After much speculation about when our favorite blue anthropomorphic speedster would arrive on next gen consoles, the date has finally been revealed by Sega: November 17th, 2006.
Serving as Sega’s own big birthday gift to their own mascot and his fans, Sonic the Hedgehog will serve as not only a homage to Sonic’s early days, but as a reinvention of the series.
Sonic the Hedgehog was first shown in playable form at E3 06. According to Sega, the game has improved much since its E3 demo. We’ll get to see how much improvement has been made when the game is released this November.

The well known and extremely popular british newspaper The Sun, held an exclusive interview with Sonic yesterday. A few interesting tidbits came to light, including Mr hedgehog’s diet and his favourite Sonic game in the series.
Granted, the article in the famous paper doesn’t reveal much. But this is not really a surprise considering Mr Hedgehog in the photo in the article looks considerably bigger than his videogame self. Milk drinking confessions and the potential benefits of drinking the white beverage aside, Sonic admits that he is quite busy with his current games in development, such as Sonic rivals, Sonic the hedgehog and Sonic wild fire.
This article may not be 100% accurate but british Sonic fans familiar with the newspaper should at least be happy that Sonic has got some coverage in a media that is very widely read and therefore, allows Sonic to at least be presented and be even more known amongst those who have not even heard of a Sonic game.

GamesMaster, a gaming magazine, very recently sat down with the new head of Sonic Team, Masahiro Kumono, and together they discussed details concerning the upcoming game “Sonic the Hedgehog,” for the Playstation 3 and X-Box 360. Originally printed in magazine form, the interview will be transcripted here for your reading pleasure.
“GM: What have you been able to do on the next-gen consoles that wasn’t previous in the previous Sonics?
MK: We can’t reveal everything but it’s going to be more story based, more cinematic and much more realistic.
GM: What’s the best looking thing in the new game?
MK: We’ve got detailed lighting and shadows on everything at a level that just wouldn’t have been possible before. Continue reading New Interview with Sonic Team’s Masahiro Kumono

A very nice read in store for you. SEGA have revealed some very interesting bits of information concerning the PSP title, Sonic rivals. They include some concept art, a insight into the storyline of the game and some fascinating looks into the characters that star in this amazing looking game.
First of all, the story that concerns Sonic the hedgehog involves Sonic going on a mission to save his good friends Amy Rose and Miles “Tails” Prower, who by some as of yet unconfirmed mysterious power/character have been turned into cards. The information points to the nefarious Dr Eggman being behind this deed but nothing more has been confirmed. Continue reading SEGA reveal new information about Sonic Rivals

This year is truly a year of celebration for Sonic fans. With Summer of Sonic in full swing, many Sonic fan projects taking off, Sonic the Hedgehog coming to MS and Sony’s next gen consoles this November, and Sonic Rivals marking Sonic’s long awaited debut on PSP, things are looking swell for our little blue dude with a tude.
But apparently, Sega has yet ANOTHER present for the blue dude’s devout fan base: a true tribute to his first appearance, a re-release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the GBA.
The game is a little more then a simple re-release, though. The game comes complete with a full blown spin dash, AND a save function for those who could never get through the whole game before.
The game will be titled “Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis”, in remembrance of Sega’s classic 16 bit console that our spiky blue friend debuted on, and will retail for $19.95. An exact release date has yet to be announced, but we can certainly expect sometime during the holiday season.

While plans for Sonic’s 15th Anniversary all seems to be on the quiet side officially, on the Internet blue blur fans from all over the world are preparing to celebrate in their own special way.
The Sonic Stadium revealed some weeks ago to a surprised public that it will be leading one of the biggest fan collaborations in the history of the community, by launching a mini-site that will feature contributions from as many different Sonic fansites and fan creators as possible. Titled ‘The Summer of Sonic’, it aims to be a neutral ground for all fan creators and webmasters to get equal recognition for their hard work, while simultaneously promoting the exciting June 23rd birthday.
The website, once officially launched, will feature written articles on various aspects of Sonic history, a large gallery for all types of fan creation, a guestbook-style birthday card for visitors to sign, along with competitions for sending in photos and video footage celebrating Sonic’s 15th in unique ways. Congratulations are in order for Sonic Team as the fandom rejoices at the apparent return to form for the 2006 Sonic game aptly named Sonic the Hedgehog (working title). Apparently this is not just a mentality shared by the fans, because the many game journalist that attended the E3 show were more than optimistic for the spiky ones first next generation outing.
The popular game site Gamespot held a vote, called E3 2006 Peoples Choice Winner, whereby its members were able to vote for their favourite game from a wide selection of those showcased during E3. In total 20 games were voted hottest in show, although none were ranked in terms of the number of votes. Sonic made it into the line-up winning the members of Sonic Team a celebratory hamper which they were keen to show off on Sonic Channels staff column and its E3 article. SEGA’s FPS a phantom of it’s former self?
In Japan there have been rumours suggesting that, due impart to an absences from E3, Fifth Phantom Saga (developed by Sonic Team) for the PS3 had been canned. Hot from the E3 show floor, our US correspondent Newton has discovered more about Silver’s role in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog for PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360.
Sonic is constantly referred to as the ‘Iblis Trigger’, and this means that something the blue blur does will bring to life some evil coming (most likely the huge lava-esque demon creature seen in the E3 Trailer). Silver has travelled from the future to the exact point the ‘Iblis Trigger’ occurence is about to take place in order to stop Sonic from making it happen.

Pleasing news for SEGA this morning is that their venture into the mobile phone game sphere has paid off well, with Sonic the Hedgehog spinning his way into the #1 spot on the official Mobile Phone Charts.
ELSPA, the British association founded as a voice for the games industry, holds the latest charts figures in the UK every week, and their official mobile phone chart reveals that Sonic has shoved Tetris into second place, after the block-busting puzzler pipped the hedgehog to the post in February’s tot-up.
Even though Sonic the Hedgehog mobile was only half of the Mega Drive version of Sonic 1, mobile fans seemed to lap it up, obviously experiencing shots of nostalgia when playing the game.
In other chart related news, in an unsurprising twist Sonic Riders is still selling extremely well on the Nintendo Gamecube, maintaining the #1 spot since it was pretty much released. Its success may be pushed aside this week however after sales of the newly released FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 is added up over the last 7 days.

Hurrah I hear you scream, the Sonic X-Treme compendium’s first instalment has been released.
Eversince Chris Senn began spilling the beans on the Sonic X-Treme project on his forums (in mid November) he’s been promising the world in the form of the SXC, and for a while it seemed like that might never have happed. Sonic Channel updates
Sonic Channel has updated in a big way this month. Instead of the usual character related update Sonic Channel has seen a complete overhaul, not longer is the site coded in flash, instead the whole thing is in HTML. This comes as good news to those who have wanted to save artwork and photos from the site, but that’s not all, the layout of the site has been changed too.
The Channel has been crammed with more than you can imagine, one could assume the recent change is in preparation for Sonic’s upcoming 15th anniversary, but either way this is a welcomed surprise. Continue reading Sonic Channel Overhaul

Countdown to Chaos
About 4:15 CEST on the 30th March, the small German gaming site ‘Gamestatin’ lifted the vale on SEGA’s long kept secret: the Sonic Revolution project. Within minutes of the news breaking Gamestatin’s forum became a flurry of activity amongst German SEGA and Sonic fans alike, but ultimately it was not the news itself that would cause the ensuing controversy, but rather what SEGA did next. Earlier this month Sonic News reported that Yuji Naka (often attributed to the creation of the Sonic franchise) was to leave SEGA and form his own development studio. While some of the rumours surrounding Naka’s resignation have been confirmed, he will not however be leaving SEGA to setup his own development studio, instead he plans to persue a career in the catering business. Naka has used his available finances to setup a Japanese Tea House.

Remix Factory, the producers of the E.G.G.M.A.N. and Boss remixes in Shadow the Hedgehog, are to release an exclusive remix of Crush 40’s ‘Open Your Heart’ for Sonic’s 15th Anniversary.
Jun Senoue and LB have been working together for the last month or two on some collaborations, and ‘K-Klub vs Crush 40’ appears to be only one of these projects surfacing. The remix will be promoted during the Summer, as Sonic turns 15.
The decision to use the legendary ‘Open Your Heart’ perhaps has more to do with the fact that this track is the defining theme of not only Sonic Adventure, but the turning point in Sonic the Hedgehog and a firm announcement of the blue blur’s console return in 1999. If anything, it has become part of the soundtrack to a generation of Sonic fans, old and new. Continue reading Remix of ‘Open Your Heart’ Imminent

There was a time when our blue buddy was content to wear cheap red knockoffs, but that all changed with ‘Sonic Adventure 2’ when he developed a lust for ‘Soap Scorchers’, and then in ‘Sonic Riders’ when he wore grungy skater boots. So what now, well lately it seems Sonic gets a ‘Rush’ from wearing Converse All Stars. Get it?

The UK based supermarket chain ‘Tesco’ is currently running a large promotion that it calls ‘Price Blitz’.
The promotion aims to bring a wide range of audio visual entertainment to the consumer at budget prices. On offer are: CD’s, DVD’s, PC software and Videogames, each category is then grouped into a different price range. Understandably the quality and production number of these items will affect their price.
Worthy of note (and the whole purpose of this report) are the Sonic items included in the offer. If you’ve been deterred from buying Sonic’s PC outings or DVD instalments of Sonic Underground, because of the price, then worry no more. Infact the items on offer were already part of value a range, so you can be sure the cost has been slashed severely. Continue reading Tesco ‘Price Blitz’ Cuts Cost on Sonic Software

It’s amazing, and yet at the same time hardly surprising, but of all the Japanese animation studios out there SEGA landed ‘Production IG’ to work upon its anime intro for ‘Sonic Riders’.
This revelation came about when Sonic Channel staff member Moro (although there maybe a translation error in the name) revealed a piece of the Sonic Riders conceptual art on the Channels staff column. It would appear the art represents a part of the intros storyboard; although Moro is unclear on the matter, often deviating in content to Japans current weather conditions. However one thing is certain, the art bears Production IG’s official logo. Continue reading Production IG’s Sonic Riders concept art

It’s been a long few months since we’ve heard from SEGA on Sonic 2006, but Gamepro magazine bombarded Sonic Team Japan for some more info, and that’s what they got.
From the article, we are introduced to a few new facts. We knew Sonic 2006’s worlds would be of full detail, but the Blue Hedgehog also boasts a hefty load of detail. He now contains a total of around 1 million polygons, a “sky rocket”- as Gamepro so nicely put it- to his previous model, which only had around 1,500 polygons. This means Sonic will be holding a huge amount of detail. Continue reading GamePro Gets an Exclusive Look at Sonic Next-Gen!

Rumour has it that a Sonic game is in development for Nintendo’s next-gen console: the ‘Revolution’.
The large videogaming site ‘IGN’ recently revealed that ‘Sources’ close to SEGA had confirmed that SEGA are indeed creating a new Sonic game for the unusual little console.
SEGA have given no confirmation that such a game exists, but reports place Yuji Naka as director on the project; if this is the case then Yuji is certainly stretching himself thin, what with the development of ‘Fifth Phantom Saga’ and the next-gen Sonic title for PS3 and XBOX360.
