New Cineworld Poster Includes Sumpter and O’Shaughnessey’s Names

Yet another Paramount Sonic controversy has found a positive ending, as a new version of last week’s Sonic 2 movie poster has been found on the website for UK cinema chain Cineworld, featuring the names of both Tika Sumpter and Coleen O’Shaughnessey.

The original version of the poster was revealed during an IGN online event, and only highlights Marsden, Schwartz, Elba, and Carrey, despite Sumpter and O’Shaughnessey’s characters prominently appearing in the art. While cast names on posters is often decided through the actors’ contracts and negotiations, this exclusion drew the ire of Sonic fans, those supporting O’Shaughnessey, and others supporting the broader treatment of voice actors in TV and film.

It’s unclear to what extent Paramount intends to propagate this version of the poster. At time of writing, the old version still appears on both Fandango and Regal Cinemas (an American subsidiary of Cineworld).

Colleen O’Shaughnessey To Reprise Her Role as Tails in Sonic 2 Movie

Tails is going to be getting something that is very rare in Hollywood video game adaptations: the same voice he has in the games. Instead of Tom Holland or Chris Pratt, Tails will instead be voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has been playing the character in the games since 2014. This was just confirmed by O’Shaughnessey herself via her Twitter account.

Technically, O’Shaughnessey’s has already voiced the character on the big screen, via the first movie’s after credits scene. It was unknown if she would be asked to reprise her role, since it’s not uncommon for Hollywood productions to recast actors when their character is upgraded to a larger role in a subsequent movie. Now that she’s been confirmed, O’Shaughnessey now has the rare distinction of voicing a Sonic character across video games, movies, and television thanks to her role in Sonic Boom.

A trailer for the Sonic 2 movie is widely expected to debut soon. Stay tuned to Sonic Stadium for that, and all the latest news!

Colleen O’Shaughnessey Isn’t Done With Tails Yet

Earlier today on Twitter, Tails voice actor Collen O’Shaugnessey was showing off her new flocked Tails Funko Pop that she got from Target, when she broke some surprising news in the comments.

As we reported earlier this month, Colleen is one of several voice actors not returning to their previous roles in the upcoming Sonic Netflix show, Sonic Prime. However, as one fan mentioned how much they are going to miss her, Colleen surprised everyone with the following…

So what does this mean for Colleen in the role of Tails? Well, she’s completely out of Sonic Prime. “Still not Canadian, so still not doing prime” she replied to one fan. Whether she’ll be back for the Sonic 2 movie, or if she’s returning to the games, she definitely won’t be leaving Tails and the Sonic franchise behind just yet.

Both Sonic Prime and the Sonic 2 movie will be out next year.

Colleen O’Shaughnessey Not Voicing Tails in Sonic Prime

Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Tails’ voice actress for the past seven years, has confirmed on Twitter that she will not be reprising her role in the upcoming Netflix series, Sonic Prime.

Unlike Roger Craig Smith, this does not yet appear to mark a permanent departure from the role, and it appears that Sonic Prime may instead either have a separate voice cast, or only share some cast members from the games. What makes O’Shaughnessey‘s lack of involvement especially surprising is that she did actually voice Tails in last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Mike Pollock, the voice of Eggman, does appear to at least be hinting that he is a part of the production. Though he could also just be trolling us for his own amusement:

Turnover in the Sonic voice acting cast is nothing new. Back in 2019, several characters had their voices recast, the most notable of them being Knuckles. The first major voice actor overhaul came in 2005, when every voice actor from the games was replaced with the cast from the recently released 4kids dub of Sonic X. That cast was in turn replaced five years later in 2010.

Sonic Boom Editors and Voice Actors Club Together for ‘Animation Under Lockdown’ Project

We miss Sonic Boom (the TV show, obviously). We’re sure you all do too. No doubt story editors on the cartoon, Greg Hahn and Alan Denton, miss the animation grind more than most though – and to pep themselves (and the world) up a little bit they’ve collaborated with ‘Sonic’ voice actor talent to perform a readthrough of one of their favourite unpublished pilot scripts.
