It’s National Coffee Day, apparently, and the Sonic Movie twitter account decided to mark the occasion with a tweet featuring latte art revealing that Lee Majdoub would be returning in the Sonic movie sequel as Dr. Robotnik’s loyal henchman, Agent Stone.
This isn’t terribly surprising, as he was spotted on set months ago, but I guess it’s official now. Check out the latte art below!

Last year’s Sonic movie had a lot of success, but one thing it didn’t have was Crush 40. So, with the sequel coming next year, is that going to change? There’s no answer yet, but lead singer of Crush 40, Johnny Gioeli, is telling fans to “stay tuned”.

Idris Elba, an English actor and musician, has been confirmed for the role of Knuckles the Echidna in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie. Known for his roles in TV shows like The Wire and Luther and movies such as No Good Deed, Pacific Rim, the Thor trilogy, and the recently released The Suicide Squad, Elba has long had a presence in high budget television and blockbuster movies.
He also played Macavity in Cats. So, theoretically Knuckles can sing, I guess?
Knuckles and his voice actor have both long been part of Sonic 2 movie speculation. Even before Knuckles was leaked, actors like Dwayne Johnson and Jason Mamoa were both being rumored by nonsense websites as potentially being up for the role.
Alongside the announcement came a tease of how Knuckles will look in the movie: a roughed up boxing glove and some red fur. I know it’s not much, but as a long-time Knuckles fan, I like what I see! Check it out below:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit theaters on April 8, 2022, and is currently in post-production.

SPOILER WARNING: Don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled, you have been warned!
In new footage just leaked over Twitter, we have what is definitely a spoiler for the Sonic 2 movie: Sonic crashing Tom and Maddie’s Hawaii honeymoon, with what appears to be Tails and bad weather in tow. Well, specifically, he appears to be talking to Tails over some sort of radio. If I had to guess, this is from the start of the movie’s third act, and the point at which Tom and Maddie re-enter the plot.
It’s hard to make out exactly what is being said, but it seems that Sonic is “in trouble” with Tom (presumably something to do with the snow), Sonic is explaining that Robotnik is back, and as we said earlier, is talking to Tails over a radio.
We’ll work on getting our own recording in case this tweet gets deleted, but for now, here it is:
UPDATE: It appears the video was removed by Paramount. So it seems we’ve reached the limit of what media they’ll let float around! Of course, content like this is difficult to scrub from the internet (even we grabbed it, though we’re not posting it right now), so it’s probably still possible to find if you dig around for it.
We might attempt to update this post with a transcription, but for now we’ve at least got a screenshot from the video. It shows Tom and Maddie stumbling through the snow, right before Tom yells at Sonic and Sonic delivers his info dump:

SPOILER WARNING: If you don’t want to know anything about the Sonic 2 movie plot, stop reading now! Don’t complain in the comments! You have been warned!
A plot summary for the next Sonic movie has been released by the United States Copyright Office, and it puts some of the things we’ve seen in perspective. Check it out below:
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.
So, in many ways, this sounds like a stripped down adaptation of Sonic 2 and 3, combined. Knuckles is still working with Robotnik, Tails is now partnered with Sonic, and a chaos emerald is the focal point of the plot.
That chaos emeralds are even being introduced is pretty huge, and them only introducing one is about the only thing I asked for in my article a few months ago that this movie appears to have. It’s not much, but I’ll take it!
Another interesting thing about this article is that it appears to be writing Tom and Maddie out of the central plot, though it’s probably fairly likely we’ll get at least a few scenes of them on vacation (presumably in Hawaii), if not a substantial B-plot. CGI is expensive, after all, it can’t be in every shot!

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which began filming nearly two months ago on March 15, has officially wrapped up production in the area. Director Jeffrey Fowler posted a tweet thanking the local crew members who worked on the production. The tweet had him posing in front of something not included in any of the leaked images, mushroom props presumably from the mushroom planet. It’s probably safe to assume those scenes were filmed indoors on a sound stage.
Check out the tweet below:
Fowler did not say this was the end of shooting, however. The film is due to shoot in Hawaii as well, so that’s probably the production’s next stop. One wonders if the leaks will come just as easily from there as they did from Vancouver.

EDIT: The town featured here is actually Fort Langley, and not the location of Ladysmith used in the first movie. Thanks for the update Reggie!
IDW Sonic Comic artist Reggie Graham popped over to the little town of Ladysmith in British Colombia, Canada, to check out the set dressing for the Green Hills high street, currently being used for filming of the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie!
Posting on Twitter, Graham found amongst the many pieces displaying the Green Hills town name is a Coffee Shop named “The Mean Bean Coffee Co.”, a reference to the 1993 title Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine.
Great to see these little nods to Sonic’s past will continue in the next movie!

Earlier today on Twitter, Tails voice actor Collen O’Shaugnessey was showing off her new flocked Tails Funko Pop that she got from Target, when she broke some surprising news in the comments.
As we reported earlier this month, Colleen is one of several voice actors not returning to their previous roles in the upcoming Sonic Netflix show, Sonic Prime. However, as one fan mentioned how much they are going to miss her, Colleen surprised everyone with the following…
So what does this mean for Colleen in the role of Tails? Well, she’s completely out of Sonic Prime. “Still not Canadian, so still not doing prime” she replied to one fan. Whether she’ll be back for the Sonic 2 movie, or if she’s returning to the games, she definitely won’t be leaving Tails and the Sonic franchise behind just yet.
Both Sonic Prime and the Sonic 2 movie will be out next year.

So, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is about a year old now. Like many, I was absolutely surprised to see that it wasn’t a train wreck. I actually rather enjoyed it! With a sequel on the horizon, there are many things I’d like to see, as well as a few things I hope I don’t.

Masato Nakamura, the man who composed the music for Sonic 1 and 2 on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive, expressed excitement over the news that one of his compositions will be in the next Sonic movie. A remix of one of his tracks, Emerald Hill Zone, popped up in the recent Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie tease.
In a blog post, Nakamura expressed his feelings over the inclusion:
I am very happy to share the news. One of my compositions, “Emerald Hill Zone” will be used in the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” which will come out in 2022.
When I composed the music for “Sonic the Hedgehog 1&2”.I tried to write a soundtrack for the movie. I imagined the game like a movie.
After 30 years later, my music for the game becomes a part of the movie soundtrack of “Sonic the Hedgehog”.
Literally, it’s a dream comes true.
This isn’t the first time his work has appeared in a movie, as a jazz rendition of Green Hill Zone appeared at the end of the previous Sonic movie. You can read Nakamura’s entire blog post in the source at the bottom.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is set to begin filming next month, and is scheduled for release on April 8, 2022.

Actress Tika Sumpter, has confirmed two filming locations for the next Sonic movie: Vancouver and Hawaii. She revealed this during an interview on the talk show “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” During the interview, she talked about how her daughter adored Sonic and wanted to “meet him.” She also confirmed that filming for her will start in March.
It should be noted that principal photography for the first movie was in Vancouver, despite the story largely taking place in Montana and San Francisco, so these shooting locations don’t actually tell us much about the plot beyond the kinds of environments they may need for the movie.

Moviemaking can be difficult, especially in the middle of a pandemic. While answering a fan question on Instagram, Sonic movie writer Josh S. Miller said that he “wasn’t sure when filming would start,” and that the purely animated elements can be worked on first.
Filming in live action movies can be done much faster then CGI special effects, which take far longer to produce. The first Sonic movie’s principal filming took place over roughly a month, from mid-September to mid-October, with additional filming being completed later in October.
Stay tuned to Sonic Stadium for further developments on Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s production!
