About a year ago, we brought you news that Sega was experimenting with Sonic in Virtual Reality and were looking to create a VR themed roller coaster.
Well it seems that experiments with Sonic and VR were not just limited to theme park attractions. Based on files found in the PC version of Sonic Forces, it looks like there was a VR mode/demo in the game.
The Cutting Room floor discovered a single splash screen in the files for the PC version of the game. The file in question is located within “vr_stage.pac“.
This is all that appears to be left over, so for those of you hoping for footage of this mode, we’ll just have to use our imaginations on that.
Also as an interesting side note, the game really was at one point entitled ‘Sonic 2017’.

At the New York Toy Fair, Diamond Select Toys have revealed their new line of Sonic toys, during an interview with Pixel Dan, when talking about the Sonic toys, the toy fair rep said the following.
“There are some minifigures […] some come with diorama pieces you’re going to build a race track from the game…“
Whilst it’s possible that this is in relation to ASRT or a past racer game, it seems very unlikely that this is for a previous racing title since they’re several years old now. The fact it mentions racetrack suggests that it is in vehicles so it’s unlikely that these would be Sonic R related products.

Sumo Digital’s mysterious new kart game, with all the independent rumours flying around, is quickly becoming SEGA’s worst-kept secret. Today, we learned of a new piece of information to add to the rumour mill; that whatever the UK developer is working on will focus entirely on Sonic, and won’t feature any associated SEGA universe characters. Over in Nuremberg, the annual Spielwarenmesse toy fair is underway and as usual the toy makers are showing off their new toys for release later this year. Well, one such toy maker has just added fuel to a fire which had been virtually extinguished earlier this week.
Zappies who were responsible for a number of All Stars Racing Transformed toys way back when the game was first release were at the convention and have allegedly told Spindash.de that there is a third Sonic racing game on the way!
Whilst there is no outright proof of such a game, what strongly supports it is that their booth is full of the original ASRT toys which went out of production years ago. They claim these are here as placeholders in a bid to give some retailers an idea as to what the new game and toys will look like.
This comes less than a week after a document from Sumo Digital was leaked which suggested a new ‘Kart Racer’ from a ‘Global IP’ was in development, and just days after Aaron Webber claimed that it wasn’t happening.

As of today, Sonic Mania’s soundtrack is no longer a vinyl exclusive, as it has finally hit digital music platforms as Sonic Mania Selected Edition. This version of the soundtrack is more comprehensive than the vinyl, containing all forty-seven music tracks created for the game. The soundtrack can be downloaded for $15.99 on iTunes, $14.49 on Google Play, and $18.99 on Amazon. Individual tracks can be had for $1.29, $0.99 and $1.29 on each service respectively.
While the soundtrack is pretty comprehensive, there is a reason why it is called the “Selected Edition”. The album lacks the tracks that were originally composed for Sonic 1 and 2.

Sonic has his first game of 2018 and it’s not what you’d expect.
Introducing Sega Slots. A new game for iOS and Android. It’s a gambling simulator slot machine game. One of many kinds you can find on mobile devices. In Sega Slots you start with Sonic Slots only and level your way up to Shinobi, Golden Axe, Super Monkey Ball and more. The top level game at 101 is Classic Sonic in Casino Night Zone (makes sense). It includes mini games as well as the regular slot machine games.

A series staple since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 over twenty-five years ago right up to the recent Sonic Mania, either earning the seven Chaos Emeralds or clearing the game’s story often yielded the highly coveted reward of Super transformation. From there, simply collect fifty rings mid-stage, transform, and blast off with ring-fueled invincibility and faster speeds.

After months of waiting, Sonic Runners Adventure is finally coming to Apple and Google’s official mobile storefronts. While Android users have been able to buy the game for the past several months through Gameloft and some other websites, the game’s arrival on the App Store will mark the first time iOS users will be able to play the game.
While the announcement trailer doesn’t have a firm date, the game will likely arrive on both storefronts within the next few days.

With word from Xbox’s very own Larry Hryb, “Major Nelson” himself has revealed today that the Xbox Live Arcade version of Sonic Adventure 2 is at last Xbox One Backward Compatible. Those who previously owned the remastered HD edition of this classic on Xbox 360 can recover the digital download at no extra cost; those interested in picking it up can do so for $9.99/£6.75/9,49€.

It can be hard to produce a companion app for a high-profile console game. It’s odd to think it’s been so long since the last major Sonic the Hedgehog release from Sonic Team. In fact, it’s just over six years since the release of Sonic Generations for the 20th anniversary. I’m sure there were raised eyebrows as the 25th anniversary came and went without an A-list title, but perhaps the majority let this pass as the fandom became gripped amidst ‘Sonic Mania’. The North American version of the Sonic Forces launch trailer was officially released by SEGA today. Unfortunately, unlike the Italian version we reported on a few weeks ago, this trailer contains some serious spoilers. Not just unannounced levels like the Sonic Mania, but actual footage of the game’s final boss and ending cutscenes.

Did you enjoy all that spoiler-dodging in the wake of the Sonic Mania leaks? Well, we’ve got good news for you: you get to do it again with Sonic Forces!
At least several copies of the Switch version of the game have been sold early by as-yet unknown retailers. Unfortunately, while the person who posted the images in the above tweet has refused to leak anything, others haven’t been so restrained. Sonic Forces streams are reportedly already popping up, though SEGA is taking them down.
Just like with Sonic Mania, we won’t be reporting on the impending wave of spoilers from these streams. If you want to avoid them, you may want to stay off social media and message boards until you’ve played the game yourself.

As we mentioned yesterday, Sega released a demo for Sonic Forces on the Japanese Nintendo eShop. Today the Japanese PSN also got the demo; this prompted many fans to speculate that the demo might eventually end up on western stores by next week.
Unfortunately, this will not be the case.
Earlier tonight on the Sonic the Hedgehog live-stream, Aaron Webber confirmed that the demo would not be making it to the west. Whilst no direct reason was given, it was suggested that regional differences were the reason behind the decision which was also the reason for the 60 second time limit.
If you are desperate to try the demo. You can create Japanese accounts on your PS4 and Switch and still download and play it, just a little extra hurdle but it is possible.

At more than a week and a half away from release, it’s a bit early for a Sonic Forces launch trailer. Still, that hasn’t stopped someone from leaking it: the Youtube channel Koch Media Italia has released the Italian version of the game’s launch trailer, which has Knuckles narrating the struggle against Eggman’s forces and recruiting you to fight for the resistance. A new Sonic Forces trailer was recently released from Sega of Japan. This new trailer focuses more on the story mode, but also gives more detail on what you can expect from the game more than any trailer released so far. This includes being able to borrow your friend’s avatar, a sneak peek at more stages and more details on customization options. So what do you think? In a NEOGaf thread discussing Sonic Forces, Sonic Social and PR Manager Aaron Webber confirmed that the game would have a lower difficult mode. Webber confirmed this to alleviate some concerns raised over a Forces video released by GameSpot a few days ago. In this video, the custom hero’s ring count capped off at one-hundred and only lost twenty when he was hit. Webber also confirmed that the game’s regular difficulty will not have this ring cap and getting hit will still result in the loss of all rings, aside from those the player is able to recollect, like nearly every other Sonic game.

With Sonic Force’s release now just three weeks away, SEGA is now finally showing off new parts of the game. Today’s trio of videos center around the game’s Avatar character, a boss battle and a somewhat new stage: Space Port.
I say somewhat because Space Port is technically the frozen-over Chemical Plant level we got our first screenshots of last week. It would appear the plant has been converted into launch base of some sort, with the chemicals now frozen solid in their tubes and vats. The “Rental Hero” feature allows you to rent other player’s heroes, and switch to them mid-level. SEGA also showed off a boss battle between the Avatar character and Force’s new antagonist, Infinite.

If the death of Archie Sonic has left a void in your heart, you won’t have to wait until IDW Sonic launches next April to fill it. SEGA has launched the first part of a four part Sonic Forces digital comic. Written by Ian Flynn, with art and lettering by Adam Bryce Thomas, it follows an unnamed member of the Resistance as he conquers his fears and aids the Chaotix in a battle against Eggman’s forces.

With less than a month to go until the official release date of Sonic Forces, PSN Profiles has listed all 46 trophies that can be achieved in the PS4 version of the game.

Sega revealed today that another old stage would be returning for Sonic Forces. This time the Chemical Plant is making an icy return.
Hinted at previously through in-game dialogue this is the first time we’ve seen the Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic Forces. However, unlike it’s incarnation in Generations and Mania, the Chemical Plant is a little chilly, it’s been frozen over with ice.
So far only screenshots showing the Avatar have been made available. But given the track history with Forces so far, odds are Classic and Modern Sonic will also see action in this stage.

Harris has now released some videos on his own channel showing off several of the assets that were seen in the portfolio in action, as well as other concept videos done in Sonic X-Treme’s development. Aside from showing off Sonic animations and Amy run cycles, there’s an early Tails model, several Badniks, logo animations and mock-ups showing off how platforms and pipes would work.
Most notably, Harris himself confirmed that a lot of this work is from the early stages of Sonic X-Treme as opposed to later on (which is when the development trouble really affected a lot of these ideas). It’s really interesting to see what the game might have looked like before the more famous period of the game’s history.
