If you’re enjoying the 16-bit remake of Game Gear classic Sonic Triple Trouble, then you’ll be happy to hear that the fan game’s developer, Noah Copeland, has announced that more content is coming soon – alongside a Mac and Android version of the game.
Copeland shared the above image on his social media account, highlighting an upcoming reveal event where details of the content update will be shared. The event will take place on May 26th at 7pm CDT on Copeland’s YouTube channel.
Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit was completed and released to the world in August 2022, and has been a fan favourite ever since launch due to its creative translation of the Game Gear original into Mega Drive/Genesis hardware. We’re super excited to see what kind of content is being planned for this new release, so we’ll make sure to update you as soon as we know what it is!

You might have heard chatter on social media about a fan project that just wrapped up this week, called ‘Sonic Omens’. The final chapters of this impressively ambitious – but highly controversial – fan game was completed and released to the world a few days ago, and the Sonic community has been quick to comment on how developer Ouroboros Studio has made use of the franchise’s accepted canon.

The world of Sonic fan game development never rests. What with annual Hacking Contests, Amateur Game Expos (plus Really Amateur Game Expos), and the odd flash of brilliance catching the Internet’s attention, these games not only help us pass the time between the major official releases from SEGA, some even push the boundaries of the unwritten rulebook of Sonic game design in ways we can only dream of. Sonic Triple Trouble had all the makings of a fantastic 2D Sonic adventure, but—shackled by the 8-bit restrictions of the SEGA Game Gear back in 1994—fell short in a number of ways by no real fault of its own.
Enter Noah Copeland, in collaboration with Overbound Game Studio (the same team of fans responsible for Sonic Time Twisted), who seeks to correct this injustice with a question:
“What if [Sonic Triple Trouble] became a Genesis/Mega Drive game?”

The team behind the ambitious Sonic 2 HD project have revealed a new trailer, sporting two new zones and a demo release.
The fan game, which was revived back in 2014, has seen sporadic updates via the development journal run by the team over the years – but there has been no playable version of the project since the alpha release in 2012.
The new trailer shows off the previously playable Emerald Hill Zone in action once more, alongside new additions Chemical Plant Zone and Hill Top Zone. The trailer ends promising fans a new playable build will be available September 30th for download. You can check it out in action below:

The spring season will likely pass as another dry spell for Sonic fans looking for a new classic gameplay fix, as SEGA delayed Sonic Mania to the summer. To their relief, however, one long-anticipated fan game finally saw a timely launch for Windows earlier today after many years of work and several SAGE demos.
Developed by Overbound, Sonic Time Twisted boasts a number of Genesis-era features and callbacks, including CD-inspired time travel, a dizzying number of Zones to explore, and a variety of old and new elemental shields. The unique Dueling Ages soundtrack has also largely been composed and performed by Hinchy—along with collaborators Andy Tunstall, Joshua “EXshad” Kruszyna, Jogurt, Christopher Wright and Michael Davis—which you can download separately here.
As for the story, the game’s events take place in a separate timeline after Sonic CD and the destruction of the Death Egg, this time leading to the demise of Dr. Robotnik. Metal Sonic aspires to resurrect his fallen master using ancient alien tech, and it is up to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to gather both the Time Stones and Chaos Emeralds to put a stop to the mechanical maniac’s fiendish plot!
Be sure to check out the Overbound Studio website for more information and the actual download for the free fan game. A Mac-supported release for Sonic Time Twisted is also pending.

The Sonic Amateur Games Expo—or SAGE—is finally returning for another round this year, as novice and aspiring developers from all over the web come together and share their efforts with the Sonic community at large. It is at SAGE where people enjoyed a wide variety of fan-made games and ROM hacks, such as Sonic: Before the Sequel, Sonic Time Twisted, and Sonic 2: Dimps Edition, or some intentionally awful and crudely put-together monstrosities at RAGE (Really Amateur Games Expo), which is also hinted to return.
Among this year’s lineup is the open-world 3D fan-game Green Hill Paradise which took the Internet by storm over the past summer, a 2.5D sidescroller with Sonic Incursion, and a Smash Bros. clone with a Sonic Boom coat of paint called Sonic Boom and the Smash Crew. There are too many promising gems to namedrop all at once, but you can check out the SAGE 2016 trailer below to see more fan-games in action!

If you remember a couple of years back, a highly ambitious fan project aiming to re-create the classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with high definition visuals released its first ever alpha to the public. It was certainly stunning – however, issues behind the scenes involving the programming and engine arose shortly thereafter, which sadly brought a swift end to the future of Sonic 2 HD.
However today (and what a day to announce it on), the project was announced to be back on via the Facebook page. A fan came and saved the day, lending his own independently created engine to the game. Even without all its previous team members, Sonic 2 HD is back in production with even a Mac OS version coming at a point. The full post is as follows:
Hello everyone!
The only thing more surprising than seeing an official post from us here is our announcing that S2HD is no longer dead.
You read that correctly: work has once again begun on Sonic 2 HD! That said, we’d like to give you all a brief tie-in for recent events leading to the project’s reboot.
As many of you know, the leading reason behind the project’s cancellation was due to the programming element being removed with no possibility of return in its existing form. As of last year, this changed. Before anyone raises the question, no, the former programmer and the S2HD team members have not had a reunion; instead, a fan of the project independently created and submitted his own engine to Vincent, the project leader, for evaluation. After integrating the art assets from the alpha release and successfully testing it, Vincent began to let the rest of the prior team members know, and we’ve picked up where we left off sans those who are unavailable due to real life obligations. Two other talented programmers have since offered their skills to recreate the game’s physics to match the original, and to port the game to the Mac OS platform (the latter of which is still in the earliest possible stage, and we have no estimate on when it will be playable, so stay tuned!).
In response to some of the questions we have seen, the Alpha Release build is officially discontinued and will not get any form of support as we do not have the source code. The next release will be entirely new programming from the ground up.
We’ll provide more details in how you can help us out in the next few days. It’s good to be back!
From that final note, you can see the team might be reaching out for some help from the community soon. Make sure you keep up to date with their Facebook if you feel you can contribute. I personally wish them all the luck in the world that they’ll succeed – Sonic 2 HD is a huge undertaking but it would be a dream to see it become reality!
Got any fond memories of Sonic 2 you wanna share with us? Be sure to head over to Twitter and get involved in the week long celebration for Sonic’s birthday which we’re collaborating with SEGAbits and Sonic Retro. Use the hashtag #Sonic23on23 to get in on the conversation, and we’ll be looking out for some of the best to re-tweet and favourite!

As most will be aware there has been an X-Treme movement on Christian Senns message board. The former Sonic X-Treme art director (amongst other things) had taken time out of his busy schedule to release information and conceptual art (on the failed project) to the public. Senns release was greeted by a mouth watering fandom, but ultimately the resurrection of X-Treme lie not with Senn, but rather a Frenchman named Dobermann.
Many skilled programmers have attempted to recreate what X-Treme could have been like using 3D visuals, but it was Dobermann (a member on Senns forum) and his decision to develop his game in 2D that has yielded such positive results. Continue reading Sonic X-Treme Remix

Ben Hurst, writer for the Sonic [SatAM] and Sonic Underground television series, is to make an online appearance at the Sonic Amateur Games Expo on July 3rd.
The Sonic Amateur Games Expo is an event you should all have heard of by now. It’s a completely online event that showcases Sonic the Hedgehog fangames. Indeed, the most popular fangames have made their debut at SAGE – or at least got popular that way – including Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Chaos Control. Continue reading SAGE: Ben Hurst Appearance

Yes, SAGE (Sonic Amateur Games Expo) is coming up fast once again, and entries are being accepted by Perfect Chaos Zero until the 24th August!
For those that do not yet know what SAGE is, we can’t really blame you. SAGE is a showcase of everyone’s Fan Games, much like what E3 does for professional video games. It pops up twice a year, and the first opening in 2000/2001 caused a huge reaction within the Online Sonic Community. Thank Blaze Hedgehog for that.
But as time went on, interest for the event waned, as the event slowly became more and more the property of popular site Sonic Fan Games HQ. The last Sonic Amateur Game Expos have been alright, but didn’t really catch mainstream like it used to – only people who visited SFGHQ on a regular basis showed their items. SSMB member, Mad Ad, talked exclusively to Dreadknux about the almost damn-near certainty of a Fighting Fan Game, including members of the SSMB. Dreadknux has given Mad Ad permission to use the SSMB and TSS name in this Fan Game, along with sprites of his character.
The plan for the fighting game is not one large game, it is lots of small instalment-like games, with each instalment being a match. Each game will be small, as it will be part of an ongoing fighting series. There is a league planned using this format style.
The way it is planned to play is very much like a basic form of Smash Bros. Characters will have a limited attack range, but scenery in stages will provide many inventive ideas for other methods of attack. Continue reading SSMB Fighting Game?
