to address the elephant in the room; there’s been delays to Sonic stuff for a good while now. Here’s just a quick summary of the situation so far;

Graphically Not Present

We start with the graphic novels, and these go a long way back in comparison to everything else. The first graphic novel series to face the music was the Knuckles Archive, albeit this one appears to have had different circumstances compared to the others. With KA#4 released in April 2013 and cover images existing for KA#5 and 6, people waited a long while to try and pre-order these books. In a very small window of opportunity, some individuals managed to do so, only for Amazon to cancel them as the publisher had cancelled the issues according to their statement. This one probably isn’t involved, as it’s clear what its fate was long beforehand.

The rest of the graphic novel books are in murkier waters. Remember when we had solicits for the Babylon Rising Sonic Universe volume, or Sonic Boom volume 1? They were lost in the server wipe, but we had them. These are just a couple of examples of the number of graphic novels that have been simply delayed constantly. The last GN releases of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Archives, Sonic Universe, Sonic Saga and Mega Man were all in January or February of last year, so we haven’t seen a regular graphic novel come out in over a year across the board! Even worse, Sonic Boom and Worlds Unite’s graphic novel series haven’t even had a foot out the door yet!

Knuckles Archives 5
See this? You will never get this.

Even amongst these, some special cases came up;

  • Sonic Select #10 came out in January 2015 too, but unlike the others there was no hint of a continuation. Given that the GN series was meant to cover the specials and one-off issues, and pretty much all of them had been done by the time SS#10 came out, It’s easy to see why the plug was pulled on that.
  • Best of Sonic was originally due to have issue 3 come out, it focusing on rivals following BoS#2 focusing on villains, but it ended up as Best of Sonic: Ultimate Edition (the difference was that basically all the rival stuff was interspersed with stories from the other two volumes, and any Scourge assets made for the book weren’t included), and was a surefire end to that series.
  • Sonic Legacy was the black and white omnibus series, with its last physical release being Sonic Legacy #3. Sonic Legacy #4 did come out in December 2014, but only as a digital title, with the back page explicitly telling the reader that it was the last issue.
  • Sonic Super Special Magazine didn’t even get that much; the last physical release was SSSM#13 in January 2015, but SSSM#14 got a brief digital release before it was pulled, and it hasn’t seen the light of day since. With SSSM#15’s planned exclusive content being shifted over to Sonic Super Digest #15, it’s safe to say that’s cancelled too.

There’s been precisely two exceptions to this. Worlds Collide: The Complete Epic was originally slated for a May 2015 release. but it too seemed to suffer the terrible delays. After Archie missed the promised revised release date of December 2015, it finally hit the shops in January 2016. The Sonic Super Digest series, while facing some schedule hiccups, has been releasing at a steady rate throughout all this, and is the only trade series unaffected…at least on the surface.

Boomed Out

To tie in with the release of the games and cartoon for the newly revealed Sonic Boom branch, Archie released a comic series that stuck true to the comedic and more episodic stylings of said branch, as opposed to the action/adventure style of the Archie-exclusive comic universe. While it didn’t set the charts on fire (it was below Sonic the Hedgehog for all of its run bar the first issue, and it was often a bit below Sonic Universe as well), it did decently in numbers, certainly enough to keep it going long after Sonic Boom had established itself. But when the eleventh issue rolled around, some solicitations indicated that this was to be the last issue all of a sudden, and this was confirmed by Archie themselves. Around this same time, Mega Man was announced to be going on an indefinite hiatus, so the fate of that comic is up in the air. And to be clear, the cancellation was not because of sales or SEGA. So, less being late and more never arriving.

The Issue With Issues

Finally, we get onto the most recent chapter in the story, and the one that’s visibly affecting coverage here. Everything was absolutely fine for release schedules, aside from Sonic the Hedgehog slipping a single week but running with it. Then, out of nowhere, both Sonic Universe #82 and Sonic the Hedgehog #279 became complete no-shows for their slated release dates (back in November/December). December delays are nothing new, but in those cases the delay happened for a month at most for the issue in December, and then January picked it right up. Here, Sonic Universe #82 was supposed to be released at the end of November, but didn’t come until mid-January (and even then, it seems a lot of people haven’t got it, still). Sonic the Hedgehog #279 was due out early to mid -December, and is now currently slated for the end of February, which for the record is over two months apart (and there’s whispers in the wind of subscribers being warned of another delay on top of that, although that’s not confirmed).

goldwater silberkleit
If we went into the staff conflict, we’d be going over the age rating.

Potential Causes

Now then, this brings us to the obvious question one can ask; Do we know of any potential causes for this? Well, we can only speculate at this point, but we do have a pretty solid idea of which possibilities are most likely. For the sake of thoroughness, I’ll go through every vein I can find.

  • The lawsuit; You know the drill, Archie went to court over the copyrights of a portion of the characters they were using, that reached a settlement point and Archie made sure they wouldn’t cross that bridge again by excising everyone not by their current staff from the comic. But given that these characters were also appearing in stories in the graphic novels, how much of an impact would they be hit with? Probably not as much as you think. Ironically, the most affected appears to have been the still-running Digests. They used to cover the entire span of the comic up to SSD#8 (released in August 2014). SSD#9 (October 2014) reduced this to comics only made since Ian took over writing duties, and we haven’t seen any stories that have been pre-reboot and featured characters removed in the reboot since SSD#10 (December 2014) (The pre-reboot stories we have seen since have been from Treasure Team Tango, the Sonic Generations tie-in and Babylon Rising part 1, all of which only feature game characters). Aside from this, the only time the lawsuit has come into play was when shipments of KA#3 were attempted to be halted.
  • Archie themselves; It’s no secret that Archie haven’t exactly had a smooth time in past few years. Behind the scenes, it’s been littered with conflicts between staff, but the biggest event has to have been the Archie reboot Kickstarter. In May 2015, Archie (the publisher) announced that they wanted to reboot Archie (the franchise and character), so they were trying to raise $350,000 on Kickstarter for it. Because of their still prevalent name, some wondered why they couldn’t just fund it themselves. Things became even worse when it was revealed that the Kickstarter came about because they had the chance to get rack space at big supermarkets like Target and Wal-Mart, since this was essentially a snub to smaller comic sellers. Just five days after the start, Archie cancelled the Kickstarter due to the controversy. The reboot still went ahead, but funded out of pocket. Naturally, this much financial strain would have a very wide-feeling effect. Sonic Boom’s cancellation and Mega-Man’s hiatus are suspected to be direct repercussions for the Kickstarter fiasco, but it would hardly be surprising if it was affecting their ability to manage their graphic novel releases. As for the actual running series? Possibly, although there have also been storms around the East Coast that would not help in the slightest bit.

No matter what the cause turns out to be, we’re not going to be done with waiting for a good while yet, as all of the currently slated release dates for the delayed volumes are at least July 2016.

Time Will Tell

Valentines issue
Happy May Day!

So, what’s going to happen regarding all this in the upcoming months? Well, for Sonic Boom, that’s going to stay gone, but Archie have said that they want to do new Boom stories in Digest, so we might be able to see that in future volumes. There’s no set date for Mega Man’s return, but with the announced cartoon series they might want to use that as an opportunity for a relaunch. The running Sonic series may be delayed longer than usual, but I doubt it’s stopping anytime soon, we’re just going to have to put up with missing a quarter (third potentially) of the year, which is going to make things like the Valentines variant funny when it comes out three months late. As for the graphic novels? We have the Sonic Comics Spectacular coming next week, but otherwise Arche haven’t said a word on the delays, so we’ll just have to be wary.

No matter what happens, it’s always our priority to make sure you guys are informed as quickly as possible about upcoming releases or sudden news bulletins, so keep an eye out and you’ll be the first to know about any progression made.

Nazo Unleashed Sequel Reveals Intro Sequence, Release Date

Chakra-X has revealed a teaser for the intro sequence for his sequel to the popular fan creation Sonic: Nazo Unleashed on his YouTube channel, where he’s announced you can support him during the creation of the independently animated project via Patreon – aiming for a release in 2019.

In the clip, we see Sonic, Tails and Knuckles flying to face Dr. Eggman in his newest battleship to regain the Master Emerald, once again lost by Knuckles through a not-so-smart trick. You can garner a sample of the quality of animation here – I think we can all agree, it’s very impressive!

A sequel to the original three part hit series released originally on Newgrounds, The Wrath of Nazo will be a 30 minute special providing closure on the final scene teased in the final part of the trilogy. The original series is still extremely popular, with a recent re-release titled “Nazo Unleashed DX” in 2014 amassing over 8 million views. His first ever YouTube edition of the show in 2008 gathered over 12 million views on Part 1.

Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 launches 8th April in Europe

Ca2E5ctW4AAruIi

Just announced via Nintendo of Europe’s official Twitter page, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be hitting European store shelves in a couple of months on Friday 8th April. Starring gaming’s two biggest icons in their fifth sporting crossover since 2007, the new game in the best-selling franchise promises more characters, more events, and more fun than ever before.

This follows the recent announcement from Nintendo of America that Mario & Sonic’s latest Olympic face-off would be arriving across the pond on 18th March, a few weeks prior to the newly announced European release date.

Please note both of these dates are only for the 3DS version of the game, with the Wii U version following later in the year – presumably to coincide with the launch of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games themselves. We’ll keep you posted as soon as an official date is revealed.

Are you excited to see Mario & Sonic in Rio? Will you be picking up the 3DS version on 18th March or 8th April, depending on your region? Let us know in the comments!

Sony’s Sonic Movie Delayed To 2018

SonicMovie

Hajime Satomi, President and CEO of SEGA Sammy Holdings, may have just dropped word that Sony Pictures’ upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been pushed back to 2018.

In an interview with The Worldfolio, Satomi speaks of the future entertainment prospects and strategies of the company, where he briefly touches upon the upcoming feature film. This is the first time there’s been official word on its progress since the reveal two years ago.

On the innovation angle, what kind of next-generation concepts are Sega Sammy working on?

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

Announced in 2014, the movie is envisioned as a live action/animated hybrid, similar to other popular cinematic reimaginings of classic franchises such as “The Smurfs” or “Alvin and the Chipmunks”. Animation will be supplied by Marza Animation Planet, who have provided various CG opening for Sonic and other SEGA franchises in the past.

Sonic Paradox Reclaims Their Old YouTube Channel, Only for Eggman to Hijack It

sonicparadoxchannelreturns
Alternatively: Sonic Paradox got its old channel back, and uploaded a fun little Eggman animation to celebrate! Watch it below!

Around a year and a half ago, longtime Sonic fan animation community Sonic Paradox had its collective YouTube channel hacked into and stolen.  Hopes of reclaiming their old network would fade with Google technical support not being of any help, and a backup channel was made from that point on.

Thanks to their YouTube partner over the course of the past few months, however everything is now right as rain again: Sonic Paradox has its old channel back!

Well, almost. Rotund evil genius Doctor Eggman just took control of the recently reclaimed Sonic Paradox channel while the staff busied themselves with undoing the damage caused by the original hacker; with their attention focused elsewhere, Robotnik announced his plans to overthrow the Sonic Paradox “dictatorship” and start a new series of Robotnik Shorts. His plan goes about as well as you’d expect, but don’t take my word for it: give it a watch below and see for yourself!

As for what will happen to the videos on Sonic Paradox’s backup YouTube channel, widescreen HD remasters of the original Sonic Shorts Volumes (plus the Knuckles Briefs!), they will be reuploaded onto their reclaimed channel in due time. The backup account, in the future, will instead cater more to livestreaming.

Be sure to subscribe to the returned Sonic Paradox YouTube channel for hilarious Sonic shorts and more in the future!

Iizuka and Rafei Discuss History and Future of Sonic

PlayingVideoGamesJPG.0

Polygon has published a lengthy new article detailing the history and future of the Sonic brand, and it contains several key contributions from big names such as Yuji Uekawa, Christian Whitehead, Al Nilsen and Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team. It also comes with some very… peculiar looking art to accompany it.

Sega: Sonic Runners is a Failure

Now depending where you sit when it comes to this kind of game, this news will actually not surprise you, or it may take you completely by surprise. Sega considers Sonic Runners a failure, in terms of how much money it’s making. This comes as a bit of a surprise as the game appeared to be profitable and doing rather well.

runnersfailure

Now, in the past, I have been quite vocal regarding my stance on a certain ‘free’ to play mobile game staring Sonic, however, one thing which was hard to deny, is that Sonic Runners was being downloaded, it was being played and people were spending a lot of money on it.

Though at the same time, I’m not that surprised, the game has been heavily criticised for poor technical performance, an intrusive and invasive micro-transaction strategy and in some cases, randomly banning players for utterly no reason. Why would people want to give money to this?

However, another issue which is a little strange is that, according to the report, Sonic Runners on average was making 30 million yen per month, which is around £180,000, that sum is considered a failure? How much money went into developing the game for that sum to be considered a failure?

To put it into perspective, Sega considers games which make 50 million yen, or £300,000 per month to be successful.

Nuremberg Toy Fair Reveals New 25th Anniversary Details!

25th_plushes

Toy Fair season is still in full swing, with London done with, the party rolled into Nuremberg and with it came a lot of new toys and some very interesting 25th anniversary details thanks to our friends over at Spindash.de.

Let’s just go over what we know first, we know that Tomy are making a range of classic toys for Sonic’s 25th, we have seen the scans from their catalogues and we have actually seen the physical prototypes in the flesh.

However, Nuremberg provided one very surprising detail, that being Boom Sonic appears to be included in the 25th celebrations!

tomy25th_figuresThis photo shows the already known classic range and a Sonic Boom figure with an alternative 25th anniversary logo. Now stop right there, think about this for a moment.

This doesn’t automatically confirm Boom Sonic in the 25th celebrations, this is a prototype box, in the past Tomy has used other figures to represent designs which have yet to be finalised, this might not be a Boom Sonic figure, but a Modern Sonic instead, a line which Tomy has not touched for years.

There is strong evidence for this included in this article, look at the picture at the top of the article, see the classic designed plushies? The Sonic one at the moment has a temporary Sonic Boom tag, not the final one.

But one thing is very clear from this, we now know why there are so many logos, they seem to be used to represent different eras, so it’s likely the classic inspired one which we have seen so often is for the classic era, this one is likely to be used for either Boom or Modern Sonic.

The other very interesting detail which seems to be a reoccurring trend is the use of pixel imagery for the 25th.

Take a look at this photo of the large Classic Sonic Plush.

25th_plush1

Now look back at the figures posted earlier, now compare it to this image.

25thanversaryadvert1

Notice the use of pixels in both imagery, even in the recent tease posted on various Sonic social media outlets pixels are used again, and this follows on from one person at Sega dropping the line ‘pixel Sonic’

Now I can only speculate here, but if you cast your minds back to when Generations was announced, the original trailer included a lot of ‘white space’ in it, we then found out that was a key element of the game, is what we’re seeing here an indication of what might be found in the next major Sonic title?

Another new surprise was this 25th anniversary Comic Boom pack.

25thcomicbookpack

As mentioned in our original report on Toy Fair, the show also included some classic Sonic figures which we were very impressed with.

25th_classic

We really hope that the quality of those isn’t lost when they go into mass production since its very high.

Also included in the fair were a number of new Boom toys, we reported on them in our London Toy Fair report, however we can now show you more detailed photographs.

metalsonicplush

First up is a Metal Sonic plush, we really liked this one when we saw it, can’t wait until this gets released.

bigheaadplush

But the biggest surprise for us were these big head plushies, Orbot & Cubot especially, but the Metal Sonic one were by far the runaway stars with us, we’ll be getting these day one for sure.

And one final surprise, we think that this might be the first time that the new F4F Tornado statue has been shown in the flesh.

More Sonic Boom: RoL Concept Art Discovered

Jason Norton Sonic Boom 18

The Sonic Stadium has discovered even more concept art from Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and a few pieces from Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. The images were among the portfolios of artists Oscar Ponce and Jason Norton who used to work at Big Red Button Entertainment. The latter’s artwork is especially intriguing as it reveals scrapped ideas for Eggman’s mech, a ‘battle mode tank’ and what we can assume is a golem boss battle. Check out all fifty seven of the images in our gallery below and give us your thoughts in the comments.

Update: Ken Pontac To Write the Next Sonic Game?

ken pontac sonic game

Update: According to a post on the Sega forums by Ruby Eclipse, it is Sonic Boom Fire & Ice.

Original Story: According to the website for the AOD convention, Ken Pontac is going to be attending, and there is a rather curious section towards the end of his description.

His many admirers in the world of Sonic fandom will be ecstatic to learn that he’s written for an upcoming video game featuring their favourite blue hedgehog.

As some have pointed out, this could mean Sonic Boom Fire & Ice, however it’s rather odd they didn’t just name that or pick one of his previous works if it wasn’t a new or unknown title.

Thanks to Detective Paradox who brought this to our attention.

GE Entertainment Releases Modern Amy Plush

amyplush

GE Entertainment continues to make our wallets hurt, this time it’s Amy’s turn to get released.

No pricing details provided, because you can’t buy direct from them, have to rely on suppliers. Also oddly, no size measurements were provided this time. Not the first time Amy has had a modern plush, but this is certainly the most happy she’s looked.

As always, only Ebay & Amazon sellers will stock these.
