20 Years of Sonic the Comic

STCp1Twenty years ago, many veteran fans amongst the community will probably remember racing to their local newsagents in order to grab the first issue of Sonic the Comic for the paltry price of 95 pence, and thumbing excitedly through the first pages of Sonic and SEGA-themed strips. In the many years that followed, fans saw the publication of 223 issues, 9 poster magazines and several special one-offs across nearly a decade of production.

The comic was renowned for its well-pitched storylines that appealed to both the younger and older audiences, for expanding the Sonic universe beyond the canon of the game and introducing several original characters; some of whom suffered a grisly demise (poor old Johnny Lightfoot!). For the majority of issues, the comic was presented by Megadroid, a robot reminiscent of a SEGA Megadrive (and later a SEGA Saturn), who took to naming the readers “Boomers” (and the writers “Humes” – short for “Humans”). As well as the Sonic-themed strips, the comic included a whole host of stories from SEGA titles such as Golden Axe, Decap Attack and Streets of Rage, as well as features and reviews on games, as well as fan art and mail; many fan-works featured were created by many of those who have remained fans to this day! Indeed, the publication garnered many fans, and some of you reading this today will probably owe STC as your introduction to the world of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Nintendo Logo

In a press release regarding yesterday’s Sonic Lost World updates, Nintendo Germany has revealed that all three Nintendo exclusive Sonic games will be released this year. That includes Sonic Lost World for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Wii U and the unannounced third title.

Sonic Lost World: First 3DS Screenshot

Following on from todays debut trailer for Sonic Lost World, it seems that IGN have also quietly posted a screenshot of what appears to be the 3DS version of the game.

From the looks of things, it’s a side scroller much like how the 3DS version of Sonic Generations was. Of course, with todays trailer completely shattering expectations, your guess is as good as mine at this point.

Furthermore, Executive Editor for IGN Rich George has said on twitter that more Lost World news will be posted later today.

SEGA’s Super Sonic Raceway Experience at… Mercedes Benz World?

sonicproducts-1905154

*holds hands up* I’ve tried, I promise you I have tried to find out as much as possible with this one, but I’m still at a bit of a loss when it comes to details and specifics. According to a handful or reports online. Sega have been holding a special Sonic event at Benz World. Not heard of Benz World? You know Mercedes Benz? Yes the car, they have a ‘Driving Experience Centre’ at a race course here in the UK. And, for some reason, Sega held a special day there.

Sega had a small presence there during this month in which they had face painting, showed off various Sonic products from the 2013 catalogue as well as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. One of the more interesting products would be an unannounced Sonic Pinball game which you can see at the top.

First4Figures Teases Shadow Figure

First4Figures, the company that has become famous for making collectible figures based off of video game characters that are fantastic in both quality and cost, have today revealed their next Sonic based figure: Shadow the Hedgehog.

It’s a pretty awesome looking figure. Going by the teaser, it looks like something that will go nicely next to their modern Sonic figure. Of course, quality always comes at a cost, so you can expect the Shadow figure to go for a few hundred dollars when it finally goes on sale.

RUMOUR: Sonic Lost World Details Coming May 29th, Game Features Six ‘Guardians’

Sonic Lost World

According to a couple of our readers, the official Sonic Facebook page leaked the Sonic Lost World announcement early this morning, including three images and the promise of more details May 29th. One of the images sounds like the above one released this afternoon, while another is said to have featured the outline of six ‘guardians’ from the game who may be friends or foes. What gives these details some credibility is that both readers say the leaked post mentioned the SEGA and Nintendo partnership for the next three Sonic games BEFORE it was even announced this afternoon.

You can read the 2 comments after the jump. Thanks to M.S. and Bark the Polar Bear for the info.

Sonic Universe #55 Cover Previews

SU55 SU55blaze

Arr matey’s! Get ready for a new venture!

After the “World’s Collide” arc, Sonic sets sail with Blaze, Marine, Amy, Cream, Bean and Bark on a high-seas pirate adventure called “Pirate Plunder Panic!” Ian’s taking a break this time as Tracy Yardley takes the writing reigns for the second time in the comic series. Judging from the covers alone, I’m guessing the story is likely a sequel to both “Sonic Rush Adventure” and the hilarious “Team Treasure Tango”. It’s unknown yet, I’ll bet fifty golden mobiums that Captain Whiskers and Johnny make appearances too. Looks like fun. I can’t wait!

As of yet theres no official screenshots but that hasn’t stopped someone from uploading one or two screens of the game. According to one user the game has a few more breakable walls which are most likely included due to the spindash being in this version, as well as a “fish eye lense feature.”

A Rooftop Run Race of Chaotic Proportions

Rooftop run is one of our favourite levels in both Unleashed and Generations. So when we had to pick a level to challenge the staff at The Sonic Show with, it was obvious what we were going to do.

For the last seven days, The Sonic Show has been going Let’s Play mad with a new LP every day. To round the week off the only solution was to get four of the staff involved in a mad cap race to the finish to see who is the ultimate Rooftop Run…ner?

Join us we have not one, but two interviews with the architect of the Sonic and Megaman crossover Worlds Collide: a text interview written up by Jason Berry and a two and a half hour long interview hosted by me on Sonic Talk featuring dozens of questions from fans like you.

Also, special thanks to Ian Flynn, who not only devoted a considerable amount of time to this, but also answered far more questions for the text interview than he had initially promised, due to me sending him the wrong text file that included a dozen questions that I had intended to omit.

Enjoy! You can also find the Sonic Talk interview here.

Lew Stringer’s Original Sonic the Comic Pitch

I’m a big fan of Fleetways Sonic the Comic, I’m always interested in finding out about it’s creation, the staff who worked on the comic as well as ideas which were changed or just never came to light for whatever reason. As you probably know, writer Lew Stringer had a long run on STC, he held position as a writer for years and became a fan favourite with many readers, his scripts were often unique and very entertaining. Even if you don’t consider them ‘main stories’ they were well contained, entertaining, full of humor and were a welcome break from the main narrative that the comic was doing at the time.

UNUSED_SONIC1

But… did you know that he originally applied to be an artist? And that his original pitch samples still exist? As I said at the start, I’m a big fan of STC, so I’ve heard of other artists being asked or attempting to get onto the team (one artist had an idea to make a ‘noir’ style Sonic, but that story is for another day), but I’ve never seen any real examples of artwork.
