SEGA Officially Announces Sonic Generations for Xbox 360 and PS3

SEGA has just officially announced the title of their new Sonic game for Xbox 360 and PS3. As leaks and rumours suggested, the game is titled Sonic Generations and will be released Holiday 2011. SEGA’s also issued a press release revealing details about the game and its plot, as well as some screenshots and a trailer.

Celebrate 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog with Sonic Generations™

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (April 18th, 2011) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. & SEGA® America, Inc., today announced details of Sonic Generations™, the highly anticipated video game title in development to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. Delivering the definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new, Sonic Generations™ sees Sonic the Hedgehog playable as both the much loved classic 1991 character, and the modern day video game hero he has become in this exciting new fast paced adventure. Sonic Generations™ will speed into stores for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system for Holiday 2011.

Set across three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history, the instantly recognisable environments of Sonic Generations™ have been re-built in stunning HD and are now playable in both classic side scrolling 2D from 1991, as well as modern 3D style found in Sonic’s most recent adventures. Each incarnation of Sonic in Sonic Generations™ comes complete with his trademark special move, Spin Dash and Spin Attack for Classic Sonic, and Homing Attack and Sonic Boost for Modern Sonic. An innovative new interactive menu system allows for complete immersion in Sonic’s universe with favourite characters and hidden treasures gradually being revealed throughout the game.

Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time. As a result he encounters some surprises from his past history including Classic Sonic, Sonic as he appeared in 1991. Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic must defeat this strange new enemy, save their friends, and find out who really is behind this diabolical deed…

  3. Woooow! Green hill looks gorgeous, much better than i expected! Glad to see all that whites gone too 😛
    so does it means that classic sonic plays in 2D and modern plays in 3D? That sounds cool, as long as its not the same one whose appearance switches between 2 and 3D, i think that would kinda spoil it lol

      Oh yes, let’s make Sega give it to us early so you can appreciate some quirky and convenient contrivance of it being released exactly on Sonic’s birthday, rather than them taking half a year longer to polish the game off.

      They are thinking about the fans…you obviously are only thinking about yourself.

  9. Looks like classic sonic’s stage is a strait remake of the original zone and modern sonic’s version is remade unleashed style…. Pure Epic Win. Now I can only hope for a chemical plant zone. End of line.

    This game looks fucking incredible. I think it’s going to work, I seriously think it’s going to work. This might be the game that can truly please both sides of the Sonic spectrum. :’)

    1. I think you’re confused. I think you’re supposed to be talking about how the game is a total letdown because it isn’t modeled after Sonic Adventure in any way. No? Hmm.. then I’m alright with this.

  27. OMFG!!! thiz looks amazing. Since I love both classic and modern Sonic, this game is shaping up to be my favourite Sonic game of all time. As much as I’d love to play this game just now, I really hope Sega take their time with this and don’t screw it up like they did with Sonic 06. In other words… take as long as you need Sega to make this game AWSOME! I am willing to wait.

    SEGA will make Sonic and Amy more as offical couple.

    2. In order to stop the time-holes and stop making infinite, Mobius crushing paradoxes, both Sonics have to go back to Stardust Speedway and murder Amy, and neither of them are regretful.

      Then they start making out. SEGA hates you.

  38. Screw sonic 4…This should’ve been sonic 4. That 2d classic sonic gameplay looks gorgeous…I’m extremely happy with what I’m seeing. I honestly don’t think they can mess this one up.

  45. Iam siding with ein Eagle Vanato on this ‘Favourite characters in a anniversary game has got to be a shoe in for the forgotten characters like MIGHTY & FANG/NACK etc. Also this is gonna be one hell of a game 😀

    Classic Sonic – Original/Classic and Old style Gameplay – Cool and Collected 🙂 as well as being Challenging and clever 😉
    Modern Sonic – Unleashed style Gameplay Wild and Exciting but also FAST AND FURIOUS 😀 HELL YEAH!

    I’m so excited Oh god XD

    I wonder if they will be multiplayer

    So there would be more playable characters

    Probably Modern and Classic versions of Tails,Knuckles,Amy and Eggman…I think those would be the only characters acceptable

    Well I guess we will have to wait once again for more info…and previews in the near future

  50. Nice, SEGA. I don’t know if your readiing this, but bring shadow back into the series. I really miss that black hedgehog…even if he’s not playable, can he still have a spot in the story mode? 🙂 does anyone else miss Shadow the black cool Hedgehog?

  51. What i am wondering now is, which “three defining era’s” are they including?
    Over the 20 years there has been a number of era’s they could pick from. But how will they treat them? What do they consider an Era?
    Will it be like “Mega Drive Era” etc, or a smaller period of time, like 1991 – Sonic 1, then two more random games and bam that’s it or what?
    Since an Era can be any number of years it is rather open ended.

    This might seem silly, but I’m rater pleased 😛 I actually really expected such plot to be there.

    Oh and btw, I’ll laugh if Shadow will be in the game. I’ll laugh even more if I’ll see “Classic Shadow”
