Second Wave of Jakks Pacific Sonic Plushes Trickling into Retailers

The second wave of Jakks Pacific 7” Sonic plushes, which the company first revealed last year, is finally starting to make its way to stores. Although the plushes were supposed to hit stores on July 29, they have been hard to come by so far. They’ve mostly been appearing at online retailers like Toywiz, ToyZany, and eBay at inflated prices of between $20-$40 (for reference, the MSRP is $10.99).

These plushes are slowly beginning to appear at brick and mortar retailers…at least in the UK. Sonic youtuber Dave Luty was able to get his hands on a Mighty plush, which he posted pictures of on Twitter. Check them out in the embedded tweet below:

According to Luty, his store only had the one. Given the high prices for these plushes elsewhere, it would appear that availability is pretty limited, at least for now. With a third wave that also includes Mighty slated for September, hopefully they will become more available soon. I know some of us, myself included, have been waiting 25 years for a Mighty plush, and that wait may be coming to an end soon.

For an up close look at the new Mighty, Amy Rose, and Super Sonic plushes, check out the gallery below:

GameFly also lists a ‘Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz – HD Double Pack’ for Switch (Update)

Update @ 9:33PM EST 08/26/2020: Canadian retailer Video Games Plus has also put up the listing, alongside a HQ box which you can see above. They also put up a listing for the Sonic Mania + Team Sonic Racing Double Pack as well, now with similar bilingual packaging.

###

The double packs just doubled up! Following the earlier finding of a Sonic Mania + Team Sonic Racing Double Pack for Switch, this time retailer GameFly has put up the same listing, but also added a Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz – HD Double Pack for Switch as well. Sadly there is no accompanying box art this time, but the other pack’s box art will give you an idea of what to expect.

While the Sonic Mania + Team Sonic Racing pack is dated for October 26th, 2020 on Amazon for $39.99 USD, there’s no firm date yet for the Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD pack. However GameFly lists both for a placeholder October 31st, 2020 date. Perhaps both will release on the same day, possibly also for $39.99 USD?

Once again, when more shows up, we’ll let you know!

Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration coming to Ninjala for Switch

If you’ve been following things, you may remember that this was leaked via a datamining of the game Ninjala for Nintendo Switch (these things tend to happen) where references to the Sonic franchise were found. Anyway, Ninjala makers GungHo finally revealed the existence of the collaboration with our fav blue Hedgehog. Only, that’s all for now! We’ll have to wait and see what the collaboration will actually be about. When that time comes, we’ll let you know!

Ninjala for those who don’t know is a free-to-play competitive action game that’s out right now worldwide exclusively on Nintendo Switch (from the director of Dissidia Final Fantasy on PSP, I am not kidding). So if you have a Switch, you can try it out now (find your regional store page on the official site) and see if it’s your thing, and it’ll hopefully give you an idea on what to expect from this collaboration.

So this just popped up. It’s been reported that Amazon.com now lists a double pack of Sonic Mania (the vanilla version it appears) and Team Sonic Racing for Switch. Sonic the Hedgehog Returning to Select Theaters in US & Canada Today, Despite Safety Concerns

Paramount has revealed that their Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be returning to theaters in the United States and Canada for a limited time starting today. Currently, showings are listed for various theaters from today to next Thursday. As theaters attempt to navigate reopening amidst a pandemic, they are largely falling back on showing older films due to a dearth of new releases, with Sonic now being one of them.

We won’t beat around the bush, here: we at Sonic Stadium DO NOT endorse doing anything that will put your health at risk, including going to places like movie theaters where social distancing will be difficult to impossible. Last month, the Texas Medical Association released a chart that listed movie theaters as one of the places where risk of COVID-19 infection is high. While COVID-19 is believed to infect older and sicker people worse, healthy young people can also come down with a serious infection, which can lead to months of ongoing symptoms or death. If you still decide to go, please follow all health guidelines and ordinances.

Alternatively, you could just rent the movie for the price of a cheap movie ticket, or buy it outright for the price of a few, and just enjoy it in the safety of your home.

Sonic Team, It’s Time To Bring Back The Chao Gardens

When I was 18, it was in 2010 and I had yet to become a Sonic news writer. It was also the year that I got Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on the Gamecube. I wanted to get all the game’s emblems, only to learn that doing so meant that I had to go raise these little creatures that are called Chao, enter them in races and Karate tournaments, and get some emblems there. It didn’t take long before I discovered that raising these cute, adorable Chao is fun and addictive. Now, a decade later, I think it’s time that Sonic Team decided to bring that back.

Whisper the Wolf on her Second Anniversary

Two years ago today, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog #8 was released to the public. With that comic, we were introduced to Whisper the Wolf (conceptualised by Ian Flynn, designed by Evan Stanley). She’s based on the playable avatar in Sonic Forces (amongst other influences), fitting considering the comic started with the aftermath of that game. But there’s so much more to her than that.

When she debuted, she already had a reputation as a capable hero who helped others out when they needed it, hence her nickname being the “Guardian Angel”. However, she never joined any resistance team, so she also had a reputation as a lone wolf. Her personality befit this to a tee, but not in a typical manner. While she’s very focused and professional when on missions, she’s extremely shy, to the point that she usually talks in…well, a whisper. Thanks to an incident in the past which ended in her team’s death, she’s reluctant to get close to anyone lest they suffer the same fate. |Conversely, thanks to meeting Sonic and Silver on a base infiltration, she’s been steadily letting these walls down, showing that when you get to know her, she’s very kind, compassionate and cares deeply for her allies (unless you’re Shadow. There were androids in the incident). Even the wisps she uses for her multi-wispon weapon love her like a mother!

Naturally, she’s helped out the heroes since, grappling with her aversion to crowds to aid in fighting Neo Metal Sonic, helping in Tangle’s home town, fighting against Mimic with the personal baggage that came with him, and holding her own during the Metal Virus disaster (including yet more heartbreak. Don’t worry, this one got better). After this, the potential for where her story could take her is practically limitless. But even going off what we’ve got already, she’s a well-developed, sympathetic and just really cool character, so it’s no wonder she garnered so much attention so quickly.

Even though she’s only been around for a relatively short time in the Sonic universe, her impact has been massive for a comic character. She instantly became a fan favourite, both within the comic fandom and the general fandom at large. There was so much demand for more of her that a miniseries was given the greenlight, showing how Whisper came to become the hero she is today and working with Tangle to move on from her past trauma, making their recent friendship very close in the process.

But that’s not all. Whisper (and Tangle) managed to do something that very few non-game characters have managed; to actually be featured in video games! As of last month, she became playable in both Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces mobile. While these are spin-off mobile games, they give a very good foot in the door for more to be done with her. And even if nothing does become of it, it’s still an achievement for a comic character, and a testament to how beloved she is both in the fandom and within the company.

While we can all agree that the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie was jam-packed full of fantastic fan-service, one notable omission has been a talking point since its release – the lack of Sonic Adventure theme song group Crush 40 in the movie’s soundtrack.
