Sonic 2 World Record Attempt At Golden Joystick Awards

Emeraldhill

Gamer James Richards will be attempting to break the current world record for fastest completion of Sonic The Hedgehog 2’s first stage Emerald Hill Zone on three formats, Wii Virtual Console version, Xbox 360’s Xbox Live Arcade version and the SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection version on PS3.

The event is being held by Lucozade to promote their new energy drink shot Lucozade Alert Plus. This new drink is proven to boost mental performance, focus, reactions and alertness all of which are a fitting suit for Sonic’s character.

Can James do it? Well he already holds the Guinness World Record for his blistering speed run of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 which stands at 49 minutes and 17 seconds so he’s very capable.

Editor’s Note: The current Guinness World Record for the fastest time through Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 was achieved at the Summer of Sonic convention in 2008. The world record holder is Louis Tsiattalou with a time of 0:20.

UPDATE: GAME & Gamestation Reveal M&S Pre-order Gifts

UPDATE 2: My copies of both versions have arrived from HMV via Royal Mail with 2 of the t-shirts and both are size Small. Reports have come in of people getting otehr sizes delivered. It seems HMV are just sending out random sizes. Awful way of doing things but even if you dont get your size they still make good collectors items.

UPDATE: TSS has learnt that HMV accept orders outside of the UK and ship via air mail so if you live overseas and fancy HMV’s exclusive t-shirt then get your pre-orders in. Remember though, Wii’s are region locked so PAL copies won’t work on U.S. consoles. The DS is region-free though.

Sonic Adventure DX To Be Ported/Remade?

Sonic Adventure DX PAL GC

According to a recent ratings entry at the Australian classifications board the OFLC it looks like we could be getting a new port/remake of the Sonic Adventure Gamecube/PC port Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut. All we know right now is this new entry was rated on the 18th August 2009 as ‘G General’ and will be multi-platform.

The original port basically added some glossy changes to character models, a mission mode and all 12 Sonic Game Gear games. There’s no limit to what a new version on current consoles could add to the game if Sonic Team really worked at it.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for any future info/media on this, so stay tuned.

Sonic Watch At Weston Super Mare

So I’ve just returned from my 5 day holiday with my wife at Weston Super Mare which was awesome by the way but before returning to the news hunting I thought you guys our devoted readers might be interested in a few Sonic findings we came across.

Dales mobile pics 063

First we have your bog standard game shop use of him in their banner together with Mario on the other side which I kinda cut out of the pic(no offence Mario fans). The store was pretty cool, plenty of DVD’s, games and music. Like an indepent HMV except these guys are cool enough to sell cool stuff in their cabinets and even loose Game Boy, DS and PSP games.

Dales mobile pics 050
Dales mobile pics 067

Second we have a ride I have dubbed ‘Sonic Chaos 2: The Revenge’ since the ride is called ‘Chaos’, Sonic is pictured on it and the ride looks like something Eggman could come up with to terrorise all those screaming people I often heard riding it.

Dales mobile pics 068

Last we have an awesome Sonic spray paint job me, the wife and the always awesome Flyboy Fox who we met up with there there on Thursday found while trekking through the town. I almost didn’t see it as it’s been painted on the bottom corner of one of those big green/black electricity boxes. The artist ‘enza’ must be an hardcore fan to use Sonic’s movie artwork all but having him hold a spray paint can instead of the normal peace symbol.

Weston Super Mare, we salute your Sonic love.

New M&S at the Olympic Winter Games screenshots

MASATOWG_Wii_05-08-09

SEGA have released some new screenshots for both Wii and DS versions of upcoming title Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In the screenshots we can see new HUD bits in both versions and some on-screen Wii Remote instructions displaying how the motion controls will work in the Wii version. Graphics are looking to be some of the best we’ve seen on the Wii.

In other sightings, Nintendo fans will be happy to learn that the course seen in the above screenshot is revealed in one screenshot to be none other than Mario Circuit from the famous Mario Kart series as has been speculated since the course was first revealed.

MASATOWG_DS_05-08-09

The new images of the DS version showcases more of its events too like the bobsleigh, skiing and snowboarding. It looks like the bobsleigh will control with the D-pad and buttons if the on screen controls in a screenshot of Metal Sonic and DK getting their bobsleigh started is anything to go by. New HUD displays reveal a gauge will play a part in the bobsleigh event too.

Snowboarding has also gained a gauge and items to attack your opponents with much like in the Dream Race event in the first DS game. Also like the first DS game SEGA aren’t holding back in the graphics department as they again look to be pushing the DS to its limits to make another beautiful looking game.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will be released for Wii & DS October 16th in the UK and October 13th in the U.S. Check out more info and media at the Official Site.

Sonic Helps Celebrate Pink Panthers 45th Anniversary

Sonic & Pink Pather

On 15th July Sonic the Hedgehog got together with The Pink Panther to help celebrate his 45th Birthday, Sonic also received some Birthday wishes for his Japanese 18th Birthday that was coming up the 18th July. The pair of abnormally coloured animals look to be working the stage well together, with no reports of Sonic giving The Pink Panther any attitude or The Pink Panther playing any tricks on Sonic we can assume all was well at the event.

Pink Panther cafe

The Pink Panther even got a nice cafe set up with a lovely selection of food except he didn’t accomodate for Sonic as there doesn’t seem to be any chilli dogs on the menu, for shame.

Here’s to many more years for both of these colourful characters!

The costume has the light orangey colour we saw from Sonic 2006’s Super Sonic, the spikes curving up, the red eyes and the more serious mouth so they’ve done their research. eBay Watch: 1997 Talking Sonic Plush Loves His SEGA

Talking Sonic Plush 1997

By 1997, young Sonic fans had gotten to hear Sonic speak in Sonic CD and on several cartoon shows. So imagine their delight when a talking Sonic the Hedgehog plush was released! Sonic talking in your home, right in front of you! Would have been exciting to hear Sonic say a cool phrase to you huh? So, squeeze his belly and what does he say?

“SEGA!” Oh Sonic, you silly guy. Let’s squeeze again.
“SEGA!” Ok… let’s try again.
“SEGA!”
*10 times later* “SEGA!”

Don’t get me wrong, I love SEGA. And advertising does bring more money, certainly. But surely a talking Sonic plush should say something a bit cooler and with attitude like his various lines from the TV shows? If the word ‘SEGA’ had to be there then OK, but the creators could have put a few more words/lines in there. That’s my rant over, what do you guys in the Sonic community think? Is this what the 1997 Sonic crowd wanted in their talking Sonic plush toys? Let us know in the comments.

If you guys are interested in this plush you can now get one on eBay. There is currently a boxed one on eBay.com and a loose one on eBay.co.uk. You guys in the U.S. have just over 2 days to bid and at the moment there are no bids and you guys in the UK had better be quick as the item is a Buy It Now listing for £19.99 or you can pitch an offer to the seller.

SEGA of America must be feeling generous as the new Adventure Pack released on Xbox Live today has hit the U.S. Playstation Store today too aswell as the Japanese Playstation Store. SEGA have revealed in the packs description on Xbox Live at least(don’t know if its the same on the Playstation Store description) that this will be the last piece of downloadable content –

That’s Xbox Live, U.S. and Japan PSN wrapped up but we’ll keep you posted on if and when the European Playstation Store get’s its two missing Adventure Packs.

More New M&SATOWG Screens, Silver Confirmed

Some more new screenshots of both the Wii and DS versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games have appeared from E3 on Sonic fansite Planete Sonic. The most interesting of the screens is the above screenshot(click to go large) of Tails skiing in what looks like one of the Dream Events but what is so interesting you ask? Eagle eyed SSMB Member speedfreak has pointed out a Silver The Hedgehog icon flag among the other character icon flags in the background confirming him to be a playable character in this game.

Silver was discovered to be a playable character in the Wii version of the last game at one point in development when leftover data was discovered in the final game so it’s no surprise they would add him in to this title. We’ll keep an eye open for any further media/info on this game as it happens.

Sonic & Knuckles will be released later this month and will incorporate the lock-on feature with Sonic 2 and 3 but will it lock-on with Sonic 1 for the Blue Sphere game? We’ll have to find out.

Included are some skiing and hockey screens for Wii, some bobsledding, skiing and snowboarding screens for DS together with a couple of screens of the DS’s exclusive Adventure Mode. SEGA Updates SSASR Formats…Again

ssaslogo
You may have seen our article we published last Sunday regarding SEGA changing the formats list on their sites for upcoming game Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. On Thursday 28th May SEGA announced the game to be coming to Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, DS and PC but a few days later SEGA edited the PS3 version on their sites from PLAYSTATION®3 to Playstation® Network indicating the game was going to be download only on that format which made some PS3 owners a bit annoyed.

SEGA also added the PC version to its U.S. site as PC Download indicating a download only version on that format too despite the PC DVD logo in the trailer. No PC version listing was anywhere to be found on the European site.

Now SEGA have updated the formats list again on both the U.S. and European sites. On both the U.S. and European sites the PS3 version has been changed from Playstation® Network to PLAYSTATION®3, the European site has now finally added the PC version as simply PC but the U.S. site still lists it as PC Download.

So, PS3 version now on Blu-Ray, Europe PC version on disc and U.S. PC version download only. What do you guys think of these confusing developments? Let us know in the comments.
