Sonic Triple Trouble is Getting a 16-Bit Makeover in a Fan-made Remake

Sonic Triple Trouble had all the makings of a fantastic 2D Sonic adventure, but—shackled by the 8-bit restrictions of the SEGA Game Gear back in 1994—fell short in a number of ways by no real fault of its own.

Enter Noah Copeland, in collaboration with Overbound Game Studio (the same team of fans responsible for Sonic Time Twisted), who seeks to correct this injustice with a question:

What if [Sonic Triple Trouble] became a Genesis/Mega Drive game?

Sonic Forces used to have a VR mode

About a year ago, we brought you news that Sega was experimenting with Sonic in Virtual Reality and were looking to create a VR themed roller coaster.

Well it seems that experiments with Sonic and VR were not just limited to theme park attractions. Based on files found in the PC version of Sonic Forces, it looks like there was a VR mode/demo in the game.

The Cutting Room floor discovered a single splash screen in the files for the PC version of the game. The file in question is located within “vr_stage.pac“.

This is all that appears to be left over, so for those of you hoping for footage of this mode, we’ll just have to use our imaginations on that.

Also as an interesting side note, the game really was at one point entitled ‘Sonic 2017’.

Second Toy Maker Hints At A Sonic Racer Game

Following on from Zappies claiming that a new Sonic racer was on the way, now a second toy maker has also hinted that a Sonic racer is in development.

At the New York Toy Fair, Diamond Select Toys have revealed their new line of Sonic toys, during an interview with Pixel Dan, when talking about the Sonic toys, the toy fair rep said the following.

“There are some minifigures […] some come with diorama pieces you’re going to build a race track from the game…

Whilst it’s possible that this is in relation to ASRT or a past racer game, it seems very unlikely that this is for a previous racing title since they’re several years old now. The fact it mentions racetrack suggests that it is in vehicles so it’s unlikely that these would be Sonic R related products.

The Sonic section begins at 8:32 and the ‘from the game’ line starts at around 9:00.

So what do you think? The rumours are certainly starting to add up now aren’t they?

This Sonic 2 Hack Adds Forces Physics, Works As Well As You’d Expect

We can all talk about the wonkiness of ‘My Saturday Morning Apocalypse’ adventure Sonic Forces all day long – perhaps never as concisely as our expert TSS Review, of course – but seeing its physics baked into another Sonic game really hammers home some of the gameplay issues that were prominent in the 2017 release. Two stinky new villains revealed IDW’s Sonic comic, plus other details

Sonic’s extensive rogues gallery will be getting some new additions in the IDW comics this April: the skunk brothers Rough and Tumble. This pair of malicious mephitidaes will be antagonizing Sonic and Knuckles in the series’ third issue.

Kotaku interviewed the comic’s associate editor David Marriotte, who said that the new villains aren’t exactly masterminds, meaning we shouldn’t expect them to be hatching any grand schemes any time soon. He also confirmed that they are “independent agents,” though did hint that they could become henchman down the line. So it may be safe to speculate that they’ll end up working for Dr. Eggman eventually.

Rough’s finalized concept sheet
Tumble’s final concept sheet

Marriotte also talked about how new comic characters are designed: they are first described by writer Ian Flynn in a few paragraphs, then they are designed by one of the comic’s artists, and then they are sent to SEGA for approval. After some back and forth between IDW and SEGA, the characters are fleshed out and finalized. According to Kotaku, the characters used to be more heavily clothed, had less defined eyes, and Tumble use to look a lot more rabid.

Meanwhile, in a Game Informer interview released yesterday, Ian Flynn confirmed that the IDW comics will be a fresh start focused on story elements and characters from the games. Early issues will feature stories that are light on world-building and lore, but heavy on adventure and cinematic action. Despite starting with “bite-sized” stories, Flynn also confirmed that these stories will start building up to a surprise that will pay off within the comic’s first year. This surprise will be an obscure antagonist that hardcore fans may be able to guess, but casual fans will find new and exciting. You can find the full interview, which goes into more detail about Flynn’s plans as well as his past, here.

Flynn later clarified on Twitter that he doesn’t want to front load a new, fast paced book with lore, and that he wanted to keep things game-centric to make the comic recognizable to casual fans. Once the tone is set, he will get into bigger arcs and begin exploring the characters.

IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog will launch April 4, and release a new issue every week for its first four weeks before going monthly with issue 5.

The Spin: How SEGA is Ignoring the Middle Children of Sonic’s Legacy

2010 was the year Sonic the Hedgehog came back. Yes, we all heard the stories about how the franchise had declined not long after the jump to 3D, how gaming news outlets and critics even now would begin their pieces with some variation of “Sonic has had a rocky history,” and how every new Sonic game released around the “dark ages” period couldn’t shake off the dreaded “Sonic Cycle.” Continue reading The Spin: How SEGA is Ignoring the Middle Children of Sonic’s Legacy

Diamond Select Toys Throws Hat Into Sonic Toy Market

Diamond Select Toys have been responsible for some very well done toy lines based on pre-existing licensed products such as Ghostbusters and Marvel. Well with New York Toy Fair just a few days away they have just announced that they will be making a new line of Sonic toys.

The first products will be on display at the International Toy Fair in New York City, with a focus on the core Sonic characters — the speedy hedgehog Sonic, the energetic Amy, Tails the two-tailed flying fox, Knuckles the powerful Echidna, Shadow the anti-hero hedgehog, Metal Sonic the evil robot hedgehog, and the mustachioed mastermind Dr. Eggman. Product categories include Gallery PVC dioramas, Minimates block figures, Vinimates vinyl figures and PVC mini-figures with collect-and-connect racetracks.

I’ll let you guys decide if you want to add that racetracks bit to the racer game rumour pile.

The company goes on to say

“It’s an honor and a challenge to develop products based a world with such a long history and distinctive style,” said Diamond Select Toys president Chuck Terceira. “The Sonic Universe has so many possibilities that we are excited to explore – in our established categories, like Vinimates, Minimates and Gallery PVCs, but also the PVC mini-figure category, which we are diving into for the first time!”

So we have, diorama style figures, miniture block figures, mini figures and racer figures!

The toys are due for release around Christmas 2018, but they will apparently be on display at the New York Toy Fair which is next week.

We’ll update you as soon as we get more information.

Sonic Battle Racers Kickstarter Now Live

About a week ago we brought you news that a Sonic themed board game was in development. Well the Kickstarter for said board game is now live.

Sonic Battle Racers has two backing options at the time of writing.

  1. Pledge $10 (or more): No Reward.
  2. Pledge $100: The Base game + Kickstarter Exclusive Super Sonic playable Piece + Kickstarter Exclusive physical badnik pieces + any stretch goals.

The game itself is essentially a race, with players attempting to win against several other opponents whilst dodging badniks and other traps. Included in the game are several badnik pieces which will not be available at retail to accompany Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman.

There are also promises of expansion packs to come at a later date but these are not included in the Kickstarter.

So what do you think? Going to back this game? Let us know in the comments.

Sonic The Hedgehog Totaku Figure Revealed

During the London Toy Fair, Think Geek revealed a new line of video-game based figures entitled ‘Totaku’, along with a report that a Sonic figure would also be joining the line at a later date. Which was supported by a silhouette outline of Sonic on the Totaku website.

Well it appears that the figure was indeed at the London Toy Fair as toy blogger Idle Hands managed to snag a few cheeky photos of it.

We can now also reveal some details and clear up some misconceptions about this figure line.

  • The figures are made by Think Geek, they are not made by Sony.
  • They are not a Sony exclusive line, Sony characters are just wave 1, Microsoft and other IP’s are joining later in the series.
  • The bases are connectable, meaning you can create your own diorama’s with multiple figures.

No release date has been confirmed yet, but keep checking TSS and we’ll post more details as and when we get them.

Toy Maker Zappies Claim New Sonic Racing Game for 2018

Over in Nuremberg, the annual Spielwarenmesse toy fair is underway and as usual the toy makers are showing off their new toys for release later this year. Well, one such toy maker has just added fuel to a fire which had been virtually extinguished earlier this week.

Zappies who were responsible for a number of All Stars Racing Transformed toys way back when the game was first release were at the convention and have allegedly told Spindash.de that there is a third Sonic racing game on the way!

Whilst there is no outright proof of such a game, what strongly supports it is that their booth is full of the original ASRT toys which went out of production years ago. They claim these are here as placeholders in a bid to give some retailers an idea as to what the new game and toys will look like.

This comes less than a week after a document from Sumo Digital was leaked which suggested a new ‘Kart Racer’ from a ‘Global IP’ was in development, and just days after Aaron Webber claimed that it wasn’t happening.

Keep checking TSS, hopefully we can get all this resolved very soon!
