Team Sonic Racing Impressions: Jason’s Take

If there’s one thing Sumo Digital is best at more than anything, it’s making a solid racing game. From Outrun 2 to Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, the development team has proven that they are the best at what they do. The only thing that could possibly hold them back is a good concept with a fatal flaw. And this is where Team Sonic Racing comes in. Continue reading Team Sonic Racing Impressions: Jason’s Take

SEGA Wants to sell you a Sonic branded toaster, but needs you to fund it by July 12

Editor’s Note: The original version of this article stated the funding deadline had already passed on June 12. The actual deadline is July 12, at 12:59 AM PST

Have you ever made a grilled cheese sandwich and thought “this would be even better with Sonic’s face on it!”? Well, Sega may just have the product for you!

On shop.sega.com, you can purchase a Sonic toaster for only $34.99! There’s a bit of a catch though. It needs 1,000 orders in order for the toaster to become an actual product and get produced. At the moment, it’s only sold 376, so it’ll need to sell over 600 more to get made.

SEGA has 29 more days to reach that goal, so hopefully we will all be eating Sonic branded toast soon! The toaster has until the end of July 12 to reach its funding goal.

Crush 40 and Belly Headline Sega and Puma’s Launch Party

On Wednesday June 13, get ready to party with Belly and Crush 40 as Sega teams up with Puma to give you a rockin’ launch party for their new Sonic-themed shoes at Nice Kicks in L.A. This includes a meet and greet with Sonic Team’s own Takashi Iizuka. While the shoes go on sale on the 12th, the party is on the 13th. While no ticket info is given, it appears to be a party open to the public, so you may want to come in early before it gets too crowded.

Alex and I are bound to be there, so expect coverage right here at the Sonic Stadium. In the meantime, go to the offical launch announcement page for more information.

Team Sonic Racing: “Who Are You Mysterious Man Who Floats On High…”

…And launches a thousand YouTube speculation videos and Sonic fansite articles!?”

Ever since the boxart leaked of TSR, fans have been pointing to a mysterious flying figure within the image.

Some say, he’s Big the Cat in disguise, whilst others claim he’s Paul Rudd infiltrating the game, for others he’s the announcer from the original ASR finally making his debut!

Well, we don’t know who he is yet, but we do now have a much clearer look at him. Steam launched a TSR page for the game along with a higher resolution image of the boxart, so lets take a closer look.

It’s…! A mysterious flying guy! He’s in a car and he has a hat! He can grow a great big fluffy moustache! He wears a robe, like a king, or emperor!

Who is he? We’ll let you know the moment we find out!

“Team Sonic Racing” Cover Image Leaked

UPDATED WITH HIGHER QUALITY IMAGES. The full title of the mystery Sonic game along with what’s likely the official cover has finally been revealed thanks to a leaked image on Wal-Mart’s app. Team Sonic Racing (Super Sonic Racing would have been so much better IMO) is the third in the Sonic racing series in the past ten years, only this time there doesn’t appear to be a regular Sega character in sight. The cover is from the Nintendo Switch version, but it should arrive on PS4 and XB1 as well.

Just two days ago, Sega teased the game from it’s official Twitter account. This leads me to believe we should be getting a full announcement later today if not Thursday. Team Sonic Racing is likely due this fall or holiday season. We’ll be giving you more and more coverage of this game is we get closer to E3.

Credit goes to Sonic Revolution’s own Lidice “Angelidia” Mendoza for discovering the leak.

Sega: Huge Announcement Tomorrow

Sega’s Japanese fan event Sega Fes is set to begin this weekend and out of nowhere the US and EU Sega twitter accounts just tweeted the following.

https://twitter.com/SEGA_Europe/status/984793771870126081

Whilst this could be anything Sega related, we here at TSS have noticed a number of Japanese Social Media accounts have also been tweeting hints at Sonic themed announcements for various consumer goods all day.

This does not outright confirm that the announcement is specifically for a Sonic related item, but it does certainly suggest it might be or that Sega Fes will have a number of Sonic related announcements at the event. Furthermore, for both Sega of America and Sega Europe to tweet about this, it would have to be something major that affects the global Sega Brand. Which would suggest it’s either Sonic or Yakuza.

We’ll update this with details of said announcement and live-stream links as we get them.

Sonic Generations Finally Hits Xbox One Backward Compatibility

About friggin’ time!

Microsoft held their second episode of Inside Xbox yesterday, in which they share a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s inner workings, and today’s livestream held a special announcement regarding backward compatibility on Xbox One.

The gaming giant revealed that a handful of backward compatible Xbox 360 games will become Xbox One X-enhanced, a beefy update through which last-gen titles receive a substantial performance boost on the most powerful home console on the market, after the presentation. Among them is none other than Sonic Generations, which also means that the 20th anniversary title celebrating Sonic’s history has also been finally retrofitted for the Xbox One family of systems as of today!

Episode 2 of Inside Xbox also revealed a ton of new original Xbox games being added to the backward compatible library, including SEGA’s own Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Now that leaves only Sonic Unleashed and Sonic ’06 as the remaining mainline Sonic games to become Xbox One backward compatible… I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

The Spin: How SEGA is Ignoring the Middle Children of Sonic’s Legacy

2010 was the year Sonic the Hedgehog came back. Yes, we all heard the stories about how the franchise had declined not long after the jump to 3D, how gaming news outlets and critics even now would begin their pieces with some variation of “Sonic has had a rocky history,” and how every new Sonic game released around the “dark ages” period couldn’t shake off the dreaded “Sonic Cycle.” Continue reading The Spin: How SEGA is Ignoring the Middle Children of Sonic’s Legacy

It includes mini games as well as the regular slot machine games.

Super Sonic DLC Crashlands into Sonic Forces, Free for a Limited Time

A series staple since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 over twenty-five years ago right up to the recent Sonic Mania, either earning the seven Chaos Emeralds or clearing the game’s story often yielded the highly coveted reward of Super transformation. From there, simply collect fifty rings mid-stage, transform, and blast off with ring-fueled invincibility and faster speeds.

While oddly absent from the game’s initial release over a month ago, Sonic Forces is finally bringing in this long loved franchise staple at long last as free downloadable content… unfortunately, with a catch that is already drawing community backlash.

SEGA To Open Official Online Store

SEGA are setting up shop online with a new official store. As announced in the latest official Sonic stream, this store is set to open as soon as next Tuesday.

The range that’s planned covers quite a large amount of franchises and products. While Sonic has the most prominence, the store will also start out with the SEGA Mega Drive, Golden Axe and Revenge of Shinobi, and there’s more on the way. Items range from plush toys and mugs to clothing, enamel pins and more. There’s even set to be some items exclusive to the store, and as soon as it launches you will be able to get the T-Shirt that was previously seen at TGS.

Currently, the store will be available to those in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America. They are looking into plans to expanding its range in the future.

The latest issue of Licensing Today Worldwide makes mention of an online store opening as well, this one dedicated to personalised and customisable merchandise. It mentions the range starting with gifts, technology accessories and homeware, with a projected opening timeframe of this winter. It’s currently unknown if this is related to the SEGA Shop.

If you want something to purchase for a Sonic or SEGA-loving friend in time for Christmas, this might be the right place to look!
