SEGA Japan Releases Sonic Generations Intro Details & Cutscene Images

SEGA Japan has given a big update to their Sonic Generations website and among the additions are 15 new images from the game’s story introduction scene. The game opens with a picnic Sonic’s friends are holding for his Birthday, before new enemy creature Time Eater comes along and sucks up Sonic and his friends into warp holes spread out across Sonic’s 20 year history.

Details of the story introductions from the HD version and the 3DS version have also been revealed and we have English translations of those courtesy of San.ake from Sonic Retro.

Sonic Generations 3DS US Release Date Revealed, EU Date Re-affirmed

SEGA Europe and SEGA of America have finally announced release dates for the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations. The portable edition of the game will hit Europe November 25th as previously revealed by SEGA Germany, while the US gets it three days earlier on November 22nd. A date for Australia is yet to be revealed.

SEGA France to Demonstrate ‘New’ Sonic Generations Stage at Paris Games Week

SEGA France has unveiled all of their Paris Games Week offerings via The Blue Room (their blog). Attendees will be able to go hands-on with the PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS versions of Sonic Generations, both Wii and Nintendo 3DS versions of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the upcoming digital download port of Sonic CD and Virtua Tennis 4 for PlayStation Vita.

The creator of the Yakuza and Super Monkey Ball franchises Toshihiro Nagoshi will also be there to give the first public presentation outside of Japan for his latest game Binary Domain and Sonic fans will get their first public demonstration of a new stage from Sonic Generations by Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka. As we’ve seen all of the game’s stages in trailers, this stage won’t be completely “new”, but there are still four stages we’ve not seen very much of, like Speed Highway, Crisis City, Rooftop Run and Planet Wisp, so it will likely be one of those stages.

Sonic Generations Goes Portable November 25th in Europe

GoNintendo reports that SEGA Germany has announced the European release date for the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations via a press release. The portable edition of the game will hit shelves in Europe November 25th, just 21 days after the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC Download versions are released.

We’ll let you know when we hear word of the US and Australia release dates.

NintendoWorldReport Previews Sonic Generations 3DS, 9 Mins of Gameplay

NintendoWorldReport has posted their impressions of the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations online after some hands-on time with many of the stages in the game, including the Emerald Coast and Radical Highway levels. The website says both of these Dreamcast era stages translate from the TV screen to the smaller 3DS screen very well, and overall, they seem pretty positive about the game, though they don’t think it will top Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

NWR has also shared nearly 9 minutes of gameplay footage from the New York Comic Con demo, which we have embedded here.

SEGA Releases 16 New Sonic Generations 3DS Screenshots

SEGA has released 16 new screenshots for the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations via the game’s product page on their website. The images showcase a variety of the game’s stages we’ve seen so far, including Emerald Coast, Mushroom Hill Zone, Casino Night Zone and Radical Highway, all in both Classic and Modern Sonic flavours.

ESRB Rates Sonic Generations 3DS, Boss Hint and Online User-Generated Content?

The ESRB has rated the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations and has given a possible hint as to what one of the game’s currently unknown bosses may be. When referring to bosses in its rating description, the US ratings board gives an example that sounds like the Death Egg Zone boss from Mega Drive title Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a boss that is also present in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. This could also be the already revealed Big Arm boss from Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Launch Base Zone, though. The game description also hints at user-generated content among the game’s online features

Sonic Generations Preview Round-up, More Info & Gameplay Footage

It appears SEGA’s embargo that IGN mentioned before has now lifted, as gaming websites SPOnG, CVG, Videogamer.com and GamesRadar have all just unleashed new previews of a near-final build of Sonic Generations, which give us some new nuggets of information. CVG has also provided new gameplay footage of Classic Sonic’s Sky Sanctuary Zone stage.

SPOnG’s preview is written by this website’s very own Svend Joscelyne/Dreadknux and tells us more about the game’s missions. Two new Speed Highway screenshots are also included.

Inbetween these stages, you’ll get the opportunity to play optional missions. There are five missions for both Classic and Modern Sonic in each zone, and will mix up the core stage in some form. Other characters will take an active role in helping you out, but for now we only know of Tails’ involvement in these levels. A mission called ‘Way Past Fast’ sees you race against the Tornado plane, piloted by the two-tailed fox

Other missions include Doppelganger races, against another Sonic, and a mission called ‘Look Out Below’ which challenges you to complete a remixed Green Hill Zone stage with breakable platforms. In each of these, the main elements of the core stage remains the same, but enemy placements will change and you may even explore completely different looking areas than you would in the main level

In Videogamer.com’s preview, there is an example of what part Sonic’s friends play in gameplay:

You don’t actually play as, say, Knuckles, but in one mission you can take advantage of the red echidna’s fists, where a tap of the button sends him burrowing into the ground for rings. As well as this there are time attacks, high speed challenges and doppelgänger races, which has you racing against the ‘other’ Sonic. Considering modern Sonic has homing attacks and the such, the odds are always stacked against his older, squatter counterpart – which is half the fun.

GamesRadar gives a bit more information about the opening of the game’s story:

The game’s plot is told through deliciously self-referential cut-scenes. Sonic eats chilli dogs while holding Amy at arms length literally with his whole hand over her face as she runs on the spot trying to get to him. But just as it’s getting all cosy, a vortex opens up in the space/time continuum and all of Sonic’s buddies (which include some Chaotix members) get sucked into it. Some cynics would likely be happy to leave the game there, having solved the most irksome problem of the past 19 years, but they’d be missing out on some gorgeous gameplay, so let’s carry on.

GamesRadar also previews the 3DS version and praises the 3D effect:

The 3DS version of Sonic Generations is very different compared to the ‘big’ game, but at the same time very similar in that the more platform-centric Classic Sonic levels are countered by faster, more dazzling Modern Sonic levels. But they all look great in 3D. I played for a long while with the 3D slider up full and it didn’t feel strained on my eyes, which was good. It can look a little simplistic in the over-the-shoulder Modern sections, but that’s to keep the speed and fluidity up, which is obviously vitally important.

All four previews are extremely positive, which is very good to see this close to release when reviews will soon be due. Will Sonic Generations be critically acclaimed? We’ll have to wait and see…

Sonic Generations Launching on Nintendo 3DS November 25th in Europe?

Eurogamer Italy reports that SEGA has apparently confirmed a November 25th release for the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations in Europe, which is 21 days later than when the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions launch. The date matches the one European retailers have been listing for the past month or two, but SEGA still list nothing clearer than November 2011 on their website.

We’ve queried the report with SEGA, but have heard nothing back. We’ll let you know when we hear something more official, but right now, November 25th is looking pretty likely.

Sonic Generations’ Release Pushed Forward in Japan

It seems SEGA, like Sonic, is getting a little impatient to get the blue hedgehog’s new title Sonic Generations into stores, as Andriasang reports that the game will now launch in Japan December 1st, instead of the previously scheduled date December 8th. Great news for our fellow fans in Japan!

Sonic Generations: New Speed Highway Screens, Radical Highway Officially Revealed

SEGA Japan has updated their official Sonic Generations website and with it dished out some new screenshots of Speed Highway in the Xbox 360 and PS3 version, as well as officially unveiling Radical Highway from Sonic Adventure 2 for the Nintendo 3DS version. Speed Highway in particular has seen a big transformation and is filled with more little references for you to spot.

Sonic Generations Playable at New York Comic Con

SEGA has revealed via their Twitter feed that Sonic Generations will be playable at this year’s New York Comic Con, which is set to take place from October 13th-16th at the Javits Center. SEGA says attendees will find the game located at the Archie Comics booth, but it’s currently unclear which versions of the game will be there and what stages will be playable. We’d expect at least the console version to be there with Green Hill Zone and City Escape playable like at other recent events.

Sonic Generations to be Showcased at Micromania Games Tour

French SEGA fansite SEGA Mag reports that Sonic Generations will be one of the games showcased in next week’s Micromania Games Tour. The tour is run by retailer Micromania and will be held in four cinemas across France. The event operates like an E3 presentation for the public, with about three hours worth of game demonstrations and videos showcased on the big cinema screen.

Other games being shown include Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Forza Motorsport 4, Battlefield 3, Need For Speed The Run, Mass Effect 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Saints Row: The Third, Batman Arkham City, RAGE, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, NBA 2K12, Dance Star Party and Dance Central 2.

Sonic Generations Gameplay Footage and Impressions From GAMEfest 2011

Video game retailer GAME held the first UK edition of their GAMEfest event last weekend and SEGA was in attendance with all 3 versions of Sonic Generations and both versions of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Community members TrueBlue471 and Hogfather attended and have shared footage and impressions of the games, which we have for you below.

Sonic Generations (3DS)

We’ve all seen the early screenshots, we’ve all seen the early shaky cam footage of it in action and it didn’t impress at all. Unfortunately it still has a lot to prove.

Whilst visually the game has improved tremendously from the original build we saw, praise must go to Dimps for actually doing something that so many people have asked for a great many years… Re-create the classic stages exactly as before only with updated visuals.

Playing through Mushroom Hill zone you can’t help but at least admire Dimps for the effort that’s been put in to making the game look true to the original stages.

But… whilst the stages look nice, the build I played did have its fair share of problems, try doing a spin dash with the analogue stick thing on the 3DS, it can’t be done, you must use the d-pad to play. The build also had a few issues with actually rendering the level, at times during Mushroom Hill Act 1 the paths didn’t appear to load/render when you were moving through the level at speed.

With regards to the 3D effect. It’s dreadful, just turn it off. It looks terrible in every stage I played and offers utterly nothing to the game.

However, if you care about these kind of things, you will be happy to know that the game plays more like the classics and less like Sonic 4… … .. So if you don’t want to learn how to play a new game or want to moan about little things, this one’s for you!

Sonic Generations (PS3/Xbox 360)

I played on both the PS3/Xbox 360 version for both stages of Green hill and… City Escape.

The build I played of the Green Hill is a lot different to that of the demo we had on XBLA and the PSN. One tiny change which might make some people happy is that the issue of where sonic hit an enemy in relation to how high he bounces appears to have been fixed. Controls seem to be much more responsive, even when boosting as modern Sonic, you can make small precise movements when heading down a straight.

Whilst Green Hill Zone is a relatively easy stage to beat, mastering it is going to take some time. However due to the number of times you run into Omachoa who gives you… advice, one could claim that Green Hill is designed to be a tutorial kind of stage, it’s easy yes, there’s lots of advice given, but at no point do you think ‘this is a tutorial’ and to master the stage, it’s going to take a number of playthroughs.

City Escape.

For those who said ‘this looks easy’ or… you can just boost through it… I point at you and laugh, you are in for a shock! City Escape is a tricky stage which COMMANDS great platforming skill, you CANNOT boost through it as modern or classic sonic, there are open areas for modern sonic which means boosting is impossible, well it’s not impossible… you will boost, for 3 seconds, after which you crash into a wall.

As both classic and modern Sonic, relying on boosting or spin dashing through this stage will result in you completing the stage in a very long time, mastering this stage will not be an easy task, you have to time your jumps just right and be at a good enough speed to actually make them when they do.

The Gun Truck sequence… to quote Robin Williams from the movie Jumanji…

“A hunter from the darkest wild, makes you feel just like a child.”
“What is it?”
“The Gun Truck!”

Ok maybe a bit too dramatic, but there’s just something about this sequence that gets the blood pumping, maybe it’s that the Gun Truck destroys homes to get you, it follows you relentlessly throughout the stage, if you have a 3D TV it even comes out at the screen to get you the player. Maybe I quoted the wrong movie; Terminator has a more appropriate line. “It can’t be reasoned with, it can’t be bargained with! It doesn’t feel pity! Or remorse! Or fear! And it absolutely will not stop EVER! Until you are dead!”

Whilst the Gun Truck sequence is a relief from a demand of platforming, don’t let the trailers or the this sequence fool you. City escape is a tricky stage, it DEMANDS precision platforming and it’s a VERY impressive stage at that.

I played both the Xbox 360/PS3 versions of Generations, whilst I didn’t have any problems with lag input on the PSN demo I played back in the summer, if there was any truth to this claim back in the summer, it certainly doesn’t exist now, both versions play equally and look equally stunning. Maybe if you care enough to test them in near laboratory conditions you might find a difference, otherwise it’s only going to be something that 3 people might argue about enough to convince themselves that everybody else secretly does care… yet we’re too busy playing a very well made game.

I only played the canoe game, and surprisingly… this was a lot of fun, the controls did indeed match up with a canoe motion, the game was responsive and I actually felt like I was playing it and making my characters move as they should. As with previous Mario & Sonic games the key was finding a rhythm and maintaining that only to go crazy near the end of the race.

As strange as it sounds for me to say, the game was actually enjoyable, but then again, maybe it’s because I was sat in a canoe whilst playing the game instead of sitting in my room with a flicker light?

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS)

The 3DS version is… a little disappointing, there were a series of minigames to play ranging from Judo to the ‘walking race.’ Judo was amazingly poor, it’s basically a QTE minigame, whilst I don’t mind QTE’s this one is let down by the design of the 3DS itself, holding the D-pad button and one of the normal buttons is not the easiest thing to do in the speed that the game demands, as crazy as that sounds. But it does look quite cool when the game borrows Marvel Vs Capcoms hyper combo screens as Mario or Luigi did a leg sweep… and another… and another… and another… I guess nobody told the devs that in Judo you can do more moves than leg Sweep?

Maybe they designed this section after watching the Karate Kid?

The walking race, just a case of sliding the stylus from left to right in a set speed for the entire minigame… … boring.

The 3D effect… as with Generations 3DS, terrible and pointless. Turn it off.

Sonic Generations 3DS: New Green Hill Zone Screenshots

SEGA has released 23 new screenshots of Green Hill Zone from the 3DS version of Sonic Generations.
In this latest batch we can see that a lot of visual improvements have been made to to the level. We also get our first look at the level select menu in this version of the game.

Sonic Generations 3DS: New Preview Confirms Multiplayer Exclusive Levels, Emerald Coast & Shadow

A new Tokyo Game Show 2011 preview of the 3DS version of Sonic Generations from Capsule Computers has confirmed that the above screenshot released last month is from Emerald Coast. Shadow the Hedgehog is confirmed to be a rival in the 3DS version, too. Their preview also reveals that the game’s multiplayer mode will feature exclusive environments, though they didn’t give any examples.

After playing the demo, Sega let me have a second hands on play of a level Emerald Coast as it’ll be in the finished game. In each level you can play as either ‘new’ or ‘old’ bringing two very distinct feels to the same level. As some may know, Emerald Coast is a level from the Dreamcast version of Sonic, Sonic Adventure, which has now been redesigned into a 2D platform based level. After playing through the game twice, It’s apparent that there is an emphasis on the game as a platformer, rather than just a speed based game where you race through. A few other features included in the game will be the use of Shadow as a rival, and exclusive environments for two player verses mode. Sonic Generations will be released for the 3DS, PS3 and Xbox360

M&S London 3DS Gameplay Footage, English Website Updated

We’ve got two pieces of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games news this evening. First, we’ve got some new gameplay footage and screenshots of the Nintendo 3DS version from Nintendo’s 3DS Conference, which was held early this morning.

And second, we’ve just got word that SEGA has given the EU and US website for the game a huge update. There’s not much new in terms of screenshots and videos, but you can check out some profiles and new artwork of the characters in the game, as well as their stats for the Wii version of the game.

SEGA Japan Updates Sonic Generations Website, New Screenshots

SEGA Japan has given a major update to their Sonic Generations website, and while there’s no new media for the console version outside of a single Rooftop Run screenshot, there are plenty of new screenshots for the portable Nintendo 3DS version.

New Screenshots of Sonic Generations 3DS’ Casino Night Zone

SSMB member Woun has scanned up two new screenshots from the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations from the recently released Japanese manga based on the game. Classic Sonic’s stage is of course based on the original level from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, while Modern Sonic’s stage contains new features like a roulette wheel.

Next Nintendo TV News Episode to Feature Exclusive Sonic Generations Preview

At the end of today’s episode of Nintendo TV News on the UK Wii Nintendo Channel, Official Nintendo Magazine informed they will have an exclusive preview of the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations in their next episode, which will be made available September 23rd. ONM hasn’t give any clues about what to expect, but given the format of the show, we should hopefully see new video footage and/or an interview with SEGA.

New Sonic Generations 3DS Screenshots and Details

Nintendo UK has put up a product page for the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, which contains 3 new screenshots of the game’s Casino Night Zone and Mushroom Hill Zone stages. The page also reveals that the game will support the Play Coins feature of the 3DS to unlock ‘new challenges, and says that using the 3DS’ StreetPass feature will allow you to receive new unlockable content including new missions when you interact with other players. The game’s Versus Mode is said to feature a status points system, which sounds similar to the one used in Sonic Rush Adventure and the DS version of Sonic Colours.

It also appears the game will have some form of replay value involving other characters. According to the game’s description, players will rescue Sonic’s friends in each level. You’ll then be able to “see the levels in a different light”, with the friends then able to join him when replaying a level.

Takashi Iizuka Talks About The Past and Future of Sonic

In an interview posted today at Pocket Gamer, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has explained why he thinks Sonic games haven’t fared too well with critics over the last several years. Iizuka says that over time Sonic’s various titles have been shared out across different teams, where each one has their own ideas of what makes a Sonic game. This is now changing, as Iizuka is taking full responsibility and control over all Sonic games going forward and hopes this will improve things.

So originally it was more or less the same team working on all the different Sonic titles, but after a few years, for various reasons, we started to delegate Sonic games to different groups of people.

And everyone in the office has their own idea of what Sonic should be, so we started to see slightly varied, slightly different directions of Sonic games.

I was conscious of this, so I’m now back with full responsibility of all things Sonic. I have control over the direction of not just Sonic Generations, but all the Sonic titles that we will develop in the future.

So I have more control, and hopefully this will provide better appearances for future titles.

When asked about what’s next for Sonic, Iizuka says we can expect more Sonic titles after Sonic Generations. As well as Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 in the digital download space, there is going to be “a whole new adventure, of course.”

Sonic Generations sort of acts as the end of one period. After Sonic Generations, we will work on new Sonic titles. There’s going to be a whole new adventure, of course.

For the digital and mobile space, we have Sonic 4 – Episode 1 is already out, and we’ve already started creating Episode 2.

We’re going to continue to explore the reimaginationing of classic Sonic, but at the same time we will also keep looking into the gaming space around modern Sonic games.

Online Multiplayer Confirmed For Sonic Generations 3DS

We’ve known for a long time that the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations will feature a multiplayer mode for 2 players, but SEGA has never gone into any detail about it. Now, thanks to information on SEGA’s new Tokyo Game Show 2011 website, we know that the mode will also have online functionality for 2 players.

Other than that little nugget, there are no other new details. SEGA will be taking the 3DS and PS3 versions of Sonic Generations to the Tokyo Game Show in a couple of weeks time, so hopefully more details and media will be revealed then.

Mushroom Hill Zone Revealed For Sonic Generations 3DS

Courtesy of SEGA, we have 11 new screenshots of the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, which unveil the Sonic & Knuckles classic stage Mushroom Hill Zone for this edition of the game. Classic Sonic roams through the Spring time Act 1 as you remember it, while Modern Sonic dashes through the Fall time Act 2 with an added 3D rail grind section.

SEGA Product Page Update Reveals Story Mode For M&S London 3DS

SEGA has updated their Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games product page with some new information about the game. Most of it we already know on both platforms, but there’s an interesting new detail at the very bottom that reveals a new Story Mode for the Nintendo 3DS version of the game. Like in the Adventure Mode for the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, the game’s cast of characters will face off against Dr.Eggman and Bowser. Unfortunately, no other information about this mode is currently available.

Sonic Generations: Chemical Plant Zone Officially Revealed For Xbox 360/PS3, Tails Art, 3DS Boxart

SEGA’s officially unveiled the Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Classic Metal Sonic Rival Battle at Stardust Speedway from Sonic CD for the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations. This level and battle were revealed with a batch of new screenshots SEGA dished out today, as well as artwork for Classic Tails and Modern Tails and the boxart for the Nintendo 3DS version of the game. SEGA Officially Reveals More Sonic Generations Details

SEGA has updated their Sonic Generations product page and added some more details, most notably in the ‘Key Features’ sections for both the PS3 & Xbox 360 versions and the Nintendo 3DS version. Those who have been tracking all of the information leaked from the PS3 and Xbox 360 demo in various forums will find the details for that version very familiar, but for those who haven’t, the page reveals that throughout the story players will free Sonic’s friends, fight some of his rivals and revisit big boss battles. After saving each of Sonic’s friends, you’ll then be able to have them join you in some of the game’s other missions.

For the Nintendo 3DS version, SEGA’s website reveals both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic will each have a track in the game’s unlockable special stages and 2 player versus mode is said to feature ‘status points’ you earn through playing with your friends. The game’s Street Pass feature gives you the ability to collect new content and unlock bonus material, which SEGA says increases “variety, interaction and replayability”.

Latest SEGA Europe Release Schedule Lists Sonic Generations For PC, 3DS Version Delayed?

The evidence for a PC version of Sonic Generations is really mounting up. SEGA Europe has issued a schedule for their upcoming game releases through 2011 and into 2012. Sonic Generations is down for the already known release month of November for PS3, Xbox 360 and…PC? It appears SEGA may have let the cat out of the bag again for the PC version of the game, surprising no one. What IS surprising though is the absence of the Nintendo 3DS version. SEGA Europe’s website also has no month scheduled for the portable version and instead lists it for a Late 2011 release, even though it was previously given a November release month. Could the 3DS version of Sonic Generations be getting released slightly later than the home console (and possible PC) versions?

E3 2011: New Trailer Reveals 2 New Levels For Sonic Generations

SEGA has opened their E3 booth and kicked things off with a new trailer for Sonic Generations. The video reveals Sonic Adventure 2’s City Escape as a level in the game and teases another at the end, but we’ll leave you guys to discover and guess what that one is for yourselves. Lots of gameplay footage can be seen of both Classic and Modern Sonic dashing through City Escape, along with more beautiful CGI goodness. SEGA’s also unveiled the box art for the game, and it looks like the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will be playable in 3D.

Sonic Generations Officially Announced for 3DS, Coming November 2011

SEGA has just officially announced the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, which was previously unveiled by Nintendo Power. Along with the announcement of this portable edition of the game, SEGA also announced a rough November release date for the 3DS version and the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (June 1st, 2011) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. & SEGA® America, Inc., today confirmed Sonic Generations™ will be released on Nintendo’s new handheld system, Nintendo 3DS™ in November 2011. Set across three defining eras from Sonic the Hedgehog’s twenty year history, Sonic Generations™ for Nintendo 3DS will see SEGA’s mascot speeding through new stereoscopic 3D levels designed exclusively for the handheld console.

“Sonic Generations for Nintendo 3DS will combine brand new technology and twenty years of Sonic the Hedgehog videogame heritage” commented David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “Couple this with the ability to play as both Classic and Modern Sonic and you have the perfect gaming celebration for the landmark anniversary of our much loved mascot”

The specifically designed Nintendo 3DS environments, based on iconic levels from popular Sonic the Hedgehog titles, will include an exclusive unlockable ‘Special Stage’ allowing players to become even more immersed in Sonic’s world. Sonic Generations for Nintendo 3DS will also take advantage of the StreetPass™ feature by enabling players to collect new content and unlock bonus material each time they pass another player. In addition to this, the new two-player versus mode means fans can battle it out across some of the most recognisable Sonic environments in a completely new way.

Sonic Generations for Nintendo 3DS follows the same storyline as the previously announced platforms, with Sonic and his friends pulled back through time due to a mysterious new power which is causing chaos throughout the universe by creating strange “time holes”. Sonic Generations will be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Nintendo 3DS system in November 2011.

Nintendo Power Sonic Generations 3DS Details

As revealed yesterday, copies of the new issue of Nintendo Power have been delivered to subscribers, which unveil a Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic’s big 20th Anniversary game Sonic Generations. Details from the issue have been shared by Sonic Retro forum member Effexor, and it appears this version of the game will be very unique and not just a port.

Here’s all of the main details:
* The Nintendo 3DS version is being co-developed by Sonic Team and Dimps.
* The director of the 3DS version is Tetsu Katano, who directed Sonic and the Black Knight.
* 2D side-scrolling gameplay for both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic.
* Momentum based gameplay and platforming are fully featured in the Classic Sonic gameplay.
* Modern Sonic plays a lot like the Sonic Rush games and Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colours.
* Nintendo 3DS version will have exclusive stages and boss stages.
* Green Hill Zone will be the only shared stage in both the HD console version and Nintendo 3DS version.
* Casino Night Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is confirmed for the Nintendo 3DS version.
* Story has some differences between the console and Nintendo 3DS versions, but will be fundamentally the same.
* Console version will have many characters, but the Nintendo 3DS version will only feature the ones who are integral to the story.
* There is no Wii version. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says this is because “The primary goal for the console versions of Generations was reimagining the series’s classic zones in vivid, high-definition graphics.”
* Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Launch Base Zone ‘Big Arm’ boss fight is in the game, which suggests that stage is also in the game.
* Classic Eggman appears in the above mentioned boss.
* Exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version are challenges that you can unlock via StreetPass or Play Coins.
* The game also features an exclusive two-player race mode via local wireless connection.
* Modern Sonic stages take advantage of the 3D feature more than the Classic Sonic stages. An example shown and detailed is a part in the Green Hill Zone where Modern Sonic smashes through the bottom of a giant totem pole. The camera then moves to the front of Sonic and lets you see the rest of the pole collapse behind Sonic as he escapes.
* The 3D depth is also highlighted when Modern Sonic occasionally moves between the foreground and the background.
* Jun Senoue and his music team are working on the music for the game.
* Nintendo Power thinks the handful of tracks they’ve heard so far are “fantastic”.
* Special Stages are confirmed and are designed in Sonic Heroes style. As expected, you earn Chaos Emeralds from these stages. Whether or not Super Sonic will be your reward for earning all Chaos Emeralds is unclear right now.

Nintendo Power Confirms Sonic Generations For Nintendo 3DS

The above alleged front cover of Nintendo Power’s upcoming issue has hit the net, which if real confirms past retailer and SEGA earnings report listings for Sonic Generations on Nintendo 3DS. At the moment though there are no scans of the article, just the magazine cover, and while we can’t post article scans here, if we see anything more we’ll update with all of the details.
