Nintendo Acción Magazine Confirms 3DS Sonic Game
Spanish magazine Nintendo Acción has confirmed in their latest issue that a Sonic game is on the way for Nintendo 3DS.
The small piece (Google Translated) states:
Just at the end of this issue, Sega confirmed to us that a new Sonic is coming to 3DS. And not just talking about the next Olympic challenge, with Mario, but a new unique product.
Whether this game is an exclusive 3DS title or the much rumoured 3DS version of Sonic Generations is anyone’s guess. Hopefully SEGA will reveal all soon or at E3.

Sonic Generations 3DS & PC Listings Removed, Cream the Rabbit Teased
SEGA has now removed the Nintendo 3DS and PC versions of Sonic Generations that were listed in SEGA Sammy’s earnings report May 17th. NeoGAF member Shiggy, who admins claim is very reliable, says retail sources have also been informed about this by SEGA. Now this could mean that the listings were an error or it could be SEGA patching a leak. Hopefully SEGA will speak out on this soon.
In others news, Cream the Rabbit’s Japanese voice actress Sayaka Aoki has revealed on her blog that she has been recording some voice work for Sonic Generations and posted the above image.
Here’s a Google translation of the blog entry:
We have been recording a new Sonic game!
Cute as ever grinded in Cream ♪
Chocolate ice cream with Itadai until after recording,
Kanamaru’s behind me is (Sonic’s), and
Be able to talk to you a long time,
Recording was fun!All means for your interest ~ ♪
From this we can only assume that Cream the Rabbit will be one of Sonic’s friends Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said would be appearing in Sonic Generations’ story.

SEGA Considered Peripheral For Latest Mario & Sonic Game
SEGA has told Videogamer.com that they once considered launching a peripheral together with Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the early days of development.
“In the very early stage of this project, we even considered creating a new peripheral that works – that matches best for this game. We always try to look for new alternatives or possibilities.”
No information was given as to what the peripheral may have looked like, what its function was or which platform it was for, but with Mario & Sonic’s brand power and SEGA’s success with past entries in the series, their new game doesn’t really need peripherals to sell it anyway.

Graphic Novels and Large B&W Books Come to Archie’s Sonic
TSSZ news got word from an article in Publishers’ Weekly that a new “phone book” size comic will be coming out called Sonic Legacy. The first 512 page black and white Sonic book chronicling his first two years at Archie comics. These large B&W volumes are similar to Marvel’s “Essentials” series. Due to using black and white newsprint, these large volumes can come out at cheaper prices.
Meanwhile, Sonic Universe titles will be given the graphic novel treatment. Starting with the four-part Shadow saga. There will be extras included in the graphic novels to encourage fans to buy the hard copies instead of digital download. This is great news as these books will be available in standard book stores and not just comic shops. Ian Flynn has stated “And now, some two years after the fact, you know the reason why SU has always have a 4-issue arc format. We’ve been tailor-making this series for GN production from the start.”
Also, the Archives series of digests continue with the Knuckles Archives. Which will feature several of the first issues of Knuckles 32 issue chronicles.
Publishers Weekly Article can be found here.
Sonic Legacy Volume one is due to hit bookshelves in December.

New Issue of OXM UK Reveals More Sonic Generations Details
Some pieces of new information about Sonic Generations have arisen in a new four page preview in the new issue of Official Xbox Magazine UK, which includes a short interview with Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.
New details from the feature are below:
* Current story details are:
“A mysterious new nemesis (Sega isn’t saying more than that at this time) arrives on the scene and immediately sets about eradicating the very fabric of space and time, as you do when you want to impress the new neighbours, The net result is that modern-day Sonic falls through a wormhole and winds up back in 1991, where he comes-to-face with his younger, squatter, flatter self.
1990’s Sonic isn’t much of a conversationalist, but since the entire world around them has suddenly been drained of colour, it doesn’t take a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation for the two of them to realise that something has gone desperately wrong. Hence, the two ‘hogs combine forces to form what Sega is calling a ‘Dream Team’ partnership, with the aim of restoring colour and vitality to some of Sonic lore’s most famous zones by besting them in both 2D and 3D.”
* Iizuka tells OXM that like Green Hill Zone’s new cave section, every classic level will feature a new visual element to keep things fresh.
* “One of the main rules Sonic Team has abided by during Sonic Generations’ development is that there would be no re-using of old assets or level designs – these are brand new courses with a stunning HD lick of paint.”
* While OXM feels Sonic 4: Episode 1 is an excellent platformer in its own right, they think Sonic Generations feels more like a true follow-up.
* “Sonic’s jumps are weighted perfectly and the sense of speed is as breathtaking as it was 20 years ago.”
* When asked how past levels were selected for the game, Takashi Iizuka responded:
“We took a democratic approach. We only get to celebrate Sonic’s 20th birthday once, so we wanted to make sure everyone got a say. What we did was poll every Sega worker – including those in Europe and America – and asked them to nominate their favourite Sonic levels of all time. Then we did some research with the core fanbase and we were able to draw up a shortlist from there.”
* OXM also asked Iizuka if it was harder to reverse-engineer 3D levels to work in 2D, or vice-versa, to which he answered:
“It was definitely harder to get the 3D levels working in 2D, because some of the famous contraptions – the things that define those levels – have been designed to work freely in three dimensions. It was a real challenge to get them to work recognisably in a 2D plain. Of course, many modern 3D stages also have 2D sub-sections within them, but Sonic has a different moveset in Generations than he did in those games, so that was another thing we had to take into consideration.”
* When asked if Sonic’s friends will be making an appearance, Iizuka replied:
“Of course, because they’re a big part of Sonic history! But they’ll only be making cameos, be it as part of the story or in the backgrounds. Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic will be the only two playable characters in the game.”

SEGA Japan Planning Special Surprise For Sonic’s Birthday?
Brazillian Sonic fansites Power Sonic and Sonic Zone are reporting that SEGA Japan has revealed news to press that the company will be bringing lots of Sonic content on our favourite blue hedgehog’s big 20th Birthday. SEGA is said to be adding lots of items to its official Sonic Channel website, some news to its official Sonic Generations website and unveiling a surprise. Could this surprise have something to do with the Sonic Generations demo that was recently approved at the Australian Classification Board’s website or the possible Nintendo 3DS version of the game in the works? RUMOUR: Sonic Generations Coming to Nintendo 3DS?
We’ve just heard word from SSMB member Hero of Legend that his local GameStop store in Canada is listing a portable version of Sonic Generations for Nintendo 3DS. The game is currently scheduled to just be coming to Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 consoles.
Here’s Hero of Legend’s report:
So I went to my local GS in Canada, and I asked if the person working there could print out their system game schedule, as their websites suck now for new game findings (US and Canada sites).
So I looked in the 3DS section, and found this:
Release Date – Description – System – Price – SKU
12/31/11 – SONIC GENERATIONS – 3DS – 39.99 – 7031719
It’s not in the Wii or DS section sadly. But this makes sense given the 3DS’ PS360 shading capabilities.
A Sonic game was listed to be coming to Nintendo 3DS in a press document at last year’s E3 and recently it was revealed that Nintendo Power’s latest issue hints at the possibility of Sonic Generations coming to a Nintendo platform(s) in its next issue page. Fellow fansite Sonic Paradise also reported in March that the SEGA representative they spoke to in October told them that ‘Sonic Anniversary’ would be coming to Nintendo 3DS. If true, this would all tie together perfectly.
If we hear any more news regarding this, we’ll be sure to pass it along.

Sonic Generations Demo Approved For Australia
Australia’s Classification Board today approved a demo for Sonic’s new PS3 and Xbox 360 title Sonic Generations. The board rated the demo ‘General’, which deems it fit for all audiences to play. With the demo being rated now and the full game not due out until the holiday season later this year, could we be getting to download a sample of the game sooner rather than later?
A demo for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) was released on Xbox Live Marketplace in September, rather than around the full game’s November release, as with most game’s demos. There’s always the possibility that this could just be a rating for a demo being shown to the press and/or public at various events though, so don’t get your hopes too high.
Sonic’s 20th Birthday is June 23rd and we’re sure a demo release around then would be a welcome surprise for fans.

Sonic Adventure Coming to the Art of Video Games Exhibit
According to our good friends over at SEGAbits, the original Sonic Adventure will be appearing as part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s “Art of Video Games” exhibit. The game won via a public vote the Smithsonian held earlier in the year, over Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi.
Sonic Adventure wasn’t the only Sonic Team game to win, though. Phantasy Star 1 and 4 also made it, as well as Chu Chu Rocket. Unfortunately, Sonic CD lost to Earthworm Jim for the Sega Genesis/CD action game placement, and NiGHTS -criminally- lost to Tomb Raider for the SEGA Saturn’s action game placement. For a full list of winners, including a full list of every single SEGA game that made it in, head over to SEGAbits.

Nigel Kitching to Return to Summer of Sonic
The Summer of Sonic convention has always been an awesome place to chill out with the legendary writers and artists behind the Sonic the Comic series, and this year is no exception. Nigel Kitching will be attending SoS this year to help celebrate the blue blur’s 20th Anniversary in style.
From the Summer of Sonic website:
Licensed by SEGA and published by Egmont Fleetway, Sonic the Comic was the perfect (and cheap!) way for British fans of the blue blur to get their dose of hedgehog antics. While initial issues back in 1993 played it safe with the license and offered one-issue strips, Kitching was responsible for spicing up the comic’s plot and giving the book its own unique flavour.
The result was a two-part story (Dr. Robotnik sending Sonic the Hedgehog into the near-future and taking over Mobius in his absence) that would set the foundations for an incredible alternate Sonic universe – one that wasn’t shy to veer from the convention set by the official games, but was also intimately respectful of its source material.
Nigel will be present at The Summer of Sonic 2011 to meet with fans and feature in a panel discussing his comic career and his time on Sonic the Comic.
The fun part is, so far The Summer of Sonic has exclusively announced comic stars as special guests. Could there be yet more guests in other areas that we don’t know about yet, or is this going to be an all-out Comic fest? I certainly wouldn’t place bets on the latter, if I were you…

The ship fleet Oracle (written in Japanese, “オラクル”) which travels the endless stars. A new adventure that awaits on the countless planets. Invasion of the malice that covers the universe. The name of the people who face off against them is Arcs (in Japanese, “アークス”). Will the universe be saved, or will it be swallowed up? It’s in the hands of the hero (you).

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games to Contain Online Features?
UK online retailer Play.com is now listing Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games on their website and on the Wii version’s page they have temporary box artwork featuring the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo, which indicates the game will take advantage of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in some way. The 3DS pack shot doesn’t feature the logo, but neither did Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, and that game had online multiplayer, so Nintendo has seemingly scrapped the logo for 3DS games.
The past two titles in the Mario & Sonic series have all supported Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on both Wii and DS with online leaderboards, so it’s to be expected that SEGA will add the same feature to this new game, but could there be more features? The Wii is certainly capable of more and Nintendo 3DS has a simpler friend code system than Nintendo Wii and DS and interesting Spot Pass features to boot, so SEGA has plenty of online features they could explore to bring something new to the series.
Until we get official word on online features we advise you take this with a pinch of salt for now. When more details are revealed we’ll pass them on.

RUMOUR: Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Evidence Builds Up
Following the leaked temporary box art (shown above) for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games on Nintendo Wii that hit the net last week, more evidence of the game’s existence has appeared in two reports. The first one from French website SEGA-Mag.com on April 14th claims that Spanish voice actor Fabio Tassone who worked on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games has the new game listed on his online resume, but the only problem is that it’s not there, so if the report is true, then Tassone has since removed it.
The second report is from the print edition of UK trade magazine MCV, which Sonic Wrecks founder ArchangelUK says contains an article about Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games entitled “Will this be the biggest video game of 2012?”. In AAUK’s news story at Sonic Wrecks he reports that MCV’s article features an higher quality version of the logo than the one seen in the temporary box art, which could mean that assets for the game have already been given to some press out there.
MCV also claims to know this new Mario & Sonic game’s current release schedule:
“MCV understands the game could arrive as early as this Christmas.”
The last two games in the series have both released in the holiday season (apart from the DS version of the first game), so it’s kind of expected that this new game would follow suit, but it’s very odd for a major trade magazine like MCV to be speaking about an unannounced game so openly like this. It’s also worth noting that this article is currently nowhere to be seen on MCV’s website. Could SEGA be planning to reveal Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games soon?

Classic Sonic Won’t Be Saying a Word in Sonic Generations
SEGA’s RubyEclipse has revealed in some posts at the SEGA Forums on Monday that pudgy ‘ol Classic Sonic will not be gaining a voice box in the new game Sonic Generations.
Johnny_Boy at the SEGA Forums pointed out that Classic Sonic appears to have a short voice clip in the new Sonic Generations gameplay trailer, but RubyEclipse answered with the below post:
Actually, that’s just the modern voice being used in the trailer during classic gameplay.
Worry not, Classic fans. 🙂
The voice clip appears to be an error made during the trailer’s production:
No, I’m not sure why it was added in the trailer. 🙂 I’ll poke somebody about the nuances of including modern Sonic’s voice alongside gameplay of Classic Sonic.
RubyEclipse goes on to explain the reasoning behind the decision to make Classic Sonic mute:
It’s a big deal for some because Classic Sonic never really spoke in the old games. Save for Jaleel White, who voiced our blue hero in the old Sonic Cartoons, it’s generally taboo to have Classic Sonic speaking. Hope this explained a bit!
Finally, RubyEclipse gives a straight confirmation of Classic Sonic’s silence and acknowledges how much it means to some people out there.
There’s a lot about the game that remains secret. Much of the gameplay is still in that realm, so I can’t offer new tidbits of info you may not have already seen there.
As to voices, it’s been already confirmed that Classic Sonic doesn’t talk, so I was happy to clarify – it means a lot to some people!
What do you think about SEGA’s decision to keep Classic Sonic silent in the voice department? Share your thoughts in the comments.

If this report is true, then this will be the first time a Sonic game has been dubbed outside of the English and Japanese languages and shows SEGA is really pulling out all of the stops for fans to mark Sonic’s big 20th Anniversary celebration.
SEGA’s not confirmed this information through any of their official websites or social media outlets, but if we hear anything we’ll update you.

New Sonic Generations Gameplay Video Confirms Classic Music

Spanish gaming website Meristation has posted a new video interview with Sonic Team head in which he confirms other characters will appear in Sonic Generations, but he wouldn’t say whether they would be playable or limited to the story. Plenty of direct-feed gameplay footage is also included in the video, which confirms the original classic Green Hill Zone music will play during classic Sonic’s stage, while a remix of the same music will play during modern Sonic’s stage.

Sonic Generations Previews and Interview With Iizuka
With the official announcement of Sonic Generations comes the first batch of hands-on previews and an interview with Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka from the internets top gaming websites revealing more details about the game. We’ve dissected a few of the features below if you just want the main points.
IGN
– Classic Sonic plays as you remember him from the 16 bit days
– “On the other there’s the dynamic 3D acrobatics of modern Sonic, complete with homing jump, dash attack, and an added sense of speed.”
– IGN give the impression that this game embraces the classic Sonic games better than Sonic 4: Episode 1 did.
– Takashi Iizuka responds to IGN’s criticism of Sonic 4: Episode 1 and says this game will have different physics to that game: “In [Sonic the Hedgehog 4] Episode I, we didn’t actually return to the old physics, and nor did we try to create something totally new,” Iizuka says, “What we tried to do was respond to the voices we heard in the fans, and create something based on the feedback we were receiving from fans. On this occasion, with Sonic Generations, we’ve created a game with a totally different game and with completely different physics.”
– Momentum gameplay returns in Sonic Generations.
– IGN says this game’s levels are all from the series’ 20 year history.
– “It’s not a pixel-for-pixel remake”
– “There have also been a few concessions to the modern generation”
– Speed runs are encouraged
– Checkpoints throw up a split time, letting the player know how far down they are on their personal best time, making online leaderboards very likely to be featured in the final game.
– In reference to Modern Sonic: “Thankfully, Sonic Generations seems to be taking many of its cues for the 3D sections from Colours, and it shares the Wii games hyperactive imagination. In a handful of short minutes Sonic is spun and sped through the chequered hills with breathless pace, at one point taking a detour through a dank cave which he’s chased out of by a giant chomping robot fish.”
– All levels are playable by both Sonic’s.
Gamespot
– Current playable demo has the game’s first two levels
– “The game will encompass the 20 years of Sonic’s history and will be set across three defining eras: the 2D Mega Drive/Genesis era, the introduction of 3D in the Dreamcast era, and the modern-day HD graphics era.”
– “Instead of creating new levels, the developers have re-vamped a bunch of iconic stages throughout these eras in HD and have given players the choice of playing each stage in either classic side-scrolling 2D or in modern-era 3D”
– Classic Sonic’s gameplay style and move set is from the classic era, while modern Sonic plays as he does in his respective era, “meaning the spin dash and spin attack for classic Sonic and the homing attack and sonic boost for modern Sonic.”
– Green Hill Zone was played in both classic and modern
– “Our head spun as we watched Sonic get back into old form in the classic mode, zipping around the various springs, slopes, and loops, jumping for rings, avoiding spikes and generally becoming reacquainted with all his old abilities (the spin dash is a favourite). It’s fast, but it’s nothing compared to what comes next.” From this we can assume that the spin-dash hasn’t been nerfed like in Sonic 4: Episode 1.
– Modern Sonic has the camera follow closely behind him, as shown in the trailer and screenshots.
– Modern Sonic can use homing attack
– “This incarnation of the level also introduced zip lines, which Sonic glides across to avoid pits and large bodies of water. We also saw an underground part that has Sonic sliding across a zip line through a cave while being pursued by a giant mechanical fish. Things got crazy when Sonic decided to use his boost while zipping: it took the game from supersonic to hypersonic with no remorse for the poor sod watching (us).”
– Multiple paths return for modern Sonic.
– “Our demo was over before we knew it, but it left us feeling giddy with excitement. Or maybe just giddy.”
Gamespot also has an interview with Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.
– Sonic Generations uses the Hedgehog Engine used in Sonic Unleashed
– A “playable menu” lets you pick between classic Sonic and modern Sonic and their respective levels.
– “Moving forward we would like to continue creating, and ensure Sonic is enjoyed by as many people as possible, not just in games but in other media as well.”
– Iizuka says the team is trying to bring everything from Sonic’s 20 year history for all kinds of Sonic fans to enjoy in this new game.
