Team Sonic Racing is officially out tomorrow, and everyone is super-excited to get behind the wheel with the blue blur once again. We were invited this month to attend SEGA’s Team Sonic Racing Preview Event, hosted deep in the heart of London’s Shoreditch, and get our hands on the game’s latest build! What happened was an action-packed day filled with tournaments, time trials and a LOT of gameplay impressions. So, let’s get right to it!

In a bizarre marketing twist for a game already riddled with bizarre marketing decisions, SEGA has collaborated with another YouTube personality to promote Team Sonic Racing. This time, they took a YouTuber best known for Minecraft out to SEGA Europe’s office to drive a sports car. Don’t worry, it’s relevant – Sonic was also inside. Nintendo just uploaded a surprise video detailing the anticipated 3.0 update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Among other things discussed was the reveal of the returning Mii Fighter costumes for Tails and Knuckles.
These costumes debuted in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. In Ultimate, these can be purchased on the eShop for 75 cents USD each. Note that these do NOT come with the Fighters Pass and must be purchased separately.
The 3.0 update and all its contents, including the Mii Fighter costumes, will release tomorrow on April 17th.

Sega just released the HQ assets, including transparent PNG logos, HD versions of the two primary Switch screenshots, as well as the HQ version of the trailer with less compression. I made new screencaps from the HQ version of the trailer.

Sega have just announced the western release of the games. The Mario & Sonic game for Switch is now called Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The arcade game of course is titled Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – Arcade Edition. Finally, the mobile game is titled Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020.
For some reason, the Tokyo 2020 branding is missing from the logos, but the games are titled as such on the website as well as by Sega in their announcement tweet. All seem to still be published by Sega in the west (a first since London 2012), in fact Sega are publishing the games worldwide, which is a first in Japan where Nintendo published the Mario & Sonic series to date prior. Also, the arcade and mobile games are now dated for Summer 2020 in the west, rather than just the generic 2020 date in Japan. Check out the western website here.

At the SEGA FES 2019 event it was announced that the Mario & Sonic series will return with Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Switch. Not only that, a separate arcade game, simply titled Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Arcade Game, was additionally revealed, alongside a Sonic-only mobile game for both iOS and Andriod; Sonic at the Olympic Games.
SEGA previously announced back in October 2016, that they had secured the gaming license for the Tokyo 2020 games, but no confirmation was made that the Mario & Sonic series would be returning alongside Sega’s other more photorealistic Olympic video games to tie in with the event.
The title will be the 6th Olympic game title to feature Mario and Sonic following the Olympic game and Winter Olympic game titles.
Via the official Olympic Video Games website, the Switch game is due to release in Japan in Winter 2019. The arcade game is due sometime in 2020. Finally the mobile game is also due in 2020.

SEGA released a new music track from Team Sonic Racing today, from the course “Market Street.” The course, based on the location “Spagonia” from Sonic Unleashed, utilizes a remix of the soundtrack from that game’s daytime action stage, Rooftop Run. The remix is composed by none other than famed Sonic music composer Jun Senoue and the band Hyper Potions, who created the Sonic Mania tracks “Friends” and “Time Trials.” You can check out the music below:

SEGA Japan is moving hard into competitive sports, using its popular puzzle franchise Puyo Puyo as a means to tap into the market. SEGA AGES has already provided us with some fantastic retro Sonic goodness on Nintendo Switch, with the original Mega Drive classic Sonic the Hedgehog available on the eShop. Amazon Italy has recently put up a listing for a Sonic Double Pack for Switch, PS4, and XBO. A Sonic game just isn’t a Sonic game without some kind of elaborate story mode, and it looks like Team Sonic Racing will be no exception. This morning, Sega put out a new video for Team Sonic Racing that highlights the different team gameplay mechanics including skimboost, slingshot, item swapping, Team Ultimate and more. Highlighting the video is gameplay from not only the Planet Wisp stage, but the new ice level first shown at San Diego Comic Con along with some Big the Cat and Amy Rose gameplay.
Team Sonic Racing is available this winter.

Following the worldwide release of Sonic Mania Plus last week, the first data indicates that the Nintendo Switch version accounted for 52% of all sales in the UK last week. The PS4 version accounted for 34% while the Xbox One version made up the remainder.

As announced back at the Sega Fes 2018 event back in April, Sega and the developer M2 will be releasing individual classics on the Nintendo Switch eShop as part of their Sega Ages line. Last year’s explosive release of Sonic Mania wasn’t just about a game that ended up thrilling both new and old blue blur fans. It was also proof that a brand new, ‘classic’ style 2D Sonic title will sell – and sell it most certainly did, cementing itself in the annals of hedgehog history.
