It’s a reality! Look at the gameplay footage!!! All around the community people have been talking about the concept of a Sonic multiplayer online role playing game. Well did you know one has been online on since november 2008?!?
With 400 registered players, and a fairly active server during the evening (in the uk time zone) it would appear they are doing something right.
With a world that goes from day to night, quests, pvp, fishing, and capture the flag (wtf?!?!) it would appear it’s something worth looking into. Especially since it’s free to play (what fan game isnt though lol).

SEGA have confirmed via their Twitter feed that Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games will be appearing at E3, no version(s) was mentioned but I think we can assume that both versions will be present.

Nintendo Power has recently released a Poster Book in the US and Canada containing 4 posters featuring Sonic the Hedgehog. The posters which can be seen below come from a number of previously released Sonic games for Nintendo consoles such as Sonic Chronicles, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic & The Black Knight and the yet to be released Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter games. The book can be found in all good news stands costing $9.99 in the US and $12.99 in Canada.

Those rumblings of more downloadable content has appeared to pan out. SEGA has today released three new levels and three new missions for Mazuri on Xbox Live. Like past DLC packs, this pack costs 250 points. You can get a look at what the content looks like below, in video provided by the Youtube user 1stkirbyever. Sonic Universe’s Shadow Saga continues with Part 3, “Old Soldiers”. After last months disappointing Sonic Adventure 2 adaption, Sonic Universe #3 looks to get back to the here and now with the introduction of Omega and the resolution of Gamma’s long hanging plot thread. Will Shadow be able to save Gamma from Robotnik’s wrath, or will both robots share Metal Sonic’s fate? Find out in this comic! Below are the sample scans and official solicitation:

From what I can gather, the opinion regarding last month’s Sonic Universe #2 is near unanimous: the story was not very good. It’s pacing was a mess, and it didn’t have a very coherent narrative. Sonic Universe #3, going by these pages, appears to be a lot better. I personally look forward to reading the story later today. I will update this news post with my thoughts later.

Old technology becomes new as ‘lock-on technology’ has been reported to feature on the Xbox Live Arcade version of Sonic & Knuckles, according to Netherlands Sega Online Website which holds pictures of the feature in action. This would allow you to couple Sonic & Knuckles with any of the previous Sonic XBLA titles to unlock their ‘& Knuckles’ feature. The lock-on feature was missing from the recently released Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection.
Sega developed lock-on technology for the original Mega Drive/Genesis cartridge as a way to basically split the game in half to release two Sonic games in 1994. Combining Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 3 created ‘Sonic 3 & Knuckles’, basically the complete version of Sonic 3.
Sega were also able to make Sonic & Knuckles work retroactively with Sonic 2 placing Knuckles as the sole playable character, something that was never though of on Sonic 2’s release in 1992. Finally coupling Sonic & Knuckles with the original Sonic game gave you access to a vast number of ‘Collect The Blue Spheres’ special zone

The Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed has received a new update for download on Xbox Live this morning in Europe, no news on wether other regions have received this but Xbox Live updates are usually worldwide so other regions will most likely have this too.
The update doesn’t seem to have changed anything about the game(Adabat’s frame-rate is still choppy) although after loading up your game save the cursor on the planet isn’t over the last area you visited like normal but instead the cursor is over an open ocean area. If it’s anything like the last update the game got over Xbox Live and Playstation Network, it will be to prepare the game for upcoming downloadable content and then any fixes to the game will take effect once you have the downloadable content.
We’ll bring you more news on this as it happens.
UPDATE:
Archangel UK over at the official Sonic City Blognik has confirmed that the Unleashed Xbox 360 patch put out today does indeed confirm our speculation that more downloadable content is coming and that current hidden areas in the game people in the research community have been digging into will be opening up.

Sonic Channel, the Japanese official Sonic website has updated today with the second of this years colouring pages with official artwork from Sonic Team. First we had Sonic in a cheery walking pose and now we have Shadow standing with his hand to his chest maybe taking an oath? If you like the look of these, or would like to see Sonic in a shade of green and Shadow in a shade of purple or just want to colour them in properly (you boring person) you can download them from Sonic Channel here.

A 6 year old Norwegian child by the name of Christer had his hopes crushed recently by the King of Norway who he wrote to asking for his name to be changed to ‘Sonic X’. The child, a fan of the Japanese Anime of the same name, wrote a letter to King Harold V but his parents thought common sense would prevail and were at first reluctant to post it.
Several months passed until Christer finally begged them to send it and amazingly once they did they received a reply. King Harold V wrote back stating that he couldn’t change the child’s name yet as he was under the age of 18 but that if he asked again some 12 years later he would happily change it then.
Christer, forlorn at the bad news and long wait ahead of him told Norwegian website dagbladet.no that the decision “was a bit bad.”
Alls well that ends well though as Sega have actually tried to make contact with Christer through the website in question to send him some Sonic X Goodies to cheer him up.

As we approach the home stretch on the road to 200, things are beginning to really heat up! The gauntlet’s been thrown, the pieces are in place, and everyone is now ready for the lead up to the next big confrontation between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik!
This issue is supposed to lead up to something that will drastically change the status quo, and the lives of Sonic and his friends and enemies in the process. Looking at #199, the stage is most definitely set for something like that. Below, as usual, I will post the five preview pages released by Archie, as well as the issue’s official solicitation, and of course, my review.
For those of you not willing to scroll through everything, this is an issue I highly recommend, as it more or less represents the reason why I read these comics in the first place, and why I think all of you other Sonic fans should too.

This issue was most definitely leagues above the somewhat anticlimatic “Egg Pheonix” story last issue. Featuring the usual amount of nice action scenes, this story also had some nice character to character moments. I won’t go into it, lest I spoil it for people who haven’t picked it up yet, but Ian’s writing is definitely at it’s best when he lets the characters be themselves and interact with each other on a more personal level, not just with their fists. The story touches on past plot points to help show just how important this battle is, and ties this issue in with continuity that is over twelve years old quite nicely.
The art is fantastic, something that has thankfully become the norm ever since Tracy took over and Ron Lim quietly left the book. Tracy’s cartoon style really matches the atmosphere of the book, and Sonic himself. Matt Herm’s coloring is also a nice step above Jensen’s style, which has always been too bright for my taste. I am hoping he will soon become the regular colorist on the book.
Of course, the issue does have it’s share of problems. I would say it’s biggest problem does not lie in the issue itself, but rather it’s build up. Despite the battles in New Megapolis in during the New Moebius arc, this whole “end of the Eggman Empire” plot point still feels rather sudden. Considering this war has been going on since the book’s conception, it seems to me that we needed to have many more issues before it focused squarely on building up to this monumental battle. I enjoyed the Bold New Mobius saga far more then any other storyline Archie’s ever made in the Sonic book, but I think it may have been best to delay or shorten the storyline so that more issues could have focused on building up to this fight. Without a focused build up, this story doesn’t feel nearly as epic as it really should.
Hopefully, with Sonic Universe now allowing Ian to write two issues a month instead of one, Ian can make a more concerted effort to ensure future storylines like this have the right amount of build up, without leaving other plot points and characters hanging for years on end, as he probably should have with Scourge and the Anti-Mobius reinvention.
I highly recommend this issue to Arche fans and Sonic fans alike. This issue isn’t necessarily the best jumping on point for new readers, but with stuff like the pending epic battle between Sonic and Robotnik, a fight between Shadow, E-102 Gamma, and Omega, as well as the formation of team dark and a huge change in the status quo all coming in the next few issues of StH and SU, I can’t imagine a more exciting time to start reading it. The comics themselves contain loads of fan service to Sonic fans, and perfectly show Sonic’s attitude in a way I haven’t seen since the sprite animations in the classic games. Couple that with excellent art and entertaining writing, and I don’t think any Sonic fan has a legitimate reason to not give this comic a chance right now. This comic isn’t about love affairs, teen soap operas, and family drama anymore. This comic is about Sonic.

Details of Achievements for the Xbox Live Arcade version for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 have been released today along with a number of other classic Sega games. All of the games have been found most recently found on the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection but will be available individually should you not want to pick up a collection with 50+ mostly great other games.

It seem’s Toys R Us can’t get enough of our favourite video game franchise, after the exclusive Sonic Unleashed posable Werehog action figure’s you can now pre-order two new figures exclusively at their stores/website.
The two figures available are Sonic Super
Posers – Super Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic Super Posers – Super Shadow The Hedgehog. Bet you can’t say either of those fast without stopping for breath. Both are extremely posable with (as the packaging puts it) “Over 25 points of articulation”, great for those battles with your sisters Barbie dolls. Each figure costs $10.99 and their estimated ship date is 05/10/2009(that’s 10th May 2009 for us Brit’s).

We have just received news that U.S. PS3 owners of Sonic Unleashed have finally received the Chun-nan and Spagonia downloadable content packs in the Playstation Store. Xbox 360 owners in the U.S. have been enjoying these stages for 7 weeks now, even European PS3 owners of the game got the Chun-nan pack a week or two ago.
The Chun-nan Adventure Pack costs $2.99 and it’s file size weighs in at 367 MB and the Spagonia Adventure Pack also cost’s $2.99 with the file size almost double that of the Chun-nan pack at 707 MB.
The Spagonia pack has yet to be released on the European Playstation Store but we’ll update you as soon as it is.

How appropriate after the release of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis/Mega Drive Collection that a list appears on the “Best Launch Titles Of All Time.” The original Sonic the Hedgehog appeared at #3 in a countdown by Blend Games’ Rich Knight.
After pretty much losing the console wars in their first battle with Nintendo with the Sega Master System against the NES, Sega knew it needed a mascot to combat the mushroom munching, Italian plumber from Brooklyn. Enter Sonic the Hedgehog, a less family friendly, more speed addicted hero than Nintendo was offering with their kid tested, mother approved system. Whereas Nintendo made it cool to hang out with the folks and play games together, Sega went in the opposite direction, creating a mascot that would appeal to young teenage boys instead. Sega’s whole ATTITUDE was in fact different than Nintendo’s, right down to the sleek design of their all black console. Like its name would imply, the Sega Genesis WAS a brand new beginning for Sega, and Sonic the Hedgehog was their trendsetting hero. No doubt about it, Sonic the Hedgehog is quite possibly the only reason why Sega is still around in business today.
Sonic the Hedgehog finished behind Super Mario Bros. for the NES and Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, which are damn good comes to be behind. What are your top 5? Should Sonic Adventure, a game that clearly helped the Dreamcast gain mainstream popularity, be on it? Speak.

A new Puyo Puyo game. Sonic Team have updated their teaser web pages and revealed the secret of the mathematical apple-chucking trailer – it’s an excuse to bust some colourful Puyo in yet another edition of the addictive puzzler.
Puyo Puyo 7 is destined to hit the Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP later in the year, according to Famitsu magazine, with the DS version hitting retail first at the end of July in Japan. Just like the last major console release, Puyo Pop Fever, it’s possible we may see a Western release later, at a budget price.
Many had been suspecting the Project RINGO teaser was related to Puyo Puyo as flash banners had appeared prominently on Sonic Team’s website for the franchise. The curious nature of the countdown trailer led some to believe a new IP from the studio was to be announced, but now that’s clearly not the case.
Puyo Puyo has had various releases in the West under other names. 1990s gamers may remember the format in the form of Kirby’s Avalanche on the SNES and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine on the Sega Mega Drive. The franchise enjoys a fair amount of popularity in Japan.

UPDATE: In an update at the Sonic City Blognik ArchangelUK informs that the competition is now open to all countries.
SEGA Europe together with entertainment and media news website Digital Spy are offering you the chance to win one of only two copies made of the Japanese Sonic and the Black Knight script. Even better it’s signed by the game’s producer Tetsu Katano. ArchangelUK tells us in his latest Sonic City Blognik entry that he has the other one but with a bit of luck and by answering a simple competition question you could be the lucky owner of the second one. Three runners-up will get a Sonic and the Black Knight inflatable sword and a SEGA vinyl sticker. Entries are to be one per household and are to be in by Friday, April 10, 2009 at midday.

Legend20x brings animated life to Hunter Bridges amazing theme tune!The Sonic Show needed a new intro to go with the new format of the show. Season’s 2 intro was very good so we struggled to think how we could top it. It became quickly obvious that we would need some external help. After browsing the land of the internet we came across Legend20x. We hoped and wished that he would be interested in taking on this project and luckily he was equally excited about the idea!
But of course, if we have a new intro, we needed a new theme tune! The lovely Slingerlulz got us in contact with a talented artist known as Hunter Bridges. After discussing different ideas, he got straight to work and create this wonderful 30 second tune. Starting off in a sound that takes you back to the days of the genesis, this new theme tune quickly morphs into a modern upbeat ride that anyone who has played Sonic since Adventure will recognise.

A long-standing community tradition run by Sonic Fan Games HQ, the Sonic Amateur Games Expo is an online showcase of the dozens of Sonic fan projects in the works. This year’s event will be run by community oldbie, InstantSonic, along with KTZ. The show will be a week-long celebration from July 25th through the 31st. With the show a little over three months away, that gives prospective participators enough time to whip up a project and a booth (website).

So what? I hear you say… Well, if anyone remembers Tetsu Katano claimed Sonic and the Black Knight was developed for the younger gamers and until now all other media have given this game an 8/10 or below and now a kids magazine called Toxic comes along and gives the game a 9/10 and their ‘Star Game’ award.
The reviewers from this magazine may not be kids but its these people’s jobs to actually look at the game from a kids point of view which alot of reviewers especially from the big gaming sites have failed to do. Toxic’s reviewers have reviewed it from a kids eyes and gave it a top score, other sites have reviewed it from an hardcore Sonic fan’s point of view and constantly complained about the gimmicks, gameplay and how it’s not like traditional Sonic. This game has been designed to be different and easy to pick up and play for kids but most reviewers just haven’t understood that.
Toxic, we love you! Tetsu Katano and the rest of Sonic Team would be proud!

As for my opinion on the choices, horror could be the well along the lines of “Scooby Doo Meets Addams Family” from the old Scooby-Doo Movies or a playable version of a game with “Night of the Werehog” vibes. Film Noir would be all kinds of odd, in my opinion, as it’s not really a “setting,” but rather, a style of filmmaking that does not lend itself to action. Picturing Sonic and friends as the cast of The Big Sleep would certainly melt my brain. Western would be a fun setting to bounce about. Although, it probably comes with a six-shooter, so that choice is also a hesitant one. Sci-Fi and Greek Myths are fantasy settings, so like the two games that came before them, are more appropriate for the next Storybook game. That sutibleness is probably a good indication as to why they are the top two choices in the poll at this time. I can see it now: play Sonic as Gilgamesh and Shadow as Enkidu and try to take down the nasty Humbaba. The best part about the story of Gilgamesh is that Shadow, as Enkidu, dies. I’d pay to see that one.

Bentley Jones (aka Lee Brotherton) rocks ass. As we all know, this is official fact. He has spent more time in Sonic music than any sane person should and rocked the balls out at the Summer Of Sonic 2008 event. If you don’t know who he is, (fool) then think back to Sonic 06. Last week, Brad Flick (aka Slingerland or Slingerland’s Corner Fame) talked to Mike Pollock, the current voice of Dr. Eggman and they had a grand ol’ time. If you’ve got 21 minutes to spare, you can listen in as we discuss Mike’s work on Sonic Unleashed and other Sonic titles. In addition, Mike talks about how he got into voice acting and he reminisces on his early days in New York radio and his work on his only film, Little Tug’s Big Adventure. He also does some voices for us!
Mike is currently signed to do voice work on an upcoming, to be announced Wii title. He recently was the announcer for AC/DC’s Black Ice album and has acquired credits for his work on commercials, Ultimate Muscle, and Kirby! Right Back At Ya!. Fo more information on Mike Pollock, visit his website.

Earlier this week, the GoNintendo blog received a tip from one of its longtime readers, Pezmanmike, regarding the upcoming DS Virtual Console service coming to the Nintendo DSi. While it has been rumored that the first-party Game Boy catalogue would be apart of the DS Virtual Console service, the Game Gear catalogue is now in the mix as well.
The initial Game Boy rumor surfaced after a Club Nintendo event at this week’s Game Developer’s Conference. Pezmanmike backed the initial rumor that Nintendo mentioned bringing Game Boy games to a DS Virtual Console service, but also said that “SEGA was interested” in the service. “Nothing is set in stone, but [Nintendo] is looking into it,” Pezmanmike says.
Will classics like Sonic: Triple Trouble become portable once again? We shall find out. Until then, I’ll keep playing an emulated version on my Wii.

A second downloadable content pack for Sonic Unleashed titled Spagonia Adventure Pack is now available from Xbox Live Marketplace. 2 weeks ago we saw the first pack titled Chun-Nan Adventure Pack which contained extra stages for both Sonic and his Werehog form.
We are currently downloading this pack to investigate it’s contents and will update you soon. The description says four daytime stages and two night-time stages are available, three of them are all new and three are new missions. No word on if this is available on the Playstation Store which in the U.S. and Europe still hasn’t received the Chun-Nan pack.
UPDATE: I’ve had a quick play of the stages and here are my findings. Sonic: The first two are hard mode versions of Act’s 1 and 2 with the other two stages being completely new. One is a tricky platforming stage held in the skies of Spagonia and the other is a chase against some flying bots.
Werehog: The first is a hard mode version of Act 1 and the second is a completely new stage that see’s you travel round the canal’s of Spagonia.
Seem’s a pretty good pack that’s definitely worth the 250 MS Points.

The companies that brought you the incredible “Sonic the Hedgehog Chess” and squeezable Sonic figures, Jetix Consumer Products and Gaya Entertainment, have expanded their licensing agreement for more Sonic toys. CEO of Gaya Entertainment, Andre Schmitz, said:
“We are very proud to announce the teaming up of Jetix and Gaya Entertainment for this project. 2009 will be an important year for everybody´s favorite Hedgehog and being a part of it is highly appreciated. With our product line-up for Sonic, we intend to offer something for everyone, may it be old or young.”
Georg Liedmeier, licensing manager at Jetix Consumer Products also spoke:
“Jetix is looking forward to working with Gaya Entertainment and delivering quality products from one of its most cherished franchises to both fans of the series and model collectors alike.”
The company will be rolling out new collectibles by the end of May, but has yet to find a UK distributor. Three companies are in talks with Jetix and Gaya for UK distribution.

Good news everyone, ArchangelUK has let the community know in a new Sonic City Blognik entry that he has managed to track down Mega777!
For those who don’t know, a SatBK fan art contest winner by the name of Antonio Miniero entered into the contest a near exact copy of Mega777’s SA2 scene art piece despite the rules clearly stating that submissions had to be original artwork created by yourself. Antonio Miniero’s copy made it into the final shipped copies of Sonic and the Black Knight for Wii but Antonio was found out soon after the game’s release and was immediately disqualified, though he took it well and understood he had broken the rules.
Mega777 who’s real name is Francesca will now be sent a free copy of Sonic and the Black Knight together with a SEGA goody bag and some rare Sonic and the Secret Rings art prints signed by Ogawa-san from ArchangelUK’s own personal vault. Nice one AAUK 😉
ArchangelUK also informs us that Francesca(Mega777) has taken her talent to the world of work animating storyboards for TV shows and movies. How cool is that? Happy ending all round!

SEGA has ported its flagship Genesis title to everything that makes a mechanical whirring sound. The game is on cellular phones, home consoles on compilation discs and as a download, and it’s even on my grandfather’s pacemaker. It’s only appropriate that they port to one of the most popular pieces of technology available, Apple’s iPhone. I think the original Sonic has had more ports than any other game out there, so I bet SEGA will be finished porting it after releasing it for the iPhone. Right, Simon Jeffery?

Sony has announced that the second title in the PSP Sonic series Sonic Rivals will be one of a new group of games to enter their ‘Greatest Hits’ range in the U.S.
No this isn’t a brand of video game nostalgia music albums but a range of classic games released on Sony’s consoles. To enter the ‘Greatest Hits’ range a game has to have sold over 250,000 units and be out for 9 months. The game will now retail in the U.S. for $19.99 from April 5th.
The ‘Greatest Hits’ range is very similar to the ‘Platinum’ range Sony has over here in Europe where Sonic Rivals is already among titles in the range so should we expect to see Sonic Rivals 2 enter the ‘Platinum’ range soon? I’d say so, we shall let you know if it does. Until then you can pick the standard copy up pretty cheap in both the U.S. and Europe if you shop around. Go on, you know your PSP is begging for some Sonic.

Resident SSMB member ‘KIRBY‘ informed the forums earlier today with some exciting news regarding the release of Sonic Chronicles in Japan. Unlike Europe and America, Japan never saw a release of the game last September, a similar act as with Sonic Rivals 1 and 2’s Japanese no shows. While the majority of Japanese fans simply felt left in the dust, SEGA have finally uploaded a teaser site to the Internet advertising an eastern release for the Nintendo DS turn-based adventure.
Sonic Chronicles was met with mediocre reviews when released in Europe and America last year, with high criticism to the plot and sound track noted. The majority of fans however enjoyed the title, with Bioware’s extensive RPG experience clearly shining through. More information will be uploaded to the website April 10th, hopefully giving us a release date for Japanese fans to look forward to.

Like we’ve stated many times, we don’t like to talk about reviews. However, I have the utmost respect for GameTrailers and their reviews. I, personally, find them interesting, in-depth and having visual aid for any complaints that they air during the review is always nice. It’s hard to argue with GTs gripes with Sonic & the Black Knight, so here it is at TSS for your viewing pleasure.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back to my L.A. spring break adventure.

It’s been a good three or four months since the release of Sonic’s super fast/generic action’y title on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, Sonic Unleashed. SEGA have updated the Xbox Live Market Place today with some of the first Downloadable Content available for the game, a Chun-Nan ‘Adventure Pack.’
The adventure pack weighs in at around 530MB in size and contains four new day time stages (Act 1-2, 2-2, 4 and 5) and two new Werehog stages (Act 1-2 and 3.) While act 1-2 for both characters is simply a more difficult obstacle course of the standard Act 1 stages, Act 4 and 5 for Sonic and Act 3 for the Werehog offer entirely new areas of Chun-Nan for players to explore. Act 2-2 for Sonic simply adds an extra two ‘laps’ on to the already existing stage, though both of these are cleverly designed and a good challenge for even the greatest Unleashed enthusiasts.
Currently, the Xbox 360 DLC is avalible in Europe, Japan and America, while the PS3 DLC is only accessible in Japan. Worry not however, as word has it the European and American PSN will be updating later tonight with the content.
Alongside a DLC update, SEGA have released a patch for the game currently only downloadable through the Xbox Live Marketplace. While it doesn’t fix everything, incorrect totals on the map screen have been fixed and a slight optimisation of the code for the Adabat stage has been put into place, lessening the frame rate drops by a small amount.
Hopefully more Adventure Packs will be made available to download in the future, alongside more frequent patches for the game, hopefully fixing art book glitches and the loss of frame rate in Eggman Land especially.
