ASRT DLC: Simon From Yogscast Joins the Roster & Humble Bundle Detailed.

ASRTcharity

A few days ago, Sumo Digitals Steve Lycett hinted that the next piece of ASRT DLC would be controversial, PC exclusive and ‘a popcorn moment.’ Many have since speculated what this might mean, theories have ranged from ASRT being Free To Play, to certain very popular characters being included in the game (excluding the console versions) and even 1970’s Trousers Mode… what it could happen.

Well… we might have found the answer.

During the livestream of the very popular PC gaming channel “Yogscast,”Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed will be included in a new Humble Bundle for charity. However the reveal didn’t end there. Simon from the Yogscast then went on to state that he himself would become a racer in ASRT and be part of a piee of charity DLC that would all go live on December 6th.

They didn’t reveal much, only that both the bundle and the DLC would be up on December 6th 2013, and that Simon would be a piece of ‘Charity DLC.’ We’re not sure at this time if Simon is the only playable character being added or if there will be others.

Now before people ‘react’ just keep in mind that this is blatently a charity thing so nobody has had a spot taken away. Furthermore, S0L has hinted additional content is on the way and that this is likely the first of a few pieces of additional content for ASRT.

Also think about it. ASRT on the PC, pay what you want? This is a heck of a deal!

Friday Five: Best Sonic Games of the Past Generation

sonic_generations_cityescape2

While we’ve had the Wii U for a full year now, the PS4 and X-Box One have made their debut. Since Sonic Lost World is part of the new generation of systems, I thought it would be a good time to reflect back on the best Sonic games of this past Generation. It was a hard list to make, not because there was a ton of great Sonic games to choose from but because there were so few to be brutally honest. Also, I have one rule to this list, no spinoffs. This means no Mario and Sonic or All-Stars Racing. (I should have been stricter with the staff pics and added no remakes or fan games but too little too late.) I wanted this to focus solely on Sonic. This means there’s a game in here that wouldn’t normally make any top five list. So prepare for the good, the great and the…..meh.

NOTE: This is an opinionated article and everyone’s gonna have their favorites, so if your list is different from mine that’s fine but let’s make a huge fuss over it okay?

Sonic Dashes Onto Android Phones At Last

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tXXBYGvvlw

Negative Nancies and Debbie Downers need not speak ill of the lack of Sonic Dash on Android devices as of today, for SEGA and Hardlight Studios have finally released the endless runner onto the Google Play store for free!

The app’s surprise release follows the tease SEGA had spread from its social media networks just yesterday, and players will be pleased to know that they won’t be missing out on certain events that went down on the iOS version of the game any longer, such as the ongoing Zazz boss battle event tying in with the recent Wii U/3DS release of Sonic Lost World.

If you are reading this from your Android phone, I think you know what you have to do!

Sonic CD: Temporal Duality Now Available

temporal_duality_coverAfter much anticipation, OverClocked Remix has released their latest collaborative work in the form of their 45th album, if only in hopes of finally putting the argument over “which soundtrack is the better one” to rest. And how did they plan on doing that?

By going all out and paying tribute to both American and Japanese scores of Sonic CD in the only way they know how.

Lo and behold, Temporal Duality: A Sonic CD ReMix Album is at long last available for public downloading! The three disc album covers the hedgehog’s epic journey across the time crossed zones of the Little Planet in both musical flavours, so whether you’re a fan of the Ogata/Hataya flare or in the mood for some Nilsen, Young, and Sterling, there is a little something for everybody in this fully rearranged soundtrack.

You can nab the album yourself via the Temporal Duality webpage! Check out the history behind the project, read up on each artist’s thoughts behind their own track, and while you’re at it, nab the entirety of OCRemix’s Sonic themed albums (available on the site)!

That being said, this release kind of puts me in the mood for a music marathon of sorts. With Sound of Speed – Sonic the Hedgehog, Hedgehog Heaven – Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Project Chaos – Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, and now Temporal Duality – Sonic CD, OverClocked Remix has just about chronicled the complete 16bit saga of the Sonic the Hedgehog series… I can’t help but wonder what entry they will cover next in down the line.

On the side, I would also recommend nabbing tunes from the OCR forum’s Blue Bomber Blue Blur Collision Competition, if you’re in the mood for some Sonic and Mega Man music crossover goodness!

If you have already download Temporal Duality, share your thoughts on the album in the comments! Favourite songs? Favourite artist? Good points? Bad points? Sound off down below!

TSS Review: Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (Wii U)

The Mario & Sonic series is one that I personally have a lot of history with. I remember almost exploding with excitement when the first title was announced – my two favourite videogame characters, together at last! Sure, it wasn’t the ideal crossover scenario everyone wanted and the game itself wasn’t anything that special, but I lapped it up for sheer novelty value alone, alternating between the Team Mario and Team Sonic t-shirts that came as pre-order bonuses while I shook my Wii Remote around in glee. Pre-Order Now: First 4 Figures Sonic Generations “City Escape” Diorama

f4fgenerationsstatue1

Chances are if you wanted one of these you’ve already pre-ordered by now, but here you go anyway. First 4 Figures have opened pre-orders for their Sonic statue, however unlike previous editions, this is part of their new ‘diorama’ range.

The scene depicts modern and classic Sonic skateboarding through the iconic City Escape stage as depicted in Sonic Generations. Whilst the statue may get a lot of you excited, some may end up being priced out of these as they’re VERY expensive!

The standard edition is limited to 1000 units and costs $299.99 (£185)

The ‘exclusive’ edition is limited to 450 units and costs $329.99 (£204)

However, don’t forget those prices do not include shipping, for people living in the UK you’re looking at an extra $30 on top of that.

Now for a limited time F4F have issued discount codes for each statue which takes $25 off the regular and $30 off the exclusive.

Also if you are interested in pre-ordering, please be aware of what the statue will actually look like when you get it, the image at the top is very eye catching but it also has a lot of photoshopped effects that will not be on the final statue, this is a more true to life image of what it will look like.

So, anyone here got a pre-order down?

OCRemix Reveals Sonic CD: TEMPORAL DUALITY Trailer, Release Incoming

20 years ago today, Sonic CD hit the shelves of North America, following its Japanese release two months prior. The hit title that premiered recurring rival and robotic doppelganger Metal Sonic, alongside hammer-wielding valkyrie and blue believer Princess Sally Amy Rose, has been celebrated all around the community this year, predominantly through the Metal Sonic-themed Summer of Sonic convention featuring character designer Kazuyuki Hoshino. However, another Sonic CD tribute was in the works by way of the musical community at OverClocked Remix.

Seven months ago, the folks at OCRemix formally unveiled their 45th tribute album project, following the likes of Hedgehog Heaven, Project Chaos, and Sound of Speed, penned under the name TEMPORAL DUALITY: A Sonic CD ReMix Album.

Founded by Rexy and led by SuperiorX, the album pays tribute to both American and Japanese soundtracks of the game, with the talented team behind the album rearranging the works of Naofumi Hataya, Masafumi Ogata, David J. Young, Mark “Sterling” Crew, and Spencer Nilsen!

Now with the album’s official trailer out, it’s only a matter of time before its release hits! Stay tuned!

If you’re interested in other OCRemix projects, the community recently released the Capcom-supported For Everlasting Peace: 25 Years of Mega Man, which you can purchase on iTunes and Amazon, as well as pre-order a physical copy. Highly recommended if you’re a fan of the other little boy blue!

Sonic Lost World demos in Europe this Thursday

Sonic Lost World July screenshots 6Better late than never! In one of the most topsy-turvy release schedules ever, demos for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of Sonic Lost World will be arriving in Europe when the eShop updates this week, on Thursday at around 2 or 3pm British time. This follows the demos hitting the US last week and Japan last month – which, when you consider that Europe got the full game before either of those regions, is a rather baffling series of events.

As with the other demos, the EU Sonic Lost World demos will likely contain Windy Hill Zone 1 on Wii U, in addition to Windy Hill Tutorial and Windy Hill Zone 1 on 3DS. If you’ve not played either of the versions yet and want to try them out before you buy – especially with Christmas on the horizon! – now’s finally the chance to do so.

Will you be downloading the demos when they arrive in Europe later this week? Let us know in the comments!

Kickstarter for Megadrive / Genesis Retrospective Art Book Launches

mdbook

The popularity of crowdsourcing to fund projects has gained much momentum recently, and only a few months ago, we featured a news article for the Not Enough Rings parody comic book, which was successfully funded.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the release of the SEGA Mega Drive (or Genesis, depending on where you live), a new kickstarter project has been launched by Read-Only Memory (creators of the Sensible Software book) which will be of interest to many of you: SEGA Megadrive / Genesis: Collected Works. This project looks to be nothing short of amazing, describing itself as a compendium of production artwork, interviews and development sketches.

The book will of course showcase a host of Sonic the Hedgehog material, but will also contain much from other loved franchises such as Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star and Golden Axe to name a few; it also aims to feature images and illustrations that have seldom been seen by the public across its 300 pages.

In addition to this, the creators of the book have already secured interviews with an incredibly impressive line-up of SEGA staff, past and present, including Naoto Oshima, Kazuyuki Hoshino, Yuji Naka, Yuzo Koshiro and Yu Suzuki.

For a pledge of £30 (about $45), you can secure yourself a copy of what is set to be the ultimate coffee table history book. If you’ve got the cash to splash, £250 will not only get you a copy of the book, but an exclusive limited edition print (1 of 100), created by Naoto Oshima, especially for the campaign.

At time of writing, the campaign has already doubled its initial funding goal, so you can pledge in confidence. This is surely one book you don’t want to miss out on!

[P.S. If you love your kick-starters, you might want to check out Far From Faith, a comic set to be animated by the very talented Lynne Triplet, known to many of you at TRiPPY of NiGHTS fame!]

Sonic Lost World demos finally arrive in the US

28020SONIC_LOST_WORLD_Wii_U_Screenshots_720p_1280x720_v1_4Sonic Lost World arrived on Nintendo systems in the US a couple of weeks ago but if you haven’t gotten around to picking it up yet and want to give it a try, then rejoice – you can finally go hands on with demos for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions! (only a month after Japan, but let’s not be bitter…)

Both demos can now be downloaded from their respective eShop service and can be played a maximum of 10 times – more limited than a typical Nintendo demo, but considering the game is already out waiting for you to buy it, it should be enough to help make your mind up one way or the other.  The Wii U demo contains Windy Hill Zone 1 while the 3DS demo contains the Windy Hill Tutorial as well as Windy Hill Zone 1.

There’s no word on the demos appearing on the European eShop services at the time of writing.

Don’t forget you can also read our reviews of the Wii U version and 3DS version to help you decide if the game is for you.

Will you be downloading either of the demos for Sonic Lost World? Let us know in the comments!

TSS Review: Sonic Lost World (3DS)

From the moment of its official unveiling, Sonic Lost World was poised to drift away from certain standards of games past, making this new title one of the most anticipated games of the year. Gone was the Boost, making way for a fusion of Genesis-era gameplay and parkour-inspired controls! Although, while eyes were certainly glued to any and all information of the Wii U release, many questions arose concerning the Nintendo 3DS version that would surely follow, especially with it being the first ever 3D handheld Sonic game. With Dimps once again behind the wheel, has the Osaka-based developer crafted a solid Sonic handheld experience with its first venture into 3D territory, or has this game only met with 3 dimpmensions of sorry expectations? Does Sonic Lost World 3DS stand on its own apart from Sonic Lost World Wii U, or does it fall short of grabbing that ledge and fall straight down? Let’s dive right into the mellow and find out!

Steam Listing Reveals New DLC for Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed!

When you think about it Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed has been out for well over a year… yet it still continues to get support and this includes free additional characters… Thats awesome! Hey videogame industry, this is how you get people to buy your future games!

Anyway…

asrtdlc

It looks like more DLC is on the way if this steam listing appears to be correct. It would appear that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is to get some new DLC, but whats interesting is that previous character updates have been included in patches and updates, this is the first time that a DLC listing has been made seperately for the title.

Could this be the long rumored petition characters? And will they come to consoles? Erm… I don’t know, I’m not in charge of that stuff.

Stay tuned to TSS for more information as we get it.

For starters, the official Mario & Sonic website has updated with full details on all of the game’s modes, including the Olympic Events and Dream Events, as well as showcasing some brand new character artwork for Teams Mario and Sonic.
